Any idea what a 1959 LP is worth and how rare a good one is? Slash just wanted a little more time with his most beloved guitar, nothing more. It's practically like giving your child away.

Brett Townsend no its not. He has said many times Aerosmith were his fav band and reason he plays guitar. He has said loads the stones are greatest rock n roll band but when he was younger Aerosmith is his fav. When velvet revolver was asked by classic rock magazine to do an article on their fav artists slash picked Aerosmith. He isnt a fan of late 80s forward Aerosmith though.

In 1988 I saw that guitar for sale at Dixie Guitars in Atlanta. The price was $10,000.00 and it was on hold. I asked Tut Campbell who was buying it and he said "the guitar from that new band Guns And Roses". I saw them (GNR) about a month later on the American Music Awards and Slash was playing that guitar.

When GNR was new on the scene I liked their music but didn't like their image especially Slash. I remember a few pictures of Slash holding Jack Daniels bottles like he's drinking shots right out of the bottle. I said to myself what a waste, some long hair trying to look bad with a bottle. Then I heard him in a radio interview many years later and he came across as a genuine and well spoken person. It continues today. Of course I don't know him personally but he seems to be a good guy. Just goes to show you that you can't always judge a person by just looking at a few pictures of their show business image.

    • @aussierule
      @aussierule 8 років тому +10

You shouldn't judge people on drug usage or alcohol drinking anyway. Chances are they're a better person than you. In fact Stevie Ray Vaughan was on many substances before he got clean and he was still the same genuine respectful Texan with or without drugs. One of the nicest people to have ever walked this planet. It's not "you can't always judge a person" it should be "you should never judge a person". Just think about it, do some self reflection and stop judging people because their lifestyle isn't exactly the same as yours.

It is worth what a collector will pay. It isn't worth a million as an instrument. If you want one , and they are great,
you dint have to have one owned by a famous person. There is a very good possibility you can find one that sounds / plays better not owned by a celebrity and pay far less than a million .
I held the Peter Green/ Gary Moore burst in my hands and a friend played it for a few songs.
The reports I got back by a few that played it were not so good. And these were people that have played more bursts than most people.

I held it but did not play it. My friend did. He was unpressed with its sound and playability. I own one and have been told many times by good players that have played many people. They tell me mine is on of the best. So you want a good one or a famous one. Here is mine being played by J D Simo.

Around 1985 give or take a year or two, that guitar was for sale for around $12k at Vintage Guitars in Smyrna GA, around the price of a inexpensive new car back then. They had sent word to Joe that they had it, but apparently he wasn't interested, he was probably too broke to buy it back. I don't know who they sold it to, but obviously it found it's way into Slash's collection. I wanted to just touch it, but they had it locked under glass to keep idiots like me from touching it. Like an old stray dog, it's nice to hear it finally made its way back home. :)

Wow. Very cool. I had always wished that the Montrose / Moore scenario would of went down that way.
Reconcilation before death end is important. Whilst no guitar was in the picture of a dear friend and I when we had a big time falling out
over the course of a year and a half, we have recently made amends. What a great relief to know that I can call him up and talk until wee hours and I can be there for him. Now if only he gave me a 1959 Les Paul.
About 25 years ago I had a student and dear friend walk into my lesson room, where I was teaching a student, and give me an old Les Paul. He just smiled and said to make sure I played it. Well I do to this day and in fact have had to upgrade some parts last year in order to get it just right again due to playing it!

The irony of Joe's statement about Slash's heart is that he had developed cardiomyopathy, a heart disease of enlargement of the heart, from years of heavy drinking/smoking/drugs, and was given between 6 days and six weeks to live. This was after he left Guns and was on the road with Snakepit. Miraculously, his heart healed after he left the hospital and changed his way of living (for a time). He still, as I understand it, has the built-in defibrillator in his chest.

Not likely, man. 1959 Les Pauls are rare, to the point that they are nicknamed "The Holy Grail of Guitars." There's not many around and even one that's not in the best shape will cost around 100K. Sure, there's a lot of musicians who have the money to own several, but the thing is that people who own these, like Slash in Joe Perry's story, usually don't want to sell them.

Basically, people enjoy different things and as you could see, a lot don't enjoy what was in this interview, sadly.

I think Slash bided his time to give the guitar back to Joe for his 50th birthday as Aerosmith & Joe Perry were a massive influence on him. Slash used that guitar in the November Rain video & despite Slashs' years of excess of which he kicked to the kerb, he is one of the nicest, coolest & kindest rock stars out there. Don't know if Slash has a 1959 Les Paul but I did watch an interview with him in which he said anytime he saw anyone with one is instantly cool. Long live Slash & Joe Perry & Les Paul guitars
