- What’s the real story behind Tom and Jerry? What made the cartoon so special? And was Tom and Jerry really made for deaf people?
Today we’re going to be discussing everyone’s favorite cat and mouse! William Hanna and Joseph Barbera wrote, produced, and directed 114 Tom and Jerry shorts from 1940 through 1957, and the series was loved by both the young and the young-at-heart. But even the most die-hard fans will tell you that some of the shorts haven’t aged well, and the producers re-edited and removed tons of culturally insensitive material in a desperate attempt to cover their tracks. But they can’t hide anything from us, and we’re going to tell you all about the Tom & Jerry Cartoons that Were Too Hot for TV!

They need to bring these back! Now all we have are younger generations who are overly-sensitive and get offended with EVERYTHING!
They get that from school more than cartoons.
I can’t believe how but hurt people get over things like cartoons. 🙄 Yes, some of those depict attitudes that were prevalent in the past that are objectionable today…that's because they are artifacts of the past. No child today is going to sublimate such attitudes if their parents are diligent in teaching them *that* they are wrong, and *why* they are wrong. Find me the person who took up smoking because they saw a cartoon character smoke, if they weren't given examples or positive feedback on smoking from their parents or peers. Children will only be desensitised to violence if they actually think a two dimensional drawing of a cat or a coyote being hit with a hammer or blown up with explosives represents the real world in any way. Even especially doltish preschoolers generally are aware that cartoon depictions have _nothing_ to do with reality - that’s why overblown and unrealistic (and simplistic) notions are defined by the adjective “cartoonish”! 🙄
Loved Tom and Jerry then…’40s-‘50s, etc and still look forward to seeing them now.
I'm the same way about Scooby-Do.
William Hannah & Joseph Barbera, gone but not forgotten 😢
ALSO HAD A RECORD LABEL : dig up Earl Gains : My Best of Luck to You - a DEEP SOUL lp , beaytiful love ballads 1967. Totally 4gotten. 2 lps + later cds.
I was born in the 80s and when I watched Tom and Jerry I looked at it as a cartoon nothing more nothing less it was good comedy entertainment. I grew up on Tom and Jerry and Woody Woodpecker and Bugs Bunny and Friends these were the classics that I've enjoyed.
When I grew up in the 70’s, we didn’t have to be told do not try this at home because we weren’t idiots.
I still have my collections of Hanna Barbera and Looney Tunes, Popeye cartoons.
You do realize that those disclaimers are not for the audience. They are a liability shield for the networks broadcasting, as well as the production companies that produced whatever nonsense you were about to watch. Litigation became more and more of a threat to big business in the 70s-early 80s.
Be careful with the word idiot, coming from a generation that continued to play lawn darts long after they were banned outright
I liked Foghorn Leghorn. The love-starved hen shrieking, “A man!” was classic.
Historical document...omg I loved and still love all those cartoons from back in the day. Tom and Jerry forever!
I hate all the bans and editing of cartoons of the past. A bunch of snowflakes!
Well said why should our old greats be changed because it may offend or it offends some one get a grip people
I agree in some degree. Slap a major warning on it and let us watch it uncensored and unedited
Bring back SPEEDY N SLOWPOKE GONZALEZ 😂😂😂

I Wasn't Much Of A Cartoon Watcher When I Was Little, But We Have Seen For The Last 4 Years Is So Evil And They Dare Compare These Cartoons?
The older Tom and Jerry cartoons should not have been banned and left the way they were and they should be brought back to TV stations they were very good to watch on the TV stations in the1960
Saturday Kids' Movie Matinee at the neighborhood movie theater would show a half hour of Tom and Jerry cartoons, along with Droopy, and Looney Toons, then there was a short (usually 3 Stooges), then a full-length movie ("The Crawling Eye", "The Giant Claw", or a western). None of the cartoons were edited, and every kid knew the characters couldn't get hurt.
They say it was violent, it wasn't, a cartoon!! For heavens, we never did what cartoons did!!
If they are calling Tom & Jerry violent, what the hell is South Park??
My brother stabbed my dad in the butt with a knitting needle cause he saw it on Tom and Jerry, it was awesome 😅😅
Exactly! I did what the three stooges did. Paralyzed 4 frens but we were kids...
@@TwistedFister88 My sister and I did the "pick two" thing from the 3 Stooges. At least, until mom gave us "the look".
Btw, I always picked the thumb and pinkie. Nearly impossible to do.
@@TwistedFister88 your lying!!
My favorite was Mighty Mouse. “Here he comes to save the daaay. Mighty Mouse is on the way!”
No way! He was a goodie goodie
I think it's a good idea for parents to sit down with their kids and answer any questions they have. I'm almost 59, the youngest of three boys, and I've never let any cartoon inspire me to violence.
I never seeimg a cat and mouse use guns or explosives on each other you know the cartoon is unrealistic and that what makes it funny
I've always liked Tom and Jerry cartoons, but I never took anything about television seriously, because it's just for entertainment, just like the internet it's just for entertainment, it has it good uses as well, but when common sense is taken out of the equation, that's when everyone get offended🙄
This video was eye-opening! I grew up watching Tom and Jerry, but I never realized the depth of the controversies surrounding some of the episodes. It's impressive how the creators navigated through sensitive issues and adapted the cartoons over time.
These cartoons are CURRENTLY shown on the MeTV network EVERY weekday and on Saturday mornings. Several were actually highlighted in this video INCLUDING those that were deemed inpatriate! LOVE 'em!!!
I'm 53. I loved re-runs of Tom and Jerry cartoons as a kid in the 70's, and I love them to this day. I'm a pacifist and not racist in the slightest. Only idiots are influenced by cartoons.
You old codger!53!

Not officially your don’t. Many of the cartoons mentioned haven’t made official release. Warner Brothers is to afraid of offending anyone. Amongst the Looney Tunes shorts there’s what’s called The Censored 11. 11 cartoons that were taken off tv in the late 1960’s and have rarely been seen since. They are deemed Too Racist for anyone to see. Yet some are amongst the best made cartoons in that catalog-because of the quality of the animation and the music. You’ll not find a better animated cartoon than Coal Black & the Sebben Dwarfs.
Another factor is that Warner Bros was hiring Black actors at a time most studios wouldn’t hire them at all. Although some saw their cartoons as full of stereotypes, all humans were fair game in LT cartoons. From Egghead to Elmer and Yosemite Sam to all the movie stars of the day. Everyone was fair game.
Sure, there were the propaganda shots during the war, but that’s part of our history and both sides made them.
Finally, I’m not asking to have them on TV. I want them available on Blu Ray. Then you have a choice. You can either buy them or not.
I have the DVDS and am glad everything is there.

I grew up with these cartoons and I turned out just fine. I never tried to hurt anyone because of what I saw on a cartoon. I knew the difference between real and make believe. Geez, people these days think they’ve got the right to ban everything. What about our rights to not want these things banned? These are funny cartoons. Video games kids play are WAY worse. 🙄
My sisters and I didn't find "Tom and Jerry" cartoons funny. We were watching TV in the late 1950s/early⁷1960s. We also didn't find Terrytoons--Casper, Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckyl etc--or Woody Woodpecker funny. We were staunch Warner Terrytoons and Merry Melodies fans. The Max Fleisher Popeye cartoons were good as well. We also enjoyed the Disney longer cartoons which he featured on his show on a case by case basis. And although not technically "cartoons" we were great "Three Stooges" fans. For the record, we all grew up normal. No racial prejudices, battery charges or other antisocial behavours. We were brought up to know the differences between reality and fantasy, and to respect the rights others as to religeon and culture. Parental involvment and guidance. And we were happy kids. Except for those danged Russian missiles!
Agree! Couldn’t have said it better! Love your comment!
Tom and jerry with my favorite cartoon they need to leave it alone.
They are brilliant cartoons, simple as..
Why did the good cartoons disappear?
Pecos Pest is my favourite😂
Roadrunner and Coyote. Watched it on Japanese TV in the 60s.
Arigato
Of course I do!! Tom and Jerry, awesome!!!
I wasn't much of a fan of Tom and Jerry, but I have a glass with one of Jerry's relatives....Tuffy. It was my grandfather's nickname, so it was something to appreciate. I mostly didn't like the cartoons because Tom and Jerry rarely talked.....same with Wile E Coyote and the Roadrunner. It's funny.....I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and while I remember a lot of the cartoons, I rarely watched the majority of them. Maybe an episode here and there. I do remember liking the Flintstones and Jetsons.
The 40’s-60’s Tom & Jerry cartoons were an after-school staple for me on the local UHF channel in the 80’s. I saw all the bits with the racial stereotypes and “Blue Cat Blues” wasn't left out. I can’t say I’m comfortable with all things Mamie Two-Shoes now, but I did find her interesting, always thinking that she was lady of the house.
That was a very fair and well-done presentation. I'm in the mood to argue now, but there's no one to argue with here.
road runner - pink panther
If they put a warning at the beginning, it is up to the viewer or in the case of children for parents to turn it off or not. I would think, this would be an education to the youth to be pointed out why they should not say, or do thing against any other person or group. Sound like a parent should get their face out of the telephone and pay attention.
To remove human error from the books makes us less than perfect. We will become hypocrites.
Thankfully the BBC showed the original versions of the old Fred Quimby-produced Tom & Jerry cartoons in the UK back in the 1960s and 70s. That's when we were still able to laugh without taking offence at everything. Personally, I'm sick, sore and tired of the professional offence-taking snowflakes that seem to run everything these days.
I grew up watching these cartoons…I’m a cat lover with 3 of my own, and love all animals. I have no desire to hurt or maim them, never have. People go nuts over nothing anymore
It's actually funny that the warnings are for parents. Kids love slapstick humor, which is what cartoons were. Being able to teach historical lessons would be priceless, if allowed.
Tom and Jerry was banded because it was too much violence
And also Tom and Jerry they were very funny too
They're just cartoons they're just imaginary stuff you know not real
I clicked to see "This TOM AND JERRY Short" that was supposedly "BANNED For 45+ YEARS", and instead I got a general overview of the cartoon's history that I mostly already knew about. So thanks for the clickbait title. I'll be on guard to not watch anything else by you from now on.
The violence in the old school like Tom and Jerry cartoons are nothing compared to the cartoons now.
I love Tom and and Jerry. It’s one of my favorite cartoon shows. I prefer the classic cartoons over the modern ones
Censorship is always wrong.
You left out the biggest controversy of all, the names. 1940 the Germans were called Jerrys the British Tommies and who always won Jerry.
I was born in 1945 right after the bomb fell on Heroshima. I always liked Tom and Jerry as well as Porky pig and Daffy Duck Tyke and spike
I really got a laugh at Tyke and Spike on time when Spike took Type on a picnic. A cat came along and stole a sandwich. Tyke got it back and Spike said "Throw it away. It's dirty!"
It certainly is not dogs and cats behave. They fight over food and eat each other's food.
I have seen all these shorts in there original forms. I still remember wondering why Mama Two Shoes would keep spelling out wrong, back then I just did not care about that sort of things… still don’t.
Show them all, all of them
You Cannot Erase History, Don't Ban Jack! 😡
Sorry the finish.. toons today are way too violent
CARTOONS TODAY ARE AND ARE WAY WORSE
Edits rewriting, banned..... sounds like censorship to me
Honestly i miss Mammy, she is still an Importing Piece of Cartoon History and just More Iconic.
When I was a kid, I found some of the Tom & Jerry cartoons to be tedious. Some, though, I really liked. I later discovered that the ones I liked were directed by Chuck Jones, not Hanna & Barbera.
I'm good!
If you say "It maybe offensive" some will think that they are supposed to be offended....get some thicker skin!!
I grew up watching unedited versions of all them. I laughed so hard. I never thought it was OK to hurt anyone else, nor treat people of all ethnicities any different from my own. It depends not on the content, but on the parents and environment.
For me, my favorite cartoon was Disney's Robin hood.
For a series though, Xmen tops it all, but have a guilty pleasure for biker mice from mars.
It was a product of its time compared to todays animation its tame and even innocent.
So show them all in its full glory.
My husbands name is Tom.
@cindynimeskem7994 HE An EX-TOMCAT PILOT ...?
Tom and Jerry are no more violent than Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner.
I remember seeing the banned Tom and Jerry shorts before they were banned, humor was used as a form of protest against prejudice as a show of support for the civil rights movement, so banning them was the wrong thing to do because they were a social commentary as well
Over the years I've seen many shows on TV that would get some people triggered and cry "racism". Like watching the Little Rascals and Our Gang kids shows with Spankey, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Froggy, and so on. I can imagine the people getting upset over the stereotype depicting of Buckwheat as someone not too intelligent or eating nothing but watermelon. There were things there that I, as a kid watching those shows in the 60s, didn't give much thought about. But today I doubt that even half of those shows would be allowed on some streaming networks because of the old stereotyping from way back then. But I still like Tom and Jerry and wouldn't think much about anyone being offended or triggered by a few episodes.
I love Tom and Jerry they are my favorite characters i love their cartoon shorts i been watching them since when i was a little child i love them two i have their episodes on DVD collection timeless and classics.
Even the comics are gone on these 60s characters .
I am an avid fan of Tom and Jerry. It was them who changed the way I saw animated cartoons in general. I knew so many of their cartoons by title by mid-1978 (I was eight then). I got reinforced with Tom and Jerry in 1981. Only this time, at age 11, I didn't just want to see my cat and mouse buddies only on TV. I decided to collect any merchandise of theirs I could find. Coloring books, storybooks, a board game, even latch-hook rug kits! But I took all that I watched in stride. To me if the cartoon ended with Tom as the winner, it was bad. If both Tom and Jerry lost, it was bad. If both Tom and Jerry won in the end, it was good. And it certainly was good if Jerry won in the end. Jerry was my hero. I'll even say I was secretly in love with this cute little mousie. Let's conclude with saying that Tom and Jerry are forever partners in business and friendship who just give the public what they want. Because they both LOVE their audiences and they want them to forget their troubles and laugh and be happy. Hey, Tom and Jerry love YOU, TOO!
I am fortunate to have a complete collection of the MGM Tom and Jerry cartoons UNEDITED.
I got it off the net maybe fifteen years ago.
As long as there is an internet the original unadulterated material WILL survive regardless of the current social "Flavour of the month"
HISTORY will be preserved.
Damn Woke is everywhere. Leave our memories alone . I still got the 4 hours long VHS that I recorded Tom & Jerry from TV by the early 80s . Today's kids have smartphones and frigging tik tok is more harmful than old cartoons .
Of course Tom and Jerry are the two black crows woody wood picker and ROAD RUNNER😊
It was just for fun people are just too sensitive. People need to relax and enjoy the cartoons.
I saw most of if not all these banned Tom and Jerry shorts growing up. I found them funny cause I was laughing at Tom and Jerry's action I knew they were cartoons so I knew they wouldn't get hurt cause I also watched wile e coyote and road runner so I knew if it was animated and my grandparents let me watch it was not going to end for the character permanently if the kicked the bucket as the phrase goes
Disney did thT with Song of the South!!!!!!!!!
Might we ban classic art from the National Gallery?
Something is always being banned Tom and Jerry is Tom and Jerry won't ever change love it to this day so do my boys
Bevy’s and. But head was the most inappropriate, playing with fire, and it was said they instagated a child fire for real
Why are so many videos dead on arrival ?
You lost me when it showed that unbelievably stupid whoopie, we can't hurt any ones feelings now can we!?
LOVE THIS CHANNEL
You know what should be banned? Censorship.
Oh good grief! WTH happened to...if you don't like it... move the hell on and don't friggin watch it! 🤷🏻♂️🙄😕🤦🏻♂️
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. VERY WELL SAID.
This was the cartoon I grew up on,
I could remember watching them as a child, my family and friends enjoy watching Tom and Jerry. It is one of the best times of our childhood. From the Small family we spend almost all day watching this cartoon. And don't think that nothing was wrong with it.
These films need to be seen in their entirety (with disclaimers warning parents or people who might be offended) because of their historical value.
I think theres always been a stigma attached to cartoons by the general public, thinking that just because they are cartoons they must not be taking themselves seriously. So when people now, look back at cartoons from then, they think that everything was being done 100% maliciously. A lot of what was put into cartoons depecting any race was alreay exsisting sterotypes put on propaganda throughout history. I feel like simply holding something back from being viewed as a historic piece just because of the racial depections is obsurd. The same people who tear down statues reminding us of past conflicts are most likely the same people who wish to forget and erase our past. Its important that we dont forget about the past, and learn from it, dont just sweep it under the rug and act like it never happened...
I was born 1964 and saw all the tom and jerrys during the 70's ,so what there violent ,they were funny ,Simpson and southpark are worst and they are on the air
Terrible to take Tom and Jerry to animal control. I think they meant well for that baby.
Quit censoring
So do Islamic terrorist watch too much Tom and Jerry since they think is ok to blow up things along with themselves ? 😮😢
I really was hoping for a mid-more indepth video i.e. content, details , & a lot more "memory trip anticipation " topics instead of the trampled down POLITICAL choices it had.
The entire mood, feeling, & essence that was there before play was pressed.
I got a little nostalgically excited when I saw this title but have to admit that
History is history and it should not be erased or censored.
Loved all cartoons in the 60/ 70's. T&J especially. As a child back then I never once concidered it real life and never once cosidered it something to do. And if my friends come up with a clever insult about me I laugh my socks off and try to give one back and we are all best mates. So phaque auff all you modern snowflakes...
I own the whole collection & they shouldn't edit out whts awesome already!
The idea that we need to censor a vintage cartoon is beyond stupid I have seen worse violence and racism in less funny cartoons
My 4 y-o daughter likes T&G but I don't like the "mash up" cartoons they show on the kids channels because they flip from clip to clip for no reason when playing the whole of one episode would keep the continuity. Stuff the woke, play the cartoon as it was made.
My 4 year old is the same, she much prefers the full episode when I can find one.
Great cartoon!🙏👏
Blue Cat Blues can be seen on Tubi!
Tom and Jerry is fun to watch!!! Everythingggg you are saying the same could be said about bugs bunny!!!
I still love bugs bunny the most The old bugs bunny and daffy duck cartoons Android runner
My favorite
I still miss the toons loved them. Don't like a lot of them
I've watched all of them, and loved Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo, Johnny Quest, etc. Hell, I know better than to recreate Wile E. Coyote, but I loved watching them!
I didn't bother watching more than 3 minutes. What's the 45+ year long banned cartoon?
I grew up watching these and other classic cartoons and yet am a pacifist. In fact guns terrify me, so no watching cartoons did not in any way affect me. It is adults who see evils that to a child is just harmless fun!
What's so stereotypical about Mammy? They don't even show her face. My grandmother says it's racist not showing black folks. I can understand with the blackface though, unacceptable.
