It's easy to forget how good some of the England players of this era really were. I mean Francis, Woodcock, Keagan, Shilton, not to mention the footie genius, John Barnes, who was to follow. Amazing that there was such a drought when it came to cups and medals.

Greenwood oversaw a mismanagement of the England team..He did not pick either Peter Barnes or Cunningham for the European championship and was effectively playing a too narrow midfield (he would drop Bryan Robson from the squad as well which when they played Italy later that Summer cost them as Robson could have helped Wilkins reinforce the Midfield space instead they got more and more overrun in the match)...

England,my child! İ have never seen as beautiful players as it was like in these years for along time. i met england national team and english football with this uniform. When i was a child in my eleven years.those were the days how time flies.a few days ago,i watched a video about chriss waddle and i could not believe in my eyes so that i was not nearly recognise him because he has had physical changes on him howeever i can remembers him in a poster before 1986 world cup. The players who played for england before 1990 or until 1990 world cup or european champion cups were very capable and skillfull.they were like film stars.for example, chriss waddle, gary lineker, tony woodcock ,john barnes, des walkers... İ wonder whether i drink a cup of coffee with chriss waddle or glenn hoddle one day in the future or not ? İ do not know or i am sure i will not do it forever if anyone who writes comments here or is close friend to waddle, let say him my best regards and let say him my wish to him. Maybe he reads these lines and feels sorry ...

This was the game which had fans in England thinking we had a serious chance of doing something in Euro 1980. Alas, Trevor Francis did his cruciate prior to the finals and we were never quite the same. David Johnson was next in line and despite scoring twice in a pre tournament friendly vs Argentina he was no Trevor Francis. Another case of what might have been.

They were a bit unlucky in Euro 80, had a goal disallowed by Woodcock at the end of the match against Belguim that would have given them the win and beat Spain in the final game...only narrowly lost a match against Italy with a goal a few minutes form the end ..If the Woodcock goal had stood they would have progressed..

When I just search again about the Euro 80, especially the group stage of England, I couldn't imagine England faced Italy that had famous cattenacio system organized by their libero Gaetano Scirea and Claudio Gentille. They also had stylish playmaker, Giancarlo Antognoni and striker Roberto Betega.

One of England's better performances but against a very mediocre Spanish team as they proved that summer in Italy. I'm afraid it has to be accepted that a lot of these players and others people have mentioned were not up the very highest international standards, (even though they played very well for their clubs and 'looked' good) which is why England always failed when it came to the crunch. When the English game became based on physical and moral qualities in the 1950s that was the start of the slippery slope. How the league is, so goes the national team. English players were used to power and pace and high crosses on a Saturday and were unable to adapt to the more sophisticated international style on a Wednesday. They always struggled at home at this time as well to a useful continental side with an excellent libero and a good goalkeeper. A deep, defensive organisation coupled with not being afraid of physical contact and working hard baffled them.

@@damianmcdonagh7908 Thank you very much Damian. I have been watching football since 1972 (I don’t much now) and have always tried to be objective. England fans tend to be tribal and think that their favourite players are better than they really are, and media ‘experts’ confirm this for them and thus, it is that myths are preserved. I know because when I was young, I fell into this trap myself at times. I actually think that England winning the World Cup in 1966 was one of the worst things that happened to English football in the long run as it convinced people England did not need to change their style to keep up with their European counterparts who were evolving a more skilful style e.g. West Germany, Holland etc. Of course, this would be heresy to most fans, and I would be run out of town for saying it!
I would say though that England in the 70s and 80s were capable of much better if they’d had better management but Ramsay and Revie had their problems and I don’t think Brian Clough’s blunt management style, would have worked with a group of highly paid experienced internationals but who knows. Ron Greenwood was a good choice as he was the one English manager that thought like a continental, but he was past his best when appointed really - the job came years too late.
As an afterthought consider this the next time you hear an England fan moaning at the next tournament. England’s record at international level is on a par with Sweden and Belguim, but you wouldn’t expect them to be challenging every 2 years would you? The Swedes have finished 2nd, 3rd (twice) and 4th in the World Cup. They have been semi-finalists once in the European Championship and have also won the Olympic title. The Belgians have finished 3rd and 4th in the World Cup and 2nd and 3rd in the European Championship. So perhaps we should think of ourselves as somewhere between Sweden and Belgium, although I know that wouldn’t be popular with the England Supporters’ Club!
      Keep enjoying the game.

İ am 51 years old and live in turkey. İ have had sadly years since i supported england national team, since i met england national team.the main problem of england national team is that england has not talented players who can dribbling, has technical skilfull players in midfield area. one glenn hoddle ,one chriss waddle, paul cascoigne are not enough for a real success. At least two skilfull players have to play at the same time. So untalented players play in the middfield that they can never take england to upper level. İf untalented players play in midffield you lose the ball easily and quickly so that you have to show greater effort to gain the ball back.the result it makes you tired.the second solution is that in the middle of defence area has slow and untalented players.now i want to ask you all a question: which players where played in the middle of defence area faster and more skilfull than mark wright and des walker who played in 1990 world cup???? The answer is nobody!!!If the number of your players who do Dribling is more than the success is so great. By the way, england has never had a goalkeeper.
