The beginning background singing was done by young choirboys. Everyone at first thinks it’s Floor but it’s not. This is a masterpiece and understanding the backstory helps appreciate the composition. Thomas is a brilliant composer.

Actually sometimes grittier, rock sounding Marco has a really beautiful voice. Try 'The Islander' live from Tampere 2015. Actually more of a folk number and different than what you've heard from nightwish. Also from same concert, very lilting ballad featuring Floor on 'Sleeping Sun"
Floor Jansen is one of the greatest female vocalist, not only because she has an incredible and versitile voice that everyone loved to listen to but the way she perform to interpret the song by giving her soul and emotion into it is always amaze me.

Pip is Course Leader and Lecturer in Music Technology The University of West London since Aug 2004..... Marko Hietala is the bass player and male vocalist in Nightwish.
While this isn't a voice comment, I'll say this: I've suffered depression at different times in my life, and this song makes me always believe life is worth living. And the truth is, just like the pendulum swings, that things always change, and that there is always a clearing of the storm. There is always a safe harbor one can seek, if one knows where to look for it. By the way, read The Pit and the Pendulum by Poe. Tuomas, the keyboardist, compared his depression to that of Poe's, when Poe lost his mother, sister, and wife all to tuberculosis.
Isaiah Welch I was or still am on that boat of depression, but nighwish and particularly Floor Jansens voice just relaxes things. She is just so amazing, they are amazing. I heard Tomaus wrote that about tarja leaving the band ! I could never understand that, nonsense ! What you mentioned sounds more like the truth. I don’t want to bother anyone here , by the way !
dominic foley its inspired by the poem the pit and the pendulum but the song is in fact written about his feelings and depression after the Firing of Tarja. Tuomas got allot of flack from the fans, and sunk deep in a depression. And it basicly came down to him committing suicide in this song to save him from himself, the section of mother and father is based on a conversation he had with his parents.
This song is a masterpiece! First anticipation and excitement, then astonishment and mesmerising, then tears and goosebumps, then adrenaline and sadness, then goosebumps more tears and mind blown! This is how I watch it 🤘
Thank you for this! This is one of my favorites of theirs. Another I really love is "The Islander" Live from Tempere. Marco, the bassist and supporting vocalist, sings the lead on that one and Floor sings backup. It's a really unique track in their discography and I love how they performed it at that show! It's more folksy, less metal.
If you want to hear Floor pretty much do everything in one song, check out Revamp: Disdain live at Grasspop 2010. She does everything from growls to full on Soprano in that song. She's all over the place.

If you want to check more of her grittiness, check Yours is an Empty Hope, or maybe Ghost River. If you want softer, maybe Sleeping Sun; other good ones for her voice, definitely Greatest Show on Earth, Ever Dream... Also, if you want to check more of the male singer, Marko, you can check the High Hopes cover they did, or the Islander at Tampere (one of my favorites of him). Thanks for this reaction! Loved it!
Thank You. That song. Deep and Dark roller coaster ride to Genius mind of Tuomas Holopainen. In those day,'s Heavy drinking, depression dark suicidal thought's. Tuomas chose life. ❤

Song for the male singer (Marco)... "While your lips are still red" & "the islander". You will be very surprised. Floor becomes his back-up singer. He has his solo career too.
Right, that piece has two vocal styles I forgot to mention: staccato speech-singing and her deeper chest voice with that wonderfully sung line "every form most beautiful".
What many don't catch is when floor does change a word in the original lyrics, she does it to make the song sing properly. If you have any songwriter friends, you will probably find that they massage and change the words of the poem multiple times to find a phrase that suits their particular vocal style. Tuomas seemed to not let Tarja do that to his lyrics, making Tarja's singing seem harsh or clumsy sometimes.
"White Lands of Empathica" is sung by two choir boys: Guy Elliott - lead boy soprano & Tom Williams - second boy soprano and later the child's voice speaking the words "Today, in the year of our lord 2005...". Other than that, this was an enjoyable reaction video.

That last movement, Mother and Father, the only way I can describe Floor’s voice through that section is “crystalline”. Something about it almost reminds me of a water harmonica or someone playing a tune on crystal wine glasses. There’s such a pure, ringing quality to it there that I don’t think I’ve ever really heard her use anywhere else.

@@VocalSplendorStudios Easy to think Floor might be doing the intro, considering the part beginning "Sparkle my scenery . . ." was also originally recorded with a boy soprano. Floor takes on that middle section herself.
The one the writes all the music Thomas makes the songs for the singer. There are a few songs that were written for another singer that Floor is not the best for.... not saying she can't sing it but its just the way the song was written. But the back ground of the song is what helped Thomas get out his inner strife with the release of Tarja. When writing it he was able to get through it. Now initially it was written during the later end of Tarja (he knew she was going to be released from the band) and that is when Annette came in and did the song. Annette is a different type singer than Tarja and Floor (Tarja and Floor kinda are in the same style of singing) So some of the songs later in the albums creation were tailored to Annette style and those songs are the exception.

Nightwish have used "Abby Road Studios" and "Angel (Recording) Studios" in London for their backing tracks👀 Sometimes they use east european studios 🐱👤😎👍Thank you for your Analisys
This song was originally sung by their second singer Anette. It was written after the dismissal of Tarja and the ensuing backlash that Tuomas recieved because of the way it happened an open letter after the last concert she performed with them. He was very depressed afterwards and had suicidal thoughts which is laced throughout the song. It also has ties to The Pit and The Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe. For more grit from Floor and strait growling watch Yours is and Empty Hope- Live Princess Baltic Cruise. Marco the bassist is so underrated, checkout The Islander- Live Tampere. Also his versions of Ave Maria might interest you, there's one with Floor that is awesome!
thanks for the lyric version Floor "could" sound like the choir boys.. probably why its a common mistake on a side note.. theres a few uploads of the demo version.. Marco does all the vocals on it as Nightwish still hadnt found a new fromtwoman
I love Marco on The Islander. I was totally mind blown when I first heard that because I heard this first, and had only heard him distort, so I first thought the male vocal was Troy; which I later realized isn't on stage for this one. I do love his singing too, though. You should definitely think about reacting to 'My Walden or Alpenglow for all three of them singing and some very cool instrumental work.
Thank you for those smooth and gentle pausings in this particular song, that allows us fans although a joyfull hearing experience. So we all can see, it's possible to do a reaction of it without "butchering". Btw.: Marco Hietala also shines with a softer style on The islander (Tampere) and While your lips are still red (Wembley).
Totally agree with you about Floor's versatility. Nightwish can now perform any song from their back catalogue, as Floor can sing in any style, any genre, including Tarja's and Annette's. And let's give credit to Marko, as he has a versatile voice, also. Check out 'Voice of my Father', an incredibly powerful and emotional performance from Marko, and Nightwish's amazing cover of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes', with Marko on lead vocals. Such a shame he has left. We can only hope he will return, some day. Voice of my father; ua-cam.com/video/dwvqpRRCDdE/v-deo.html High hopes; ua-cam.com/video/IClqCyS4IRY/v-deo.html
I think you should react to Diana Andukinova singing Human and wicked game she is 14n half . I think Diana will blow you away. Her voice goes deep in places also she does some sort of yodelling . I like Floor with this group. I was just wondering why some singers have the mike away from the and then close in the same song. Ann Wilson does this in almost all of her songs and why today she can still do it I've been watching the songs they've been singing in their tour on you tube and she still sounds powerful but in the songs she makes other things instead of the words.
Not Floor at the start. It's actually a choir boy. I actually think it adds a nice, ethereal quality to the intro...Floor's voice, indeed any trained soprano's voice, is far more full-bodied and resonant in a wider frequency spectrum, but that's not always what you want in a song, depending on what the lyrics are trying to convey.
If you liked this song, check out Greatest show on earth! She does a variety of singing there as well, and even does an impressive growl section. She really can do everything!
I wouldn't have thought about the "diction" issues on my own. Thanks! On the original album track (which featured the previous Nightwish lead vocalist, Anette), there was a couple vocal sections provided by choir boys, creating that "ethereal" atmosphere. Floor's interpretation was to provide that sound herself (Except for the beginning which was still a choirboy falsetto).
The beginning was her it's a choir boy shes do the second choir vocals in the slow down live but I'm sure someone pointed that out to u sorry to reiterate luv ❤❤ but poet and the Pendulum is such an amazing song to.us nightwish fan
Thanks for the great reaction. This is piece is as self portrait of Tuomas feelings, lead song writer and composer, when they dismissed Tarja. I think you are ready for the Greatest Show on Earth in Tampere. Although if you want to see the rough in her voice you should react to Romanticide, Wacken.
Well, what to react to next? I think you have heard Ghost Love Score, Sancta Terra, and now PatP. So you have heard her ethereal head voice, her classical soprano, her belting, her gritty rock voice. There remains: Ballad singing: Sleeping Sun (live at Tampere) Folk "Disney princess" voice: My Walden (live at Tampere) Death metal growling / Hardcore shouting: Yours Is An Empty Hope (live on the Nightwish Cruise) Sultry cool jazz singing: Slow, Love, Slow (live Orlando 2012) I think that would be about it. But they're cooking up a new album just now, to come out in early 2020, so who knows what she'll come up with. :) Great reaction :)
You are right about there being a backstory to this song. The song is about the final break-up with their first vocalist (Tarja Turunen). A childhood friend of Tuomas. The problems started when she started dating her now husband. He convinced her that she should get more money and recognition as the rest of the band because she was the star of the show. She then also started to refuse to perform in venues below a certain crowd size. They even had to cancel a whole US tour because of that. As you can imagine this caused a lot of tension in the band. It was then decided that she would record 1 more album and then leave the band. But the situation got so bad that the band decided to fire her at the end of the running tour. Litterly at the last concert (recorded as the "end of an era" live dvd) they fired her after their last song. They did that by giving her a letter with and explanation for the clean break. As an explanation to the fans they also published the letter on the internet (not the best way to handle this). It was intended to be as transparent as possible but it backfired catastrophically. The public backlash of the press and fans was mostly directed against Tuomas. Who was thrown in to deep depression because of this. He saw everything he worked for so hard for fall apart in front of him and also could no longer see a future for the band. Because he knew that a real suicide would hurt his close family and friends he decided to commit suicide artistically. The closing section of the song is a thank you to his parents that took him in again when he was at his worst. They were responsible for putting hem back again. There are two more songs that i think that are interesting for you to take look at concerning Floor and her vocal techniques that you have not seen yet. 1 Floor singing a aria from Puccini called "O Mio Babbino Caro" for a dutch tv program there is small interview with English subtitels at the start. ua-cam.com/video/Od_qcbw3f5Q/v-deo.html 2 Floor growling. It is an acquired taste but it is another facet of her versatility. The song is called "Disdain" when she was still in the band called "Revamp". ua-cam.com/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/v-deo.html
That is one side of the story. Important to remember that there is another, and the truth is likely somewhere in the middle. What certainly is true is that he was suffering almost intolerably and this song really is an extraordinary story.
@@hazelangus I realize that. I have nothing against Tarja (i have all her all her solo album for a reason). I think both sides have made mistakes and could have handled the situation better then they did. :-)
@@ronaldboers8061 I agree with that. It was very sad at the time, for all concerned. Still, I can't argue with the eventual result - Floor is an absolute marvel. :-)
@@hazelangus If not for Floor i would most likely not have listened to them. I got to know Tarja (allready a solo artist at the time) first and heared the story of her being fired via a letter pretty soon after that. Since i like Tarja i decided that i wanted nothing to do with the band. Then i heared that their current vocalist was Dutch (so am i) and i decided to give her a chance with the intention to hate it. The first song i ever listened to was "Ghost love score" live from Buenos Aires. Can you guess what happened next? :-)
I completely LOVE Tarja. Without Tarja I would’ve never been here. She is my God. People of you’re offended about religious aspects well I’m sorry but not sorry. I can pray and honor anything or anyone. Tarja gave me something special some people don’t have and she gave me HOPE...
The opening singing is a boy soprano. "Lead boy soprano: Guy Elliott, 2nd boy soprano: Tom Williams, courtesy of the Reigate St Mary's Choir School, Choirmaster: John Tobin"
My initial impression was a boy soprano but I wasn't aware that Nightwish used pre-recorded tracks when performing live. I've sung music impersonating a boy soprano before so I wasn't sure.
@@VocalSplendorStudios Well, they use a lot of pre-recorded backong tracks. They have to. They can't go on tour with the London symphony orchestra that you can hear on thei songs. And leaving those out would make it something else than a symphonic metal 😉. But it really is understandable to make ghat mistake, as, like you heard later, Floor CAN do it. But if you listen that first part closely (preferably with earphones) you can hear that it's a "traditional" choirboy even in pronounciation wise (wovel modification I suppose).
Is there actually a second choirboy on this live version? I know it's on their album version (I don't think Anette even had that in her "toolbox"), but here Floor does that second part.
Great reaction and explanations! I think you'd appreciate Nightwish - Sleeping Sun (Live In Tampere, Finland) 2015 It's amazing! Floor's voice is angelic!
Marko has also pretty damn wide range in this one. From the really rough lead in the Dark Passion Play to soft and tender harmonization with Floor in Mother and Father.

Don't mind that you have to take pauses for the copyright reasons. No need to apologize: You can actually just use them to give your comments, like you usually do. Then they go smoothly, and us listeners don't pay attention to that pasing, for whoever clicked on this video knows it's a voice teacher making the video, so the pauses should be expected :) And that's your content, your part in building the whole with others - so actually: 'working for your bread' keeps you from making the copyright infringement :) Being business-like and havin fun combines in your work: you just do that, and copyright is protected too - this time activity is not considered stealing, but laziness is, and gets punished :)
I like a lot of music but nightwish with all the layers ,transitions, emotions and tightness in the band is plain beautyfull. The storytelling and how it is composed , for me its the level of old masters mozart, bach, beethhoven. Tuomas is one hell of a writer.

The irony is that Anette left them high and dry, mid-tour - but without that, Nightwish would not be what they are today, because of Floor.
Thank you!
classic! Thx for reviewing!
Try the islander by nightwish it's Marco singing with floor backing him he has an amazing voice as well
Floor...the Dutch Goddess..❤️
thanks for the lyric version
Floor "could" sound like the choir boys.. probably why its a common mistake
on a side note.. theres a few uploads of the demo version.. Marco does all the vocals on it as Nightwish still hadnt found a new fromtwoman
Watch the 'islander live at tampere ' also brilliant show , love your breakdown you didn't go like some do fantastic.....
Song of Myself live at wacken 2013 next! :D
Yep

Floor is a story teller 💖
Or don't forget about Greatest Show on Earth. Masterpiece!
I would love to see you react to Nightwish's cover version of Pink Floyd's High Hopes
Emppu's face at 11:34 = Me when I first watched this version. :-D
Thanks my lady for this!
I always cry on the last part 😭❤
You definitely need to check out The Islander and The Greatest show on Earth
Check out Everdream or Storytime from Wacken 2013. It will show you even more of Floor's range.
Another Nightwish experience : Stone people and Creek Mary 's Blood from End of an Era DVD
The backstory of this song is important to understanding the meaning.
What about Marco (bassist) singing? Listen song Islander and tell us what do you think about him.
Another lovely reaction!! Thank you so much for your special insights into the singing!
Well, what to react to next? I think you have heard Ghost Love Score, Sancta Terra, and now PatP. So you have heard her ethereal head voice, her classical soprano, her belting, her gritty rock voice. There remains:
Ballad singing: Sleeping Sun (live at Tampere)
Folk "Disney princess" voice: My Walden (live at Tampere)
Death metal growling / Hardcore shouting: Yours Is An Empty Hope (live on the Nightwish Cruise)
Sultry cool jazz singing: Slow, Love, Slow (live Orlando 2012)
I think that would be about it. But they're cooking up a new album just now, to come out in early 2020, so who knows what she'll come up with. :)
Great reaction :)
And for Marco with Floor as backing, Kiss, While Your Lips are Still Red - Wembly
@@williamklett6660 I seem to keep forgetting things, she is just too versatile for my memory :)
@@oliphant2848 Pretty much nothing she can't do. Wouldn't want to hear her do Screamo, lol, but yeah, she is a mutant, beyond other mere humans.
That was a great reaction. Thank you!🤘👍💯
You are right about there being a backstory to this song.
1 Floor singing a aria from Puccini called "O Mio Babbino Caro" for a dutch tv program there is small interview with English subtitels at the start. ua-cam.com/video/Od_qcbw3f5Q/v-deo.html
2 Floor growling.
@@Garbox80 I think it was only on the album version
Great reaction and explanations! I think you'd appreciate Nightwish - Sleeping Sun (Live In Tampere, Finland) 2015
It's amazing! Floor's voice is angelic!
Marko has also pretty damn wide range in this one. From the really rough lead in the Dark Passion Play to soft and tender harmonization with Floor in Mother and Father.
Awesome...one of my favorite NW Epic songs!
You can find information on the reason for the song.
Oh...new Subscriber!!
Have you reacted to "I Want My Tears Back" or "Romanticide" Floor gets all growly in it!
.
Don't mind that you have to take pauses for the copyright reasons. No need to apologize: You can actually just use them to give your comments, like you usually do. Then they go smoothly, and us listeners don't pay attention to that pasing, for whoever clicked on this video knows it's a voice teacher making the video, so the pauses should be expected :)
And that's your content, your part in building the whole with others - so actually: 'working for your bread' keeps you from making the copyright infringement :) Being business-like and havin fun combines in your work: you just do that, and copyright is protected too - this time activity is not considered stealing, but laziness is, and gets punished :)
Darn at the end she always gets me, nice reaction btw.
I like a lot of music but nightwish with all the layers ,transitions, emotions and tightness in the band is plain beautyfull. The storytelling and how it is composed , for me its the level of old masters mozart, bach, beethhoven. Tuomas is one hell of a writer.
Amazing!
Yours is an empty hope live either wembly or tempere they are both good wembly just shows more of floors mouth positioning on certain parts. Greatest show on earth at tempere is a really good one as well its a long song with more variety but worth watching
The song at the beginning is not sung by Floor, it's a prerecord of a choir boy.
Nightwish - Your's is an empty hope (Wembley) if you want to hear little more "growls" ;)
