As a Frenchman, I never realized that eating cheeses is not as common as I thought.... Watching this as someone who grew up eating dozens and dozens of different cheeses is really enlightening

In Iceland they eat buried fermented shark.
It is suspected that once upon the time they caught a shark which is poisonous because of the ammonia in it so throw the poisonous shark in the dump. Half a year later they are starving so bad and in desperation they dig the poisonous rotting shark out the dump and find out it is safe to eat now.
I imagine a lot of these food is discovered the same way.
I just found out about this from watching one of gordon ramsays shows where he travels and checks out the food and culture of different countries. Did not know that was how they started to eat that stuff. Very interesting
It really is incredible what people will eat, and how a lot of "delicacies" are just people going "how do we eat this horrendously disgusting thing"? I know Northern European cuisine isn't generally highly rated, but one thing I remember hearing about in history class that was apparently a Nordic invention was putting tree bark in bread. It's barely consumable by the human body in any way, but people would eat it during famine to feel full.
So the amonia just evaporates away as the shark is starving.
This is so strange. Matto has apparently been to countless parties that served cheese but knows nothing about them.
I don’t know if this is like an Australian thing or something but I can’t think of a single party I’ve been to that served cheese on the snack table.
@@StrawberryDreamsicle Over here in Croatia it's tradition to have a charcuterie board with cheeses and dried meats at most gatherings. The cheeses usually used are basic ones like gouda, Emmentaler, Edamer, Tilzit etc.
@@StrawberryDreamsicle In Mexico I've seen it happeb with semi regularity, from "Ball cheese with cream inside and fancy crackers on top for you to dip in" in one wedding I was in to the simple "Cream cheese surrounded by crackers for the guests to enjoy" in birthday parties, so at least here it does happen.

Also cheese is probably way cheaper in Europe since that is where most of it comes from so maybe it’s more common at regular parties

the disrespect for Mozzarella was insane to see as well, I didn't know there were people who don't like it. Especially Buffalo Mozzarella, that's like top 5 cheese material.
@@FHT1883 In his defense I must admit that the Mozzarella doesn't have a strong taste, it is very delicate. That's why we usually put it on pizza rather than eating it as a standalone thing.

I once had a nice caramelized white cheddar, and an applewood smoked bacon brie. It was a life changer. Strange cheeses are a gateway drug. Cheddar can still be great, but nothing touches the more wild cheeses.

@@Fetidaf I hear you. But when having a sauce and thinking about what it would go well with, I don't have the kind of reaction Matto was having. Like hot sauce isn't something you eat on it's own, but it's not "terrible" and will not make you gag like what I was seeing with this cheese.
If some people love the super funky arguably gross taste of certain cheeses, whatever, but I think to most people's palates these kinds of cheeses taste absolutely nasty enough that me memeing on them isn't the worst thing in the world.
I matt as a French person I know a bit about cheeses
My recommendation would be Saint Nectaire, it's a French cheese from the Puy-de-Dôme
I dont know if you can get it in Australia but if you can put your hands around it its definitely worth it
Saint-Nectaire is really the best cheese that has ever existed I love it so much
Tomme de Savoie is definetly out there too, not as good as Saint Nectaire but definetly amongst the bests

I always say people who don't like blue cheese have never had good blue cheese. Most people form their opinion on it from blue cheese dressings which uses mediocre blue cheese. Although of course it's still not for everyone.

I'm glad Matt has a similar reaction to Blue Cheese as I do. I used to work for Chick-Fil-A and had to make their Market Salads which have Blue Cheese, even the miniscule amount I had to deal with was near gag worthy. I don't hate many things as much as blue cheese.

Being from Spain, I'd reccomend Matto and any reader interested to try Queso Manchego. It is a sheep milk cheese. I personally like it if it's been "fermented" (dont know if that the right word, but you get what I mean) for 3-4 months. It is possible to buy it anywhere between 1 month and 2 years "fermented"
