I was going to call it "How tourists die in Hawaii but, didn't want to scare people from coming here. This is "White Sands Beach Park". Also known as Magic Sands, Tragic Slams and more. Located on Ali'i Dr. Large surf generally takes all the sand away in the winter. Sometimes in the summer too if we get a large enough WSW swell. There are menacing rocks just underneath that sand. Best know how to go over the falls of a wave correctly or you'll be getting to know our local emergency room personnel. By the way, they are very nice at the ER.
This day we had a moderate SSW swell. Most often tourists neglect to watch what's going on before venturing out into the ocean. Even when the lifeguard warns people they still go out and either get injured or need to be rescued.
When the surf is pounding dislocated shoulders neck and back injuries are common here. Lifeguards had to do a few rescues. Sometimes the fire Dept parks at the street just waiting for the next victim.
Myself, I surfed 3 hours elsewhere that day and was on my way home and decided to stop and get some of the action on my GoPro Hero 3+.
The video starts out in the narrow view. Not as sharp as in medium or wide. Also shot in Protune flat at 60fps. 1080p so, watch at the highest setting. Was hoping for it to look better. Maybe next time. Sun was in and out.
Be sure and subscribe to my blog for future photo and video updates.

whoa look at that blue lava
WE TOTALLY NEED A 10 HOURS VERSION TO PUT IT ON SCREEN AND RELAX!
a livestream of this spot!
I almost drowned here when I came to Hawaii to visit a friends family. These waves are no joke for inexperienced swimmers.
I remember going to that beach for the 1st time, but now im experienced
Actually same, was about 2 years ago. But it’s a long story.
kooks
In late June of 1998 my (then) 12 year old daughter rescued a toddler on the far side of that beach who was being swept out by a large wave while the toddler’s family was not paying attention. A hero.
The sounds of this are relaxing.
My last trip to Kona, we enjoyed "Magic Sands Beach" very much. We played a bit in the surf, but when it got too crowded we just sat and watched. Thank you for sharing- it brought a big smile and I agree with another comment, we need an hour of that shot to relax to at the office :)
***** Stay tuned. I'm working on a series of h2o videos. Just for that kind of relaxing mood. Thanks for watching...
One word to describe Magic’s.. Mental! Never turn your back. Was just 2018 I think I woke up n grabbed the paper n read that a tourist told his wife “one more time before we catch our flight” he got smashed n broke his back. Not hard to do here. Soo crazy sometimes but major good body boarding Cheeeout! 🤙
Magic Sands Beach. It was a five-minute walk from our house growing up.
Nice! tis is a great video just sitting here in Washington in the states wishing to go back to kona. mmmmmm I love Hawaii!
Dylan Hiatt I was just in kona swimming magics last week... and I too am back in Washington dreaming of Hawaii.
Almost died here today, there was a wave that dragged me into another wave, and that wave dragged me into the next, and It just kept going until I was almost 20 ft away from the rocks. Hated it :(
Yep, people have to be very careful at this beach when there's surf. Don't be fooled into thinking its safe by seeing the locals out there. The rip current is strong. Don't end up in one of my videos for the wrong reasons. Thanks for watching...
So very beautiful! thank you!
Thank you and thanks for watching...
THAT LOOKS SO FUN
This is so satisfying
I noticed how wave after wave, pulled the people more into the sea.. I could drown and die in there..
but all it takes is to ride a wave all the way back to the shore again.
@@mr.williams5449 not when there this strong people shouldnt in the waves when it this bad
@@NickyD Yea, If you're not used to waves or the ocean then you shouldn't be trying to swim in places like this
Wow! This looks a lot different from when I visited a couple weeks ago- I posted a video on my channel sitting and painting on the rocks (that are under water in this video!!) in the background in front of the wall.
And this is why I love hawaii
Looks to fun, wish we had these waves in Laguna every day
Wish we had them here every day too. Thanks for watching...
Should have called it "How tourists die in Hawaii." I like that name better, anyways awesome video.
ZettabyteGamer Thanks....It is appropriate.
Exactly, just like Hapuna Beach some days, massive shore break with tourists being scorpioned all over the place. Worthless wave to try to ride for fun, unless fun is broken back and rehabilitation.
Ty Lindberg yeah with their Walmart boards trying to paddle out
The problem is that this is really the only beach in an area with a great many small hotels, and lots of tourists. So when there's sand here in the summer, there are a lot of people here too.
I'm jealous of your view!

Lol😁
There was a big one in Jamaica I am four feet and I was on the shore like in the sand and one covers me in water
I almost died at this beach but i was also being stupid and swimming beyond my ability. I still go back and it is one of my most favorite beaches.
Lots of people get hurt here by not paying attention and like you said, going out in conditions beyond their ability. Now there's a lifeguard tower and they constantly warn people but, few listen. Great beach but, pretty crowded these days. Thanks for watching...
thats happened to me in playa del duque beach a couple of weeks ago
Personally I think this is one of the worst beaches in Kona. Crowded, big rocks everywhere, rough dirty sand, awful showers and bathroom, and locals who hang out on the street getting stoned off their ass all day.
Sounds great to me.
while plenty changes in kona, the ocean seems to be the same...I like that....looks like a robust south swell....just like how it is every time.....
I went to kona and the huge waves were either fun or scary
i live in istanbul and its like this in the south of black sea (well not this blue and cool looking, its dark blue mostly), pulls you to the deeps while youre not noticing youre being pulled. A lotta people died there so city pulled a red cord all over the coasts. like you cant swim over 10 meters if youre not a proffessional.
+Jeff Kohn This beach only got a lifeguard tower and lifeguards within the last few years. Everything is still kind of wild over here but, its changing. If you go not too far out to sea the ocean here is a real deep blue. No sustained rivers or streams on this side of the island so, the ocean is always very clear and colorful shades of blue. Thanks for watching...

+Вікторія Глод Только мой друг - сиддхи. Я в Индии.
Are these waves normal for Hawaii?
and then a shark!!! haha. beautiful I wish I lived there :(
TheWendigo I live across the street from that place :) it’s pretty cool
I knew a guy who was paralyzed in a wave in Hawaii. Not sure where. They are no joke.
Some Kona gold would be real nice.
I was kinda scared to i almost dint make it out while surfing bc I was trap in one wave and then they kept stacking and I lost control and then i just went in circles I almost fell and died and I was being dragged by the current what was good was that I was not too close to it where it had enough power to drag me under water
Tourists renting surfboards and heading into tumbling waves. Have fun in the tumble dryer!
Que delícia de praia!
Yeah, Magic Sands it is.
The winter of '69-'70, Crazy Hawaiian Bruce and I body surfed this break at 15'.
We were the only people stupid enough to go out.
Lucky to have survived.
This vid shows the "beach" with the presence of sand.
When we "did it", there was zero sand.
Young and dumb.
Gap between winter and first big summer swell brought the sand back. Had a few 10+ Hawaiian scale swells this year. Sand is slowly coming back. Yeah, I surfed Lymans the morning of Iniki in 92. We had no idea the storm blew up into a cat 5 and was sending 30-35' waves. Went from 15'-20' Hawaiian and glassy to the 30'+ storm surf in a heartbeat. Had a cop with a bullhorn telling us to come in. Ali'i dr was closed by then. We were already trying to get in before he showed up :-) Took 45 mins to get in the current was so bad. Good times...Thanks for watching...
I can't imagine 35' break at Magic Sands.
I imagine that WOULD close Ali'i Drive.
Earlier that same year, I was sitting on the rock wall, when a waterspout came right down the pier, destroyed the post office and just dissapated.
Things can get pretty extreme on the Big Island.
Iniki waves were washing over the pier all day. Had to be maybe 100 body boarders and surfers surfing a wave right there at the pier breaking up to the sea wall. Never did that again. The destruction here got little to no coverage seeing Kauai was destroyed. Yeah, big extremes here. Tranquil 99% of the time but, when we get something its radical.
Nice pics, but those waves are impossible to ride. Short, choppy no curl or chance to get out ahead of. Looks like fun, however.
sardu55 Yeah, people are all looking for the closeout barrels from the larger sets. You can surf from the outer reef break all the way into the beach on the biggest and best sets. It is fun.
Magic sands yoooo
Great boogie board spot, not so great body surfing spot. its quite dangerous it you get on top of the wave. it will dump you on your head. been there done that
Yep, it lives up to its nickname Tragic Slams....Thanks for watching...
Artsy Chic I was there for 3 months last year, there are times when it is alright for both activities. You have to know what you're doing while bodysurfing there however.
If it's so common, can't they build some sort of support around the rocks to avoid it?
Like a net or something?
Eitherway, what a beautiful sight. Seems safe enough but i'd need to be there personally, hahaha. :)
Eren Jaeger The common injuries are people getting driven into the sand. Even smaller waves can cause injuries at beach breaks. The rocks getting exposed is a natural occurrence that can change by the hour and should be left as is. People need to be more aware. Plenty of warning signs etc... They usually ignore. I'm talking of course about those who are unfamiliar with the beach. It really is safe for anyone with common sense. Big waves here always attract a crowd. Its fun to watch.
lavapix Ahhh I see now. Thanks for the reply. :)
These waves would have a huge RipTide at our beach here in California.
Don't they get Rip?
Amazing shots...
ChooseCarefully Thanks...There is a rip more out to the right. Everyone is staying out of it. If caught you will only go so far unless the waves are extra large, 6 - 10 feet Hawaiian.
I will live on this island one day.
I will be moving back soon!
some serious nasty swell. that dumping wave is one to be avoided, what's the attraction of the beach?
When the sand is there its the best beach in town. When there's a swell its popular for body surfing at the beach break and surfing out at the point. Large stuff like this is best left to the experienced. Tourists often get injured or in trouble from the rip tide or currents. Thanks for watching...
Que lugar mais lindo👀👀❤
This is the total opposite of lava
also can you put more stuff into lava? like a car batterie or a cat?
a cat? ima put you in lava instead hell wrong with u😂😐
dont take humor too serious, thats what my dead cats always say.
lolololol
yo man
Meh about the same as we get on most of the beaches in NSW Australia, nothing special.
Tiny tsunamis :P
if you pause it at 3:10 you can see a kid do I flip
I miss my home. The tourist I can;t watch, stay out.
