I lived in Ely for my first eleven years of life, I remember always seeing lots of trains all grouped together as we drove down that road next to the sidings. I never knew what it was and why there were so many trains there. After my family moved to Lincolnshire I learnt pretty much everything there is to know about British trains over two and a half years, through simulators and my own research. Seeing this has made the realisation hit me like a truck. All that time I lived there, the countless times I saw this place and I never knew what it was. Now I wish I could go back there and see it again with the knowledge I have acquired over the past couple years.

It is sad to see, I remember them being introduced on the Midland Mainline. However, time marches on and 40 years was a decent return on the development and investment. Luckily some will retire into preservation.

I had the chance to travel on the HST (as it was called) before it came into service as I was working for the advertising agency which handled the advertising for Inter-City. We were on the shiny new train on which Minister of Transport Dicky Marsh hosted the american Secretary of State Coleman for a demonstration trip. Needless to say our photographic trip took place well away from the VIPs. I still have in my mind, but only in my mind, a beautiful picture of the clean new Intercity 125, as it came to be known, drawing into the great station at Paddington. Wonderful trains.

Like Woodham’s sidings in Barry back in the day. Oddly though these HSTs are older than some of the retired steam engines were when I saw those pictures in the early 70’s. They’ve done a lot more miles too! Paxman Valenta and MTU replacement-the soundtrack to our lives.

These have mostly been re-engined twice though.
Mostly just the chassis & body work is original, the rest has been replaced over the years, a bit like Trigger’s broom.

What I will always miss is travelling on a HST because it was something that I _had_ to do as part of what I was doing. Travelling on one now would be just for the sake of travelling on one, not because it was an integral part of my life's activities.
I feel that it's the same with classic cars; although you can still drive an old Rover, Triumph, Jaguar etc it will never be quite the same as driving one because you _had_ to and enjoying it.

Typical british weather is a killer when rolling stock in cold storage conditions is left open air exposed to the elements. No matter if brand new or old. Luckily a few class 60s were kept at crewe inside a shed for many years, being the most well kept compared to the majority of stored classmates. Thank you for sharing another interesting video.

I have a feeling Sprinters will be disappearing with little fanfare. I was never a great fan of them, but as one of the last hurrahs for British Rail you have to admire the sterling service they gave.
Ditto the Networkers. The short journey "South London Metro" versions were relatively horrible, but the Ramsgate tarted up versions were quite pleasant. Again another faithful BR legacy.

The 156s were certainly a vast improvement over the cattle-truck 101s and the like, even though they still suffered from quite a lot of engine noise intrusion.
The 158s were far better and I thought and still think that they're good for service for many years to come. Certainly still felt modern the few times I caught them in the last 5 years or so.

Looking at the Wiki article, a lot have been placed in storage or are still in service.
Only a few seem to have been scrapped, so they must still have some intrinsic value.
By the same token, many Class 37s still seem to be doing stirling service, often rescuing these new Stadlers when they die.

The best rail tour locomotives, two at each end , no run around needed! I hope many of these HST power cars get saved . Much better then a loco run around at many UK branch lines , and main lines . The UK’s most successful locomotives the HST power cars. Why not build new HST's with modern technological improvements? Instead we get a plethora of garbage new trains, uncomfortable (class 800's) unreliable (class 180's) and we scrap what is widely regarded as the best train ever seen in the UK. Makes no sense to me.

Beacsue almost every railway network on the planet operates under the premise : New = Best.
HSTs and their designs are considered "old". The thought process is why would a company advertise to the general public that they have trains on an old design when the competitor has "New" trains.
