      Gettysburg always bothered me with how bloodless the battles were. A wasted opportunity (which I know was because of the limitations of broadcast television in the 90’s).
      But it truly died for me when God’s and Generals came out and heavily supported Lost Cause mythology.
      Its legacy is ruined and it should be forgotten in place of other films that are truer to the horrors of war and less damaged by associating with Neo Confederate propaganda.

      Everything from "the Confederate generals wanted to end slavery", to "the rampaging, pillaging Union Army", and, of course "slaves were happy, and treated well".

    But a huge problem in Good, Bad, and Ugly. Notice that the men (except for Tuco) wear cartridge belts, with cartridges in the loops. However everyone is using cap and ball revolvers (which are loaded with loose powder in the revolver chambers ignited by copper caps containing fulminate of mercury and placed on nipples at the back of the cylinder). The problem was that the US Patent Office had allowed a man named Rollin White to patent cylinders bored all the way through. The patent was licensed to Smith & Wesson, which only made pocket revolvers in .22 short and .32 rimfire during the Civil War. Not until 1872 did the patent expire and Colt was able to design its famous revolver for centerfire cartridges.

    • @markw4907
      @markw4907 3 роки тому +1

      Colt was always able to produce cartridge revolvers, simply chose not to do so for legal reasons. The 1861 Prescott revolver is an example of what was possible and the .44 Bacon revolver would have been the most powerful cartridge revolver of the war. Rollin White went broke defending his patent, btw. It is enough that TGTBATU used open top revolvers, many of them being period correct, so much better than Hollywood.

      I file that under NOBODY CARES. If you need to get that technically minute to enjoy or not enjoy a movie, take up another hobby. Even most of the soldiers who fought in the actual American Civil War would not be hung up on the minutia of a weapon like that so why should you? Your "huge problem" is a TINY problem.

    I really belive that The Horse Soldiers should be om the Top 10. I realize that as an older film this may not have the same feel as newer movies, but the battle scene is very good. I don't think The General should be included, not because it is a bad film, but because it's depiction of war isn't that great. If you think a comedy like this belongs on the list, then why not Whistling in Dixie? That actually has a very good battle scene.

    Around 1968 in North County Dublin Ireland at the age of 7 my school organised a fund raiser showing a movie in the gym hall after hours. It was a Schilling to get in (about 10 cents). The movie was Shenandoah and i was hooked on the Civil War forever. I've read about it, studied it, visited Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Stones River and more. In Sept at age 62 I'll visit Bull Run, the scene on the first card in the Civil War card series from the late 60's. I still have that card collection. And that's all i gotta say about that..... in my best Southern accent!

    Glad to see both Shenandoah and The General in there, as well as the Horse Soldiers. I've seen 'Birth of a Nation' - the first half, with the battle scenes, is a great movie. I couldn't believe the second half was made by the same director, it was just so awful!

    • @michaelpalmieri7335
      @michaelpalmieri7335 2 роки тому

      I've seen "The Birth Of A Nation" several times and you're right about the second half being so bad. I mean, showing the black people as the villains terrorizing the white Southerners and portraying the Ku Klux Klan as the heroes, when we all know that just the opposite was the case? WHAT A JOKE!
      No wonder this film wasn't on the list, and I assumed it would be, since it's still considered a cinematic masterpiece (especially, as you pointed out, in the first half depicting the Civil War) despite its racist themes.
      One could liken it to "JFK" (1991), Oliver Stone's personal take on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (11/22/1963), because it too was praised as a technically excellent movie, but was also criticized for mixing historical facts with fiction, thereby presenting an inaccurate view of the death of the President and the alleged "conspiracy" behind it. Among other things, it depicted New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison (who prosecuted New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw for complicity in the assassination) as a modern day David fighting the Goliath of conspiracy and government cover-ups in his efforts to learn the truth about what happened in Dallas, Texas, on that fateful day, when in reality, Garrison wasn't so honest and heroic, but was in fact, a rather unscrupulous man who threatened and harassed potential witnesses in the case, who supposedly manufactured and/or suppressed evidence, and didn't even bother to make a closing statement to the jury (one of his assistants did that), as Kevin Costner did when he played Jim Garrison in the film. The fact is that the case against Clay Shaw was doomed right from the start, and, not surprisingly, the accused was acquitted of all charges.
      While the murder of President Kennedy left a lot of unanswered questions and the evidence and testimony were full of contradictions, it doesn't prove that Clay Shaw was involved or that Jim Garrison was the "good guy" in this historical event.
      In short, in both "The Birth Of A Nation" and "JFK," made 76 years apart from each other, the filmmaking was great, but the history was not!
