I believe the way a singer should be judge is by their live performance, not by listening to the album. And floor chooses how to sing it and honestly the way she do it, makes you feel it
I think if we compare the vocals in section 3 with her rendition of 'Shallow' we can clearly hear that she is not struggling, she is including 'breathy' vocals as a choice to create an effect
Her breath control is amazing and to belt those words .holy crap .So pure and clear .. She sounds way better than most opera singers . No manufacturered vibrato. Technicality along with her artistry is perfect that's why she makes the big bucks ...

I mostly agree with you except for your comment regarding her having difficulty with the operatic in section 3(The Pacific), from my perspective she is not going for full operatic, but it is a stylistic choice that she is making. We know from other live performances and from Best Zangers that she is capable of doing operatic singing. I watch a lot of vocal coach reactions and most are very informational, but I think that as an occupational hazard, there's sometimes a tendency to over emphasize the standard techniques and forgetting a bit about the artistic choice(what fits the song, what the singer is trying to express).

I agree, and is not the first time, she tends to say it on almost every single NW video, very hard judging Floor's ability on her operatic style, I feel that she's constantly comparing Floor with Tarja, when their styles are totally different and shouldn't be compared
Allow me to repeat my words from today: I don't quite understand your (Elvann's) way of responding and react. You tell that you can hear that Floor is not a professional opera singer. And no, she is not. Then I think, why comment in such a way? Why comment on what she doesn't sound like and what she isn't? There are many things she doesn't sound like. So what is your purpose with this? It seems almost like you absolutely will find something negative about Floor. But that cannot be true?

This song will always be my favorite song. I’m such an emotional person and know what it’s like to be at your lowest of lows.
I think the vocals in 'The Pacific' were meant to kinda drop out like that to make them feel emotional, like she's choking back tears as she sings it. At least that was always the impression I got before your critique of it - but an interesting take nonetheless! I consider this song to be Tuomas' magnum opus, and this performance to be the best rendition of it I've heard.
Also, don't listen to the handful of complainers in the comments. Tarja and Floor both have these weird sub-fanclubs that get very offended on their behalf if you say they were anything less than flawless. Floor herself has said that she's watched several of the "reaction" videos of their performances, and finds the ones from vocal coaches and performers the most interesting.
Although it is hard for Tuomas to play, this is his masterpiece in songwriting and storytelling amongst all the other masterpieces he wrote. Floor does this song justice with her versatility in singing. It is a sad story, but even without knowing the lyrics, it shows you what he has gone through and gives some understanding to what other people with mental issues still have to deal with.

Watching your uncut version, and yeah, they still use the studio choir boy vocals for the opening of the song. I have heard that Floor had offered to actually sing those parts, but Tuomas declined.
ohh really? I wished it was her singing there, I feel it would tie things together, but maybe it's a musical artistic vision thing Tuomas had in mind and it does make sense in this case!

This was just what I needed after another 12+ hour day of hardcore trucking 😊
I love a few things about this performance. The visual effects and lighting add so much to an already amazing performance. There’s the way you can tell Floor feels the emotion and communicates it to the crowd and you know the audience feels it. There’s Marko doing the same WHILE PLAYING PERFECT BASS. There’s Kai nailing the drums. There’s Emppu doing his part exactly as he should.
Then there’s Tuomas who’s still reliving the story of how this song was written (even if it’s not quite as intense with the passing of time) and his friends and band mates stopping by on stage to offer comfort and reassurance.
This is epic musical theater and I’m glad we get to experience it even if only on video.
Now, it’s fantastic on its own, but thank you for giving us your interpretation and thoughts as well! I love getting the opinions and nuances from experts who are also fellow fans 👍
One of the songs I hope you get a chance to react to from the Wembly show is Shudder Before the Beautiful. It’s such a wonderful, upbeat, feel good song with lots of dynamic changes in tempo and volume and it seems like NOBODY has reacted to it 😜 It’s one of my favorite songs to enjoy as I’m driving into a beautiful sunrise or sunset ❤️

Love the reaction as always but I have a few things to say about part 3 "the Pacific". First of all, this song was written for Annette not Tarja nor was it written for Floor so it wasnt supposed to sound operatic. Secondly, Floor never goes full on opera even though most of us know that she can if she wants (she has done so before) but I feel that not only Floor but also Tuomas would rather a different approach. I mean, look at the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful, there was nothing operatic about it. And as for struggling, I think the only thing she struggled with is keeping her own emotions in check as she has stated in a few interviews that she feels the music very strongly and has said she is hyper sensitive or something along those lines. It was a great performance none the less and those end notes, like weeping 😢 But like I said, loved the reaction. Thanks for the uncut version, I can only imagine the amount of work that went into trying to figure this one out and get it uploaded.

Hi Elvann! I liked rhe album version of this song when it was released... But never liked the live versions with Annette... Floor's version is great and is the same as in Ghost Love Score... She added her touch and made it better than the original.. Have fun editing your videos to make them pass the cut with the algorithm!!!

I don'T mind getting demonetized, but being blocked is a whole other topic :\ This song is one of the longest and there are long instrumental parts. I just finished watching both this version of the video and the uncut (which I thank you for sharing!)... and now I’m listening to your music on iTunes & I LOVE the soft, smoky almost huskiness in your voice when in your lower register, and when you’re singing softly. It’s not breathy. It’s beautiful. Your chest voice has the same kind of solid, robust, very well supported weight that Floor’s has. Very lovely & obviously you’re a naturally gifted singer. 🙂

Floor is not an opera singer. She sings in a symphonic metal band but her voice is the most versatile of all three
Don't you soon have to completely accept that Tarja no longer sings in Nightwish and that they therefore have a completely different sound than the original very classic song style and that Floor is not primarily a classical singer? It doesn't really make sense to reaact to that she / Floor doesn't sing as classically as you might wish. In fact, it's almost as if you thought Britney Spears should sound a bit more classic or metal and that she didn't actually sound like a classic or metal singer. In fact, you could also criticize Tarja for not sounding so rock and metal-like. It doesn't make sense either. Britney is Britney. Floor is Floor. Tarja is Tarja. Take them as they are. And do not criticize them for what they are not.
PS: The phrases she sings where you might wish she sang with greater professional classical vocal conviction I'm pretty sure are pretty deliberate on her part. For now, the phrases and this part of the song emerge with a more pure and virginal approach that just fits in quite well with this place. Here, a traditional classical singer (in my ears) would give a completely different sound that does not fit the lyrics and mood of the music.
She’s not comparing Tarja though? She’s comparing her style with the style Floor used. Yes she said that it’s not like what she’s used to, but she still said that it was good for what it was. Diction is hard when you’re singing that high
@@mangalover0149 Maybe it's not a direct / explicit comparison between Floor and Tarja. But when I hear in this video Elvann talks about Floor's style and technique, I think it's clear that Elvann's entrance to love Nigthwish is partly the time with Tarja and partly her own singing style, which is just as classic as Tarja, among other things, with a lot of vibrato and the traditional classical / opera-like sound. When Floor comes with her own more metal and rocky style with some classic spice added here and there, she is apparently judged on Elvann's original preferences and not on Floor's own terms. This is why I ask if it might not be time to accept that Tarja (and that song style) is no longer in Nightwish. A more fair alternative might be to make reaction videos with Tarja. After all, there are many who would be very excited about that. Not me. I first stood on the Nightwish train after Tarja stopped.
As others point out, I also think there has been a striking tendency to criticize Floor's classic style, or even that she doesn't sing certain songs with classic sound.
Thank you. What I love about Floor is that when she decides to use her head voice doesn't automatically mean she will go pure operatic. There is no reason why should a singer of contemporary music be bound by "dogmatic" approach of classical singing when using their head voice. Floor just does what is needed for the song to sound as good as possible.
I listen to my favourite opera (operetta, mass, concert...) recordings when I want to hear pure operatic vocals. I don't expect NW to sound like an opera and frankly, if the operatic vocals were the only vocals they could do, I wouldn't waste my time listening to them. That is the main reason why I didn't care much about NW when Tarja was with them. I don't quite get why is she so revered and I don't like how she sounds. Her operatic techniques are far from great. That enunciation and tree-felling vibrato (far from the quality of the operatic techniques of the professional classical singer) are grating. Considering she doesn't use any other techniques in her singing, I would expect her to be an expert in the operatic. So no, NW with Floor or bust.

There is a fine line between convenience and the need to understand what is being sung. It is precisely why I can't listen to Tarja, I simply can't understand what she is singing. When I know the lyrics are supposed to be English I expect to at least make an effort to pronounce is in English, not the gobbledygook Tarja sings. Ah well, just an opinion...
I love Tarja, but I must say indeed, diction is not quite her forte ^.^ Still loving her!
While that is true, its quite common that with songs you don't understand the lyrics even if they are in your language... it also different for different people, sometimes can understand it easily, some need many attempts or written lyrics. However, if you really like some song/group, you get the lyrics sooner or later some way, and after that youre most probably to recognise those words next time(s). So it only problem for songs you listen for first time and dont know whether you going to like them or not...
BTW they say that even for classical opera (most sung in Italian) even Italians are reading the lyrics from paper (programme)... dunno but seems logical.
So not top priority for me...
@@SYNtemp for me, even when versed in Italian, I never forget to bring the libretto of the opera I'm watching. And yes it is true sometimes it doesn't matter. However, Tarjas diction is terrible whatever the language probably with Finnish being the exception. If the majority of songs are performed are in English, you as a singer, you better practice. Your audience deserves it, and after 25 years being on stage, Tarja is still horrible. Sorry, I just don't buy the excuses people make when it comes to Tarja and pronunciation.

I've heard this song dozends of time by now, and I agree with you concerning the comparison between Annette and Floor... on the original album version Annette did a good job and I liked it! Live it was not so good, that's been her weak point all the time... And then Floor came up with it live, and she gave the whole song a new dimension! She made it her own, like she did with all previous songs... Like you said, dear Elvann, for the first time you could hear what it has supposed to sound like...

Hi, my english is not so good but i try it. Toumas is a real genius. I think he wrote the lyricks after the band fired Tarja. He came home and his Mother asked him "Why did you so cold? Tell me, You now i will love you everytime". I think he told her everything whats happened for the last 9 years ago. After this he wrote the lyricks and before he performed the music, he changed the lyricks and he but the end with the dead of the poet on the beginning of the song and then he composed the music. What do you think about my meaning?

yeaheeee it's really a lot of cutting. They cut a lot more than what was the original section they were blocking the video for. It kept adding up, and the video is so long it was taking me about 1-2 hour for each new upload to process and such... after 6 times I abandoned and just used the UA-cam tool. It was either that or no Poet & the Pendulum for us xD

Can I make a suggestion, any chance of balancing the audio between the video and your mic? When the video is playing to hear at a regular/normal level, and then when you stop to talk it's "AHH! I guess you have been very unlucky with UA-cam and this video, I've watched like a dozen of reactions to this song and they didn't have to cut a single second and the videos are still there. The copyright strikes and censorship on UA-cam is becoming ridiculous, a few days ago a channel about miniature painting received an strike and had the video taken down because she used the words "colour shading" or something like that and some brand had those words copyrighted... Anyway, thanks for the video!

Nice reaction, even though you weren't able to fit all of the song into the video. When it comes to the comfort of her more classical parts, would you say that you think it's just some shortcomings based on not being as trained as a pure professional classical singer, or is it a mix of her not singing it in quite the same technique? I remember her saying that she isn't very fond of the restrictions of classic opera and she likes to do some things that are considered bad by purists just because she thinks it sounds better. For an inexperienced ear like mine it's hard to know where the line is drawn though, as I don't listen to much purely classical music.
That's a good question!
First, I don't either believe in some of the restrictions that go with classical singing, and I sort of reject them as well. I understand what she's going for in a "oh dear I feel you too manner".
When it comes to this though, I really think it's a matter of two things.
1. She is not a coloratura soprano, which means, her voice doesn't have the same ability to be agile and flexible as singers with that quality in their voices. Some singer are just born with a really high, really agile voice. Sharon might be a coloratura, she can glide in those high notes really easily. On the other hand, that gives Floor more resonance, and roundness in her medium range where Sharon might not come as strong. This is not a matter of skills, it's a matter of voice type, and natural vocal abilities. Floor has a bigger voice, which also means her high end will sounds heavier and less flowy than what a coloratura soprano could do.
2. I don't think it's a matter of choice here, I can hear her not being full on with that section, and having a bit more trouble managing her breath. She actually ends up having that sort of collapsing in her breathing at the end of a line actually, which I actually foresaw about 2 lines before it happened. All along, I was thinking "okay it still sounds beautiful, it's not that noticeable, but but she's definitely walking on eggshells here, I can tell." And then it happened. I didn't want to point it out in the video because people are really quick to jump at my throat for saying anything else than "it's perfect". :\
@@ElvannReacts Thank you for the answer, I found that interesting to read. I certainly don't require my artists to be perfect in order to enjoy them, but I certainly see your point in that people would jump on you for that. That's unfortunately a common Internet mentality.
I'm just glad to be able to learn a little bit more about singing technique here and there, although I'm in the "I may not know much about art, but I know what I like" category. :)

it might not get blocked. IMHO .. this version is equal to if not better than the Wembley version. The video and audio is clearer.
So unfair how copyright owners (and/or Google/UA-cam) treat different reactors! Some channels release the whole song uninterrupted and most just have to add a couple short pauses in the original video but had to strip almost everything away.

Good analysis of the vocals, I think about the verse endings are great too like you, I get annoyed if the singer kind of swallows the ends of words. I like that Tuomas left the choir boys part in the beginning, it is tied to original album version that way and also gives some gredit to the boy who sings it, smart move from Tuomas imho. Happy new decade and do some reactions of the old songs sang by Floor from the Decades tour live in Buenos Aires, I bet you’ll love them versions.

I agree so much with you. I always think her operatic voice was not good enough. In her Phantom performance in Beste Zangers it showed more of her operatic head voice being too weak
I didn't say her operatic voice wasn't good enough tho, I only said it she doesn't sound like professional opera singers when she goes into her head voice. I think she manages to be believable enough though ^.^ But I can see what you mean, her operatic head voice is definitely sounding weaker to me than her more pop/mix voice. Either way she's doing an excellent job at everything she does!

@@maxmattt I got a notification on my phone and opened it straight away to watch. Not reading the description is my mistake i admit. But she's a big nightwish fan and i was excited to see her reaction and her being a big nightwish fan, she should know how passionate their fan base is and therefore not upload this crappy video. If you don't have your equipment to do it available, then just don't do it until you have it and you can do it proper. It's unprofessional and unkind to her fans/subscribers. Yet another thing is that this song is massive in many ways and a big fan favorite.

@@ElvannReacts sorry, i assumed it was technical one. There are other youtubers that have successfully done a reaction to the poet and the pendulum without the copyright problem affecting the video, although i don't know how(I'm not a youtuber myself). They might be able to help you out on that one and for future long songs reactions.
P. S. My comments on your video are not hateful or anything at all in that vein of thinking, i was just and still am disappointed with this video in particular.
