The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is my favorite, and one of my favorite movies. It strikes a surreal balance between realism and lyricism. It feels like an eerie old photograph brought to life. The matter of fact yet poetic narrator makes it feel like real life doesn't have to be overly dramatized, that real life is poetic enough.

The Assassination Of Jesse James is a tremendous movie. People for some reason think its too slow, but I think its perfect in bringing you back to that time in the country. We need a 4K Directors Cut as it is supposedly 3 hours and 15 minutes. That's 35 minutes left out!

Yes I was suprised not to see either in honorable mentions at least. Slow West is one of my favorite westerns. It’s got everything…unrequited love story, an outlaw running into his former gang, his redemption arc, a priest w a sniper rifle in guitar case and the hero dies in the end. Also Bone Tomahawk and Once upon a time in Mexico would make my own list and of course There Will Be Blood !

      Slow west

Jesse James is hands down the winner -- it's a Western story on the empty pursuit of fame as seen from both someone who attained it and someone who strived for it... the novel it was based on (and which the screenplay is largely cut from line by line) is one of the best written novels... ever.

Bone Tomahawk! A western with not so much heroism, but intense scenes. Not under 17!
And the opposite: Lone Ranger! Surely PG-13. But it has it moments . . . .
Oh, neaarly forgot > thanks for the good list.
