- Guest video made by Ron Metchis: He prepares an unclassified Iron meteorite with sanding and then reveals the internal pattern with acid etching. We are the first humans to see inside this space art.
Finally...an answer to what type of Iron meteorite he bought a few years back, although it remains unclassified. The mystery has partially solved.

Looks great
Thank you.
That came out awesome! Thanks for the sharing the wisdom. What type of acid did you use?
Thanks. Ferric chloride available on Amazon.
Wow it turn out beautiful, great job.
Please what are the names of the Acid again?
Ferric chloride.
Thanks for being a paid member! 🤠 It helps us.
@@TopherspinMeteorites can I ask if you use straight or diluted ferric chloride and if diluted what was the ratio? We have one we want to etch and have the ferric chloride and want a better shot of getting it right the first time.
42% in a pre-mixed container. Search Amazon for "Ferric Chloride Etchant Solution".
@@TopherspinMeteorites thank you so much I'm hoping this turns out good😁
I tried this but made the mistake of leaving the feric chloride on it for a few minutes and I kept re applying it the end result was a snowflake pattern that was 3d I want to etch again but legit I over etched it to the point where the acid ate inches into my specimen. Should I grind it a few inches deep until I don't see any pits as this was caused by the feric chloride. Thanks
@@T.J.Williamson sounds like you overetched.
We know a lot about meteorites, but etching is not our specialty, which is why we host videos of other people who know a lot more than we do. I know we have content from Chris Monk, Ron Metchis and Craig Zlimen. Space Jules is pretty good with irons as well. Maybe one of them can share their feedback here in the comments. I will tell you what Space Jules would recommend.... A lot of these processes can only be learned through trial and error. I know she has personally over-etched meteorites in the past, but she tracks all of the things she does, measures the times, etc... and learns from her mistakes. She has specifically purchased some low priced iron meteorites from us that were starting to rust and used them to experiment and learn from. She bought an Uruacu from us and turned it into one of the most beautiful meteorites ever. So, keep an eye out for cheap irons like Aletai and use them for practice rust removal and etching techniques on. :)
Hi , Funny , I just asked about what happens if you etch doing , say , 10 acid etch cycles
What happens if you repeat to a total of say , 10 acid etching cycles ? Thank you , I am very currious about this.
I have never etched something ten times, so I honestly couldn't say. I'd be curious about the results as well!
WOW those turned out amazing!! Very kewl pattern to em.
Thanks a bunch! It is amazingly quick too!

What kind of acid are you using to etch the meteorite
Ferric Chloride
Very cool! I’m beginning to like the irons a bit more every time I see a video like this!! You’re not afraid of the acid getting in that crack and eating away the rest of the meteorite?
No worries at all. The acid is washed off in less than a minute. It can't do any damage other than a hair's deep since it is not allowed to penetrate. Good question. They are put in the oven or dehydrator before sealing them.
Great video i like this one very much! Since i found my first iron im more interested in metal part of meteorites! Thank you!
Glad to hear it! Time to slice and etch it?
Hello, can I use chemical etching meteorite, is it mixed with acid water, thank you very much.
Ferric Chloride is used to etch.
Looks like grey/ black camouflage!
Cool huh? Billions of years to form, revealed in seconds.
Great and perfect work teacher please are there types of nakhlit that attract magnets strongly
Yes, some types of Nakhlite meteorites can respond to strong magnets, especially those with fusion crust. Thanks for watching!
If you only get needle thin lines does it mean its been cut wrong or its not a Meteorite?
I am not sure what you are asking.
I believe they're asking if the widmanstatten pattern is much thinner like a Muonionalusta
I love a good fresh etch!
Or patina? ha
So ive etched meteorite before, but im currently trying to etch an inlay inside of silver and im not sure if the soldering process destroyed the widdenstat pattern?
I am not a metallurgist. But will try to help. What meteorite are you trying to etch a sliced piece of?
@@TopherspinMeteorites it's a muonionalusta meteorite. I'm pretty sure heating it up ruins the widdenstat pattern, becuz it will not etch. I hard soldered it to a silver ring and that heating process must've destroyed it.
Very highly possible. I have a 2kg Gibeon that will not etch. I was told that some got more heated (in space) than others. I am really sorry to hear the pattern is gone for you.
@@TopherspinMeteorites UPDATE: I went and bought new Muriatic acid and tried it after work??? It worked perfect. So I now am sitting on a muonionalusta ring, surrounded by silver. Now...I just have to be careful how I darken it...and coat it...
@@TopherspinMeteorites pretty stoked it actually worked. But I'm at a standstill. It's etched beautifully and surroundedby a silver ring. I just gotta take breath and figure out where to go from here.
Ron "The Etch Man" Metchis....Thank you!
Nice one!! Etch is actually in his name!!!
Terimakasih ilmunya
