    Tolkien was a devout Catholic. If you boil down the faith to its prime themes/values 2 things are always present. 1) Service to others and 2) Redemption through sacrifice. Every major character in LoTR hits both these themes. Everything else is just pretty backgrounds and costumes. It's why modern Hollywood doesn't understand and can't reproduce.

    • @criticalcog6363
      @criticalcog6363 6 місяців тому +11

      This is true. In a more generic sense, Tolkien’s work exuded moral virtues and values and dichotomies between good and evil, and modern writers can’t replicate the greatness of these works because they (in a general sense, probably some do) have no moral virtues or values and believe in neither good nor evil and instead live in a gray sea of ambiguity where nothing has divine meaning.

      Lord of the Rings is just our own lost revised history.
      You could literally view it through the lens of ancient astronaut theory, and then everything makes sense.
      Numenor is literally Atlantis. Elves and everything OTHER than humans are ALIENS. And they check out and disappear from literally EARTH for some unknown/said reason
      Plus, the universe of lord of the rings takes place on actual earth. That’s revealed at the end of the story, when one of Aragorn’s descendants in the 17th century finds a way to make it to the undying lands.
      It’s a popular story, because it’s the same one that’s been told over and over because it’s just our history given to us on the silver screen or in a book.
      Tolkien also claimed that he based the Lord of the rings on old, lost and forgotten manuscripts, that he found in the basement of the University that he worked at that was supposedly our own LOST HISTORY.
      You can say it was for marketing, but I do not believe so.
      The same story is told over and over again. It’s told by every ancient culture around the world, as well as every favorite fantasy or sci-fi movie you have ever watched.
      I hope people will wake up to this and know that the world you live in is truly stranger than fiction and utterly amazing.

      @criticalcog6363 George Martin is not religious and made one of the best if not the best pieces of fantasy, earning a name as renowned as Tolkien. I guess he just doesn't exist in your eyes? Religion is important to include in writing because so many people are religious and it is so intertwined with history, but to assume someone can't write a good story because they don't follow the exact same set of morals as yours is quite ridiculous

    • @ElewIV
      @ElewIV 6 місяців тому +7

      @@nickm.4274 The issue isn't that you can't have good writing without religion. The issue is you can't adapt Tolkien's work without his moral themes and modern day Hollywood seems to hate all the morals Tolkien wanted to express.

    The problem is that Lord of the Rings is one of, if not the greatest fictional story ever written, and the fact that Amazon is using that property to make a show that is painfully mediocre if not really bad. It’s just insulting when you look at the source material. Tolkien was an absolute genius who spent his whole life perfecting the world of LOTR to be exactly the way he wanted it to be, and Amazon just comes in and does what they want with it, rather than paying respect to the man who made it.

    The music they are using in these trailers and behind the scenes is horrendously bombastic, it's so Avengers-esque.
    Then he puts on the ROTK trailer and it's just the haunting singing of the Elves. Something which conveys real emotion and is appropriate for what is being shown, even when it cuts to the epic battles, the music remains subtle.

      THIS! I saw an article on my phone about the trailer, so the trailer played mutely as I read the article. And when it showed Galadriel & the others with the camera circling around them, I was like "oh no. It's the Avengers camera spin. why." I personally love the 1st Avengers film, but I despise how everything now has the 'Avengers team-up/camera circle' shot inserted into media for main characters.
      Not everything needs the same filming style. My mind just immediately goes: STOP. IT. Same for your comments on the trailers. I used to love trailers - even if the tv show or movie or whatever wasn't great, I loved the trailers & loved rewatching the trailers. I recently watched Miyazaki's "The Boy & the Heron" in the theatre with my aunt & uncle, so obviously there were trailers. All of us felt nothing with the trailers. The movie was incredible, but we all agreed the trailers didn't make us care at all about them or want to watch.
      It really makes you realize that while styles can change (2005 trailers aren't like 1970 trailers), there is an art & creativity to media & promoting media. Whether tv/film/videogames/etc. and that seems to be getting lost with so much material now. I don't get interested seeing stuff like this anymore. Some videogames still & Electric Entertainment (like Dean Devlin with "Almost Paradise", "Leverage Redemption" etc.) will draw me in. But the other stuff? I just don't care.

      None of these films or series feel particularly like Lord of the Rings, neither are they faithful to the lore. That includes Jackson's trilogy. You aren't going to get Tolkien's decidedly rural and Edwardian sensibilities in any of these productions. That's not even a reasonable expectation.
      There are far more useful things to critique about the show than its strict authenticity to the source material (or lack thereof). For one, it's just not written or directed very well.

    What bothers me the most in both RoP and Star Wars is that writers seem to want to make that world in their own view instead of staying true to tthe source material and portraying that story and telling that story.
    We now get shows that want to do their own thing and use the source material as a general guideline and it absolutely sucks. I wouldn't care so much about the stupid stuff as forced diversity if the actual story was good.
    This is why I do really like the Hobbit movies. Yeah the story got stretched to make a lot of money and it got rushed but in the end it is still telling the same story that was written by Tolkien for the most part.
    Rop is just scfratching everything and mixing up timelines and filling itself with endless LotR references because the studio/writers are so afraid that their own story isnt good enough (ironically) that they feel that as long as they put enough easter eggs in there we are going to think it is good.
    It is an insult to our collective intelligence and a stain on the legacy of Tolkien (and George Lucas)

    Ackshually, Sauron was beaten by an elf in the past. She was even a strong female but she was also half Maiar which may have helped. But aside from her there were 2 more elves who beat Balrogs. The first was Ecthelion who was losing to a balrog called Gothmog, who was basically the equal of Sauron and the left hand man of Morgoth, but still managed to take him down with him. Then there's Glorfindel who killed a Balrog but the Balrog took Glorfindel down with him. So Maiar are killable by powerful elves, not to mention all the unnamed balrogs who died during all the wars. Idk if Glorfindel could kill Sauron but Glorfindel freshly returned from Aman with a couple elf friends probably could.
    Some humans probably could too, like Turin Turambar, who killed Glaurung the father of all dragons, who commanded balrogs and singlehandedly broke the siege on Angband, so he's probably on par with a top tier Maiar at the very least. But Turin Turambar was literally the greatest human warrior ever so I doubt any human after him could stand up to Sauron.
    Ironically enough one of the few people who would have a shot is Galadriel. The Silmarillion makes a big deal about having seen Aman, and Galadriel was born there, not to mention she has royal blood, making her one of the most powerful elves in Middle Earth at the time, although not in the dumb brute way the show presents her as.

    So, this is factual: Halbrad (Sauron) ran because his woman (Guyladriel) said no to him... and he ran home, shifted into a new shape and instantly made his way back to _try again_ to get with her. So Sauron is not just a beta, he is a omega beta, he runs from the woman that doesn't want him so he can disguise himself and do it all over again. Glorious.

Which isn't a bad thing if you want to offer your characters a way to progress from nobodies to heroes and eventually to superheroes or even gods, depending how far you want to push it and what kind of experience you're looking for. When most people think of fantasy they might have that style in mind. But this has nothing to do with Tolkien's heroes. Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Christopher Lee; all very distinguished actors even before the movies came out (well maybe not Viggo so much). Then there are the actors that got their start with the trilogy, like Andy Serkis, Sean Astin and Elijah Wood. Just in this aspect alone there is no comparison between the movies and the series.
