I want to see how physicists would respond to this quote: “Do you know why a ship floats, and a stone cannot?” asks Finrod. “Because the stone sees only downward. The darkness of the water is vast, and irresistible. The ship sees the darkness as well, striving moment by moment to master her, and pull her under. But the ship has a secret. The fact that even the simplest and humblest of people can make the world a better place."

Despite deviating in various ways (which at the time was also critiqued by book readers, but they couldn't have foreseen the current film era), the essence has been preserved and the team was incredibly passionate and on a mission to make the best thing possible at the time.

There has to be some adaptation to convert from one medium to another. The constraints of time and production cost are more often the culprit behind these changes than a screenwriters ego. They have a job to parse this down with a cost based lens.
That being said. If you cant cover the costs of remaining true to the underlying thematics, key plot points and general scope of the source material then you shouldn't be doing it.
None of this is relevant to how the machinations of production works though. The accountability to the original is increasingly diffuse the higher up the chain you go. If you look at Tolkien's world. He made an intricate history with languages and lore. And a story to go with that world. Almost as if he intended for people to build UPON that world. Not rebuild what is already there. If they had made their own story, on Tolkien's world without changing anything. It could at worse only be "meh". But when you ruin established characters with badly written dialogues, when the man himself (Tolkien) literally had characters written for a reason, with a reason.
Take this example from Rings of power. Gandalf shows his powers "I AM GOOD". That was cringe as hell. Meanwhile at the end when he says "When in doubt (insert hobbits name), always follow your nose". It was probably one of the best lines in the entire show. That quote is straight from Peter Jackson's movie. And it works because Jackson showed more respect towards the characters due to well written dialogue. Him and his team studied the books, the characters. And they went from there.
Jackson had to re-write shit as well, but he never once disprespected the source material. Which is why the trilogy still holds up today. Two decades later. The only thing i missed from the books were the War in the Shire. The final battle showing the growth of the hobbits as they return home from their journey. I understand why he didn't have it in there, i accept it. But i don't like it. But he respected the source material.

Fans of games have been dealing with this for decades. There are so, _so_ very few quality adaptations of game narratives to other media. I am not even addressing how difficult it is to adapt an interactive media to a non-interactive one -- even when all they do is attempt to adapt the core narrative, to tell the game's main story while removing much of the gameplay-centric sections, they nearly always fail. Both books and games generally have a lot that is removed, truncated or simply changed outright to tell the story the adaptation's writer wishes to focus on sometimes for no real reason. For example the Fallout show had the entire rest of the USA, and the world, outside the established games' narratives to work with but instead dug itself into the most lore-dense region and immediately went about changing existing details. Then there is the upcoming Borderlands film...

This is, in my view, underpinned by a larger shift in culture in the United States and perhaps the West. Businesses are also run to one degree or another by committee; everyone believes their perspective is valuable enough to be included in some way shape or form in the final product, whatever it is.
We have to get comfortable with the idea, the reality, that in some spheres, other people are just better than we are. It doesn't mean their lives have more worth, or that we are somehow dimmed by their flame. It doesn't mean that being "better" extends across all endeavors. But it does mean that when someone has a cracking, lights out good idea, product, or story we should do what we can to facilitate making that thing manifest in the real world in as clean and pure a form as it was conceived by those who created it.
Our constant insistence on "self esteem", which is in its way important, has grown beyond intended borders to encompass the idea that ALL of us are equally awesome at all things so really, why should her idea take precedence over mine?
Keep down this road and you end up with mediocrity and dreck and failure. Step aside from time to time and let the man, or woman, go through. Just. Step. Aside.

Because sometimes it works. Sometimes you get adaptations which are quite different from the original, and either better or sufficiently different and good for different reasons. The issue is that these people think they can produce one of those with committees of talentless hacks pursuing contradictory goals, writing for an audience that only exists hypothetically. They want to change the material to be better, but they don't want to take any risks. They want to write something that appeals to a mythical "average" consumer. They want something different and interesting enough to appeal to a wide audience, but bland and mushy enough to not turn any of that hypothetical audience away. This wouldn't work any better if they weren't adapting things, which is what they've figured out, because if they produce another mindless, mechanical cashgrab with the name of some popular brand from the 90s on it, idiots will immediately forget all the other terrible adaptations and rationalize about how this one will be different, before donating their money to those some soulless bureaucrats who are "ruining" their favorite things from their childhood.

The writing community is super small and insulated. Thing about book being turned into movies is there's only so much you can fit into a film, and all authors want their books turned into films so they can see their stories "brought to life". Production companies and streaming services like Netflix have been studying for years what viewers want, and by average they do not want to be watching the same thing for longer than 90 minutes. That's why you rarely see epic 2.5-3 hour feature films unless they're a massive franchise. Rewind 20 years and half the films coming out were 2+ hours. Now, maybe 10% of films are 2+ hours and 75% are sub-90 minutes. This is also why in the last 4-5 years there's been a massive spike in higher budget series. People are more inclined to return to a long af story if it's broken up to 30-45 min episodes.
I'm a massive fan of reading books and then watching the movies. And it doesn't matter if it's an old fictional story like To Kill a Mocking Bird, or a modern day non-fiction like Unbroken - you just cannot fit the contents of a book into the length of a feature film. It can frustrate me, but that frustration is oddly the dopamine hit i get from watching a film I've read the book of. So I can point out all the stuff they've missed.
George is merely ranting about a pet peeve he's got, but the reality is while he might be a great story teller, he'd be an awful filmmaker. Sure, it's his pet peeve, but it's like complaining about how much winter isn't as good as summer. Like yeah, you've had your little tanty over it, now what can you do about it? Nothing.

Absolutely - most books _need_ restructuring and trimming in order to work as movie scripts.
I think his point was more-so that screenwriters are increasingly misunderstanding their task (or being pressured into abandoning it): they'll miss a story's message, or decide to change it altogether because contemporary politics; add superficial conflict to dumb it down; decide that characters are not diverse enough, not funny enough, not badass enough, and change them regardless of the effect it has on the relationships and plot. I think what he means is that there's an epidemic of unfaithful and unfocused adaptations, because historical revisionism is cool and we don't need to respect authors with outdated values (despite them literally being born in 1880).
Idk, maybe it got a little political there at the end, but I assume he's first and foremost arguing against thought-provoking drama being adapted into dumb action.

I've always been critical of _Game of Thrones_ 's final season. They truly lost the thread, didn't know what to do with the characters most of the time, and tried to Hollywood Ending the thing when the real ending is probably that everyone died. But we'll probably never know, because Martin has zero focus on finishing the books. He'll do anything _but_ write them, it seems. How long has it been now, since _A Dance With Dragons_ ? July 12, 2011 according to Google. Really, George? Almost 13 years to the day now. Will we ever really see the end of this story?
What's also pretty bad is when other productions seemed to try to imitate _Game of Thrones_ . Like _RWBY_ . They did this in their Volume 7 and 8, I think, and it didn't fit that series at all, and also made their lore and worldbuilding fall apart. Not a single character wasn't done dirty, and by the end of Volume 8, both I and my niece had decided to drop the series altogether.

I'm not against fan fiction. Because fan fiction isn't written from a place of insult & disgust for the source material. In fact all the fan fiction writers & artists I have ever encountered in my 20 years of existence were actual fans of the IP, they wrote the fanfic because they have immense respect for the original writer & his/her IP. They were willing to put so much effort & time into the fan fiction because they liked the IP in the first place. They were simply exploring the "What if" scenario with their fanfics. An alternate timeline.
So the problem isn't fan fiction. The real problem are these woke people at Hollywood & gaming industry who hate the IP & they have an agenda/propaganda they wanna insert in these pieces of art. They look at an IP with ill intentions & have no respect for it. They are not fans of the work, they are activists who wanna change it to feel morally superior. They actively insult the real fans of the IP & make everything about themselves.
Basically fan fictions are made by hardcore fans & the community whereas whatever these clowns at Hollywood are making is not a fanfic because these writers & directors are not an actual fan to begin with. Most of them haven't even read the source material. These are talentless people who are just there to get rich off someone else's work & also promote their ideology & propaganda in the process

I mean if you screenwrite... I don't know, a version of Beauty and the Beast and the Beast is a woman instead, technically, the gender doesn't actually change that much about the story.
That is, you know, if you can actually write it well.
But if you write it with the _specific intent_ of celebrating your awesome lesbian couple rather than just being like "hey, how would princess x princess affect the worldbuilding realistically, lemme study medieval France ('cause that's the setting) and ask a bunch of competent historians to make sure I get my lore as right as possible", then yeah, you're just being woke instead of legitimately trying to do something cool. Same if you're trying to make a sci-fi version of it. Like, you can, but at this point just research lore and worldbuilding to make sure you make something that's actually unique. This might be a hot take, but from what I've watched and read so far, I think people would be a lot less offended by adaptations if the writing was good.

Ever wondered why media articles around the world all look a bit similar? Now you have an idea why." ~ Mattias Desmet
This has been taken to a whole new level orchestrated in the West esp. via Uhh Ehhn global level. Not just culture, education in school curriculum is saturated with it. HR/compliance at work is constantly feeding employees "re-education courses they must complete". Its not left they're the immediate blunt tools to do the proximate job. It's global governance in the West orchestrated across the US/EU. The news-media, culture, institutions, politics - the entire edifice is suffused with with what the above quoted author is calling propaganda of totalitarianism.
If you look at the SATURATION of news on tv/radio and paper/web it's for the exact reason of creating a total blanket of propaganda with which to control and shape the population at scale: It's not to inform them at all but to control them.
It's ramped up to prodigious levels recently with so many inserts and perversion of source material even trying to "doctor" words in R. Dahl's children's books "abridged" editions while warping and perverting Tolkien's grand works.
