  • The motor or spindle was sounding rough on the haas vf0e and the load meter was reading high when cutting fresh air, the vector drive went pop and the machine was down!
Drive repaired and possi ble cause was found
Hope this may help others suffering similar issues
    Thanks

    Good job.
I've got an old 1996 VF-6 and I'm dealing with the issue of the tool change. The spindle alignment fails to happen. The key locking dog will not engage and the spindle keeps rotating and finals stops with fault. Last night I kept resetting while also grabbing the tool to try and stop it at the correct position. After more than 20 minutes of this it started to work, sometimes I need to help stop the spindle in the right location. After running the machine for a few hours with only 6 tool changes, at the end of the day the tool change happen quick with precision. It has been doing this now for 4 times. Like 4 months worth of time. The machines does not get used. I'm going to have to take the covers off the spindle area and clean and check the electrical connections. It works fine after warming up it seems.

If it is an old spindle not machine then it most likely has an orientation shot pin set up and that is probably old and worn and not engaging properly so i would advise replacing the shot pin assembly and that will probably solve your issues but as you say first step is to get up there and remove the head covers to have a proper look
      Thanks

THANK YOU. I've been having the same exact issues after replacing the encoder belt. Will do what you did to the bracket and tighten up that encoder belt!

@@kinzy_fabrications I'm confident it will! A Haas service tech told me to tension the belt and that would get the spindle load back down where it was before the encoder belt change... but on these older mills, there is no room for adjustment. You sir didn't let that stop you! I'll be doing the same trick!

*Even if you don't enable "jog without zero," you can always use zero return: single axis!*
Since it wasn't touching, I would have zero returned single axis on the Z, then power up restart once it's safe.
PS. if you do enable "jog without zero," know that you've also disabled limits and _could_ blow an amp if you have a bad sensor or keep jogging past a limit. I've seen oopsies that lucked out and didn't blow the amp, and they still attempt to overcurrent protect, but it's good to be aware of the risk.

      Hi
      Where abouts are you based?
I see you repair a lot of these but I am in the uk and shipping alone would be very expensive and the turn around would probably let take too long

Nice one Marc. I would have guessed the encoder was an absolute one so would be o.k. to spin slightly

Just an fyi, there is a setting called ' jog w/o zero return' that allows you to handle jog before a Power Up.

Did you check the spindle encoder, belt and pulleys?

      Hi
Yes the spindle encoder belt was really sloppy and was causing noise issue and also causing load meter issues, i changed the belt and it sorted the issue with noise and load meter
      Thanks
