I really want to know what kind of schooling is needed to get into the field of ultrasound technology? Super interested and I definitely see the demand for this career in my city!
Hello! Unfortunately most per diem techs (in any place of work) will not be offered medical benefits which is why I think hourly wages are higher for them so that they can pay for their own. Per diems also do not accrue PTO as they technically can create their own schedules or are called in to work “as needed.”
Espi, she’s right! I, as a per diem tech do not get medical benefits or PTO. But she, as a full tome tech, does! The only benefit I get is the option to have a 401k and even then not all per diem places offer that! So it all depends on the place of work 😌
Hehe yay I love that you enjoyed it!!!! I definitely can get them on here. Thank you for your interest in that, Frances! I so appreciate your support, always! ❤️

Would it be easy to start off once you graduated in a outpatient clinic or hospital? I know a hospital is more fast-paced that’s why I’m asking! Love your videos by the way, very informative! 💕
This is a great question! I’ve always gone back and forth with this myself because I started outpatient whereas others started at the hospital. As a new grad, start at any place you are offered a position whether that be in an outpatient or hospital setting because any experience is great experience in the beginning. However, after having worked at the hospital, I feel that you will learn more pathology vs. outpatient because you will be scanning patients who are there for higher level of care. If you ever get the chance to do both, you’ll get to experience both sides and overall become a solid tech.
Morgan, each place is different and has different aspects to it, as Janessa said! She started off in outpatient. And I started off in hospital. It’s all about where you learned and what you’re comfortable with! Thank you for supporting and don’t hesitate to ask anything! We’re here for ya! ❤️

Hi! Oo that’s awesome! There’s usually 1-2 physics classes and 1-2 math classes included depends on the program you apply to. I have a video about ultrasound school info and the classes you may have to take , but depending on if you go toward an associates (2 year) or a bachelors (4 year) program.. you will take your basic math and basic physics classes and then for sure an ultrasound physics class! Love your videos so much! I just got accepted to BSN program and accredited sonography program. However the sonography program only offers a certificate. Do you think getting a certificate will lower your chance to get a job than others who have an associate or bachelor degree? Thank you. Greeting from Texas
Hi Xuyen!! Im happy to hear it’s an accredited program! I don’t think it will lower your chance. Just remember to have your ARDMS board exam registries (SPI, abdomen, vascular, obgyn etc), and make good connections, network, be prepared to be a good student and get close to your preceptors and mentors, and they will be the ones who help you find a job! You only need a bachelors if you want to move up into the field as a supervisor, director, or professor/ teacher. If you plan on only scanning an associates is just fine 🙂
If you work at a place with other coworkers you can definitely ask for help. There are some jobs where you are the only sonographer so you can ask the doctor or radiologist that is working for help.
it depends on where you live/ city, state/ hospital or outpatient.. most places hire their students after they graduate but it's a job all about networking! the field is definitely hiring right now!
I also live in Vegas and I’m applying for the ultrasound program next year. I’m thinking of doing outpatient, but out of curiosity which hospital is hard to get into (that you were talking about in the video)? I’m doing shadowing at the Centennial hills hospital soon!
That's awesome! Good luck on your journey. Outpatient is good too! There's a few hospitals that are hard to get into, St. Rose, UMC, Mountain View, Southern Hills, Sunrise, and smaller standing ERs. I'd say Valley hospitals and outpatient facilities are easier to get into. Centennial is awesome!! Have fun! :)
depending on your school, they can be different rotations per semester or one location for up to 6months-1 year. they are pretty intense!! some programs require a certain amount to hours of clinical.
Have you met people in their 50's who have gone back to school for ultrasound after having a career in biological research for years? Do you see a lot of older people who pursue this as a second career in their 50's?
Hi Patricia! Yes, I do actually. Many of them. We have techs in their 50s/60s. I had a student last year at our hospital shadowing and she was in her 50s, she came from a different country and even worked in a different field so it was a complete 180 for her and she loved it! I've seen many do this job at any age, don't let a number discourage you!
Thank you for this video, as someone going into school for sonography who smokes, I was wondering if you would be comfortable talking about how frequently you get drug tested on the job. Also just so it's been said I would never practice on patients high.
Hi Shayna!! I’ve only been drug tested twice… and at the beginning of being hired. Never been tested since. So I’m not too sure how often people even really get tested! Maybe that’s something you can ask in a sonography Facebook group to get more feedback🤗
As a per diem, you get more opportunity with your schedule. You tell them when you are available. You are not obligated to work. You are "as needed" and fill in for full-timers when they are PTO or when they call out, as well as if it's busy and they need extra help you can come in. They usually pay much higher as a per diem because there most likely will not be benefits attached to the contract.
As far as "once a week" that's the beauty of per diem. If a place allows you to work once or twice a week, you can. It depends on the contract of where you work, for instance I work at an outpatient facility which requires 2 days a week. Then I schedule the hospital around that.
Hi! Is it possible to know what majors fall under to be a sonographer? I am actually having a hard time because college applications are due by 11/30. I'm a resident in California. Thanks a lot
Hi!! They can be anything under health sciences.. comprehensive medical imaging.. radiology.. sonography.. ultrasound... diagnostic medical imagining.. your best bet is to ask the guidance counselor of the school itself! I hope this helps! ✨
@@daphnecontreras1218 you have to make sure they have an ultrasound route! Like an emphasis in ultrasound. Because radiology can include xray, cat scan, nuclear medicine, and MRI!
Hellooo, I have a question! When looking at salaries online in my area it tells me an estimate of how much I can make if I’m a “obgyn” ultrasound tech or “Abdominal” ... but what if I have multiple registries will I make a lot more ?
Hi! Having more registries can give you a little raise but not much. Many people make the same as others with one registry or even more registries. Depending on where you work, hospital or outpatient, cost of living in the city, and your experience will determine your pay range.

As far as "once a week" that's the beauty of per diem. If a place allows you to work once or twice a week, you can. It depends on the contract of where you work, for instance I work at an outpatient facility which requires 2 days a week. Then I schedule the hospital around that.
Do you have to wear scrubs at your job cause I’ve heard there’s not really a dress code required
I’ve always worn scrubs at all of my jobs. 🙂 But just depends where you work of course.
@@lolgeselle ok thanks for letting me know !
@@lolgeselle a community college near me have a radiologist major. Is that a good way?
@@lolgeselle thank u so much for answering!! I was a little confused on how it worked lol.
