No Bleach & No Ladders! Clean Mold off Bathroom Ceilings and Walls (Use Safety Glasses!)

- Whilst microfiber mops are highly absorbent, it is recommended that you WEAR SAFETY GLASSES or EYE PROTECTION when cleaning your ceilings.
Bathrooms have high humidity and water and steam, and so they are the perfect spot for mold and mildew to grow. In this video I show you the difference between mold and mildew plus demonstrate how to clean it off, from a bathroom ceiling and bathroom walls, with good old vinegar and a flat mop.
I will also explain why you should not use bleach. All bleach does, is take the color out of the mold spores. It does not really kill the mold spores. That's why it tends to grow back so quickly when you clean mold with bleach. The scary part is, that the microscopic mold spores might be growing deep into your walls and literally eating them and destroying them. Mold is usually caused by walls or ceiling getting wet. If your mold issue is bad, or extensive, you really need a professional to deal with it. A professional that has all the right personal protective equipment and all the right equipment and products and knowledge!
Mildew is different. Mildew is more of a surface issue and is usually found in damp rooms. It is a lot easier to remove mildew, due to it being a surface issue. In any case, mildew and mold are easily removed with vinegar, if you attend to the issue early.

Indeed! Hope it settled quick enough. I Included that advice in the title of that video and in the description, many years ago. I always wear glasses and sometimes forget to remind people about that, as my videos are unscripted. You also get less drips as you become more ex with the flat mop. I grew up and spent many weekends at my grandparents home as a boy and have the vivid memory of smelling vinegar as my Grandma would clean throughout the small home. She knew what worked well.

I was about to use bleach until I watched this video. The vinegar worked a treat!
I remember years ago moving into a place that had an extremely mouldy bathroom. I repainted it with mould resistant additive in the paint and that mould never came back. So I might consider that if the mould starts coming back again. But thanks for the great video (even though you didn't move your lips). 😜😄

Bleach DOES kill mold but because it evaporates so quickly it doesn’t have time to penetrate deeper into the material to kill the deepest layer Thats why it returns. If you dilute it with water it won’t dry as quickly and can penetrate. But you must also wear a respirator to protect your lungs.
Yes and bleach does come in different strengths too. However, I believe that mold usually grows back because the conditions remain the same ie humid with poor airflow. For example, we ended up changing the door on that particular bathroom to a sliding door, allowing us to leave the door open more often. That has helped immensely.
Great tips! Years ago I used bleach to get rid of mold because that was the prevailing advise for getting rid of mold. I didn't know it actually released the spores😮 Years later I found out about vinegar. I understand that steam cleaners also get rid of mold. I am about to purchase one to use throughout my whole house. I like the idea of spraying with essential oils after cleaning to help keep the mold from growing.
Thanks Tammy. Bleach became the popular go-to for so much cleaning and that's such a shame, due to the health issues associated with it. Vinegar and essential oils work so well. I actually have another video, where I sprayed on clove oil first, then washed with the vinegar. That was also very effective and smelt great. Yes I'm the same. Wish I hadn't used all that bleach for so many years and ruined so many clothes and bath mats doing it!... So many people still use bleach, so we have to keep spreading the word. Also I redid this job just the other day and this time I used citric acid and washing soda... cheaper than vinegar (and no plastic bottles to dispose of) and works just the same. @Simple_and_natural I actually used 100% normal white (cooking) vinegar as I was confident that it wasn't going to stain my ceiling or walls. If you are unsure, test in an inconspicuous area or start off with half vinegar and half water. Dint use the "cleaning vinegar" as that is stronger and darker. All the best 👍

I will try vinegar on my next wall/ceiling cleaning job. You are correct in stating that bleach will eat through Tile Grout, worst case I ever saw was when a lovely lady client noticed that the tile grout had disappeared on her bathroom floor. She called me in to retile the floor. During our discussion, she told me she had used bleach to clean the floor once a week for the past two years. I recommended a very good tiler in our area and suggested she investigate other methods of cleaning her tiles.

I've been doing a bit of research myself to clean in my laundry , and I've got to do all the ceilings in the house....I already have a mop like that with an extendable handle . Nice going.....I'm ready to tackle this job after watching your video. Thanks.....as I had wondered whether or not to add hot water but I'll try it your way first.....thinking by adding water will add to the problem since that's how it got there to begin with. I've been spraying mould off over a couple of days and ventilating the room all day and into the night . It's nearly gone .
Hi Debbie. I didn't water it down as I wanted the vinegar to really penetrate and kill those mold spores. I do water vinegar down though, if it is more of a mild problem, like mildew. I made that video in real time, to show you that once you have everything you need for the job, you can get it done fairly quickly. But go slow, to get used to using the mop like that and always have one hand at then end of the pole, so you don't bang in to anything. If you go to my channel, I have a very recent vid that discusses the issues that cause the mold to grow and in that vid I also used clove oil. Thank you. 👍 That is totally true. Vinegar is a natural acid and can still have the damaging qualities of any acid based cleaner. I use it all very minimally and as a treatment only and am quite happy with the results. Thank you for your comment as it is a good reminder for anyone reading. 😊

@@TayGotEmHatin You could use a hardware clamp or stationery fold-back clip, of tie a not in it if your cloth is long enough--or even use a rubber band. All the best.

@Taiwo Omotosho Hi Taiwo. No I did not throw these away. They have a removeable microfiber pad that I simply remove and wash. I have several of the pads, so if one gets too dirty and I can interchange it and keep cleaning, then wash them all together at the end.
I have textured ceiling as well and I just used a rag soaked in vinegar and ladder to get it in there. If you have popcorn ceiling that would be difficult though
@@tinaowens4665 Textured ceilings are an extra challenge, for sure, and I am thankful I don't have them in my house. Just got to be so careful with ladders as they are the base of many injuries..ie overextending

Thank you for watching. I did a bit of research before making that video to ensure I was clear on the differences myself. I agree re the vinegar, as it is naturally acidic, but works much better than bleach in my opinion, cause bleach is just like taking the colour out of the mould excrement.
You should install a switch that when the bathroom light is in, it also turns the fan on at the same time. Or another good Option is a switch for the fan that has a timer.
That's a good idea. You sound like an electrician lol. My 4 sons do leave the fan on after showers but then they also leave wet towels on the floor!! ... they are getting better...slowly, but the window is rather small for that bathroom. I only clean the mould off once or twice a year, so not too bad a job.
@Taiwo Omotosho It does have a humidifer in the bathroom but perhaps I do need another one or a better one. It would be ok if my sons did not leave wet towels on the floor, like they do, daily! They just don't get it!! Thankfully I literally just did this job yesterday and that was the first time since I made this vid...so about 8 months ago. @@tr33m00nk Indeed! As it has grown back a couple of times now, I have gotten them to do it and yes they've gotten better. We will also be getting a barn door installed very soon, and that will definitely help the airflow, as we'll be able to leave it slightly open at times. I'm also going to get the heat lamp removed soon - problem should then be solved, I'm hoping. To be continued....lol

You can add some tea tree oil to the mix. Can't wait to do this today.
Indeed! The tea tree oil would be lovely and also has anti-fungal properties. Happy cleaning and hope it goes well. I have another more recent vid, called Kill and Remove Mold where I sprayed on clove oil first, then wipe everything away with the vinegar. That also worked very well and seemed to deter the growth. Alternatively the clove oil or tea tree oil could be added direct to the vinegar. 😍

Does the pure vinegar remove paint? My walls in my apt are white and thats my worst fear. Also do you use distilled vinegar or regular white vinegar about how much do you use? My walls are barely starting to show so I want to take care of it now. Do I need to rinse the vinegar off or just dry it with the dry cloth...or do I had water to it before drying?
Thanks Paola. I have never noticed that pure vinegar has removed paint. I, personally have painted my house internally and externally and so I am very precious about my walls and ceilings too. If you are worried, try a test patch in an inconspicuous area. If your mold issue is not too bad, maybe just use a diluted vinegar first 50% vinegar and 50% water. Yours might just more be mildew, as opposed to mold. Certainly agree that it's best to deal with the issue early. I use, straight, undiluted plain white, cooking-grade vinegar and did not rinse anything in this particular video, as the mould was getting bad in parts (I do not use this bathroom and did not notice)...I wanted the vinegar to really sink in. (Cooking-grade vinegar is made with more natural processes.) I did put a lot of info in that video and did a bit of research first. As I said in the video, the smell does go away in about 20 mins but I gave some suggestions if you don't like the smell, for other natural mold-inhibitors that you could add. I saw you dipped the mop back into the bucket of vinegar after you clean the ceiling. Would that ruin or degrade the vinegar? How many minutes do we wait to take shower after we cleaned the mold?
Hi Alex. It possibly does degrade the quality of the vinegar a little bit. I sometimes edit out the bits where I rinse the microfibre mop head in the sink, then re-dip it in the vinegar. The vinegar smell lasted about an hour, but I would use the bathroom any time from about half an hour after cleaning it with vinegar and having windows open.. at least it's not so toxic like bleach
What about adding a little clove oil. A lot of info I’m finding suggests that as a spore killer.

I’d heard about problems with bleach so thanks for explaining. Same scenario as you, but window, door is left open and fan on. I suspect the ceiling is painted with standard ceiling paint (rental) and needs appropriate paint. Do you know about this?
Hi there Ti. I'm not sure how much of a difference the paint makes. I've painted our home in so many rooms but never used the specific mould-resistent bathroom type paint. I believe that the ventilation is the all important...In that bathroom, I decided that the best option was to change the door to a sliding door, that could actually be left open for a while after use. We changed the door about 4 months ago and problem has disappeared. Totally worth the expense.

Thank you for watching. I usually use a natural multi purpose spray on my tiles and on the window sil, but often need to use cream cleanser (jif) for the areas that are extra dirty, and also for in the grout, where staining has occurred. I have other bathroom cleaning videos about grout etc.
@Taiwo Omotosho All I used was white vinegar, like you would use for cooking. ...but only the white vinegar, so it does not leave any discolouration---test it in an inconspicuous spot, if you are worried.
This might be a dumb question but do you rinse the walls and ceiling with water and then use a fan to dry when your done? I’ve seen a few articles about that. I didn’t know if the acidity in the vinegar would peel the paint.

Hi Indiana. Not a silly question at all. I have had to do this a few times now, and did rinse the walls the first time just with fresh mop head and water. The last couple of times I have not. I just let it air dry and leave the vinegar to penetrate. So far I've not noticed any degradation of the paint and the vinegar smell disappeared after about half an hour or so. I just ventilate the bathroom well, afterwards by keeping the door open.... we are also getting a sliding door out in, which will mean we will be able to leave the door a bit open and that will improve the ventilation in general... LESS mould will grow, I hope. The Vileda Flip Flat mop is extremely useful and I have many videos using the mop to clean many areas in our house. I'd suggest you buy an extra microfibre head at the same time, as it's good to have a fresh one to swap over when you have those big cleaning days... then I throw them in washing machine. I also have a newer vid that uses clove oil as well as vinegar (to kill the mold) and I discuss why this bathroom gets mold in the ceiling but our other bathrooms do not. It might be useful to you. Hi there. Thank you 😊 I personally do not dilute the vinegar as I'm confident there will be no issues with the surface of my ceiling. I do roll/squeeze the extra vinegar out of the microfibre head though, to avoid drips (but I do leave it fairly wet) Remember to then increase the ventilation, to avoid it coming back, quickly

How long should white vinegar be left on the walls before you start to scrub it?
I just wiped the vinegar on and kept wiping over the spots several times.. no scrubbing as such but repeated wiping. That process took about 10-15 minutes of real time cleaning for that bathroom ceiling. I then left it to air for about 30-60 minutes and the vinegar smells disappeared

Thank you Diana. 😍 The mold does grow back because we don't have good airflow in this particular bathroom. This week, in fact, we are getting the door replaced with a sliding door in order to allow us to leave the door open a bit, which should help a lot. I do have another rather recent vid where I used clove oil to also kill the mold spores and then the vinegar. (Kill and Remove Mold) In that vid I talk about specific conditions that allow mold to grow. That might give you some ideas. I did think the clove oil worked very well with the vinegar to deter the growth, as it really slowed things down. All the best and thank you for watching.

In my opinion it will deter it from growing back but this depends on the ventilation in your bathroom. The better the air flow, the longer it will take for the mold to grow back. I think I made that video about 6 months ago, and I haven't had to redo mine yet. Redo it the moment you see the mold star to grow back. You might need to do it a couple of times but then the regrowth should slow. All the best and thank you for watching.

Would this work for getting fly poop off ceilings?
For sure, but you wouldn't need to use vinegar for fly poop. Just use dishwashing liquid and warm water, plus the flat mop and it should come off quite easily. Good luck and thank you for watching.
Hi Lisa. You have a great channel. I have been using bleach and bleach sprays for my mould issues and it has gotten pretty out of hand now. I initially had a huge problem on my walls, but now that is on my ceiling. I’ve bought a flat mop and will tackle the issue tomorrow with vinegar. Would you suggest I do the walls as well as it must be still existing on the walls for it to have travelled up to the ceiling? Thanks so much :)

I also have another vid where I sprayed with clove oil first then washed with flat mop and vinegar, for extra mold deterrent. Remember that even with this method, the mold will grow back if ventilation and dampness continues to be an issue. It is, though, quick and easy to remove with this method... Eg in the bathroom in this vid we ended up changing the door to a sliding door, so we could leave it a bit open, to increase airflow. All the very best for your cleaning.

What type of vinegar should i use for my bedroom walls? There is black and green color mould all 4 walls of my room and it smells like piss now. Please reply back quickly! It would be really helpful
Oh dear. That sounds really bad. Try just using the plain white cooking vinegar. (That's the only type I use) Check your wall surfaces will be ok with using it by trialling it, in an inconspicuous place first... Not to be used on wallpaper. Or you might use half strength white vinegar plus water. Given it is so bad, you might be better off hiring a professional in mold removal as it is dangerous for your health. Remember you will need to increase ventilation.... open windows etc otherwise the mold will quickly grow back.
can you follow this method regardless of the paint type on the walls?
Hi James. Great question. I'm definitely no paint expert but I've done a lot of painting in my own home (internally and externally). It is common for people to spray strong bleach products on many painted surfaces. Vinegar is also acidic, like bleach, but doesn't seem as harsh. If you're concerned, perhaps don't use it straight, like I did.... Maybe water it down a bit. And only use cooking grade white vinegar as the darker coloured vinegars can have the potential to stain. I know your video is old but in my apartment, I tried your method and it works. But majority didn’t come off and I’m guessing cause it build up and it never been clean by the previous tenants, is there a way to get the harder parts off?
You can try repeating the vinegar.. you might need to try a couple of times, letting it dry and soak in, between each occasion. It sounds like the mold issue might be deeper into the wood. I'd repeat with the vinegar and see what happens. Bleach might make it look better but does not mean the the problem has gone.

Hi Isa. I just looked up Kiltz paint and I don't see why not. It said you have to kill the mold first and then the paint deters future mould growth. I have done a lot of painting in my house and I would leave a bit of time between treating it with the vinegar and then painting it, ie, half a day or more to allow it to really have its effect of killing the mold spores and totally dry out. Also I've have just put out another vid where I first sprayed the bathroom with clove oil (and water) then cleaned it all off with the vinegar, as an extra mould deterrent boost. Yes, definitely, as a professional will have all the right gear to reach safely. Too many people hurt themselves seriously from trying to reach and clean from a ladder. Once the immediate problem has been dealt with, then I suggest you try to find the cause eg where is the moisture coming from and/or how to increase the ventilation... in fact a professional mold person would probably give you suggestions regarding this. Eg in the bathroom where I made that video, we have now replaced the door with a sliding one, that can be left ajar, so that the ventilation is improved.

Some smoke stains on ceiling. Do I dry clean the ceiling first with a flat mop to clean as much of the stains, then wet the mop with vinegar/water for a second.
Hi Sai. I don't have much experience with smoke stains but I would first use the flat mop, (wet) with water and detergent to clean first. Yes, then soak the mop with the vinegar as the vinegar should help remove some nicotine smells. You may need to do this several times as stains build in layers and often takes several attempts. I just tried this, and am hopeful it will work. Does anyone know if there are suppose to be instant results, or will it take a bit for the vinegar to kill the mold?
Our bathroom got pretty bad, and so far I am not seeing results. But I'm hoping it will work after leaving it to sit or maybe doing another clean.
Most of my mold wiped away fairly easily, except for one spot where it was deeper in, and had a mold stain. This was generally where it got most wet,more often. Repeated treatments does help to reduce the stain, but depends how long it has been there. You might need to use a little bleach to take the stain out, but keep up the vinegar mold treatments and be sure to increase the ventilation in the room (otherwise it will grow back fairly quickly). You don't have to wash it back off with water? Do you just leave the vinegar on it?
I just let the vinegar soak in, in order to kill off any mould spores. It dries and then the smell disappears within about 30 mins... I sometimes do a rinse over with water, but usually not. Do a rinse 9 over, though, if you are unsure about the ceiling surface. My surface is glossy and quite new, and was fine.

Just wondering what mop do you recommend ?
For the last few years, I mostly use that same Vileda Flip Flat mop. I bought a few other additional/spare microfibre heads for it and they have served me much better. It's been a good mop. Strong and useful for so many things, first head just had some Velcro issues but others have been great. I even have videos of me cleaning showers and cars etc with that mop. Thank you for watching.

I need to save money for a big deposit. I hate that my apartment seems to easily get mold. I have been spraying my bathroom over the past two days with vinegar. Later, I then used boiling water.
Hi Basil. Are you also using a damp, flat mop to remove it all? Also try improving the ventilation. Mold needs specific conditions to grow and flourish. I have a very recent video where I discuss these conditions and also used clove oil as well as the vinegar. I think it worked well but until the ventilation is improved and the dampness controlled, it will continue to grow back...hopefully more slowly. Mold in the house is a distressing problem and also bad for our health. I hope you can get rid of it plus improve the ventilation, some how. Good luck with saving money!

I ordered an industrial mop and will start mopping. But I've read you should spray with vinegar and leave it on for two hours? I have ordered tea tree oil. I'll mix that with the vinegar. What do you suggest in terms of mopping? How do I use the mop effectively? I may order an essential oil diffuser also for my wardrobe room. I used some tea tree oil kind of past to wipe the window area. It went back to mostly white.
@@QUINTUSMAXIMUS You are totally going to get there! Takes a bit of consistency but sounds like you've got this. I've got heaps of vids that use a flat mop to clean so many difficult spots. Just make sure one hand is always on the end of the handle so that you never bang into anything. Also it takes a bit of practice so be careful and go slow. Also put down Drop sheets, where required. I have tried this 3 days straight with no success, also tried adding clove essential oil and even tree tea, it has faded it a little but it is still there. Want to repaint but advice is need to get rid of the mould beforehand. Any other suggestions Please.
Hi Maria. I'm no expert on mold but perhaps your mold is deeper into the material of the ceiling or walls? Vinegar will remove it, if it is more in the surface. I would recommend you seek the advice of an expert in mold before painting or doing anything else, so that you are sure that you are not masking something more serious. Good luck with it!

Yes that would be perfect for the job--so long as it is white vinegar (ie clear in colour)..I believe that the cleaning vinegar means it is has a slightly stronger acetic acid (vinegar) than the standard white vinegar that can be used for cleaning and cooking. I've been using that flat mop for years, so I've become quite proficient, even when cleaning difficult spots, like cracks and corners... however, some places I do have to do by hand (carefully and safely on step ladder) in order to get into them properly. No I do not think so. Apple cider vinegar is usually a lot more expensive than white vinegar. It is also darker in colour. It might leave marks on the white ceiling. Stick to white vinegar.

Yes it is. I just used the white vinegar that you buy in the food section of the grocery store... don't worry the smell will disappear in about 30 minutes of airing.

Hi there Tatiana. I would not use Apple cider vinegar as it is a darker colour and might stain. If your mold situation is really bad, probably best to get a mold-removing professional. I just know that vinegar has worked very well for me. It does grow back, though, if ventilation continues to be a problem. I have drop ceiling tiles with a yellow looking spot mold popping up anyone use vinegar on these type of drop tile or seen this type of mold being a yellowish spot type
Hi there. This might not be a surface issue. I would recommend that you get in a professional to investigate for water damage or water leaks, or water coming from windows etc. Yellow mold stains through tiles could be reflecting a bigger issue, and even though there is never a good time for these sorts of problems... better to know what you're dealing with, especially as mold is not good for your health either. Do you use water with the vinegar?
Hi Monique. I actually did use 100% straight white, cooking vinegar as I was confident that would be ok, on my ceiling and wall surfaces. If you are not sure, maybe use 50% vinegar and 50% hot water, with a few drops of dishwashing detergent. Vinegar is naturally acidic so you do need to be careful with some surfaces eg marble or stone or some wood, but if you use it only as an occasional treatment, and mild, should be ok... do a spot test if unsure.

does the vinegar leave a smell
It does for a while but it goes in about an hour...I just use normal cooking white vinegar not the darker cleaning vinegar

I don't think I did rinse anything in this particular video but I did suggest you can add some essential oils if you want. The vinegar smell does evaporate after about half an hour. I am sensitive to smells and it really does go, after you air the bathroom. ( I just used straight vinegar and I wanted it to really soak in to the ceiling and I also used the vinegar to wipe over the glass and stainless steel fixtures.)

Hi there Super Friday. Perhaps have a look for industrial flat mops. (Bunnings now have industrial cleaning supplies too or google it.) The industrial ones may have a longer telescopic handle....otherwise, I have that same issue in my stair-well and I intend to use a very long painting pole handle and either try and attach my flat mop to it or rig something up. I can totally understand your point of view, but it's all about how you hold it and how you apply the tension. It took me a little while to stop the flicking over etc, but I definitely got better with practice. Having the microfibre cover in both sides is very useful, in this Vileda Flip Flat Mop 👌 👍

Hi did the mold ever return?
It did after many months, but that is purely because my sons keep leaving damp towels on the ground and the ventilation is not great...ie, they don't leave the extraction fan on for long enough after. I made that vid about 2 years ago and I've cleaned it 3 times since, just with the vinegar.

@@ActiveDomesticsCleaning I just purchased a house that have mold on the walls. Lots of mold in three large rooms. I was planning on using MRM 86 & MRM 141 mold killer but I don't know if it actually kills the mold so that it won't come back or I might just replace the drywalls
@@o.g.-reala3326 if the mold is very dark and thick, pay a professional mold remover. It will eat away at walls, if not treated. If it is scattered and more general, then try the vinegar...quick with the flat mop and cheap. Either way, you need to figure out why it got moldy in the first place, and solve that issue or be prepared that it will be an ongoing issue. Ventilation and dampness is usually the most common.... Perhaps you have a roof leak? A quote from a professional mold remover might help avoid replacing the dry wall. Good luck!
