Hey, I’m an African American woman and I lived in Ceret for ten years. I have been living in France for 42 years. I am now living in Bordeaux. Nice to see you showing the village some love plus it’s close to Spain we used to go to Barcelona on day trips.
Hi and thank you for sharing your experience traveling around the world. I'm a Black American and I swear it's wonderful to watch so many of my countrymen and ladies traveling the world. I just wanted to wish you well on your beautiful journey. I also wanted to ask if you miss anything about living in the States? Btw I'm also considering moving to France for retirement. It's been a dream of mine to live my life in Europe. And France sounds like a great choice. And that's despite all the bureaucracy in that country. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Hi there. 42 years in France. Wonderful! And Céret for ten. I've not yet visited Bordeaux, but it's on my long list of places to visit. Thanks for commenting. ❤
Hello ladies. I am a young AA woman and I also love to hear of our success. I have traveled to Europe & love it. Other than being a student, how does one get their foot into the door to get a visa to live abroad. It seems such a complex and expensive process. My soul longs for peace & for my children to grow up in a place where they can enjoy life without fear of violence and persecution because of their skin color.
Hi Patricia, yours is a fascinating story. Thank you for introducing us to Perpignan and Ceret. We're in our 60s and retired two years ago to move from Australia to Italy and France. We're now exploring France, Italy and Spain for a permanent home. We'll now include both towns on our list. Having both France and Spain in your life must be joyous. Our families back in Australia think we're mad but heck you only live once and who says life shouldn't be full of adventures in your 60s! Enjoy life.
I am an 55 year old African American lady, I am praying that in can be able to move to either the United Kingdom or France in 3 -4 years. Cherry, France is beautiful and looks so peaceful ❤
you should be praying to live with your fellow Africans, both places are racist, you better off staying where you are, your too old to move to another place, that shipped sailed 15yrs ago, unless you are financially stabilsed
Renting in France for $680 a month sounds like a dream. Thanks for sharing your experience and inspiring others to consider Céret as a living destination!
@@solangelauthier2381 If you don't know how to enjoy nature and peace than yeah you'll find it boring. Good thing for people who loves the countryside like me that city dwellers think that

Due to inflation, America has become a very expensive place to live. The average rent for a small apartment in many places in America is $1,500-$2,500 a month. Rent is-$3,500-$7,500 or more is some large cities. The average cost for homes in many affluent places in America is $1M. The cheapest homes are around $400,000. Average salaries have not caught up. Many Americans will never be able to afford to buy home. There is a huge substance abuse and homeless problem in America. Crime is out of control. Many reasons to leave.
Thank you! I am a retired American educator. We helped a new school open in Lviv, then spent 6 weeks in Krakow; we're in Tallinn for a month before heading back to Oregon. My wife and I hope to visit France after the Olympics. We plan to sell our Portland condo and then move to France. We will rent so we can travel throughout Europe, and perhaps help Ukraine rebuild after the war ends. There are several significant advantages to living in France: climate, healthcare, culture, and infrastructure. Thanks again! Dean and Cindy.
This part of France is very beautiful. My brother lives in Perpignan and my friend lives in Gironna. Traveling around Europe is fantastic and don't forget Ryanair.
French healthcare is unparalleled and it isn’t just their “systems” but the professionals themselves. Given a choice, I’d always pick visiting a French doctor here in Florida over any others.
@@ungrateful-66 Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it. The more I learn the more I am convinced that Cindy and I must visit many areas to get a better "feel" for the city and its neighborhoods. The challenge is how to set up a Long Stay Visa and still visit several regions. I thought the LSV required one address. Much to process. Merci! Dean & Cindy
Isn't that how life works? One finds their home outside of their native country and live a happy life. I'm from Hawaii and living in Thailand, it's more amazing and wonderful living here. However, I wouldn't mind living in Cerebere, not far from Perpignan, it is a lovely peaceful border town on the Spanish/French border...
I know what you mean. Peace is. EVERYTHING. That's how I feel about my future retirement home in greater Porto, Portugal. It's ALL about peace. I'm so happy for you Queen!
This is awesome!!!!! And good for you for taking control of your life, happiness and mental state. The USA can be stressful living. I lived in Milan, Italy on a year student visa. Loved it!! I'm back in the States (Ugh) now working/ praying on the Netherlands. Europe is wonderful, you don't really need a car, the food is healthier and learning a new language. Amazing!!!!! May you enjoy your life and God protect you always Queen!!!!!
Huh. I read comments below so many European expat videos where everyone blames everything on immigrants and are so angry about them. In many of these places, the immigrant populations are tiny and crime, for example, hasn't really changed much. What has changed a bit? The color of some people's skins... Right-wing groups growing, politicians being elected. Unfortunately, yeah, Natherlands, too, has those emerging issues. I'm a huge fan of The Netherlands, and have been researching that, too (for retirement). Same issues. Portugal, Malta, Spain. Check. Even France. I wish Patricia would do a deep dive on that. I love Italy but it has serious economic issues, as evidenced by young people fleeing. Don't want to be anywhere near Russia. Looking closely at Crete. Been there and love it. But I have studied Greek and it's a real challenge; not necessarily to read, but to speak. And the bureaucracy in so many places is such a headache; not so much for visitors... Have looked at Mexico, central and S. America, too, but not for me. I find European history, culture, food...everything...so much more fascinating and appealing. Maybe someday I'll find the answer. Well, best wishes to you!
@@izzytoons I am American and moved to France 7 years ago. Immigration is a result of elites - nobody asked for it. Is there a problem with Islam? Yes. It's not about color - it's behavior and the ethical practices of cultures. If people didn't think there is a civilizational clash, they wouldn't be voting for the "right wing" party. There seems to be an assumption on your part that people believe the issue with Arabs for example is fabricated or exaggerated. Having lived here and worked with Arabs for years both in France in the US, you are their enemy in their eyes.

LoveloveLOVE this video. I went to Paris for the first time in 2022 and I literally fell in love. My friends think I’m a romantic dork, but I literally felt at home and at ease in Paris. Honestly, it is my goal to live in France. 🎉
I’m a French Canadian Floridian and understand being unable to deal with the Canadian weather. Quebec City is IMO the most charming North American city but their winters are worse than Florida summers. Also, because French and English have SO MANY words which mean and are spelled the same as each other, I feel it’s the easiest language for anglophones to learn.
Dear Patricia....so glad to have found your video. I'm near retirement and, as a French major and Sorbonne grad, I've thought about relocating. Paris is too expensive. so I was thinking about Bayonne...have you been there? Very best to you!

@@davidandrusia137Hello. Bayonne and the Pays Basque except in the mountains farthest from the coast is very expensive, but if you can drive and don't want to be near the beaches, there are many small and middle sized cities in the South West where one can still find affordable lodging.
Hello! I live in north Texas USA and took 2 years of French in high school. And with things changing in the states for the worse, I'm looking at France as a possible option if/when I'm ready to "get out of Dodge". Thanks for your wonderful and informative video. Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!!

Bonjour, Patricia. Thank you for sharing your experience of moving and living in France. I worked for a French textile company in the United States and travelled to France. My soul felt renewed. Architecture and design is my profession and passion. Also, access to farm fresh food markets, history, culture, beauty and design. It is my desire to experience living in France, I am planning now. Great story! Thank you for sharing. I spend 4-5 months per year in Belgium and am going back in a few days. I learned French and German in about 7 months and it sure makes a difference being able to speak with the local people. Keep posting!
Thanks for watching. Learning French and German in 7 months is impressive. Enjoy your time in Belgium! And if you're ever interested in sharing your own experience, we're always looking for new stories.
Patricia, I'm pleasantly surprised to hear of your choice of Perpignan, and also note the coincidence of being an academic professor in Virginia. I am a dance professor, and I visited Perpignan in 1991 and 1993, as my American teacher Matt Mattox was based there. And yes, it's a beautiful location. I also have taught for three years each at Radford University and at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. So we have much in common. Not to mention, I'm also considering a move to either Italy or France now that I am at a pre-retirement stage of life. Now that you have brought this back to my attention, Perpignan would be a good consideration. The climate, pace of life, and proximity to Spain, Nice, and Italy make it a choice to consider. Thank you for making this video!
It certainly is a small world. I'm sure it's no coincidence that you saw this video. It's the Universe's way of reminding you! Best wishes with your plans.
Hey there, I'm a half Brit half French guy and live not far from Céret (in the Conflent area). Céret is a lovely small town, very trendy, the museum of modern art with all the Picasso work, the bull fights during the Feria, the ambiance of a North Catalunya community, the Mediterranean sea just down the road, the border with Spain just a few miles away. Lovely spot! I might bump into you one of these days 😀
Hi, I lived in Céret during the late 50th and went to High school there There was only 3,000 residents in the winter. I met Dali. He wanted to be buried in the Perpignan train station. The Saturday's market had maybe 4 stand. My mother used to buy the chicken still with their feathers. Guess who had to pluck them 😜 I miss Ceret. Couldn't wait to move to Paris, now I wish I were there 😂
Wow Patricia … your videos keep getting better and better. Absolute joy to hear you speak while watching your walk about town. I loved your message …. Clearly spoken and packed with info. Wishing you a wonderful day. ❤
Patricia you are making France feel like the best idea for an American that would like to broaden their horizons. I've considered Portugal, France and Ireland. I'm curious has anything about leaving America been regretful since moving to France? And has it been difficult learning to speak french? Thank you Patricia for sharing your journey. You are influencing people to go after their dreams. That is a blessing.
With all its popularity and favorably digitial nomad and retirement taxes, Portugal has gotten much more crowded over he past five years, and prices have gotten more expensive, especially for housing. The Portuguese have become much less eager to encourage immigrants, because of what their presence has done to costs. That's why they killed the special tax schemes for immigrants. Shame. We were looking seriously there, right before the summer when it literally went up in flames. Climate change is also an issue. Ireland does require $100K income, so that may/may not be a factor... Weather is less than perfect, and there's concern that Atlantic ocean currents, which are changing, may bring less warmth to Ireland. France has been and continues to be shifting rightward politically, growing more and more inward looking and anti-immigrant. Wish Patricia would give a deep, honest look at that. Same with Spain, Malta, The Netherlands. Closer to Russia seems a risk. Looking closely at Crete now. Been there and it's wonderful. The Greek language, with an entirely different alphabet, and more, is a hurdle. And I worry about spending so much time with lawyers, interpreters, and accountants getting the simplest, most routine, frequent things done during my retirement, due to the crushing, soul-sucking bureaucracy, at least as described by those who live/have lived there. People like Patricia, and issues here in America, do keep me searching and weighing the pros and cons, though... Last, I hear all these claims about how inexpensive housing is in these places, but when you go and actually look at the prices people claim they aren't really there, at least not in the places I would want to be...
@izzytoons thanks for your thought provoking comment. An increase in demand does increase prices. The right is growing here too, with Le Pen getting more votes in the last election than the one 5 years earlier. No place is perfect; however, finding a place that feels good helps even when some things might not be ideal. I'll see what I can do to create a video about this.
@@PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst Thank you for responding. I would love to consider France, Spain, and The Netherlands more, but I do worry about the right. Spain had very progressive LGBTQ+ legislation in '22, and just one year later another absolutely shocking. You are now legally allowed to beat a trans person so long as you leave no visible injuries. If you or I were to intervene and that required phsyical contact, we in turn could be charged with assault. Let that sink in. And that's just LGBTQ+. The whole reason I am looking to leave the U.S. is to retire in peace somewhere. Problem is, peace is under threat everywhere, it seems. Ack! Thanks again for your work. I really didn't expect you to respond! :)
You are about as far from Paris as you can get while still being in France! And as close to Barcelona as you can be while not living in Spain. The French Catalonia.

Thank you! I think it depends on where in France you choose to settle. There are definitely more pricey areas here. It's been a slower process to build community, but now I feel like I'm a part of it and have a few true friends here. 🙂

Hi Patricia, I’m so happy to have come across your video. On a recent visit to Lussac des Chateaux , I fell in love with the French countryside. I’m seriously considering a move to France . I think there should be more information here….the price you pay for rent, is it typical for what you have in 2024? Do you have heat/cooling in every room(some old places can be pretty chilly and pretty hot) and how much are they used? Do you pay extra for water? Are there other factors that affect the cheapness of your apartment? Ie: where it is situated, what it is next door to, what is above or below, etc. Does it include a place to park your car? Do you have a washer and dryer? How old everything is inside… just by telling everyone that you pay that price in your situation does not mean anyone can get an apartment for that price….also, if you speak French, it might’ve easier to negotiate a rental price or get accepted into an apartment.
You lived in Ceret. I was born in the other valley, in Prades. Leaving abroad now but enjoy always go back to that region. Hope you enjoy the region and climbed Canigou montain..

I really enjoy your presence on YT. Such a pleasure to see and hear from someone so smart, modest, focused, and positive. I have wanted to do the same kinds of things you have chosen to do. I'm very happy for you and enjoy so much the way you present yourself on camera as an educated woman with no axe to grind, at least not in this video. Chances are I'll never be able to follow in your footsteps as my wanderlust train left the station many years ago. I did visit France in the 1980s and really enjoyed it. The language is beautiful, but one needs to be pretty talented in learning new languages to speak a challenging language like French. I admire you for learning to do it. Do you read and write it, too? All the best!
Thank you for saying this. Such wonderful thoughts. I never thought I would speak French since I was told that my brother got the language learning genes, which I took to mean "and you, Patricia don't have them. What it took was a change in what I believed about myself around learning languages and a reason (moving to France and wanting to speak this beautiful language)to buckle down and be consistent with language learning. I do read and write it also, but with plenty of typos and mistakes. 🫢
I love that region of France, but I don't know that particular city. We lived for three months in Monein near the Pyrenees. Like you, I’ve always loved the French language and I’ve studied it off and on over the years. I’ve been to France twice and Quebec twice. Quebec is lovely, but I wouldn’t want to be there in the fall or winter.
❓ You skipped over a very important point - what kind of visa did you have to visit for so long, rent that apartment for a year, then move elsewhere???
My first couple of years I came on a visitor visa. It's the visa people who are retired typically get. Now I have profession-liberale visa so that I could start my business in France. The visitor visa was good for a year at a time and I had to renew each year. The profession-liberale visa was initially for one year and mine was renewed for four years. I lived in Perpignan for my first year and then move to Céret where I have been ever since. Sorry that was not clear.
I was wondering this too! How did you obtain accomodation on a visitor visa? Did you work on the visitor visa? In the UK we can only get 90 days visa, then we have to spend 90 days in the UK, then 90 France and so on...
Has the time allowed on visa changed? I was told that you couldn’t stay that long. Shengen region? I don’t think I’m spelling that correctly but a group of countries that limits the amount of time you can now stay, I was in the Languedoc and fell in love with it..,felt like home….and cried when I was told I couldn’t just went a place and stay.

This part of France is very beautiful. My brother lives in Perpignan and my friend lives in Gironna. Traveling around Europe is fantastic and don't forget Ryanair.
@@HaiNguyen-zh8cvThank you for the info. I appreciate it! So many great places, besides Paris.
I am glad that you like France. I am French, living in the USA!

Hello Patricia, You're a lovely lady.
Welcome to our beautiful country and please make yourself at home.
Thank you. I'm doing my best to.😄
I love to see all these women in the comments❤ I'm watching from DaNang, Vietnam...

Thank you! Yes, Europe is wonderful. Best wishes on you plans for the Netherlands.
@@PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst aww ☺️ thank you 🙏🏼 I appreciate it 😇

I agree, Québec City is very charming. Good for you finding a warm home.

Hi, I lived in Céret during the late 50th and went to High school there
There was only 3,000 residents in the winter. I met Dali. He wanted to be buried in the Perpignan train station.
The Saturday's market had maybe 4 stand. My mother used to buy the chicken still with their feathers. Guess who had to pluck them 😜
I miss Ceret. Couldn't wait to move to Paris, now I wish I were there 😂
Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve thought about moving to France for years. Lots of wonderful insights!
Thank you for watching. I'm glad this was insightful for you. 🙂
😀 No regrets about moving here. I still visit the US from time to time to catch up with old friends and get my fill of Mexican food.
@Dms-sn8qj , everything is a matter of perspective. It is wonderful that you are living in a place that feels better to you. Best wishes.

Thank you so much. This is the best presentation I have seen on moving to another country. Upbeat, but, informative and honest. I am shocked at how affordable it is.. I always assumed it would be expensive to live there. You seem very happy, has it been to make friends?
Thank you! I think it depends on where in France you choose to settle. There are definitely more pricey areas here. It's been a slower process to build community, but now I feel like I'm a part of it and have a few true friends here. 🙂

You’re living my dream! After my kids are out of school I would love to live in southern France even if it’s part of the year. Like you, I’ve always loved the French language and I’ve studied it off and on over the years. I’ve been to France twice and Quebec twice. Quebec is lovely, but I wouldn’t want to be there in the fall or winter.
I am happy for you. You look so relaxed. I'm from Norfolk, by the way, currently living in Austin, Texas. I would love to visit Leuisant, France.
❓ You skipped over a very important point - what kind of visa did you have to visit for so long, rent that apartment for a year, then move elsewhere???
Google it
My first couple of years I came on a visitor visa.
@@Lele-p3g4g no on the visitor visa I did not work. With the profession-liberale visa I can earn money with my business.
Great story telling! You explain your experience so well. Loved listening to you!
I think this is remarkable when you can pack and take off. It takes lots of self confidence . Big pat on the back to you !
