  • Hey ya'll! In this video I will go over my expectations initially of sonography versus what Sonography is really like! Don't get me wrong I love being a sonographer and I wouldn't change it for the world but it is a lot different than I expected! I hope you all enjoy!!

One thing I wish Sonography school teaches is ergonomics and the importance of strengthening your arms and body and getting massages regularly. 80% of Soographers get on the job injury. I’ve been scanning for 9 years and 90% of sonographers I’ve worked with have pain in their neck, shoulders, head, back, and arms. Many had surgery in the shoulders or wrist, trigger point injections in the muscles or steroid injections in their joints. I love love love my job and the pay is great but the irreversible chronic pain I go through everyday is almost not worth it. That’s why so many sonographers go part time or per diem or quit altogether. Just be careful, take care of your body, do your stretches and exercises. Trust me. If you don’t, you will get injured.

Mine did thank goodness but you are absolutely right, as crazy as it sounds ultrasound can really wear on your body.

I’m thinking about going to school for sonography but this is the only con I’m really scared about.. are you saying that doing strength training & getting massages regularly will prevent pain???

I already have the back, neck, and shoulder pain since I was a child for what reason? I don’t know lol. I just realized this is the profession I want to go into, so best know I’m gonna work on strengthening my muscles and stretchin!

I want to thank you, deeply, for this video. I've watched many videos about sonography over the years. I took all of my pre- and co-requisites for my school's sonography program. Then I stumbled upon this video, and it's made me realize, I can NOT handle sonography.
I chose sonography because I wanted a job in the medical field that could avoid blood, wounds, etc.
not one of the videos I have seen before today were this honest about what you deal with and see as a sonographer.
I absolutely can't handle things like this… i only wish I had seen this video a few years ago, before I started school and wasted so much time taking classes I no longer need.

Such a heartbreaking story about the woman who miscarried. I think the fact that I do well under pressure and staying calm in chaos is a good thing for this career. Today I was discussing the field with a friend of mine who is pregnant and she said one of her ultrasounds was great and the girl doing it was really sweet and friendly but another one she had the girl was kind of cold and barely said a word. One thing I DO worry about is that I'm the kind of person who isn't good at multitasking. So if I get a chatty patient I'm gonna have a hard time focusing on scanning and also talking. Even though I'm totally a people person!

Attending learning conferences or getting registered in another modality like general, vascular ob etc. but they drop off after 3 years so you constantly have to be gathering them to keep your license
