  • When you find ripe, in-season fruit, what do you do?! Get all you can get! If you end up with too much, you freeze it! Blueberries are one of the easiest and quickest fruits to preserve! Just think how happy you'll be using these in smoothies and baked goods!

    ------------------------------
    Here's the process:
Wash the berries and allow them to air dry. Water is an enemy when freezing and will cause crystallization.
Once dry, lay them on a baking sheet in an even layer. Place in freezer until frozen solid, 4-6 hours.
Transfer to airtight containers, label, and freeze. These easily last for up to one year if frozen well... and most times, well beyond that.

When my kids were little I used to put frozen blueberries (or any kind of frozen berries really, but blueberry was the favorite) in the food processor with just enough milk or yogurt to make it creamy and tell them it was ice cream. 🤣 They have figured out my tricks now but still enjoy it for a snack!

I love that you try to avoid single use plastic. And yes there is always something to use blueberries for.

I have always heard NOT to wash the berries before freezing because that makes the skin tough. I pick through them for bad or unripe ones, then pour them right from the container into the freezer container. I wash when I pull them out to use.

I was taught that too, but then my MIL does it this way, and ever since then (30 years ago), I wash, then pack, and freeze.

OK just want to know, after you wash the blueberries what’s your method of drying them? Paper towel, cotton towel, salad spinner?

I use a clean cotton Dish Towel, but anything will work. Time is more important than material =-)

We grew and sold organically. Just bagged them and froze. Best treat? Frozen blueberries with milk poured over. The milk freezes.

What happens if you don't freeze the blueberries on a tray before putting the dry blueberries into an airtight container?

If you pick a berry that isn’t ripe, but has swollen and started to change color, it will ripen by the next day.

My Farmer FIL told me the same thing; they will ripen. Odd that Wyse said they won't.
