    This drone is faster than an F1 car.
    Red Bull recently raced a Formula 1 car against a drone - and it wasn’t just in a straight line, it was around the Silverstone circuit - one of the fastest tracks, with the fastest corners on F1’s calendar.
    It’s a circuit where Formula 1 cars are very much at home, a track where they’re 42 seconds a lap faster than a McLaren Senna.
    But, in this race, the drone was WAY faster.

    The distance isn't a factor in the delay. It takes 3us for light (which includes radio waves) to travel 1km. The signal could make the trip 10,000 times in 30ms. It's the onboard video processing, the network stack on the drone, the relay, and the client, and the client side video processing that take 30ms.

    • @WillArtie
      @WillArtie Місяць тому

      @aerialbugsmasher oh right - thanks man. So this drones configuration really is probably the fastest and most manoeuvrable vehicle you could want for the job of keeping up with an F1 car around a track.
      When they were saying a team of people is used to operate it properly, I was thinking they were going to say one person controls the camera - but they didn't mention anything. Do you think it's fixed or has some auto tracking thing going on?

    • @aerialbugsmasher
      @aerialbugsmasher Місяць тому +2

      @@WillArtie From what I've seen only drones attempting to break speed records look like this.
      The camera appears to be fixed, when they show the internals there's no gimbals or anything like that and if you look at the shell there's not much room for adjustment. It's really not needed as they know the angle at which the drone will fly so it's pretty trivial to find the optimal camera angle especially with a wide angle lens. It shouldn't vary much at speed. If you notice when it goes faster you see less of the horizon (it pitches down), when it's slower, you see more. A gimbal would add weight and complexity.
      I think they're being overly dramatic with the whole team thing. The pilot is seeing the same thing as the film camera (albeit at lower resolution) there's really no need for a separate operator. I didn't see them get into specifics but from what I saw in the actual red bull video they are just there acting as support and coordination with the car and looking at telemetry and signal strength and monitoring the base station. From my experience that would be the trickiest part keeping a solid FPV feed for the pilot to be able to see the video signal well enough all throughout the track.

The struts connecting the propellers to the body don't seem to have a wing profile, so no lift their either. Do they alternate the speeds of the top and bottom propellers, similar to the way that they turn corners, to move it continually up and down? If so, does it bounce like a Mercedes?

    I feel like it would have exceptional braking and turning capabilities with very little weight/power penalty if it had active grid fins along the body to control/direct air flow with a control strategy primarily using feedback from all of the flight attitude systems (gyro/pitch/yaw/etc) as well as pilot inputs. The amount of control it would have at both low and high speeds would more than make up for the additional weight and power consumption and would also all but eliminate the need to use a motor control strategy to steer/stabilize the drone during horizontal flight.

    All these racing drones are kind of a challenge. What most people don't understand is how different this is to fly than a regular "camera drone". 100% manual control, you have to build and TUNE it, and then race it! Only to crash, rebuild and try again.The tuning alone is a pretty hard process to understand for anybody not familliar with PID algorythms. I've been in this hobby since 2016, and even though i have it on pause for the last 3 years, this video made me so happy because I know how hard this was to achieve!

    I was expecting a more exotic energy source like maybe some kind of non-rechargeable battery featuring better density or a tiny turbine and fuel. But I guess if you go the combustion route what you actually end up making is more akin to rockets used by the military and before you know it, you're in the weapons business... Then again, normal FPV drones themselves are roughly a roll of duct tape away from being weapons themselves.

    Okay so granted I know very very little about drone engineering. But I do know a fair bit about bullet physics.
    An idea for a V4. If they had all the internals mounted in a gyro, and then had the body rotate similar to rifling they'd achieve much greater stability. They could also overcome now the complex algorithm needed for turning such a machine by mounting an additional set of blades towards the front which are fixed to the same plane as the internals which handled the steering.
    Again I'm not a drone expert but we already know how to make incredibly stable projectiles and surely we could look towards that for inspiration.

    • @Dorench
      @Dorench Місяць тому

      Hell, if they possess the skills to programme such a thing you could mount the rear blades responsible for rotating the rig to a clutch system, then you could rotate the rear blades along to directional axis which would increase / decrease the rate at which the body spins. So you can then change which way the body spins dependent on a clockwise or counterclockwise circuit. Aiding corning to most turn and the ability to slow the rotating inertial to aid with the opposing turns.
      Hell guys if you're looking to hire I'm available and not always free 😂

    • @sea_kerman
      @sea_kerman Місяць тому

      @@Dorench the issue with your reasoning is that algorithms and processing is cheap and mechanical complexity is expensive. That's the difference between a helicopter and a quadcopter, all the mechanical complexity and stability of the rotor head is moved into software, and you get a flying machine with 4 moving parts total. Betaflight can keep that thing stable just as well as gyroscopic stability could, and then instantly make it *un*stable again in order to turn, which your idea can't do.

But the basic idea is just to fold out something that creates drag. Think of it as reverse drs. But i'me not sure if that would work fast enough. Is there a reason you can't just spin the blades in reverse?

    Once you learn in Phsyics class that Ek = 1/2 * m * v * v (Ek: Kinetic energy, m: mass, v: velocity) and heard on your favorite Physics-related UA-cam channel something about drag cross sectional area projected in the direction of motion something something, these comparisons between the movement performance of a little and light thing compared to a thing that is orders of magnitude heavier and larger start to appear to be just clownish.
    Now, if you were to find a way to bend Physics and accelerate the F1 car in the same manner as it does while only investing as much/little energy as is needed for that teeny-weeny drone, now that would make me gasp in wonder...

    to be honest, all those plane against race car races have always had a big flaw. track limits. Those drones say they take the corner, but always go way off the track (i mean who cares right?). but if they really were to confined to the same boundaries they would be a lot slower. Again, if an F1 car could ignore track limits as well, it could go much quicker too
