    I have the exact machine to the left.... 1991 VF-1 #1215. Sadly, none of this new fancy stuff works on my old girl and manual setup is a must. At least it keeps me sharp and able to teach my sons the "old" way. Same as my BP-2J and 2 manual lathes, none of which have DRO (yet).
    I hated having to learn math the manual way and was upset that I couldn't just use a calculator, but as an adult I now understand. You really need to have the knowledge of what you are doing before letting the machine do it for you. It's what separates a true Machinist from an Operator.

    Hi Mark. I have been using all my data on mobile to watch your amazing videos. Usually i own an Indian make machining center. Now i have decided to expand my business and own a Haas. I just came across on your Indian website about huge discount on a Haas VF2 and VF4 models. But they have mentioned its a VF2I and VF4I. So whats the difference between a VF2 and a VF2I? I have become a mad fan of Haas Automation and your dedication to provide us with great machines with Value for money pricing. Keep going guys. Lots of love from India. And Mark, hats off to you.     What other games can be installed on the control besides pac man? Also do you have a boss button that I can press that will quickly exit the game when my boss walks by so I don't get caught playing games?

    Haas you need to incorporate a probe stylus length into your calibrations. This way, if the control knows the stylus is only 4 inches long and the user tells it to probe 6" deep it should pause with an M109 code, warning the probe depth is larger then stylus length.
    I did this for our UMC after someone fat-fingered a number and destroyed the spindle probe (not just the stylus!) Any z values greater than 2 inches will prompt the user to press Y to continue.

    Found something interesting about variable 188.
    If I probe a Z surface on say G54, then I probe a Z surface for G55. 188 shows the difference between them.
    No matter how many times I probe G55 or anything besides G54, it always shows the current difference between G54 and the next Z surface I probe.
    Very handy.

    I used to pick up work offsets with an edge finder and Gage blocks then I went to Ecuador for 5 years and then when I came back I started working for a company that used only probing now even if somebody offered me $10 an hour more to work at their shop but they did not have probing I would not even consider it. Maybe it's because I am lazy or maybe it's because if they don't have probing that means they're not keeping up with the times

      Aaron - I had the same experience. Once I started using probes, I couldn’t imagine not having them. I use them for fast part setups, broken tool detection, part inspection, comparative probing (part I’m making, against a known good part mounted in the machine) and to make sure parts are loaded correctly. Probing and TSC Through Spindle Coolant are hard to live without once you’ve used them. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    This is total fantasy stuff!, watch and enjoy, and then go back to the reality of making batches of parts on an old clunker of a mill with not even a DRO on it. Close my eyes and the worn out 40 year old Bridgeport turns into a gleaming new state of the art Hass with amazing control software, I wish!

    At GE, at the start of every part program the part probe would be programmed to touch off of the tool probe to find the centers of all the probe tips then the probe was programmed to move over to the part & probe the part in X, Y, & Z. the way you showed how to do it involves operator involvement which should always be kept to a minimum to prevent operator induced error. Granted we had so engineers that caused the part probes to crash into parts ruining a $25,000 part probe.

    IMO, Probing is to CNC what the DRO was to manual machining. Having learned in the old days with a gage block or pin and an edgefinder, setups are sooooooooooooooooooooo much easier today on the modern control with WIPS

    I'm in a machining class and when learning to probe our workpiece, we probed the back left corner. it checked the x and y in one position on each side, then we went to another probing routine where we probed a different corner and when we did it probed two points on each side. I have been looking for documentation to say why it did that and why it differs from probing the left rear corner. thanks for your help

    I need to know how to use vise corner probing cycle. Where should I place the OMP ribbo, o above corner and which corner? Or above centre of my part? The controller does not show me that! I use vf-2tr.

    Hi Mark and Haas, Great video!
    Just one question! I use the Bore probing cycle a lot. All my parts have a 0.625 bore drilled from Op1 and I want to continue to use this as the WCS for Op2. However, after putting my part in to a Op2 fixture, I'm getting a slight mis-match in the angle of the part(around 0.001 or less).
    Is there a way to combine the G68 angle (as you've shown in your previous video) and keep a Bore hole as my G54 offset? I'm hoping this would remove the 'off angle' error I am seeing in my part.

    But why there is a big difference in height between the VF2 and the DM2 control, it makes it very uncomfortable to work on the control?

    Is there a reasonable way to preset with work probe to NOT zero? I am running castings that I find the top of part with a work probe routine in my part program and set Z=0 but I then have to do a macro routine to shift G54 down .025 in Z in order to get where I need to be. Was easy enough to do until the job came up again with "program restart" enabled. Can you guess what happened? Any time you exited and restarted it would increment G54 down .025". Needless to say that was a problem. Now restart is left off except if needed. I'm looking for a more elegant solution that won't leave me vulnerable to the restart feature needing to be "off". Thought about using the macro variable the probe writes to but couldn't figure out where it went and if it was saved or went away. Any tips?

      To avoid the issue you describe, we can either 1) Write our program based on the Z cast face (facing at Z-.025), avoiding a Work Offset shift altogether, or 2) Write a macro to evaluate whether the machine is in Program Restart, Graphics Mode, or running in Real Time, and only shift if in Real Time. Writing #5023=#5023-.025 will bring our G54 Z down by .025” each time it is run - even if the program is run in Graphics, or with Program Restart (Setting 36 On) - just like we commanded. To avoid running certain code when in Graphics/Restart, I will write Macro Logic that evaluates the time a dwell takes (using #3001). If a .5 second dwell happens in less than .5 seconds (instantly) then we are in Graphics/Restart mode, and I have the program skip the Offset Shift, or Alarm out. Shoot me an email at TOD@Haascnc.com, and I can send you some short example programs. Some probing cycles, like the Probe-a-bore cycle in VQC or VPS allow us to put in an XY shift amount, where it will shift the Work Offset by this amount after probing. I don’t know of a direct shift feature in a Z-axis Single Surface probing cycle, but you can always give the good folks at Renishaw a call. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

    I find the probing interface on the older system under VQC MUCH more streamlined- plus you can jog the probe to the starting location while in the interface, and not have to go back to Hand Jog.
    One question or issue I have run into though. When trying to do tool offsets (Auto lengh and diameter) on very small endmills (

    Why isn’t access to the probing cycles available on the offset page on software version 2038 like Mark is describing in this video?
    I can see adding features in later versions of software but why take away such useful features in later versions of the software??
    And also, why is there no shortcut to probing from the offset page at all? I know there is access to the probing cycle to the far right on the tool offset page. But that’s all as far as I can tell. Of course probing can be accessed from edit_VPS.

    can you do a video on set up for a trunnion with DWO on a VF or DT. Its so many more steps and tools compared to the old trunnions I have set up but once set up its awesome but I had to order a small calibration sphere to get it done.

    What I have never understood is why go to all the trouble of probing every job and every tool for every job.
    If you set your origin to a fixed point and you never change it (say bottom left of the table with Z0 at the surface of the table.
    Then put the part in the right place by say having pins on your table so your vice is always in a known location. Then you generate the program with the stock in the right location then you can just put the stock on the vice and start. No messing around with offsets?

    Haas default setting is 5 digit.
    Example- O 11221
    I need- O 1122.

      5 digits is required. You can enter less than 5 digits but the control will add leading zeros.

    We have DMG mori machines, probing is more easy and more friendly, even the system is quite simple from siemens, but i am interested into Hass machine because are cheaper comparing to DMG mori

    If I use measure cycle 2 BOSS to get to the centre of the part, I have a clamp in the centre so how do I make sure the Z goes up higher enough to go over the clamp, Im new to this and only used the machine for 2 days and dont want to smash the probe.

    Is there a way to probe one surface, say a Z height on a fixture plate, then manually shift that offset to reflect the zero position on the part. I tried just manually adjusting the difference and I got an error.

      After we probe our Z surface, we can adjust our Z Axis Work Offset by highlighting the correct column/row (G54...Z), inputting the shift amount, and pressing Enter (Add) or F1 (Overwrite). If we get an error message, it is probably just a warning because the value in our Setting 142 OFFSET CHNG TOLERANCE is set smaller than the amount we want to adjust things by. If we get the warning, we can just continue, by verifying the large change by pressing "Y", or we can zero-out Setting 142 which will disable the feature.

    I worked at a cnc for a year! Ran parts in n out of the machine. I would give my boss a heads up we’re running out of material! We’re out for like month or 3. Coolant, mill parts, the guy was crazy! Just found out the place ran out of business! Glad I was gone already!

    In the macro line for the probe cycle it uses "S" value for work coordinates 54 through 59. How would I use to for work coordinates G154 P1 thru P99

    Is it possible to break the probe tip with hand jog or does it stop you from doing that?

      Eggsr2bcrushed hand jog is the easiest way to break a stylus unfortunately. The probe has to be on and in a G65 (protected) move for the probe stylus to detect the contact and stop axis motion.

      I tell our operators, as long as the receiver is lighting red, you can break it. If it's green, you're safe.

      Eggsr2bcrushed - Why are you asking me? Who have you been talking to? Yep, it is definitely possible (so I’ve heard), to break a probe tip when jogging around. The tips themselves are meant to break-away, and are reasonably priced. If you use the probing cycles in this video, the machine will alarm out if the probe accidentally bumps into something, with no damage. If probing, from within your G-code program, using the Renishaw Inspection Plus macros, you ALWAYS want to 1) Turn on your probe, and then 2) Position your probe with a G65 P9810 Protected Positioning move, before moving anywhere.     So what about the ones that don’t have a “probe action column?” I get x y and z then the next column is work material. There’s no column for probe action.

      For a very short time, while we were integrating some software improvements, probing was removed from the Work Offset page. In this case, you can probe through VPS by pressing EDIT>VPS and navigating to the Probing templates. If you do have software version 100.17.000.2030, you can call your dealer and ask to have your software upgraded to add probing back to your Work Offset page.       Are you just looking to make sure the part is loaded correctly, or do you want to actually reset a Work Offset, from within your program, with your probe?     Can you not make a probing cycle in MDI on the new controller, like I can on the classic controller?

      Joseph - The new NGC control will take all of the same Classic G-Code style probing programs, like G65 P9995, G65 P9023, along with all of the Renishaw Inspection Plus cycles. You can still probe from the Offset pages, like we did on the Classic controls as well. The NGC does not have the same VQC templates (black background) that the classic controls had though, these have been replaced by newer VPS probing templates that can be accessed by pressing EDIT, and then navigating to the VPS tab and selecting ‘probing’. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

      In this video we are using a Haas Renishaw OMP 40-2 Spindle Probe, which is an option on many of our machines.

    Does anyone know the difference between “outside corner” and “vice corner”? Cause they seem identical

      It really depends on the version of Software. In most cases, "Vise Corner" will probe the Z, along with the XY of the corner, while "outside corner" only probes XY. In the latest NGC software, we have added the option to probe the Z face to many of our probing cycles.

    hi when I would probe my single surface I found Y axis in option how can I change it to z axis

      Mountassir echchelh - The template is just remembering your last probed axis. On some versions of software, we must press “ORIGIN” to reset the template (shows all axes again), instructions should be in the top right corner. If you are still having an issue, exit and re-enter the template. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

    Sorry, too cumbersome! I can get X,Y and Z on that small block in under 20 seconds with an edge finder. My new VF2 has the probe system and we don't even use it anymore...The tool-setter is still ok for tool breakage detection. However, the probe needs to be streamlined a little - I'd like to see it have a manual mode to jog n touch in each direction...

      Ive been machining for a couple years and have never seen someone set Z with an edge finder, I don't think it's possible honestly. If it is then I'd love to know how!

      Sorry, I've been doing this for so long it's second nature to me. Over ten years with this method and never any issues. Here's how I go about this. 1. Keep an edge finder in the machine at all times in a dedicated tool #. 2. Then touch off the length of the edge finder the same way you would with any other tool. 3. When you go to set G54 "Z" slowly bring down the edge finder on top of the part in .001 increments using the movable tip to act as a feeler gauge. 4. As soon as there is contact, hit the "TOOL OFFSET MEASURE" button. 5. Add the length of the tool to your G54 z value. Viola - Z is set with edge finder. Once you get used to this method, it is actually very fast.

      I like that! never though of it but its so simple.
      I set all my tools off a ground boss of known height (the same height as the top of my fixed jaw). Then to set my Z on stock like this, I just measure the distance between the top of stock and my vice jaw with my callipers and bang that value (minus my facing amount) into my offset page. It's fast too and doesn't cost thousands as an optional extra. Its a shame they couldn't have integrated the z datum probing into the X and Y cycle, would half the time it takes straight away.

    When probing a single surface I notice on your VPS screen that negative values for X and Y are allowed, on my new VF2SS only positive values are allowed. Is there a setting to change this?

      Hi Bill. There is no setting for that. They are different software versions and have what we consider improvements on the new.

      The variable that records what Tool Number is used by the probe is automatically set during the Probe Calibration Process. The easiest way to change this is just to move your Probe to that Tool Number/Pocket and then recalibrate.

      Thomas - Obviously the control has changed in 20 years, but many of the tips apply to all machines and even just machining in general. We get a lot of feedback from non Haas users that the tips are still helpful. Haas Automation

    Why isn’t access to the probing cycles available on the offset page on software version 2038 like Mark is describing in this video?
    I can see adding features in later versions of software but why take away such useful features in later versions of the software??
    And also, why is there no shortcut to probing from the offset page at all? I know there is access to the probing cycle to the far right on the tool offset page. But that’s all as far as I can tell. Of course probing can be accessed from edit_VPS.

      Dean - Probing from the Work Offset page was put back onto the control, with major improvements, in 100.17.000.2040 Software. You can work with your local Haas Factory Outlet to have your machine Software upgraded to the latest. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day
