Starting a fragrance collection is kind of like starting a car collection, except a fragrance collection is far more realistic for many people. The bottles are sleek, they're fancy, the pricier or more rare they are the more exclusive they are. You add one, two, five, ten, a hundred to your collection, and they all look so prestine sitting there, and you know they're yours. You can take any one of them you want out for a spin whenever you like. Some are loud, some are crazy, some are daring, some are mysterious, and some are rugged.
And all of those deeply seeded emotions and thought processes are legitimized by an active community just as interested as you are with similar feelings, making the whole idea seem a little less alienating and awkward.

My shopping addiction changes every season or year. One year it was jeans, another year it was horse tack, another year it was crystals, last summer it was trees/shrubs/flowers for the yard, last fall it was makeup and this winter/spring it was perfume. I'm very aware I'm doing it. I do get a rush on ordering online and getting packages delivered and then smelling beautiful. But I do have plenty now and i need to stop shopping!!! I'm not rich but not broke either but things have gone up in price and I need to save more.

I do need to clarify, I mostly bought minis to sample and some dupes and cheapies. Nothing niche or over $60. I got some $ as a bday gift and wanted to spend it on myself to help me feel better as I'm in healing recovery stage from some severe trauma that nearly took my life. I'm grateful to still be alive and wanted to treat myself. But I will admit it can get addicting and I'm trying to stop now.

Well my advice is don't start looking at pens (or Japanese stationery and German note journals).
It starts with the Lamy Safari, the Pentel Energel, or the Faber-Castell Essentio ballpoint or fountain, then you know it you progress on to the premium Staedtler Initiums, at least it did in my case, and who knows where it could end; with £300 and £3000 Mont Blancs, or something like that.
Before you know it you could be smelling of Beyoncé or Paris Hilton fragrances and your garden will look like a tip.

All of this overhyping and over sexualizing what a fragrance an do for you is not true unless the other factors in one’s life such as style, fitness and personality/charisma are properly in place. A lot of people in this community have more fragrances than they could wear in 10 lifetimes. At the end of the day all one needs are a few high quality fragrances that they truly love themselves.

I stopped buying fragrances years ago for these very reasons. I now buy designer shower products, because at least I know I'll use those on a daily basis. Emulating the UA-camrs is a fool's game, especially when they're probably receiving comp bottles to promote, or are actively buying fragrances as a business expense to boost their channel. The hoarder mentality isn't limited to fragrances though. I've been a book addict, a vinyl addict, and now, a synth / music gear addict (we call it GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrome).
Ultimately, it is a shopping addiction, if the act of buying fragrances is where the gratification lies, and you always feel the need to find a new scent.

One of the best videos by any frag reviewer. I started watching these reviewes 6 years ago with Jeremy's chanel. As a result, blindly purchased many unneccessary fragrances during these years, most of the scents I disliked when I owned. Kind of spent few years in an illusional world. I thought more fragrances I owned, the more attractive, confident and well rounded I was. Building up fragrances never helped me to build up the networking or private life. The true fact is, fragrances were unable to gain me a partner, or any status in a society. What's more, a fragrance is one of the most illusional thing to invest money in. One might be wearing 500 usd. Fragrance at an office, yet never be in the center of ladies attention. Such an experience has been almost traumatic if you will. I am avoiding purchasing fragrances at this stage.

Definitely an addiction or more like a phase for me and I think UA-cam has influenced me to have many phases because you have a genuine curiosity for something so you look it up on youtube and instead you’re quickly introduced to this whole community/world of a certain hobby or thing and it makes you want to BUY and/or experience that thing for yourself just to find out it the satisfaction only lasts a short while instead we gotta focus on meaningful things that add value to our lives.

It is actually very healthy to practice a "fragrance shopping fast" every now and then. Finishing old bottle/decants is so satisfying! I realized that spending money on sampling is definitely not a waste, because it saves so many blind buy fails! Sometimes you may not use more than 5 ml of a full size bottle anyway... When I look at my collection, I could easily get ride of 50% of it and not genuinely missing any of those...

    • @TheJofrica
      @TheJofrica Рік тому +8

"Fragrance sampling addiction" is also a thing in itself though. So what you're saying is good too, to take a "fast" and finish all your samples. Samples are not just for seeing how they smell, you can also use them after you analyze them. Here's a tip: When you "finish" a small spray sample, you can often unscrew the top and there will still be some left in the atomizer tube. When you press the sprayer, it will squirt out of the other end so you can really use it til it's completely dry lol.
But yeah, acquisition syndrome and addiction hits hard not just in fragrance but in many other areas. For instance I play guitar and guitar pedal addiction is a thing also. Wishing you the best! Moderation and self-control, have fun still!

It's a tricky one. I too buy quite a few cheapies (mainly ones under £20) and it's easy to do because one tells oneself "this is only a tenner" etc. But you can get a lot of cheapies for the £150 of a supposedly "better quality" fragrance. So even one of those puts one's bank balance out. I think a mixture is needed. Appreciating cheapies (and buying ones you use rather than rubbish) can save you a lot of money. But on the other hand when it's a more expensive one that you really appreciate then it's probably worth it

This is such an important topic that not many are realizing. I stopped getting fragrances about two years in because of how frivolous I've come to realize fragrances to be. Another eights years later and I still own many of the bottles I did then.
Something spurred in me and I've recently come back to this hobby. However it's nice to just discuss and share about fragrances rather than feeling the need to splurge on them all the time.

    Very good video.
    This applies to me.
I have an addictive personality. I have been addicted to all types of drugs. From benzos to heroin.
After I got sober I became addicted to shopping.
Right now there are perfumes that I am addicted to. In the last 3 months I have bought 60-70 different ones.
But now the brakes are on.
I have to find time to use the 60-70 I got.
So now I only buy perfume if it's something I really want.
    But its hard. I want a lot😂
But its not as hard as heroin. And I dont get sick, so its not that bad.
A good smell make me happy😍
Thanks for the video. It helps to open the eyes. 🙏❤️

MrSmelly! Many valid points here. As you surely realized, many of us also figured long time ago perfume UA-camrs are "geeky and dorky" males not to be taken as models in any way. I would like to add a few other observations I made early on 1) Buying perfumes can hardly qualify as a "hobby". 2) People spend their disposable income however they like. 3) People watch perfume channels for inspiration and advise on commercial scents and their performance, not because they need a shrink or an accountant. Other than that, I appreciate your effort in this video to open a dialogue on the mental frailty of many people who expose themselves on social media and those who choose to follow and identify with them.

The outcome here is a balance in life where fragrance adds to your attire and is not the pivoting point of self worth! For those looking for more balance and also where in their life to place more emphasis, look at 'The Wheel of Life' on UA-cam by Tony Robbins. It will change your life if you act on it. I myself have a collection of over 200 fragrances and I was about to order another but I should stick to my original plan. Order only on my birthday and only to a budget that is easy to afford. Even people who use the Wheel of Life need a nudge/reminder. Thank you.

I got out of my addiction by recognizing the manipulation behind marketing. I'm shamed to admit I fell under their spell. Red flags for me were: discounts are very low. Realization these people are in sales, and influencing is a skill to be successful in sales. They collaborate videos with one another, so they refer you to their friends channel's. It appeared some of them were reading from the script. I could tell by eye movements. They could really not like the fragrance but what they do is list two fragrances they are not a fan of, to make it seem their opinion is really honest. But they're just pretending to love the scent because now they created an intrigue. Intrigue is where it starts.

I started my interest in Fragrances at the start of the pandemic and lock downs ironically. Before that I always had one signature scent for years. After just watching a few videos on UA-cam I ran out and blind bought the most hyped and talked about fragrances only to be disappointed, there they are collecting dust! I learned a lesson never to blind buy and always sample. Sampling cured my urge to buy more full bottles. 120 decants in 2 years and I finally know what I really want to get. I’m waiting for good deals for a wish list of around 10 fragrances.

Not to be too redundant with all the positive comments here, but you really did speak a lot of truth in this video, Mr. Smelly. Heck, based on your intellectual integrity alone, I'm an instant subscriber. As for my own collection of fragrances, I've certainly bought too much, but there is an upside to that. Before I started really collecting, I found that if I wore a fragrance for more than a day or two, I'd get really tired of it -- sometimes enough that I'd never go back to it. Having a large collection ensures that can never happen. That said, per your suggestion, there are some lonely bottles that deserve more attention than they're getting. And yes, it's like getting a new fragrance, all over again. Cheers!

This is precisely why I haven't purchased a fragrance for myself in well over a year or more. There are Facebook groups where people will post about buying literally every fragrance they come across and everything that smells good to them. Maybe I just higher standards than those people or something but that vast majority of stuff I smell is just okay at best and even if it absolutely floors me in how amazing it smells, I have the maturity to know there are far more important things to spend my money on. That being said, I do spend a lot of money on perfumery materials to make my own fragrances lol.

I think a lot of people who say they are addicted to fragrances don't really understand addiction. I see a huge difference between my indulging in my impulse to buy fragrances at rack stores or even expensive ones from the Louis Vuitton store, and the way I used to use intravenous drugs, specifically opioids, like Heroin and fentanyl at the end.
The last time I used any hard drugs was December 17, 2018, when I woke up on the bathroom floor with a needle still in my arm. I wasn't even strung out again yet at that point, but I was already just done with life.
I'm still not sure if I was literally trying to end my own life, or just recklessly getting high. I know that I was in a really bad place. The reason that was an addiction is that it caused severe negative consequences on my life, and I kept using it anyway. I was both addicted and physically dependent. When I was strung out, dope was my only concern in the world. I would randomly leave work to go score, lying and saying I had a Dr appointment, and shooting up in the grocery store bathroom and passing out for like an hour or two, getting payday loans and car title loans so I could keep using. It was horrible.
Things have not been easy since then. My dad died just over two years ago, a week after my ex fiance's grandma died, so we went to both funerals together, just for her to ghost me a couple weeks later. We got back together a few months ago, but she already ghosted me again.
I've really been using fragrances to help with my low mood and anxiety. I think it's been helpful, and I started exercising a couple years ago, and got in shape, and I got my nipples pierced because my ex said that would be hot.

One thing i do that i think really helps me so i don't overspend on perfumes is that whenever i want to buy a new fragrance, i get the travel size first. Those last me a decent time and that way i can really try it out on my skin without spending a fortune. Once i've gone through it and i do love it, then i'll buy a full sized bottle but really only then. I found it also helps having perfumes with specific purposes. Like i have 6 perfumes that i keep as a staple: One for the cold and dry winter months, one for very hot and humid weather, one for date night, one freshie i can wear to the gym and also use after the shower, one i wear to bed and one that's like an all-around one that i can wear to work or go grocery shopping but i can also wear it if i'm going out to eat, etc.

    Think about it.

PS: Figured out a long time ago as the frag head that i am that the only way to make sure this hobby doesn’t get out of control is to cap my collection at 100. For a fragrance to come in one needs to go out either sold given or used and i can’t buy more than 3 new fragrances a year(not including backups for discontinueds or frags am about to run out of). At this point i think i’ve created the most optimised collection i can based on my tastes as it is quite a chore, painful even, to work out what needs to go, if at all, assuming i’ve found something i really really really like.
