It really speaks volumes about David's acting talents that he portrays many characters who are antagonistic or deranged, yet he's very enthusiastic and friendly in interviews. It's always fun hearing about his career and experiences.
To begin loving yourself, you first have to take little steps to appreciate yourself and like yourself. Take care of yourself and keep in mind we only have one go at this thing called life, so don’t waste it hating yourself.
"Grief can be almost a feeling of possession. It's so hard to feel safe in your body, especially if it's traumatic grief, no prep time grief."-David Dastmalchian. He is one of the most self aware and vulnerable actors I've ever heard. Thank you! 🙂
I love seeing David's natural mannerisms. He reminds me so much of myself - closing my eyes or putting my hands on my face while speaking, especially with difficult topics like trauma or heavy emotions.
David Dastmalchian is one of my favorite actors. Ever since I saw him Batman, I've seen him pop up more and more and he's always intrigued me. It overjoys me to see that he's human, that he puts in the work, and that he's arriving at a place of peace and self love and acceptance. I don't know that you're reading this Mr. Dastmalchian, but you've inspired me to start therapy. Hopefully someday I'll arrive at your state of peace.
I’ll be honest- I don’t care that much about David’s acting career or who he portrays. I care HOW he is and WHO he is as a full person. He is really wise and genuinely caring. That last bit was amazing advice. I love it.
David is sharing himself with the world through his work. Similar to many, many terrific artists, he's sharing his story. So much respect for this man and our therapy dads for giving us such a treat. I love both parts and I hope you guys continue to break down other actors characters. I wish to meet David in person someday, I'm sure he is a fantastic person.
As someone trying to get into a therapist for five years I finally found one! I am so excited and happy to try and get to the bottom of all I am trying to get away from. I have no words how much CT and David have meant to me over the last few years. Thank you
There are some actors you are simply drawn to and for me, that’s David. Thank you, David, for using your gifts/talents and sharing them with us. Big fan from Denmark 😊🇩🇰
@@CinemaTherapyShowAny chance we get a "Therapist Reacts" video for Late Night with the Devil at some point? I saw it a few days ago, and there's DEFINITELY some meaty psychology to dig into
David Dastmalchian deserves all the roles. He makes everything he's in better, no matter how small or strange the role. Just a wonderfully unique talent.
Thank you for changing David from an actor I like to a person I love listening to. What an incredible person! Thank you for sharing some of your story in these episodes
I love David so much. The more I see of him, the more I admire him. I especially love how aware he is of the audience, and how careful and compassionate he is towards us. He is a beautiful human.
I have to say, the roles he plays are quite interesting. He's slowly going from supporting actor, villain, to leading actor. I'm waiting for Late Night With The Devil!
Omg, David is BACK!! Seriously, the way you two extend your knowledge, experiences and emotions to us is slowly reaching to actors like David Dastmalchian. I can’t wait who else in the film industry will be captivated by what you guys do.
Honestly David is such an inspiration. It means so much to me that someone in the spotlight can talk about these things and show people what it's like to heal and grow from trauma and mental illness. In a genuine way.
I rarely, if ever, use the word "genius" when talking about actors. In this case, however, I think I'll agree with you. For actors, it usually just goes "skill" and "talent"; but with David Dastmalchian, the "genius" is actually justified. He never ceases to blow my mind.
I lost my mom in April of last year and have been struggling with the fact that Not only was she verbally physically and emotionally abusive but she traumatized me so badly that left me with PTSD this channel has brought me lots of help for that

David, dropping casually, killing himself. Thank you for staying. There are so many people looking at that as an option. To see someone that is both successful and in therapy is very important. Thank you, again.
David is so damn talented and an awesome inspiring human being! I also love how open he is now about his therapy journey and sharing it. Having suffered from depression for most of my life now and finally making the leap to see a therapist again last year, I still sometimes struggle with being open about my depression/struggles and to see others like him do it gives me courage so, thank you very much, David 🥰

David has become one of my favorite actors. Loved his movie Animals. He's deeply intelligent, feeling, and so talented. It's great to see him getting more recognition.
I like that he calls it a "no brainer", while many people above the age of 30 struggle with the fact that they are still affected by their childhood and their parents, *while also trying to be a parent* 😅
I want them to do this again but this time look at his character Murdoc from Macgyver. That character is next level. And my favorite David Dastmalchian character.

Cool seeing him on the channel again. Also shout out to him for being from Kansas City. Clint’s Comics back in the day was the best 😂 Also thanks for covering his career and characters and diving into his characters. That was really cool.
David is just adorable. He's also incredibly talented, and has a level of self-awareness that I deeply envy, though he's definitely put in the work to get there. I'd seen several of his films before his first appearance on your channel, and after that, I immediately checked out all the others I could find. I'd sign up to your patreon just for the longer version of this, but my finances are about on a par with my mental health at the moment (ruling out both patreon and therapy). Man... how can someone with abandonment struggles get into acting with SOO much no call backs, no knowledge if you get the role. That had to be a really tough path... I'm happy David's finding the help he needs and he is a great actor indeed. Such a path, such an up hill battle
Got to see Late Night With the Devil last night with my wife and it was extraordinary. Dave Dastmalchian proving once again that he's one of the hardest working men in Hollywood with a performance that rides the line between tragedy and absurdity. Excellent supporting cast, pitch perfect period detail, treacle black humour, and an unexpected "oh, that's who that was" moment courtesy of Michael Ironside.
"You can get lost in the abyss very quickly, and it's not just dangerous. It can be deadly" 😵💫 YES! I've never seen this movie but it's going on my list now, because the way this family was described starting around the 22:17 time stamp feels exactly like my house growing up. I have an entire family compromised of that type of brilliant mind that's highly prone to turn against itself in older age, or after severe trauma. Lots of police officers, detectives, combat engineers, and creative types. We're slightly eccentric and proud of it until someone ends up the hospital or is diagnosed with dementia 🤦 During the pandemic I watched two loved ones descend into really dark places far past my ability to help them safely. They never bounced back and it's heart breaking. I work with a therapist who has known me for many, many years so I'm okay. But I often wonder where that tripwire is that people I love keep crossing over, and am I doing enough work to ensure I don't find it. One thing has become surprisingly clear though... because of growing up with a mother suffering from mental illness, I instinctually developed some rock solid reality testing of my own from a very young age. It's amazing how we learn to adapt to our environments. This was a great episode 🙌 Gave me lots to reflect on and think about in a different way.
I've long wished you'd do a series like this for directors!! Ones that have a distinct movie style they make that go back to the same psychological themes!!
We're working on it. Also, check out our episodes about _V For Vendetta_ , _Little Miss Sunshine_ , and _A Good Person_ . We had the directors of those films on!
Thanks for the extra video! Really enjoy your deconstructions of films that most people enjoy without necessarily thinking about afterward e.g. romcoms and films labeled 'kids films'. They have a huge impact on us, be it consciously or unconsciously, and it is interesting to discover the values and lessons buried in some, good or bad. For example, it was really surprising to find out that the original Disney "Beauty and the Beast" is actually a healthy relationship, while the one in "Pretty Woman" is not. The latter film made me uncomfortable as a teenager, and your analysis really helped me figure out why
I am in love with David, he's amazing. Handsome, sensitive, talented... just wow ! I'm just sad that his character didn't last longer in Dune :c Very emotional episode, thanks @CinemaTherapyShow ♥
Yay! Another David D ep!! Tell him I enjoy his work and I really love his opinions and thank him for putting himself out there and raising awareness of emotional pain. I find a lot of relatability to his words
David is for me one of those actors that just jumps out at you in every even small role, to the point where he becomes That Guy and you have to go learn his name. I've been waiting for Late Night with the Devil also was happily surprised he was in Last Voyage of the Demeter.
I've loved David ever since I saw him in the first "Ant-Man" movie. I also loved him in "The Suicide Squad" and was excited to see him in a small, but excellently performed role in "Oppenheimer." I don't have the amount of trauma in my life as David has had in his, but I'm in a very long and complicated assessment to get into an organization that offers psychotherapy for seniors in the New York City region. Listening to him speak about how therapy has helped him makes me feel more confident in my choice to find a good therapist. P.S. I manage a psychiatric practice and work every day with people who have many more issues than I will ever have. I love being able to help them as much as I can.
I became a huge fan of David’s in a weirder path: his role as Murdock on MacGyver, and as Abra Kadabra on the Flash, one of the best villains on that show and should have had an entire season, but I bet Dastmalchian was a bit busy for that.
Guys, wonderful episode! Could you please do Villain Therapy on Coriolanus Snow from the recent Hunger Games movie as well? It would be really interesting to see your perspective on it.
I appreciate his boundary drawing over not using his work as therapy. That said, I ended up in a production of Into the Woods after an incredibly difficult year that included a miscarriage and it was such an incredibly helpful experience. I played Cinderella, so I had some distance from my actual grief (the Baker's Wife might have been too close), but it gave me a space to process the ugly feelings of random suffering and sudden loss. I found out I was pregnant again at the end of the show, and I'm so thankful I had that time to use art to work through my feelings. Pregnancy after loss is always complicated, and that was no exception, but I was in such a better place because of my acting journey on that show. All that to say, boudaries are important, AND acting can be therapeutic, if the environment and material are safe and healthy.

That’s a sweet anecdote
I became a huge fan of David’s in a weirder path: his role as Murdock on MacGyver, and as Abra Kadabra on the Flash, one of the best villains on that show and should have had an entire season, but I bet Dastmalchian was a bit busy for that.
Guys, wonderful episode! Could you please do Villain Therapy on Coriolanus Snow from the recent Hunger Games movie as well? It would be really interesting to see your perspective on it.
Yes!
wouldn’t miss this like for the world
Late Night with the Devil was a very cool movie! Enjoyed it greatly.
Would you consider doing "Harvey" or "Arsenic and Old Lace"? That would be SO fun!
Everyone should go see Late Night With the Devil when it comes out, I saw it at a film festival in October and it's great. David is phenomenal in it
