  • Overview and demonstration of the Bosch GMS120 wall scanner with wood, metal and AC wire modes. This video is a little long but I demonstrate the scanner on ~1" thick drywall/plaster, standard 5/8" thick drywall, tile on 1/2" cement board and on 3/4" wood paneling. UPDATE: with some work I was also able to find floor joists below my oak hardwoods; great it you are installing snap-off screws to stop floor squeaks.

Nice vid. - cheers! Lots of detailed demos which was helpful, 'cos the tool takes a bit of getting used to, so it was great to watch someone else trying out various scenarios. Just bought one off of fleabay to help some home projects. Best wishes from Bristol, UK 🙂

I have one of these and honestly, if you plan to use this on concrete or brick walls, don't bother.

not always reliable. High frequency for sound. Cannot hear it!

Ive found it reliable for finding studs. For finding electrical, large metal and other things, yes, it isnt terribly reliable. Ive come across very few good studs finders for the thick walls in my house, so ill pay extra for that with this device.

You need to have the power on has to be a live current and it will read it have something on in the outlet or light switch trust me it works every time

The light was on above the scanner in the video so the wire was live. I think the thickness and composition of my old walls mess with the scanner sometimes.

No. I found this piece of junk totally unable to locate safely ANY live wire even in a brick wall, while on the other hand, beeps wildly (obviously randomly) over entire surfaces of some walls and even on a wooden table! I tried further with wifi disconnected (to prevent any possible inductive interference), holding it with isolation gloves etc., no success. Just stay away of it!

Can the Bosch find studs behind the tile & backer?

Yes, in the video, just before I locate the copper pipe, it detects screws in the durock

Can this detect pipes behind a wall?

Yes, if you go to around 6:05, I use it to find a pipe in the wall.

Would it find not live cable plastered in the wall?

    • @steveva7591
      @steveva7591  4 роки тому +1

Alexander Brankov That’s a tough one and probably not. It can detect non-ferrous metals such as copper pipes but copper or aluminum wires that are insulated and deep in the wall probably won’t be found.

Any chance I could get you to try it on tile to find a stud? You showed it finding the copper pipe, but I would love to know if it will work on tile to find a wood stud.

Mike, the stud finder does not always work well on "wood mode" but it will find nails/screws behind the tile. In the video, as I put the scanner on the shower wall, it briefly gives a reading for a magnetic/ferrous metal, that was it finding one of the studs behind the wall by means of finding a cement board screw.

You didn't read the internet video rules my man! Rule #1, landscape video only...
It's a rule, although unwritten into law, but trust me, don't do it.
Good commentary and perspective, hard to watch though.
