In 1989 I was a teenager diagnosed with Bone Cancer and not given a lot of time to live. I remember that this show gave me the best medicine which was laughter… I truly believe it had an effect in helping my body heal. It is imposible to have a gloomy view of the future if someone is making laugh all the time. So I thank you Benny for all the good medicine you brought to my life. Hope to laugh with your jokes again in heaven

As an American kid in the early 1980's, I loved watching The Benny Hill Show! He could make you laugh just by a look on his face.

@rojer9344 That was a so great episode. I miss Benny Hill's humor. There was nothing wrong with it at all IMHO. My Father let me watch Benny Hill Friday nights as a kid in the 70s. Could not see the rest of the week being school nights but I could hear my Father laughing at the episodes. I even remember them eventually coming on Friday's and was able to enjoy the ones I missed on school nights.

Benny Hill was certainly not harmless. He made people think about advertisers, politicians, religious leaders and influencers. The advertisers, the politicians, the religious leaders and the influencers never liked that.

Benny Hill was cross-generational. From kids to pensioners, he made everyone laugh. Yes, some of his comedy was a little risque but never vulgar, he knew where to draw the line. He was definitely one of a kind, a comedy genius.
It's all a matter of opinion. Watching about 10 of these episodes I laughed at two of them and was bored with the rest.

I worked on some of the film inserts on the show and I must say Benny was a true professional at his trade. He understood the technicalities of filming and what all the technicians like myself did, and appreciated our efforts. I must say when I got called I couldn't wait to get to work as knew it would be a laugh all day long and being surrounded by pretty girls was a bonus.
That sounds like a perfect job. It would be great if a previous Benny Hill show employee could put together a "behind the scenes" look at their piece of the show.

In 1993 after Thames had lost their broadcast licence and Benny had also died, I created a pilot show entitled 'Unseen Benny', using out-takes, rehearsal tapes and sketches that never made the final cut. There was so much material that is would have made at least 10 1/2 hour shows but the senior management of Thames International (Pearson Television) deemed his shows to be in the past, despite them still earning good revenues. I hate to say it but I fear all the original tapes I collated have been destroyed. The only programme that showed another side of Benny was made for the BBC and was entitled 'Benny Hill, The World's Favourite Clown' circa 1991.
I have to fight to keep my eyes from watering out of sadness. Here is a man that was loved by millions but couldn't be loved by just one. He died alone.
It's the same for many people who can't find their significant other, such as myself. At around age 45, you forget about it and move on to other things. It's not the end of the world, but it can be tough at times.

His wife had an affair and left him. He never remarried.

His entire personal life is depicted here as a set of negatives - he has few (if any) meaningful personal relationships, no personal interests at all, nearly no personal possessions. For Mr. Hill, the end of his work - and the absence of an S.O. - made it, indeed, 'the end of the world' for him. Sad, indeed for him - but we can remember him in appreciation that he did bring joy and laughter to the world in great quantities!

Some of us prefer isolation and going it alone to the shallow inch-deep and mile-wide "relationships" that many others have. When the "want" for a meaningful relationship becomes a "need," then you compromise your peace of mind, future, and soul, and nothing and no one is worth that.
I remember staying up late to watch his show as a kid. He was by far the funniest thing on TV at the time. Nothing but good memories for me. RIP!

Benny Hill, probably the only scandal free entertainer from that era! The majority of his sketches didn't require translation as there was little dialogue, that was part of the appeal! Saturday night entertainment on UK TV has never recovered. Instead we have "reality" shows.
We watch about 5 hours of news & weather on our old TV per week . The days of good comedy has been destroyed by the woke lunatics .
@@smerchly Get real. Comedy was destroyed by spineless corporations afraid of any controversy. Married with Children was almost cancelled because of ONE woman. The show was popular until the show sucked. All comedy has a shelf life, Benny Hills in 1989 as a shadow of his former self.
And they are ALL staged / fake.
'News of the World' did their best to dig up some dirt on Benny but failed miserably, in the end they paid some dancer to claim that Benny brought some of his 'Angels' back to his flat to give him 'Hand relief' Nobody believed these stories and nobody really cared. He told reporters to 'Publish what you like'. The Benny Hill 'scandal' was I believe one of the non-stories that hastened the end of that particular rag.

Good old days when comedy was light-hearted and funny. I loved his shows. He was one of the greatest entertainers in TV history.
As a Black kid growing up in New York City my brothers and I loved Benny Hill. I think back on his sketches and realize he was a real comedic genius.
As an American, every time I see the Thames logo come up I expect to see Benny Hill next.

in a previous life I edited all the American 1/2 hour Benny Hill shows. He was great to work with, Thames were wrong to sack him, and his life was cut way too short.
My father got into Benny Hill, as "his" British humor, working-class, music hall, not the more arch Monty Python stuff that I liked. My mother always displayed an raised eyebrow when Benny came on, but I did think it was funny, in a "naughty but nice" way. I don't think it was misogynistic -- actually, the Python was more so in some ways than BH. For an American, weird to watch. Both the "naughty but nice" and the open misogyny are less acceptable here, and always have been. Even back in the 1970s, you certainly could not have gotten away with the open misogyny sometimes displayed on the Python. Maybe back in the early or mid 60s. (Before that, women in American entertainment were generally either celebrity sex symbols, or mothers/housewives, and misogyny was not acceptable for another set of reasons.)

I was a kid when I discovered Benny Hill on PBS (parents thought PBS was just Sesame Street back in the day). I finally got the courage to show my Dad when I was a teen. He laughed so hard I thought I'd broke him.

Here in Canada it was on CityTV on fridays right before the baby blue movies at midnight (soft core porn). It was hilarious and we ALWAYS imitated the old bald guy head slapping.

The whole family loved to watch the Benny Hill show every week for years. Lots of fond memories and laughs.
My wife was a Hills Angel and has very fond memories of Benny. She has different memories of some other performers she worked with, but always found Benny a gentleman and even received Christmas cards from him. I think ‘Naughty but nice’ would sum-up Benny. Great fun, certainly not PC, but very in line with a lot of people

You can't hear Yakety Sax without imagining Benny Hill's chase scenes going all over the place in the background after watching his shows, they just meshed so well it became iconic.
It’s hard not to love a guy who does everything he does to soak in the love they have to do what they love; and Benny Hill certainly did love what he did and clearly loved his work and his audience. He evidently lived only for those two things.
Benny Hill was absolutely brilliant. I often watch his shows that never fail to make me chuckle. A very sad loss.

Benny Hill was in negotiations with a New York production, and the unsigned contract was beside his chair at his death. Also, the ones calling Bennie Hill cheap, were the X's, that wanted to buy a nice house with Bennie (meaning, using his money). He didnt want to maintain a house or car. Bennie seemed to be a good sport about being called cheap. There is an interview, where he described the problems, with his former women wanting things, that would clutter and complicate his life, like homes and cars. But, he did rent two flats, and have a door between them, and took vacations in France. Today, we'd say he bordered on minimalism.

I was surprised to learn that he wrote almost all the material. His skits and especially all the songs; with all their double entendres. The sheer amount of material - no wonder they say he was a workaholic. Nowadays there would be a team of writers. And he played almost every musical instrument, and used such a variety of film tricks. I used to love watching him in the 80's. Bought his VHS series when it came out too. Benny Hill will always have a place in my heart with all his ribaldry.
Benny Hill is still hilarious today. I remember watching it as a child and laughing my head off even back then, he was a genius of comedy and understood what made people laugh, I still laugh at him slapping the guys head all the time, very funny, oh and the nagging wife (I can relate)

The way Mr Hill left this world saddens me, not that there is a good way to leave, but for him to bring so much laughter and joy only to be found alone in the end is tough. Just like one of my favourite actors Philip Seymour-Hoffin. A lot of people who see to be the funniest & happiness are often the most unhappy & miserable. It's like a diferrent personality. My friend's dad was one of his best friends and he said he was phobic of flying (why he never came to North America) and he was painfully shy and reclusive. He told us that he had few friends to begin with, but by the end he was completely reclusive, as if he was was getting ready to go. Now I DO know they were friends,, because I saw their written correspondence (my friend's dad was a travel writer for the Globe and Mail) and even got to say hello on a phone call once. We were so excited at the time, because he was the GOAT tin the 80's. He was known as a grumpy old man and when we begged to say 'hello', on the phone call where he acquiesced, he sounded VERY bothered lol The comedy did NOT age well, but at the time, it was a joy to watch. If you grew up in the 80's, you definitely slapped someone on top of the head at least once a week lol

I remember sneaking downstairs at midnight to watch Benny Hill after my parents had gone to bed. My mother would definitely not have allowed me to watch it as a pre-teen. It was just hilarious, although I'm sure the younger generation probably has very different sensibilities now. I loved the old guy that Benny would always slap on the top and back of his head with the sped up camera. 30 years is quite the run. Not many last that long. But its sad to find out how the end of his life turned out.

I found him hilarious, but you can only tell the same joke so many times before it becomes boring. When it was cancelled I never missed it. I wished him well but it was no longer the kind of comedy I found funny.

I recall so many hilarious episodes of Benny Hill. I recall one where Benny is jabbering away in front of a red brick adorned with various graffiti. One in particular caught my eye and has stayed with me ever since. It read, "LOST, MY VIRGINITY. STILL HAVE THE BOX IT CAME IN!" 🤣🤣👍🏼

My grandmother and I watched this together when I was a child and we laughed constantly and she would always call him a dirty old man jokingly. I miss those days.

Much of the Benny Hill Show is in the same category, I've watched repeat episodes and UA-cam skits over and over again. Still laugh out loud at how incredible this genius was, when it came to slap stick, music, double meanings and clever editing.

I really enjoyed watching Benny Hill as much as I enjoyed Monty Python, maybe a bit more. His sketches were so funny and his take on whatever he was poking fun at or parodied was nothing short of hilarious. His show being canceled seemed a little premature but I hoped that a new Benny Hill would come back to TV. Sadly his death came too soon but I am grateful for all the comedic talent and the many episodes that are still there to be enjoyed today.
I was in a dubious London night club. Hill came. Bought us all a drink. The mood really changed. It was the 60s I was young. He was much more confident than this video suggests

Absolutely loved watching the show......as a young boy growing up seeing the stunning girls was awesome. But later watching the shows again you realise just how good this man was at his art and that was making people of both sexes laugh. Each show had so many different very funny angles to them that they needed to be seen more than once to appreciate the effort that Benny must have put in to produce them. The man was a genius and had the rare ability to make everyone laugh with just a raised eyebrow. We won't see his like ever again especially in the woke world we suffer today. RIP Benny.

Another I liked was Up Pompei. Came on Wednesday nights about 10:30. The humour sneaks up and smacks you up side the back of your head, and I would burst out laughing. Dad would come down and turn the TV off and chase me to bed.

I grew up watching Benny. Even to this day we still mimic a few of his skits and we still do the "Benny Salute" when we see eachother. I still watch his reruns whenever I can. He'll forever be missed in my eyes.

I was around 10 thinking it was awesome to be seeing such an adult comedy as Benny Hill in the late 1970s, early 1980s, at a whopping 10:30 PM on a school night. Nothing ever compared to his comedy, and even when it wasn't funny you still kept watching because it was outrageous!
I adored "Art Gallery Munchies" (1980) where he entered into a large painting of a banquet. It was more magic than funny to me, and I loved it.

I remember staying up late nights to wait for my dad when he came from work to watch Benny Hill together. I was at least 4 or 5 years old, my dad didn't mind me watching the show. Sadly, if this show was aired now in 2024 it would get so much heat on it. One my favorite sketch was the one where Benny Hill did the A' Team he played Mr. T and few other characters from the show.

Our whole Family were and still are Benny Hill fans. I will never forget my visit to Thames studios to watch a taping. The sketches recorded that evening were used in a number of episodes in the series. I also got to see some of the people we were also familiar with besides being on his show, such as Henry Mcgee and Bob Todd. During one of the songs Benny did, I remember him looking at me with his cheeky grin, finishing with the line 'And all I had on was my socks!' That was in 1985.

@@generalzod7959 One of the things we saw that evening was the take off of dallas, during scenery changes, we looked up at monitors of previous clips so that we were able to follow the story. No sign of any of Hills Angels though, that had also been recorded earlier. Other scenes on the monitors was the take off of Cagney and Lacey with the 'Forward and Back' goldfish. These were shown also to record live laughter, rather than using 'canned'. And in a couple of clips, I have actually heard myself. A clip done in the studio was the short sighted Benny changing a light bulb with a pear. We saw them do the switch so that it would light up.

I grew up watching The Benny Hill Show. I introduced my kids to Benny Hill. He is one of the greatest comedians of all time!

Benny was indeed a comedy icon of the times. I spent many years watching him. 'Humanity' is so ridiculously fragile these days very few comedians even dare to get close to real humor.
Oh George Carlin, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor and so many more of the greats would cause these thin skinned, brainless, kool-aid-haired dimwits of today to go into a permanent meltdown and they would lock themselves in their little cry closet in mommy's basement forever
Yeah, but unfunny comedians like lily Singh or hanna gatsby have a career somehow. They're really a proof that middle aged women aren't funny, except for gatsby, it's kind of funny that she's woman who try to look like a man but proceeds to look like neither.
YET, with gigantic irony, spewing out the F-word is OK ? and all we hear today.

Coming-of-age in the 80's, seems like people took themselves less seriously, and were less consumed by politics. Recall a popular TV personality such as Johnny Carson; how he transcended politics and united people of many, often very different views and lifestyles.
His show wasn't "CANCELED", as a matter fact Hill was slated to run another two seasons until he found out a bunch of liberal writers and producers were being presurred by sponsors to "tone down" Hill's parody about women and homosexuals(Hill was thought to be homosexual), and he refused to conform.
Thames Productions LTD, offered Hill a "compromise" if he would show fewer skantly clad women in his skits, Hill refused saying "Thats what draws my fan base" and refused the offer.
Thames eventually made an out-of-court settlement, paid Hill an undesclosed sum of money, and that was the end of his show.
Hill would eventually tell a then not so liberal BBC that he had "many offers" to do other shows, but he turned them down.
Of course today he wouldn't stand a chance at broadcasting what he did best, humor and parody.

My Dad got me into Benny Hill. I have great memories of my father and I having great laughs watching the show. RIP Dad. Those were the days.
Benny entertained us a lot in high school here in the US in the 70's. His sophomoric humor as an older guy always kept us laughing. And the Hill's Angels always gave us teenage guys things to think and talk about. It was sad to see the show get cancelled but I get that it just kind of kept doing the same things over and over and probably only appealed to a certain male audience. Thanks for all the chuckles and pretty ladies, Benny. We still talk about you.

I love Benny Hill. I used to watch this every time it was on in LA when I was a kid. Still can’t get enough. The fast filmed chase scenes were the best. I loved when he would pet the small bald guy and they played the slapping noise. I loved all of the Angels!!
I think it's fair to say his brand of comedy was intended to be outrageous and offensive, that's what made it so funny! Comedy today is on life support.

I grew up on Benny Hill. I had a full 6 hour tape of "The Best of Benny Hill" and a few episodes I used to watch on repeat when I was way to young for it and both I and my parents have no regrets. The man was an utter genius and one of my favorite entertainers across all genres ever. An absolute Legend, RIP.
I watched Benny Hill often and never laughed so hard! He is truly missed and beloved. Those were the good ole days! We need more like them.
I am now in my seventies and when I was young my grandparents just loved the Benny Hill show. As a result of visiting them while they were watching his program I became a die hard fan of his humour. He was a site gag genius. Benny and his crew will be missed by many. 🇨🇦

I am glad I watched is as a kid, it was such a good comedy, they made everything related to sex hilarious, nowadays the kids would go omg, these dudes so pervy
He brought laughter to so many people. Sad that his last years were spent the way that they were. He deserved much more, just for the laughter he brought.
