l'm curious to see Johnathan's thoughts on Lars and the Real Girl (2007). I am convinced that he is on the autism spectrum as opposed to having schizoid personality disorder, or any psychotic disorder. My reasoning is he clearly wants relationships with others, but something is giving him social anxiety and de-incentivizing it more than the implied incentives of having relationships are incentivizing it.

So this is kinda meta, david, idk if you’ll ever see this or any of the cinema therapy guys will see this but david was in a movie about my grandmother. Hulu’s Boston Strangler is about Loretta McLaughlin the incredible reporter who not only was just a general badass journalist covering some of the most important topics but one of the women covering the Boston strangler case in the 60s. Loretta is my grandmother, I got to go to the premiere, meet Matt ruskin and Keira Knightly and everything. David if you ever see this, thank you for helping to bring a piece of my grandma back and showing the world how badass she was, even as playing a serial killer.

"BABAYAGA!" was easily the best scene in the movie. Also his role in The Suicide Squad, while often played for laughs was still filled with moments where you can see his misery, pain, and discomfort with his condition. I remember the scene where he gets up in the middle of the night, bloated and sweaty, and he looks up and makes eye contact with one of his companions and his eyes are filled with this sadness and just exhaustion as he drags himself up and goes to the bushes to purge the dots from his system. It was a moment where I had such empathy for him.

I really appreciate David’s vulnerability in this interview. Being vulnerable in this way is really the key to encouraging others to seek mental health. He was able to turn childhood trauma and struggles into something genuinely positive in a healthy and constructive way, and that's something I, as someone with serious mental health issues, aspire to do. omg, no waaaay. you got david dastmalchian, THE DAVID DASTMALCHIAN on your show 😭😭😭❤ y'all have NO idea how much this man meant for little 8y/o me. he and heath ledger were one of the reasons why i became so interested in theater and acting. we all know how impressive heath was as the joker, but david made my heart beat in excitement.i was in such awe that i wanted to become just like him! (obv the actor part, not the actual character 😂) often i even skipped forward to or replayed the scene in 5:03 just to see his performance again and again and again 🤭 now that i know more about and did some acting myself, i understand just why i was so impressed. david has such a huge talent in conveying multi-layered complicated feelings. he is one of the few actors i can actually differentiate between the actor and character and the character still feeling very real and organic/natural even tho some of his roles were definitely inspired by his own life. many big sceen actors feel like they're just playing themselves but in different settings. i'm not saying they're bad actors, they're actually really fcking great, but david dastmalchian just never feels like that whenever he's acting. or at least not for me. sometimes i wish i became famous, not bc i actually want to, but my god it's one of my biggest wishes to act beside him in something and tell him personally how much he changed my perspective of acting and how much he means to me. who knows, maybe if the whole studying education thing doesn't work out, i'll pick up acting again 🤭

I think you could say that David is at the front of the pack of the new generation of our best character actors. He's always so compelling, and he's just great in everything. We've kinda gotten past the "prime character actor" stage for guys like Giamatti and Buscemi and JK Simmons and actors like that, but I think David is absolutely picking up that torch and running with it. He's arguably the best in the new generation of kinda weird, quirky, a little different performances. So looking forward to what comes next for him and I think he's absolutely good enough to eventually get a couple Oscar nominations. He's just such a compelling actor.

I didn't know who he was until afterward. Everyone kept referring to him as the Ant-man guy. It's so cool seeing how all around of a good guy he is. It's crazy how many big movies he's been in but he's just now getting recognition for his talent. I just saw him in Late Night With The Devil, his first leading role I believe, and he is definitely a capable leading man. He's going to be nominated for an Oscar in the next 5 years. I firmly believe it.

Every once in a while you see an actor who's simply amazing from the start. I had no idea that the Dark Knight was his first movie but I remember his acting as if it was tattooed in my heart. I've loved him in every other movie I've seen him since...
    Thank you for this!

This was fascinating! Thank you, David Dastmalchian, for talking about your movies, your process, your history. You do incredible work.
Never realized The Dark Knight was his first role, 'way to come out swinging' indeed. Thomas Schiff really stuck with me, and I'm glad Nolan + co called him back for that.
This was a great interview, can't wait to hear about Polka Do Man, too!

Hope y'all talk some about his role as Murdoc in MacGyver (2016), it was my introduction to his wonderful acting and I would love to hear the psychology behind a character like Murdoc!

I can't wait for you to bring David back! This was such a fascinating deep dive and I love how open and honest he is about his life experiences. I'm similar with being very open about my mental health and trauma history, my experience with SH addiction, etc so it's refreshing to see that reflected in someone who is in the public eye and, thus, hopefully can break down the stigma more about discussing these things openly.

This was a real surprise. David is incredible in the little parts he usually plays, it doesn't matter if he has one line or five, he delivers. It's awesome you guys got him to participate on the show and I hope he comes back to keep sharing. :)

I’ve just been catching up on some Psychology of a Hero videos, and I really think since the new Guardians that Rocket would be an amazing contender for this series - also so would Bucky Barnes, I think his journey is just amazing up until now, especially Falcon and the Winter Soldier!

I remember, as a teenager, watching The Dark Knight and being absolutely enchanted by David in his scene. I don’t know why, but I was. I watched that movie a ton, and it was quite the obsession for a while, so maybe that’s it, but I also remember thinking “I want to see him again. And I want to see him do even more”
I am kinda proud that teen me knew real talent when they saw it, and so happy to see a talented actor get a chance to show everyone his drive and love for performing ❤

It’s so important that it portrays that those carrying mental disorders are more likely to be victimized, and that neurotypicals often react so severely to any strange behaviors if they already have the mindset of trying to prove guilt. It’s so easy to convince yourself of something you already believe, and get frustrated and even violent if you can’t find hard evidence.
