I have a great solution for numbness while riding. Just stand up on your pedals every once in a while to let blood flow through. That’s what I do and I don’t suffer any numbness.
All you MAMILS out there please listen to the advice in this great video and understand that heart disease can show itself in many many ways. It sneaks up on you and leaves its calling card when you get that gripping pain in your chest. Good job GCN
A flat, firm saddle like a Selle Royal Seta (not expensive) or equivalent, that is appropriately sized to provide correct support to your particular sit-bones. This effectively elevates the perineum out of the fray. Also, a 3-ish degrees nose-down attitude of the saddle keeps the saddle nose a little bit lower and again, out of the equation. Once I discovered this not so obvious solution, all discomfort became a thing of the past. Beyond this, correct crank length is another significant aspect of this situation. A crank that is too long causes over extension of the knee and consequently, exaggerated movement of the hips. I'm 5'10" (178cm) and 170mm cranks are vastly more comfortable for me than the typical 172.5 or 175 that come as standard fitment on frames recommended for my stature.

@@Hunter_Bidens_Crackpipe_ The pattern is well known from regional studies: the western high fat diet. Prostate cancer is a rare disease in countries with better diets.
I've noticed that this happens over long distances, long duration with a single posture. Easiest way out, tilt the seat downwards in front by a bit and it should ease the pressure down there. For MTBs and hybrid cycles it shouldn't be a problem based on their cushioning and shock absorbers.
As a prostate cancer survivor and cyclist, my experience was that my PSA was elevated if I was tested soon after hard riding. It was lower if I was tested after not riding for a couple days. This is a great video, and a topic that men need to take seriously. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to deal with problems if and when they arise.
I have no problems with my Sunlite C9 seat, its the wider type thats made for cruisers and such however I do like it on my mtb for commutes. Its nice because its comfy in any position even while sprinting,I couldn't do that with those skinny bike seats.
Have u tried ISM ADAMO - it's so good i've got three for all my bikes. I've also got pro stealth and Power specialized. ISM adamo is stil the most comfortable on the drops - it's as comfortable as sitting on the couch. Seriously comfortable.
Big Lampar Thanks - I’ve been thinking about a split nose saddle. I’m currently enjoying a Specialized Power saddle but I have to stand or adjust my position from time to time. I notice it’s very comfortable on a long climb and when I’m forward on it.
I'm 27, entered into a cyclist world. Learning one by one from your channel. And I appreciate you guys for teaching the odds and benefits in the cycling. I need to learn a lot 😎.
a big thanks to GCN for addressing an important topic that is rarely discussed. This vid has excellent information. and special thanks to Si for stepping up with that great interview, giving us the real facts on this topic.
I have been cycling for over 30 years. I have been using cut out saddles for probably 20 years.I average 40 -50 miles a week at age 61, so far less than many younger guys. I experience NO numbness whatsoever, I do experience the OPPOSITE of E D. I hope to continue riding as long as I can.
Anyone else recently got into the cycling hobby, found this channel to learn more, and ended up subscribing to it BECAUSE of this video? No? Just me? Okay.
I've been cycling for three years and 8 months straight, I love cycling, keeps my body awake and turns my engine on (my brain, heart, legs, feet and helps my core aka upper body stay in tip-top shape) I just love cardio and cycling.
We need to put an end to men "dying of embarrassment" - I would urge anyone to go and have a check up if they haven't done it recently. It's something I tell all my older cycling customers who are returning to cycling after years of inactivity.
I’m an older guy, 76, keen cyclist, I had embarassing and painful urination problems for thirty years or so, a routine medical showed a worrying PSA level, an MRI showed lesions on the prostate, a painful biopsy showed no cancer. After a year without cycling due to the covid social distancing my urination is back to normal, I sleep eight hours without getting up to go to the toilet. I’m back to cycling now so hopefully with a year of rest and a better saddle it won’t come back.
I changed to the Brooks B17 which I find excellent. My wife uses the lady’s B65 and it is the first saddle that she has never complained about. You can them pre-softened to save the breaking in period. I see my post was two years ago and glad to say the problems have not returned and we have been cycling just about every day.
I had the same problem with a PSA very, very high, biopsie, MRI, etc. Five years ago I had a cycling accident which took me off the bike for that long. My PSA went down to normal this year. I’m starting again to ride my bike and Hope everything will stay normal.
@@Badtimes Mine is still normal so far despite a lot of cycling recently - I think changing to a Brooks saddle may have helped. But PSA is only an indicator, not harmful in itself, so if it increases I wont do anything unless it is really extreme.
Great video. While I am sure a woman focused one would be well received, men on the whole are generally quite bad at acknowledging problems, seeking help etc, so getting education out there is very welcome. Another thing is no matter how embarrassing you thing something is, it's totally routine for a doctor and they have seen it a million times before
Excellent video. When I first started riding I also had a numbness issue that lasted just over a month. Needless to say it was rather disconcerting. The problem was not the bicycle but rather my tendency to slide forward on the saddle. I've since been much more conscious of maintaining a proper seating position.
I'm not adding anything new, but I'm hoping that leaving fresh comments will help youtube algorithms make this video more popular and visible, as it is so, so important and really well done. Thank you for tackling such a delicate and serious topic! Even though personally I'm an owner of a different plumbing system, here's to hoping it will help more men stay safe and healthy.
Im with the last guy, keep it in the algorithm! Perfect Ballance of accurate health promotion info, humorous presentation and humanity. Well done all and kudos to Si for lack of shame or embarrassment.
Get a saddle with a deep groove in the middle, really helps with keeping the greatest pressure away from the sensitive areas and rather on the sit bones.
This is a very helpful and informative upload. I'm 65 and 3 years ago diagnosed with a trace of what appears to be a benign prostate cancer, it hasn't advanced and my PSA levels are fine. Up until 10 years ago I cycled quite a lot. Now I've just ordered a new bike as I miss cycling and want to get fit again, so the reassurances given in the video are great news. I think I will however invest in a Brooks saddle, which should afford greater comfort and minimise any potential irritation.
I had to stop road cycling because of this as I used to have it really bad. THe feeling came back after terrible pins and needles down there which wasn't pleasant... Started to happen everytime I cycled for long distances and nothing would stop it no matter what I changed or tried.
At the age of 64,I still using my mtb, every week end and I travelled with my bike around 80 kilometers.I feel numbness and my solution in it is to change my positioning over my bike
I use the ISM Touring saddle (the noseless type) and my perineum pain, numbness and discomfort is gone forever. I just wish that all cyclist would use it.
Cycling bad for men's health, no. I'm an Ironman and have just bought a saddle with a central cut out for that reason, the numbness. The pressure on the perineum was the cause. The saddle has worked a treat.
SAF1981 could you let us know the exact model of your new saddle. I’m trying my 5th one, paid a professional fit, all that. It has a cut in the middle... but no luck so far
Marcelo Thys I have this saddle The Selle Italia SLR Titanium Rail Saddle superflow. It is pricy but well reviewed and very comfortable. Has eliminated all soreness and numbness. I think Evans Cycles are the cheapest for it at the minute. You also don't have to have titanium rails etc so other models are cheaper
@@brazilianpianist In a good Bike Shop you should ne able to borrow some testsaddles and take a few rides before deciding which is best for you. Everyone is unique so there is no perfect saddle for everyone it depends on the width of your seatbones, how 'racey' your Position is on the bike, what framegeometry, your weight, your feel and of course - if you have a big or small ass :) good luck with finding a proper saddle
Im an IM Triathlete and had the same thing. I switched to an Adamo Breakaway (now called Adamo PL 1.0 ) on my Tri bike Had it for few years now and not experienced the same numbness. 2 Long course races with it plus all the training. So I recommend at least trying it to see if it can help
Thanks everyone for the input. Yes, I’ve done my fit on Cycle Neron, the fitter is very knowledgeable and is working hard to get it right. They allow me to test the saddles for a while, I’m now on my 5th one, which looks the most promising one. A bit uncomfortable but no numbness in shorter rides. I’m yet to test on more aggressive rides, which usually is what triggers it. The saddle is the Pro Saddle Stealth. I’m gonna look into the pro Itália one you mentioned to compare.
Top video and information GCN. So many men out there don't get checked. This type of detail might have just triggered someone to get checked, maybe saving a life or two.
I haven't ridden a bike for years, but this showed up in my recommendations. Got to commend anyone who is proactive about men's health, very well presented information.
Been ridding diamond frames non stop for 50 years + and later with very good seats and then started riding recumbents (and noseless seat for my fold up upright that I use occasionally). Not only does ridding recumbents help the issues discussed but lots of others like sore neck, hands, shoulders. You do a long ride and you are just tired no sore or numb bits anywhere.......
I'm 53, went to the doctor about my aching back (which turned out to be due to 2 compressed discs) but as a precaution had my prostate checked then scanned. When they saw the results which were ok they noticed a lump on a kidney which turned out to be cancer, I've had the tumour removed and things look good. I hate to think of the consequences if I hadn't had the checks done. I share this info to help others and the checks are nothing to be scared of.
When I saw this title my initial reaction was "Bro! Don't deter me from starting up cycling. This is scary lol!" Luckily this hasn't deterred me at all, but still.....you know how much us guys care about our prized jewels.
Don't put lots of pressure on it for too long. If it gets numb, do something to give it circulation. Same goes for any other part of the body. I thought everyone knew that.
Honestly... I clicked the video for information and UA-cam knew that I am a beginner in cycling so it recommended it. However their accents took over the information....😁 Nice work by the way.
It took a while to get the research and results together for this video and we're definitely looking at doing the same research/video for women's sexual health in the future.
I've had the numbness to the point that I was afraid of drops of pee, and not knowing if I was possibly leaking. Other than saddles, you can try different angles, standing up occasionally, and rest stops. Of course age is a factor as well. I am 55, so I am probably more likely than a 20 year old to run into this issue on a long ride.
REALLY REALLY good way to raise the prostate cancer awareness and also how important is a healthy life to prevent other diseases. Congratulations for the good job
Obviously, the STANDARD bike saddle is largely to blame for NUMBNESS, because of its nose. Therefore, consider the NOSELESS bike seat - like the Spongy Wonder! Works great for me. No numbness, like I used to have.
I want to warn people. I had numbness but you can treat it by riding actively and going out of the saddle. This numbness caused by stopping the bloodflow is quite easy to be aware of. Much more than the loss of sensation when you damage the nerves. I didn’t notice the loss of sensation on the skin all around the testicles until after a summer of cycling. Now it seems it’s a permanent damage. It‘s been many weeks and I feel almost nothing.
I had a similar thing happen to my thumb after an afternoon at a driving range. No instruction on how to properly hold a golf club (basically I was gripping too tight) and I ended up with numbness down one side of my right thumb that lasted for several months. This happened 15 years ago and no problems since - though don't let that stop you getting yourself checked out!
Christobal, how many hours on average daily or weekly did you train? I have seen another video where they link time of biking to nerve damage, I had that too, then I stopped for a while and everything seems to be in order right now.
David De León I trained only for about 7 hours per week. 3,5 x 2. I believe my problem is the saddle but no shape has helped yet because eventually you have to sit on something. ;-)
@@christobal747 the article I read postulated that the damage can (theoretically) begin by more than 3 hours/week....I know that is not much of a training but....even though. ..

The pattern is well known from regional studies: the western high fat diet.
Haven’t even reached 1 minute in and I already like this fella
Thank you GCN! I was worried cause I use vintage bike to commute to work. But now I worry no more. Love from Nigeria
yes
This is what i have been waiting for years! These simple but practical videos and exciting content help to bring GCN to a new level. Love you guys
I’ve fought numbness on many different saddles and I mitigate it by standing for 15-30 seconds every 20 minutes or so. It works.
Patrick, I found saddles with. Proper channel really helped, e.g. Selle smp
I notice it’s very comfortable on a long climb and when I’m forward on it.
believe it or not, I have the least problems with this when I am wearing minimally padded shorts in concert with the specialized taupe saddle.

Thanks Ted, glad you enjoyed it

I have been cycling for over 30 years. I have been using cut out saddles for probably 20 years.I average 40 -50 miles a week at age 61, so far less than many younger guys. I experience NO numbness whatsoever, I do experience the OPPOSITE of E D. I hope to continue riding as long as I can.
Why in the world would anyone give this a thumbs down. People crazy This is very informative and a well done video thank you for this.

What this video is about is cycling is good or bad
I'm weak in hearing eng convo
I’m back to cycling now so hopefully with a year of rest and a better saddle it won’t come back.
do have suggestion about saddle?
I changed to the Brooks B17 which I find excellent. My wife uses the lady’s B65 and it is the first saddle that she has never complained about. You can them pre-softened to save the breaking in period.
I see my post was two years ago and glad to say the problems have not returned and we have been cycling just about every day.
I hope to be as active as you when I’m 76!
Another thing is no matter how embarrassing you thing something is, it's totally routine for a doctor and they have seen it a million times before
The shape of the saddle is also important! Try different ones & find the most comfortable TO YOU
This actually helped me clear my doubts.
What the heck. Man I just bought my bike now you show me this
HAHA EXACTLY

Don't cycle too much.
Don't sit when u cycle and you should be fine 😂

Finally someone decided to discuss some of the most concerning health issues, Well Done GCN
I don't know why the saddle has to be so narrow. I changed to a wider and more comfortable one and no problems

Get a saddle with a deep groove in the middle, really helps with keeping the greatest pressure away from the sensitive areas and rather on the sit bones.
Just bought cycle at age of 22 for saving the environment.
Good man!
Krishna Suryawanshi same here
same here im 22 right now, graduating student and likely to go bike to work in the future where cycling is not norm here.
sorry to break it to you, but you did nothing for saving the enviroment.
Woohoo me too. Riding for a year now. We are making a difference. Even if people think it is nothing.
Started to happen everytime I cycled for long distances and nothing would stop it no matter what I changed or tried.
sensible, adult, matter of fact discussion about everyday male cycling issues. Well done and thank you
At the age of 64,I still using my mtb, every week end and I travelled with my bike around 80 kilometers.I feel numbness and my solution in it is to change my positioning over my bike
A bit personal question, but do men get erection at that age ?
I use the ISM Touring saddle (the noseless type) and my perineum pain, numbness and discomfort is gone forever. I just wish that all cyclist would use it.
Thanks will check it out
Thank you GCN for making this video. I’ve been concerned about this for a while. Mad respect to Si for being so open
1:16 lol Love that he had to say "not necessarily to scale"
I have never clicked a YT video with such panic and worry
Great to see GCN tackling all the hard (or not so hard) issues concerning cycling
😂
That's amazing news, thank you i though my cycling career was over because of my prostate problems. I love GCN from Canada 🇨🇦
Top video and information GCN. So many men out there don't get checked. This type of detail might have just triggered someone to get checked, maybe saving a life or two.
Thanks Cam, hopefully that's the case
Thanks for you sharing
...hope your health is a-ok!
Similar thing happened to my brother, and he had Basal Cell Carcinoma in one of his kidneys. Had the tumor cut out, and he was good to go.
When I saw this title my initial reaction was "Bro! Don't deter me from starting up cycling. This is scary lol!" Luckily this hasn't deterred me at all, but still.....you know how much us guys care about our prized jewels.
Really well done GCN, you should be proud of yourselves. Public Service Broadcasting on UA-cam. Chapeau!
Well done guys for being so open, well done

Don't put lots of pressure on it for too long. If it gets numb, do something to give it circulation. Same goes for any other part of the body. I thought everyone knew that.
@plnkfloydian Are you sure you weren't staring at the girl in front of you? 😏
Honestly... I clicked the video for information and UA-cam knew that I am a beginner in cycling so it recommended it.
However their accents took over the information....😁
Nice work by the way.
Will Emma do a similar video for women or is there less effects for them?
It took a while to get the research and results together for this video and we're definitely looking at doing the same research/video for women's sexual health in the future.
It would be great if Emma could do a video on it...Cause we woman cyclists face a lot if issues as well🙃

Great video GCN more like this with relation to injury prevention and health benefits. Well done for blowing a few myths away.
God are they ugly though... I bought a Fizik open saddle. Fixed all my problem.
Thanks for a very informative candid video. Men’s health should be discussed openly more often like this.

Your welcome Des, glad you liked it
I've been wanting to get into cycling and thank God I've found this video
Thank you for this video. It covers the most talked about topics on cycling and clears the wrong perceptions.
Jonathan Bailey Yes I did. Nothing can be done. Now I am just waiting and thinking if and how I can ride again (saddle, more bikefitting etc.)
Christobal, how many hours on average daily or weekly did you train? I have seen another video where they link time of biking to nerve damage, I had that too, then I stopped for a while and everything seems to be in order right now.
David De León I trained only for about 7 hours per week. 3,5 x 2. I believe my problem is the saddle but no shape has helped yet because eventually you have to sit on something. ;-)
@@christobal747 the article I read postulated that the damage can (theoretically) begin by more than 3 hours/week....I know that is not much of a training but....even though. ..
Adjust the saddle by angling it downward so that the is less pressure to the front where it matters.
