Atrocious choice of background music. This would have been an amazing tutorial otherwise. Very hard to understand what is being explained without cranking up the volume... Shame

Another tip if you use this to detect cables: Make sure you are grounded. The wall (and even the air) behind my OLED TV is detected completely as live cable, but when I put off my shoes with rubber sole, the detector is working great

Just purchased this tool today and it is quite disappointing. Can't really detect concealed electrical cable in brickwall as what it claimed.
I have tried on the electrical switch itself and it gave out warning. The moment when I moved GMS 120 to the top part of the switch where the concealed wire is running to the soffit, it FAILED TO DETECT ANYTHING.

Former Manufacturing Engineer/Electrician here. Upgraded to this product because of its capabilities. Too bad that it in 3 hours of testing with KNOWN locations of studs and wires I can not get consistent results at all. I read the entire manual and even recalibrated in a darkened area twice! I have NEVER had a stud finder that had to pass over a stud 3 times to find it! I purchased this to assure that I did NOT have to use finishing nails and repair drywall.
The Center of stud location is +/- 3/4 of an inch at best, meaning that after 20 try I can maybe map the stud....or not. I need CENTER OF STUD. In fact I can move it almost one inch when the center is shown with no change in the readings. Approach from the other side of the stud and it may or may not show the stud at all. I purchased this because I need to be in exact center of studs for structural reasons!
Meanwhile the live wire will not show a live wire at all, even when energized and location known and when wire is directly against the drywall on the inside of the wall.
It can sometimes find non-ferrous wires but not consistently enough (even when I knew where they were and could attempt from both sides of a wall. I get some positive ferrous readings where there are no studs at all (I doubt that there is iron in drywall material). I built the walls and know the locations of everything for testing, This is going back to the supplier.

I own one. All it detects is electricity. Seriously, even in wall mode. But no studs. And I mean no studs at all. But heaps of electricity. Even in my solid timber coffee table...electricity. So, if you want to confirm the there is electricity in every thing and every where this is the tool for you. If you wish to detect anything else then forget it. It is of some concern that Bosch have brought this to market.

It is very disappointing to find that this device is shown as a detector of 12 cm depth (hence the model name GMS120 = 120 mm), but the practice of detecting alternating current lines (AC) is only effective up to a depth of only 5 cm (when this is not enough at all for normal drilling in brick or concrete)!
It is worth noting that this device does not detect direct voltage line (DC), and is therefore ineffective for low-voltage wiring locations (solar power, etc.).
Note: this is not a criticism of the video, but of its product and way of advertising.

    • @NoisyBadAss

And DC lines made of what? Copper as well I assume. So it should be able to find in metal detection mode.

    • @ShimonKupferman
      @ShimonKupferman 3 роки тому +2

@@NoisyBadAss I am not sure that in metal detection mode it works properly on metals that do not magnetize.
Another thing: detection of electrical conductors, not only to not damage them, but mainly to prevent electric shock in contact with a metal screw/drill.
      thanks anyway!

And then, Why you don't disconnect the DC from the wiring and temporarily connect 50 or 60 Hz AC, energize them with a lamp, make your detection and mark the wall; and then revert to reconnecting the DC ?

  • @drumcdoo9050

Great review explaining why it malfunctions and how to get true readings rather than just binning tool and saying it's rubbish...
So many other videos don't rate electrical mode ~ just because switch is off! You naturally think that because switch is live one side that sigal should show...

Bought this a few months ago, it is an absolute nightmare. I thought a Bosch tool would be very good but I get live cables everywhere. Searching for a wooden stud is impossible as it shows live wires everywhere. Even when I know there isn’t. It’s not even consistent. I regret shelling out for it, no more accurate than knocking to find the stud and listening to the sound changes

This thing is absolutely useless garbage. At any given time, any and every section of every wall I’ve ever tested it on can have literally anything in it. You name it. One minute I’ve hit a stud, next minute it disappears. Next minute it’s electrified, next minute it’s ferrous, next minute it’s nonferrous, next minute there’s nothing there.
I’ve tested it on walls with no wiring in it and it tells me the whole wall is electrified. Even with multiple passes it spews out a confusing mess of noises and indicators that contradict each other constantly.
Completely unusable and one of the worst purchases I’ve ever made.

Doesn't work on acoustic soundbloc plasterboard with acoustic Rockwool inside the void. I'm guessing the sound waves used to detect materials are being absorbed by the acoustic board and/or the Rockwool. So glad we measured these studs and wrote it down on paper before we boarded and skimmed. The stud finder DOES NOT WORK!

Very good video: especially for the recommendations on using it for electrical, incl static elect issues.
Watch it thoroughly. One other tip: even if things look clear, always place a limiter on your drill bit so that you just clear the substrate you're drilling, and little more. You can always push in a small plastic rod if you wish to double-check if anything is relatively close to the substrate where you just drilled.
