I'm currently in a place where depression and chronic pain have been keeping me from doing much of anything, and am just lucky enough to have a family that wants every kid to live at home so they can save up for a house. But while being unemployed for quite a few months after a back surgery, I've completely realized I want to tell stories, preferably as a writer. Movies, TV, Comics, Games, anything like that (writing actual novels is something I really want to do, but I'm just not on that level of ability yet, and sort of feel like it'd work best if I co-authored with someone who I could bounce ideas off of and have them tell me I need to write). Where do you even start with this stuff when you're 30, don't have any backup plans besides getting whatever entry-level job is available, and hadn't made anything before? Because I feel like I could write some good films or graphic novels, but where do you go to learn about the industry and apply for jobs. If it helps, I am actually a short commute from NYC. Do I just go to places I'd want to work and hand out resumes and portfolios of scenes I'd written?
Omg same! I heard her voice and I wanted to scream! I love Karen so much!!! I watched her as Amy Pond as a kid and it’s been so wonderful to see her in other roles too!!!
"Vincent and the Doctor" is an average to good _Doctor Who_ episode until that ending and then it just breaks your fucking heart but also gives you hope. And Gillan makes that. THE ULTIMATE GINGER!!!!
When she said "Acting is reacting" it reminded me of what Matt LeBlanc said as Joey Tribbiani in the TV show FRIENDS in a special episode where Joey is teaching an acting class and he says "Acting is reacting... this does not mean 'Acting again'."
Haha. I thought of The Good Place, Vicki. Something like, "Acting, is just reacting. And reacting is just preacting. And preacting. Well that's just being." Pretentious gibberish basically.
Nebula is one of the MCU's most underrated characters, and has one of the top 5 character arcs, IMO. Props to the writing of her character, but most of the credit goes to Karen.
Yes!! I could be wrong, but I feel like Nebula is one of the few, at least the one I remember, that actually decided to change and not just responded to the things that happened and then realized was different
What I love about that clip from Doctor Who is that life is not a balance sheet. We don't subtract the bad from the good. Everyone is complex and complicated.
You see that so often in Doctor Who in general. It really does kind of teach you about the reality of the world. That being said, the Vincent episode was so incredible and I bawl at the ending EVERY TIME.
15:57 WOW, the fact she framed her character as the Scapegoated sibling in a narc family system is fascinating and helps me understand the story so much better.
I remember watching her behind-the-scenes video for Guardians Vol. 3 and having my jaw drop when I heard what she actually sounds like. Pair that with a fun, self-aware personality, and you have a recipe for success. For once, it's nice to have a Karen in Hollywood who is a total sweetheart.
Getting Karen Gillan is a massive coup for the show and the choice to use that song from Vincent and the Doctor to preview the video at the start was superb. A massive bravo to the editor/s of this one.
So delighted that you got Karen on this show. I'd seen her in a few episodes of "Doctor Who", but she really impressed me in "Welcome to the Jungle", where she subverted her usual action girl roles by playing a shy bookworm who has to portray a Lara Croft character. Also, her American accent is so convincing, that it's surprising to hear her real Scottish voice.
Doctor who really is the best therapy for me. And I turned 12 when Karen and Matt joined the show, so their era got me through some awful times being queer and autistic throughout secondary/high school... an all-boys secondary school 🙃 the whole show has been my lifeline tbh. But yeah, I couldn't be more grateful for that entire era especially Karen, Matt and Arthur. Love Karen in everything she does. 😊 can't wait to watch this
I discovered Doctor Who when I was recovering from severe bullying in my previous school when I was 12. This show played a enourmous part in who I am now. And how I dress lol (the bowtie concept of "it's cool because it's ridiculous I love it and I don't care" really had me going)
I can relate to that, Doctor Who literally saved my life. I was living the worst period of my life. I had nothing, I was couch surfing, unemployed, semi escaped from my mental/physical/sexual abuser. I was a mess and very suicidal. Doctor who gave me hope and spark to move one day at a time. I still love the show so much. Also I will always be grateful to Amy and Rory's love.
The scene in GOTG Vol 3 where Nebula cries when she learns that Rocket was alive hits so hard, not just because she cries, but because Karen had spent multiple movies giving Nebula so much character and emotion. The decision to cry was probably a director/writer choice, but any actor could cry to make you feel sad - Karen broke our hearts (in the best way) And WOW you guys are really getting the big leagues on this show. Esposito, Dastmalchian, Gorman, various directors. I binged all of the past stuff and its so awesome to see how youve grown. Time to finally subscribe and keep up to date with future stuff
Matt and Karen were my doctor and companion. I cannot put into words how much doctor who has influenced me, I don’t know if I would be the same person without it. It taught me to treat others with empathy, understanding and help others whenever you can. Thank you Karen and everyone else who participated in the making of the greatest sci fi show ever.
I first saw her in Oculus. I won't forget that night, nearly 10 years ago, huddled in a corner at a halloween party (maybe not fully sober), watching the movie, being terrified of a mirror because of Karen Gillan's acting. It takes a lot of work from the actors (and director) to make an inanimate object feel terrifying, but she was so good that I'm still scared of that mirror.
That "Good things and bad things" line from Vincent and The Doctor. Such a beautiful way to look at the world. I remember when Karen was announced as Nebula, I was super excited. Karen did such a great job playing her. From reluctant villain to galactic hero, softening but never quite losing that edge. Hope you guys can get more actors on, I love hearing about their process.
Can i also just say - I love that hug the Doctor gives Amy in that Dr who scene. Its not just a hug, its the holding the head, its hugging with all his might, the readjusting to keep hugging. Its beautiful.
I thought it was super weird you were doing a Doctor Who ep, considering how broad it is. And it took me a minute of seeing the trailer to realise you got freaking Karen Gillan. Guys that's incredible! Congrats!
I'm so proud of you guys! I remember 2-3 years ago when you were this fairly small channel and now you have all these people waiting to watch, you have Actors, & producers joining your episodes You guys are doing so good !!!
Insane that you got Karen on the show!! That van gogh doctor who scene was instrumental in helping me process my dad's suicide when I was a teenager so it's always been monumentally special to me
“Vincent and the doctor” The ending to that episode broke my fucking heart. From the music and seeing van gogh cry at Just how much everyone loves his work, at how much he’s appreciated unlike in his own time… it’s fucking amazing.
😭In the Doctor Who Vincent van Gogh episode Karen, playing Amy Pond, plucked my heart strings with such skill that I cried-- ugly cried. It takes exceptional ability for an actor to give even the best scripts that much emotional power over the audience. Way to go, Karen.
I’m kind of sad that Selfie wasn’t discussed. I loved that series, and I think it was just a few years ahead of its time. It should have been a massive hit.
Karen mentioned at conventions about learning her character's motives in Selfie. I post updates about the Selfie cast on my page! They still get questions about the show even now. Karen and John met up last year.
U GUYS CAME SO FAR IN YOUR JOURNEY WITH CINEMA THERAPY FROM YOUR INSIDE OUT VIDEO TO HAVING FELLOW CONTENT CREATORS AS GUESTS TO HAVING DIRECTORS AND FINALLY ONE AND ONLY THE KAREN GILLAN I AM SO PROUD AND HAPPY FOR YOU
So excited for this actor deep dive! Karen is such a great actor that even though it took me awhile to warm to Amy Pond, it was never because of the choices she made as an actress, she always delivered (I just didn't care for the choices Amy the character makes in regard to her relationship with Rory). And I adore Nebula, the arc she has in the MCU made her the character I was most invested in by the time we got to Endgame. And then seeing her pull off comedy in Jumanji - what a legend!
Oculus is my personal favourite movie of Karen’s, as well as one of the most underrated horror movies I have ever come across. Not just from an entertainment standpoint, but also from a bit of a personal one where siblings undergo trauma and they use each other as stepping stones to overcome it (obviously what I went through was NOWHERE near as bad as that, but it’s just from a standpoint of where I felt seen). I get that Oculus is pretty confronting from not only the supernatural aspects, but also the trauma aspects, but here’s hoping you guys do a video regarding that and trauma regarding siblings. Thanks so much for all the work you do and keep kicking ass!!!!!
Nah man. Y'all worked hard for this and you're making an actual change in people's lives. I think you're allowed to brag, but in a healthy, internet dads approved kinds of way.@CinemaTherapyShow
One of the best pieces of advice my acting teachers ever have me, that can often be hard to follow consistently has to be "you are not acting. Acting is for the stage. On screen you need to live your moments sincerely." I've done films with stage actors who have no screen training and often they forget that they're framed specifically and do what you do on stage, which is move around a lot, often with exaggerated gestures and expressions. Dialogue wise, same thing, as they'll sometimes forget there is no back of the theater you need to worry about. Big reason I love this job though. Only line of work that I enjoy thinking about and discussing and learning when I'm not even working. And I used to be a chef, so you know that means something.
Wow, Jono and Alan, this was so cool! It's so much fun to see you guys get to interview so many huge talents about their work like this, and Karen is such a superstar in every way -- I especially love the way, in every interview, you take care to champion their range and body of work, which has to be so meaningful to them. Huge kudos -- beautiful, moving interview with one of my favorite actors of all time. (The fact that Karen played Nebula, Amy Pond, and Ruby Roundhouse/Martha -- that's Oscar-level range right there.)
Love Karen!!!! Such an amazing actress and lovely person. Amy Pond was one of my favorite companions of all time!! And omg the Doctor Who Vincent Van Gogh episode is one of my favorites!! Absolutely bawled my eyes out when I first watched it. Truly incredible.
I just want to say thank you for hosting this whole show. I don't think there's a relationship in my life that hasn't been improved by remembering and internalizing things from your show. Helped to save my current romantic relationship. Thank you
I say this with love but your thumbnails are not doing you justice for these guest episodes!! It's so awesome that you're getting these guests, the whole world should be running to these videos
Omg, Karen Gillian! I love that they played the song Chances by Athlete from the Vincent Van Gogh episode in the opening montage ❤ that was my very first Dr. Who episode ever and made me fall in love with the series, Matt Smith’s Doctor, and Amy Pond and Rory Williams as my favorite companions. Thank you for such amazing performances!!
Well. I guess it’s time to go watch Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for the 50th time. Karen is amazing!! I didn’t know she wrote her own movies! I’ll be watching those ASAP! She seems like such a lovely person
Man, all the feelings from this episode. Karen's stories, and talking about Flanagan and the heartwarming interaction with James freaking Cameron! She's such a brilliant authentic and genuine person. This whole watch was unexpectedly therapeutic, felt like crying at parts, laughing out loud at others. I'm working on a film project myself, and hearing how long it took her to get hers made as a big Hollywood actress gives me hope and really makes me wanna go out and just like get my project going. Love love love this episode and her as a person. Thank you for all you two do.
Karen Gillan has been one of my favorite actresses since she was on Doctor Who. I'm so happy that she was able to come on my favorite UA-cam Channel. Keep up the great work Cinema Therapy. You deserve the recognition!
I fell into a very heavy burnout with deep depressions. All I could do every day was go from my bed to my couch, watch tv all day and return to bed (and wrestled terrible thoughts). That's when I rediscovered Doctor Who. The Syfy channel was airing the 11th doctor, Karen, Matt, Arthur and Alex. They made me laugh, they made me cry, they showed me life is beautiful and worth living. They helped me through my burnout. I am forever grateful for them coming together and create such an awesome show. I will always love and miss Amy Pond. And ever since, I've been rooting for Karen to have an amazing career. I went to see Oculus in the theatre, just to see how she did in a different part (plus I love horror).
the van gogh scene came up I started tearing up, not just because of the beauty of the scene but because of the situation, Karen on cinema therapy watching a legendary DW scene.... what a journey we are all going through
"Every life is a pile of good things and bad things." Definitely feeling that lately. it's now been over a month since my mom died, still not handling that well.
Her character in the show Selfie truly broke my heart. I saw so much of the parts of myself I tried to hide in that character. It’s what push me over the edge to get help.
While Doctor Who is a relevant topic, I suggest Jon consider checking out the episode Heaven Sent for Mended Light. It's a great, mostly stand alone story about overcoming grief. It's also a solo performance and it's amazing
Haven't watched the episode (just got past the introduction)... wanted to say that Gillan is not only one of my favorite actresses of all time, but one of my favorite PEOPLE. She's simply a lovely person and I wish I could get to know her on a personal level. Of all of her many (MANY) roles, the one that connected with me the most was actually Nebula. I had a rough life growing up and (believe it or not), I see a great deal of my own mental processes and reactions in that character. Bravo, Karen. We love ya. :)
I've been subscribed since about April 2020, and I've loved the content and watching your channel grow and reach more people. I'm thrilled with the guests you've gotten to come on and share this side of what makes them so good at their job. It's a beautiful thing.
@@CinemaTherapyShow You guys have earned it! Never once have I watched one of your videos and been disappointed (except that they end sooner than I want!) I love watching you trade who's leading it off, and the different perspectives you bring to it all. It's a beautiful thing, and I'm thrilled to be one of your subscribers! Thank you for the additional stability you bring to my life and to the lives of so many who watch you!
Oculus was one of the first horror movies I ever saw. I was 14 years old watching with a friend after after her surgery. We had such a fun time! I’ll never forget that day!
Vincent and The Doctor is one of my all time favorites. I remember watching it as a kid when it first came out. Since then I have made a point to try and see as many of Van Gogh's sunflower paintings as possible (for those that don't know there are 7 versions of Van Gogh's sunflowers, I have seen 2 so far.)
Love her! All us Karen's trying to bring good meaning back to the name that has hurt many of us for the past years. I can't give my name at many restaurants because they seat us back by the bathrooms every time. Or use my name online because people subconsciously (probably) attack me as if automatically racist, a complainer, and mean. Most of us (and the Nancys, Debbies, etc) are very nice. KG is amazing proof of that. Great conversation!!
I had read that Karen Gillan was interested in not only playing Batgirl but also directing the movie. When the nearly complete movie ended up being scrapped, my one positive take away was “At least now maybe the Karen Gillan one can happen 🤷”
I got to meet Karen when she was in Doctor Who she is a wonderful and sweet person, sadly I can't be there due to work but ill definitely watch it when i get home

She was my favorite companion, and I'm not sure how much was the writing and how much is because she's just so amazing
1000%!!! It was so special
I met Karen at a con when I was younger. I was dressed as pinkie pie and she said I was a pretty pink angel. I will never forget that.
Pinkie Pie for the win!
When I learned Karen was Nebula; I was mind blown. All I could picture was Amy, the girl who waited. Crazy range-love this actress

Right! I saw her bald online and found out then that she did it to help play Nebula! My jaw dropped! Dedication!
Amy Pond 🫠

Big reason I love this job though. Only line of work that I enjoy thinking about and discussing and learning when I'm not even working. And I used to be a chef, so you know that means something.
KAREN GILLAN??? I'm so excited for this episode, I LOVED her in jumanji and the mcu ❤
So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you
Thank you!
It is good to see Karen getting recognition for her skills as more than a supporting actor.
I say this with love but your thumbnails are not doing you justice for these guest episodes!! It's so awesome that you're getting these guests, the whole world should be running to these videos
Pleasant surprise to see Doctor Who in an episode
That episode of Doctor Who makes me sob every single time! Karen Gillian has such a range, I always love the things she creates/stars in.
She's the highlight of the Jumanji sequels. She's so damn funny and charming 🥰
Thanks so much! ☺️
That was quite the treat! Thank you for having such a wonderful and talented guest on your show! Fun and insightful!
Our pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Just rewatched all of the Amelia Pond Doctor Who seasons! This couldn’t come at a perfect time!
THIS IS CRAZY!! as a longtime karen gillan and cinema therapy fan this is just wild to me
the van gogh scene came up I started tearing up, not just because of the beauty of the scene but because of the situation, Karen on cinema therapy watching a legendary DW scene.... what a journey we are all going through
I love that they used Vincent and the Doctor as the backing audio :D
Karen Gillan is so talented. I'm so glad you guys had the opportunity to interview with her!
"Every life is a pile of good things and bad things."
Definitely feeling that lately. it's now been over a month since my mom died, still not handling that well.
Her character in the show Selfie truly broke my heart. I saw so much of the parts of myself I tried to hide in that character. It’s what push me over the edge to get help.
My page is dedicated to the show Selfie! Karen Gillan still gets questions about the show even now
While Doctor Who is a relevant topic, I suggest Jon consider checking out the episode Heaven Sent for Mended Light. It's a great, mostly stand alone story about overcoming grief.
It's also a solo performance and it's amazing
Maybe I will!
I've been watching Dr Who since the 80a and NEVER EVER has an episode made me weep for joy until the Van Gogh one
Omg omg you got her!!! Congrats Internet dads!
Vincent and the Doctor is one of my all time favourite episodes - always makes me cry though 😭
Oculus is to this day one of my favorite horror movies! It's genuinely so unnerving
Thank you! And thanks for being an OG fan! It means so much.
I'll always love Karen for her role as Amy Pond. So excited to see her on here! Had no idea she's a Director. Love to see the success she's had.
Nice! She is such a talent! Very much looking forward to the full episode! 👍🏻 👍🏻
I could listen to Karen speak all day. Such an absolute delight and Amy was such an amazing companion, easily my favorite.
Thank you for talking about the Vincent episode in Doctor Who. I was waiting for this one. Also, love you Karen!
I liked hear angry nebula face so much. She made bad emotions adorable.
2:47 This part & the earlier part where Vincent is at the museum in this episode gets me every time...
The James Cameron story was just fantastically great. Loved it.
Love it when I see an interview with an actor/actress I've been a fan of forever, and they're an awesome and relatable person in general too :D
Oh, this is gonna be good! I love Karen Gillan.
Ever since Doctor Who, Love her!
EDIT: That James Cameron story was amazing!
Karen is so cool and genuinely humble and just really cool so glad this got to happen.
I had read that Karen Gillan was interested in not only playing Batgirl but also directing the movie. When the nearly complete movie ended up being scrapped, my one positive take away was “At least now maybe the Karen Gillan one can happen 🤷”
I'm so happy you guys got Selfie superstar Karen Gillan on your channel. One of the best gems of the decade.
If I didn't know that Gandalf was their dog, I would've had to picture a sagely old man throwing up on the carpet out of nowhere
14:00 interrupting someone to remark on a cute dog, I am literally Karen Gillan
I got to meet Karen when she was in Doctor Who she is a wonderful and sweet person, sadly I can't be there due to work but ill definitely watch it when i get home
Met her, too, and she's truly wonderful. So beautiful as well 🥺
