Ever notice there is no one who can imitate the way Moon plays. He has so many trick fills squeezed into his playing yet somehow keeps it all tightly timed.
Just a raucous genius that is soloing and filling somehow within the confines of a classic song by The Who. Like an octopus playing the drums. The whole of Quadrophenia is a rock drumming masterpiece .
The only drummer to play perfect chaos. Endless fills, constant beating of his stuff yet keeps everything in time. I could listen to his isolated tracks for hours.
Keith Moons drumming has influenced other drummers for almost 60 years, & he is one of the most influential drummers of all time.He will forever influence drummers, as he was so unique, & unconventional, & he had an immense & raw talent, he changed drumming forever. This isolated recording is such a great example of how adept Keith was, so strong & powerful all around the kit & cymbals, a drumming genius, he had class & style too.
Fabulous, one of the great Moon tracks -- also nice to hear him using hit-hats (rare for him). Anyway you could isolate the drum track to "The Song is Over" -- maybe the best thing Moon ever did. (From "Who's Next"). Thank you for this.
Without this type of behaviour, we wouldnt have known Animal from the Muppet Show. Seriously, he is utterly inimitable. The chrous fills are like rolling thunder from the musical Gods.
Drummers - was Keith playing with two bass drums and a closed hi-hat here? Meaning a hi-hat without an operating pedal basically, just to keep time on?
yes, iam pretty sure he used hihats a lot on quadrophenia. Documentry Pete he was not ok at this time. I believe this is The best album in my opnion from every point of view, mainly drums.
It's a fact that Keith moon was the best drummer in the world in the seventies. His drumming on this album is beyond belief. And no one else comes even close to matching his genius
there's a few drummers from his era that one could argue are better. Bonham, Peart, and many jazz fusion drummers (Billy Cobham, Rod Morgenstein, etc) are on Moon's level if not better. No disrespect, Moon is magical.
@@eliasswift2921 I'm a Who nut and Keith is a hero, but I wouldn't argue with this...much. There are undoubtedly better technical players, as you listed. Keith was a powerhouse and a unique player though. He's my favourite, that's for sure.
@@eliasswift2921 it was his creativity that the others lacked. Same with Hendrix...there were better technical guitar players, etc.but Jimi was magical - same with Keith
@@eliasswift2921 Most if not all of those drummers may be 'technically ' better but their drumming sounds so boring to Moon's. There are v few Who tracks that don't have a kicking and catchy yet almost impossible to recreate drum backing
So unorthodox, so unpredictable, so young, yet so on the money in every way imaginable! Keith Moon was one of Neil Peart's biggest influences! No one can or will ever play like Keith 'the loon' Moon. Some do their best to copy, but none succeed. I love how Moon would moan and groan as he was playing, and you could hear it bleed into the microphones on this recording. Personally, I would take Keith Moon over John Bonham...
We won't ever hear someone play like this again.

I agree. Many, including myself, have tried, but he remains absolutely unique in his ability to drum like he did.

He just burned 3,000 calories.
My favorite Who album.

The drums sound amazing on the normal track. Here , they are unworldly! It's incredible that He reached such heights in 69, 70, 71 and 73 !
Precision in a hurricane. Moon is all over the place BUT his timing remains tight. That is the genious of Moon. Not just raw power and ample fills.
Very well put.
Incredible!!! Love this song!! one of Moons best IMO!! Bass line is insane as well !! Song just kicks ASS!!!
I honestly feel this is the greatest work of art in rock history.
One of the best rock songs ever.
Every piece and body is PURE lead and all working together.

damn the entire song is one long fill, with epic bass runs overtop of it

Probably my favorite Moon drumming.
Greatest rock band because each member was the very best at his craft .
I remember John said he learned to play bass the way he did to keep up with Keith.
They all had to adapt to Keith. He just didn't have the patience for keeping a steady beat or groove. He needed to interact with the song more.
Thank you so much for posting this.
The jimi hendrix of the drums
sounds like bombs exploding, and I’m here for it
It’s like he played a drum solo on every song
The best there ever was.
Magnificent
Hear him screaming in the background
I close my eyes and listen and ask myself, "how could Keith die?".

Yes, I'm pretty sure that he was
Yeah and I'm pretty sure it's the kit he used for TOTP when they did 5.15.

It's interesting. At one point he just stopped using a hi-hat and just put another cymbal in it's place.
He played like 4 drummer's at once ❤
Moooonie!
Nothing compares.
