- Pizza rolls should taste like pizza, savory pepperoni, gooey cheese, fried in a homemade dough? I don’t think I’ll ever burn the roof of my mouth again with a Totino’s Pizza Roll.

As a Polish person it always blows my mind to see a variety of snack you have over there. I remember specially ordering a box of American snacks, like Twinkies, Butterfinger and other stuff. Everything was delicious, and I was sick for 3 days afterwards. We don't have anything like pizza rolls, but I would love to try.
As an American i can understand why its overwhelming and teust me his food is always better. Its getting to the point the food makes me sick so getting to have healthier versions keeps me happy
The real secret to American snacks is to only eat a few at a time. More than a small snack and you're gonna feel like trash later
Almost the entire world is jealous of USA's vast variety of processed snacks. Even in the UK (very snacking and obese country) we don't have that variety.
@@Zuxicovp1 this is a good point
@@otherssingpuree1779 here in india we cant even find pizza dough or cookie dough
I love pizza rolls for what they are, but this video made me realize they’re basically just fried ravioli. I might make these larger to more accurately match the size of ravioli (or even larger) to spare making 8 billion tiny rolls and instead have like a dozen larger ones. Cuts the labor but still delivers papa’s flavors!
Oh my god, you're right.
Lookup a calzone recipe
If you look carefully at his try you can see that he did indeed ravioli some of them
Ravioli doesn’t have a crust…
@@cekane88 wow, good eye! I didn’t even notice that on first watch, but going back, I see you’re right! Maybe I subliminally caught that. 😂
Respectively, I only eat pizza rolls when I am drunk and coming home late. No matter how good your recipe is, nothing quite beats having the ability to be blackout drunk and still achieve tasty sauce pockets in 12-14 minutes with little to no effort. 😅🤣
2-3 minutes in the microwave
@@TheNinjaNarwhals they are on another level when air-fryed....
what a disgusting excuse for a life
I don't understand why people drink (not a drinking habit/addiction) it really just ruins your body lol, i wonder why smart people live longer..
@@brianchadwell2 Why would I want to waste more time waiting on food when a microwave exists, especially when drunk?
Josh you asked how did the cheese retain its shape inside of the Torino’s Pizza Roll. There’s something called Hi-Temp cheese. They’re little cubes typically used when making sausages, jerky sticks etc so that they don’t break down during long cooks like you typically would see with smoking sausages etc. You can find them in outdoorsy stores and probably online a bunch of places.
you learn something new everyday
Mr white?
What makes them hi-temp? More high-quality ingredients? Or chemicals?
@@carrionsloan4518 i read this as though u were jessie from breaking bad, idk if that's what u were going for but lol
at this point, this series only exists to make us feel like our meal is lacking when we don't eat Josh's version.
^
right??! xD
Does Josh like any food that isn’t his own? Genuine question
this series only exists to make us feel like our meal is lacking when we don't share Josh's taste in food.
@@TheHilltopperNation he said he likes chipotle
I buy pizza rolls for the first time in years last night and the Weiss Man puts this out today. 10 years from now I'll make these.
🤣🤣🤣
Bro literally me, like 2 days ago i saw them in the freezer aisle and went for it... Cooked them last night and BAM. Papa hits me with this....
Thank you so much for this. I've always wanted to make these for my Japanese son and his buddies but didn't want to take out a loan to buy them in Japan.
Egg roll wrappers work good. After you deep fry them melt butter and add finely chopped garlic soften the garlic then toss the pizza rolls into the butter garlic mix, use the fake Parmesan cheese in the shaker sprinkle it generously of the rolls and enjoy.
@@Steyrshrek1 Sounds good! I'll give it a try. I regularly make fried gyoza but never tried it pizza style.
@@makokx7063 Where in Japan do you live? I can get them cheap on base here if you live near Machida station.
@@gregoryaustin42 Thanks for the offer! I'm close to Yokosuka and actually went to the base on a friendship day or something about a decade ago.
Fortunately when I made these and tinkered with the recipe they came out better than the one's in store. Also didn't melt the roof of the mouth. lol
Great video! My only question is how would the homemade version hold up to being frozen and reheated? I only ask because I am seriously considering making a bunch of them and freezing them so I can heat them us as needed.
Not to mention thrown in the nuker? I shouldn't use the oven without help because of my balance and seizures, so I tend to c cook a lot in the microwave.
I've actually made a cheaper version of these before, we got all the stuff store-bought (forgive me Papa), but it still turned out so much better than a normal pizza roll
I just deep fried mine to make them better lol
I'd love to see a Making Of episode one day where we can see how much time and effort goes into one episode from deciding on the dish to developing the advanced recepie and the actual cooking/filming process with nothing left out (shortened of course but you get where I'm going with this). Maybe something for the 6M or 7M subscriber special?
this but its on april fools and its a but better episode where they get another youtuber reviewing a video and then making a video.
Oo maybe he could start streaming when he cooks
I’ve made so many things with your recipes and they’re always incredible! Your butterfingers and Birria tacos are my favorites! I also use your pancake recipe for my family regularly.
I will 100% be making this for a reds or Bengals game I host for friends and family this year. Thank you for all your recipes
I appreciate your dedication to technique
I do love Totino's Pizza Rolls, but I DEFINITELY wanna try "Papa's" version now.
I just made a pizza chimichanga🤣
I would pay to see how you came up with that idea 😂
@@anthonymcnatt3799 make a video and post it pls
I'm sharing this with my sister! She used to be able to eat Totino's pizza rolls but has since developed an allergy and can't anymore. She missed them so she will be so excited to see this. You said you don't expect anyone to make these? I do!
If she developed an allergy to something in the rolls wouldn't Josh's recipe also trigger her allergies?
@@DankSoulsVoid she could replace whatever she developed an allergy too like i’m doing! switching some ingredients around to make a vegan version
My condolences. A pizza roll allergy sounds terrible.
@@DankSoulsVoid So a lot of times it's not necessarily the food itself, but an allergy to a preservative or chemical in that process. So making them homemade would do far better
You're such a good sister!
First, your amazing videos saved my life by giving me perfect moments to turn off my brain. Then, my husband ACTUALLY STARTED MAKING YOUR THINGS and you saved my tummy. Then, I made your Cesar salad and you made me feel like an actual cooking adult. Thank you!
Idk how you popped up in my recommendations, but I'm glad you did. I haven't had these pizza rolls in years but made me remember how much I ate them back then. These were our lifesavers when we didn't have much in the house.
I made giant Pizza rolls for my family using eggroll wrappers. Didn't think of using wonton wrappers! Look so good as always
How did they turn out with the eggroll wrappers? Cuz, I'm not gonna lie, that sounds 🔥🔥 if I'm in a "idc, let's eat like a heathen today" kinda mood.
These are called pizza logs and they're a freezer staple in western NY state. I never ate Totino's growing up because we had these instead
@@ngkasp Well, guess I gotta go to western NY sometime soon.
You can also just split the eggroll wrappers in two and make minis.
@@mood_court Very crunchy and filling! Cooked in the fryer in like 4 minutes, and tasted pretty close to what pizza rolls were probably supposed to taste like.
I would really love a "hamburger helper" version of but better. Because it's simple and easy but the flavors can be lacking and we have to add extra spice already. I'd love to see how you nail the flavors better but also kind of doing a one-pan-meal.
Eh just experiment with it and see what sticks
Yesh!
I actually have a home made hamburger helper with spicy sausage. It is pretty easy to make.
isn't that just sliders
Adam K the box foods
Thanks! Watched this right before i fell asleep. Now I will dream of pizza rolls. 🤤
Im a Totinos fan but your homemade version looks bussin! Ive been watching too much Mav, Ive never used "bussin" before. Not sure how I feel about it. I love watching your vids though, thanks Josh!
I made this before. Used a pack of wonton wrappers instead of making dough. Way easier and still awesome.
He even cooked the Totinos in the oven, something I'd estimate only about 10% of people actually do. Most eat thier dough-wrapped meat and cheese cubes molten AND soggy
While you are correct. These are 100x better cooked in the oven. It haze been years since I have had these.
Top tier is microwave to warm and defrost, broil a little bit to toast and crisp. Perfect.
Air fryer really makes these crispy.
I fry mines
Dude, I put mine in the oven or air fryer. Not friggen SOGGY.
I am making these now. Love your make it better series! I prefer to make some American snack myself because I know they will be just little better for Me than eating what’s at the store. So thank you!
As someone who adores pizza rolls I am both appalled yet intrigued. The home made ones defiantly look amazing.
I’ll always love Totino’s pizza but Josh’s looks delicious!
I just can't wait to prepare these gorgeous Totinos pizza rolls for my hungry guys.
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO... AHH, FUMBLE!
What is happening to my hungry guys?!?!🤷♀️
Considering this is on my birthday AND my favorite food truly makes me happy
As someone just getting in to cooking/baking (I love your channel btw, I make your bagel recipe weekly), that *ding* at 1:51 scared the hell out of me🤣 I was immediately like "oh shit what did I leave in the oven!?!?"
Josh it's truly amazing how you hate every food that I find delicious. I could eat an entire 90 count bag of pizza rolls right now and be happy
Big same. With a nice vintage ranch dressing 🤤
@@yayerin wouldn't even need ranch...
Omg I was thinking the same thing
@@yayerin Let's be honest, pizza rolls are really just a vehicle for ranch.
Thanks for all the great content Josh! You finally convinced me to cut using the claw technique and it's so much faster! I also now realize how dull my knife is, and am looking into sharpening tools.
May I request a foreign treat? There's a belgian/dutch "sausage" called a Frikandel. Legend has it it's made from the scraps of 1000 cattle and is some of the worst snack food around. I'm sure you can make it a LOT better. I'd love your take on that.
Yesssss!!! Frikandellen would be an excellent option. But he would probably have to go to NL/BE to get a 'real' one.
Papa- if you want to come to NL- I'll host you and your crew.. but you have to cook.
Take a look at Pitmaster X he's Dutch and recently made these.
Thanks for the inspiration! Going to try something like this soon, probably with wonton wrappers.
The "Before Chill" playing in the background is top tier!
Yayyyy! Hello people! I’m so early the food is still warm
Ayyy same
Wut up
Cringe
I'm so early that my sponsorblock addon didn't skip the intro
lol :D
I never really liked pizza rolls but if made like this from home, I'll definitely give 'em a go.
Yo Klay Klash! What do you do lol
i just bought your book i hope it rocks cuz i love your channel
With everything going on in the world right now, this is a major relief to watch. Gonna get your book
For years I’d make things like these, freeze on a silpat tray and fry up from the freezer when desired-super fast snack.
Love the paper towel trick! I always hate having to clean up bubbling red sauce
First video I’ve watched and I already subscribed. The intro got me.
I saw this book in my sister's table the other day and she's been cooking from your book nonstop since she first opened it
Pizza rolls never let me down yet! Could you do outback kookaburra wings next?
This is awesome. I loved pizza rolls growing up and as an adult they became a go to "late night and drunk" snack. I'm tempted to give this a try. (Ok, obviously these are ones you'd have to make while sober, but that's fine.)
Going to buy your book now. These videos are great
Childhood favorite??? I just graduated college and I still love these
I was Sooooo HOPING for this one!! ❤️
I'm totally going to make these. I'll probably make a big batch and freeze them so I can have a few whenever i want.
Joshua I have your cookbook it's the best!!! I can't wait for the next one!!
I really enjoyed this video for a lot of reasons starters you and I are the same as a kid well you and I had different versions I used to love Totino pizza rolls till I hit my 30s then it didn't taste right no more so for years I've been trying to figure out how to do my own and that's when I found your video you actually open my mind to new things on this one for that I thank you
Oh my goodness I would put a whole roasted garlic clove in each little pocket 🤤🥰
Holy freakin heck, that sounds amazing.
Just a thought: to get the commercial, uniform Totino’s look, I would make these more like ravioli. Lay out long strips of your pastry and place the filling at even increments on the pastry. Then, moisten the unfilled sections of pastry, lay another length over the top, then carefully press firmly around the filling, being careful not to trap any air. Then, using a pizza cutter, cut them into perfect, even rectangles for frying. This way you won’t get the folded edges.
That's actually a solid idea. You also avoid the hassle of folding entirely.
Excellent idea! I'm rather surprised he didn't do it exactly as you said, considering his means of making _empeñadas._
Josh, you make a second book im obviously gonna buy it as I anticipate your third book. Especially if the prices for a real hard copy remain so low. GL & HF! You are a gift to those of us who love cooking. But most of all you point us to new recipes and some good laughs! Good Speed to PAPA!
This video was on my birthday. Just got this book in the mail today whoo
Easier to make and less prone to blowouts is the fried ravioli version (which I think really is what these are based on) and we even saw that josh was making those as well on the sheet pan.
We don't have these in France, but I have heard of it, and the homemade version must be really good, I mean : cheese, pepperoni and tomato sauce, yum!
Also, am I the only one noticing that Pano has the EXACT SAME voice as Jonah Hill? 😂
this is what ive been waiting for!!
At this point I have to watch your videos every night to be able to sleep such a good influence
I'm saving this video, not to make the pizza rolls (that seems silly) but to make the tomato sauce with Fresno chilis. Sounds delightful
I'm simultaneously intrigued at the idea of seeing Joshua make pepperoni and terrified at the prospect. I don't know whether this would be an "I can no longer eat pepperoni" experience, or merely an "I can no longer eat non-homemade pepperoni" experience.
you can never be better than the rolls there just legendary
As soon as I saw a video so I subscribed and I eat pizza rolls a lot so I will try to make these

You are correct to guess wonton dough, as I had eaten larger rolls that were essentially an egg roll stuffed with pizza filling, and these have the same crust texture.
I am eating pizza rolls right now and I freaking love them!
Currently eating my air fried totinos pizza rolls and I can confidently say, I will not stop eating these. Your looks good tho josh 👍
Hey Joshua!
I'm vegan and was wondering if you could do more vegan recipes on your channel, I really enjoy watching your videos, you're hilarious and I always get put in a good mood when I watch your videos!
Thank you! ❤️
😅 you guys love announcing it
Looks delicious 👏
my all-time favorite thing about this is that "but better" started out as a "haha what if" and now we're 68 episodes in and you're still kickin' ass with it lmao
Oh my gosh, these are so good. I don't know why they called them pizza rolls, because they don't really taste like pizza. But they are still really good and that makes them different from any other pizza pocket or roll. I can remember going over to my family's friends house and playing dolls, watching TV, and eating these.
I honestly view totinos rolls as a depression food--doesnt taste that great but its easy and quick in the microwave and gives me enough energy to sustain myself for a day
Bro they taste amazing what drugs are you on 😭
@@jojobod oh it turns out my depression made me unable to taste food lol; doin better now and can actually experience flavors again its wild
This seems awesome for a party or something. Thanks man!
This gave me an idea for a video. Snacks you can make and freeze for easy and quick cooking. I've never been a fan of these, but there is plenty of stuff I take out of the freezer and microwave or use the airfryer.
I’m actually curious if Josh likes any food that he doesn’t make. Like come on, he says he hates basically everything then as soon as he makes it he loves it
He's that guy that want's to talk to the chef when he goes out to eat, probably walks in the back and glares at the cooking staff.
He’s a pretentious tool. Always talking shit about restaurants and how shitty their product is yet he’s working out of his apt making food based off of others work. He’s such a joke.
@@nachotamale I won't argue with him being pretentious, but I am impressed that literally every other word you wrote was wrong.
It ain't hard to make better versions of the food that he aims for.

Glad you’re writing your next book!
I needed a snack for the night. LETS GO
Would be amazing if you did the regular totinos pizza too !
THIS
How they get the texture of the crust is what I'm most curious about. It's unique and delicious. I always microwave mine specifically because of the rubbery texture that I prefer. Almost like calamari.
Totinos Totinos,
Hot pizza rolls.
Totinos Totinos,
Everybody’s talkin’ ‘bout
tbh yours visually look like the generic version of Totinos (either Aldi or Kroger brand), which isn't a diss because tbh the "generic" version tastes way better and has way better texture than Totinos IMO, so i bet these are awesome
I will make these and serve them next party we have. Will be freezing them so I can make an incredible amount of them. Hopefully that won't cause any problems!
PAPA JOSH! I love that you took this challenge. I would like to make a request that you make Swedish Princess Cake! PLEASSSSEEEE!!!!
Josh, did you try keeping any of these in the freezer and then fry at a later date? Having one of the supermarket But Better items in the freezer sounds like a big clutch moment when you think "I really want a toaster strudel," and want one in the next 30 minutes as opposed to 3 hours.
These look like they are easy to store in the freezer and just reheat like Totino’s
@@paola7045 I want to believe.
You can probably freeze em easy if you do it properly.
I’d fry them for like half the time or so. So they’re cooked but no crispy
Well since you like challenges and it takes someone to tell you “you can’t do it” and we ALL know you could….
YOU CANNOT “But Better” BETTY CROCKER CHEESEBURGER MACARONI!!
*please note, I know you can but i really wanna see how you make it better! 😅
bruh thats literally the easiest thing to "But Better." Its good but is always so bland. You can just make some pasta and ground beef, make a cheese sauce with some seasoning and its better.
@@NotSilent_ ummmm….I believe the whole point of the “but better” series is to turn the blandest of foods into something extravagant. Your statement just justified why he could do an episode on the dish.
Saving this for game day fr
Bro.
1. Awesome. Way to go. those look amazing! seriously bad ass.
2. ain't nobody got time for that when they want a pizza roll
No way 🤤
You gonna have to make them
Yum!
Claire Saffitz is still the pizza rolls queen, but nice try, Josh! The one good thing going for these is that they're easier to make since you can sub out the crust with store bought wonton wrappers. That definitely means that more ppl might try to make them, so that's a win!
Totinos rolls is a huge memory from my childhood. After them, hot pockets :) I'm 52 so to comment even today, shows their impact. The thing about Totinos Pizza Rolls was their flavor and texture. I'm sure their nutritional value is slightly above pond slime, maybe, but their value is nostalgic rather than benefit. That said, I'm sure yours are 1000% better healthwise, but being 10 and mom cooking 50 for me and friends to watch a movie, priceless..
If I were making these myself, because of the unrealistic amount of time it takes to make each one individually, I would change the shape up a bit and make them like ravioli. Use the same wonton/eggroll dough, do them in one big sheet and then cut them into their separate individual "rolls". Sure, they wouldn't look the same, but they would still taste the same and still be bite-sized.
