  • In this week´s van life video we explore the South of France, visiting various Roman sites and landmarks. We initially planned to visit a city called Avignon but changed our plans due to safety concerns. So we end up exploring the town of Saint Remy de Provance, known for its connection to Vincent Van Gogh, and visit Roman ruins and a museum. Finally we end up in Arles and spend the day visiting an ancient amphitheater and coliseum, despite the rainy weather.

    It's mad that Van Gogh only sold 1 painting whilst he was alive, the other 900 sold after he died. What a beautiful part of France.

      It's really sad that so many artists suffer the same fate. No-one appreciates the works when they can benefit the artist, it's always after they are dead that somebody decides that they see something great in them and can sell them for loads of money and keep the profits themselves. Human greed in it's truest form. ☹️💜🤟

    Well that makes us kick ourselves for missing out on Arles, that amphitheatre looked absolutely huge. In fact as I recall we missed it because we weren't sure we could park anywhere safe there either? So pleased you went and showed us what we missed out on! Loved all of the Roman stuff, you really squeezed loads of great historical sites into this one 😍
    Very sad about Van Gogh, I must admit I wasn't familiar with the tale, though Stephen was. It does seem to be the thing with artists sadly that they rarely get to enjoy the fruits of their creativity - but someone else does instead 🤨
    Loved seeing the house price info in the video, always good to know where you absolutely can never live 😂 Shame about the weather at the end but at least you saw the sea again!
    Much love ❤🤘

      I was disappointed to see that the Roman Arena had been used for bull fighting, but I don't know why I was shocked. That part of France used to be Spain and apparently Napoleon Bonaparte's wife Josephine has a love for it and insisted that it be used for it, with the Camargue Bulls.
      We had fun trying to find a parking spot big enough for Perse, as it was market day too, which is along the main Boulevard des Lices, just outside the main citadel. We eventually managed to find a space in a small free carpark beside Alycamps, to allow us to have smooch around. We didn't stay the night though as we thought it was possible that someone had tried to jimmy the door to our gas bottles. We looked at a few places to stay the night in the Camargue region and all of them mentioned break ins etc, even at night, so we carried on driving until we got to Maury, which is a lovely little park up with all services. You'll see that next week. Really is, we don't have anything worth stealing (other than the sentimental value our babies) but thieves don't know that until they break in. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just not with the risk.
      Arles was a full on day, but we really enjoyed it.
      The saddest part of the Van Gogh experience was that they mention his diagnosis would have been something akin to Manic Depression (I think they call it bipolar now) and most likely caused by the lead in the paint and various other pollutants from his general life. Maybe if he had been born somewhere different, his life would have been much happier.
      We thought of you guys when we saw the inmobiliaria. We often check too.
      Looks like you guys enjoyed the Cotwswolds. Personal favourite of mine (Alison). We used to race powerboats on the lakes at Fairford when we were teens (looks like they've all changed now) but I always loved driving through the sandstone villages. A lot of the places that we've visited recently have reminded me of the area. 😍
      Stay safe, much love Alison and Darren 💜🤟

      @@findingxanadulife that makes sense about the bull fighting for the reasons you said - we didn't realise that used to be Spain but we do recall thinking that area seemed more Spanish than French in many ways. Not something we ever wanted to see for ourselves (the bull fighting) and I wonder if it will gradually wane in popularity.
      Very worrying if it did seem like someone tried to break in 😬 That's definitely what put us off - in the end we stayed in two paid for aires (not quite campsites) in the Camargue, and some of the countryside was wonderful, but we didn't explore much town wise, except Saints Maries de la Mer on the coast. Again, that looked more Spanish.
      The main thing is you found a park up to have a look around and came out unscathed thankfully, and now you've shown us the lovely sites, perhaps we don't need to go now 😂
      Oh that's interesting about Van Gogh - is the paint theory just speculation though? Although very possible, it does seem more likely people would try to find "logical" reasons for such conditions back then rather than exploring mental health properly...but of course it could still be true in this case, or a mix of both maybe! Very sad either way.
      We did enjoy the Cotswolds very much, and glad we could remind you of some of those places and the...stunning (! 😉) buildings. It was sadly short lived there but we need to go back.
      Safe travels guys ❤🤟

      @comealongdear There was a board on the wall in the Asylum that explained what his diagnosis at the time would have meant and the likely causes. They said he was manic depressive and probably suffered from a form of epilepsy. I can't remember all of the suggested causes, but apparently he smoked a pipe almost constantly, drank far too much coffee and alcohol, especially Absinthe which was up to 70%alcohol in those days, lead poisoning from chewing on his paints, malnutrition, and probably suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning from the gas lamps in the houses. He had lots of stomach problems too. Poor chap. No wonder he was miserable. ☹️
      Safe travels to you guys too. 😘💜🤟

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear 5 місяців тому

      @@findingxanadulife yes it sounds like a good case for many outside factors contributing there! Poor man. But perhaps he drank/smoke etc because he was unhappy/unwell. I suppose what I'm saying is even if you removed all those "physical" causes, he might still have had some mental health troubles due to life circumstances, and the substances and paints etc all just exacerbated that. I see he didn't start painting until 27, but he'd suffered a breakdown years before that. But clearly either way, all of the other stuff didn't help. It's a tragic tale but at least we can enjoy his paintings now I guess 🙁

      It's been on our list for a while Matt, but not sure when it will be. I think we were so shocked about how liable for break-ins the Avignon area was, that we just carried on driving. 🤷🏼‍♀️😘💜🤟

    Dutch guy visiting here. Van Gogh is a Dutch name and he was Dutch. But the Netherlands is a cold country (except for summer) and the South of France is warmer and has much more sun/light which is good for painters. Nice video! I saw some new things. One corner was painted that was either because a family corner/mausoleum or dedicated to one particular saint? In any case it's common to have different sections within a church.

    • @findingxanadulife
      @findingxanadulife  5 місяців тому +1

      Hey there Dutch guy. 😬
      We did not know any of those things, other than France being warmer than the Netherlands. We're not used to seeing cloisters, so had no clue. Thank you so much for the information..!

      @@findingxanadulife Thanks! Cloisters are typical of monasteries. I just looked it up. The place where van Gogh stayed is a (former) monastery hence the cloisters! PS I just read he had his own painting studio/room in the hospital which is (if true) amazing imo.

    • @findingxanadulife
      @findingxanadulife  5 місяців тому

      @mradventurer8104 Awesome. The painted cloisters were actually on Saint-Remy de Provence, but the asylum was just outside the village. There are many places in and around Saint-Remy and Arles that he painted. The room we visited at the monastery/asylum complex was meant to be his room. The main complex was to the left of the monastery. There is a painting of the building with the shutters that I recognised. Thanks for looking up the info. 😬💜🤟

    Hi Guys great vid as usual.
    Off topic but my wife and I are considering Van life without being nosy just trying to get an idea of what monthly running costs are of having a motor home without parking & food.
    Hopefully it’s not an intrusive question.
    Thanks in advance and keep up the great travels.

    • @findingxanadulife
      @findingxanadulife  5 місяців тому

      Hi Jay, this is a difficult one to answer. Our biggest cost has been diesel which is controlled by distance and we've recently learnt by gradient. Powering a 3.5t motorhome up a mountain seems to use as much diesel as doing a couple hundred km on the flat where our motorhome is not that much worse than a standard family car for economy.
      Gas is cheap and we are shocked at how little we use, although this does go up considerably in cold weather. Electric is completely free if we want (we have solar).
      However because we can no longer buy in bulk and can't use a lot of our cost cutting, food costs have gone up considerably.

      Hi, thanks for the feedback. To help us understand as we are keen to learn, what exactly do you mean. Is it too loud, too long, only have it during scenery and not while talking or are you suggesting just get rid of it all together?

    • @canzuk4711
      @canzuk4711 3 місяці тому

      @@findingxanadulife It is loud enough to distract from the video, and yes there are small bits of the background music while you are talking. I mean I am sure 99% of the people here enjoy it, (speaking for myself ) it was my humble opinion that's all. I truly enjoyed the video, if it was up to me I would scrap it all together, and rather enjoy listening to both of you instead. PS I am a retired music teacher as of last year, lol.

    • @findingxanadulife
      @findingxanadulife  3 місяці тому

      Thank you so much for clarifying. Being a retired music teacher we presume you have an ear for sound and therefore your opinion really does mean a lot to us and is very helpful. There is no handbook to creating UA-cam videos so we have to rely on outside opinion. We have started playing with music in the last few videos, making music segments shorter and reducing volumes a little, so feel free to give further feedback in the future it will genuinely be welcome. Much Love Darren and Alison 🤟♥️
