  • Hello! My name is Isa and I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user with chronic illness. My family has loved Disney Cruise Line for the ways it is accessible for my family with 2 wheelchair users and a service dog. However, on my trip on The Wish I had a less than stellar experience. In this video I talk about my experience on the Disney Wish.

"Some people aren't comfortable talking to people with disabilities" ... Well they need to be PROFESSIONALS and freaking GET COMFORTABLE. Jesus Christ this ticked me off!

Omg! The response that some people feel uncomfortable is OUTRAGEOUS!

"Some people don't feel comfortable talking to disabled people"
    That's discrimination.
I'm trying to find something else to say. I can't. I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Yeah, like wtf. Their fear isn’t your responsibility. You should speak to the person with the disability and not their aid or family members/friends.
I understand that the cast member might not want to say the wrong thing but, ignoring someone is way worse than any potential offense

Yeah that's just bigotry. It's really no different than saying "Some people aren't comfortable talking to to Black people." If someone said that here would be zero tolerance and no one would excuse it.

As someone with a chronic medical condition, the “Can you walk?” shouldn’t have been asked if there was an accessible ramp. Yes, the person may be able to physically walk but, it would be a better quality of life to take the accessibility path.

As a person with multiple autoimmune diseases I look for lack of a better word normal but on the inside I’m not. I’ve told people yes I can walk but if I do I won’t be able to do anything else for days. We don’t want sympathy we want to be respected as we are. I’m glad you spoke up even if nothing changes all we can do is try.

We learned heaps about mobility on our last cruise, our first with my husband in a power chair. I agree with you about people being inconsiderate - staff guiding through restaurants either rushing ahead too quickly (if my husband was using his cane), or not being aware of chairs and such in the way (when using the power chair). It was a good eye opening experience.

SAME. My family took a trip on the Disney Magic this year, and while we usually LOVE the Magic and Wonder, this time around my daughter was having mobility issues, sometimes in a chair, sometime walking in a boot. The water slide was a complete no-go, stairs only. Chair-accessible seating for the theatrical shows was not sufficient for the number of guests who needed it. And half the time the "automatic" swinging doors that go from an exterior deck to the interior either didn't function at all or didn't stay open long enough for her to wheel through before they closed on her. Don't get me started on the tiny elevators. We are very familiar with Disney's park accessibility programs and DAS, but it was a real eye opener to see how far they could still go on the cruise ships. Usually Cast Members are great, but when they're not... a little training goes a long way.

The magic and the wonder came out in 1998 and 1999 which is only 7-8 years after the ADA so I think I have more patience with the older ships. The newer ships are just disappointing bc there’s not that excuse anymore.

For the last couple weeks, I've been watching a lot of families and couples take Disney cruise and decided to go on my very first Disney Cruise from my milestone birthday next year and I was thinking how about the people who are in Wheelchairs is the ship accessible for them, as I’m Disabled too, I am able to walk on my own, I do have Family members who are in Wheelchairs and I did see a Couple who were assigned a ADA state room on a cruise which they did not request they said… I also hate when people don’t talk to me directly. They talk to the person with me..

I will say, that this experience is rare for a Disney cruise which is partly why I was so surprised.

I needed this. Thank you. I won't be planning any cruises (was hoping to try one) on the newer ships unless I see some improvements. I'm also ambulatory! And I am terrified of doing a vacation that isn't Disney. It's like you said, we're paying for this. I just wish we had more options.

Hey! My daughter is an ambulatory user also, we did the dream last august.
Thanks for sharing your honest opinion, it’s a shame it didn’t meet your needs :(
I’M SORRY!? They don’t feel comfortable talking to disabled people !???!!! That’s disgusting!

I was going on the Treasure next year, but hearing all of the negative reviews about the Wish and wheelchairs, I decided to cancel. (Also was unsure of what excursions would be TRULY accessible and was scared of the tender boats)

For the record, I love all the other ships. They work really well for me. It is just the Wish/Treasure format that was really disappointing.

"Some people don't feel comfortable talking to people who are disabled." The next time this happens, and it will happen, call for a supervisor and tell then you have been discriminated against. Tell them what the lady just told you and when they tried to gaslight you, and they will, use this sentence; "Some of the staff don't feel comfortable talking to Black people." It will get the point across.

I did follow up on this issue with an email. I totally get what you're saying. While agree both statements are disgusting, I have heard both in all seriousness. I don't think using one to show how bad the other is as effective as I want it to be. The underlying issue is that people feel that comfort should be prioritized over other's well being. There is no amount of comparison that is going to get that that very mentality is dangerous and disgusting. It's stuff like this that motivates my work in research and what I talk about on this channel.

We had issues with the multiple door buttons not working on the deck. We had 3 people one in scooter and one in wheelchair. It was so frustrating. The elevator system is a nightmare. Some of that's Disney's fault and some of it is just rude people. People would jump right in front of us. Even if we only had the wheelchair.

That was also a big issue. My grandma was never comfortable being by herself but if it was her and I then she would freak out.

    Not whining at ALL!
Train every staff member, in every accessibility feature.
Would they hire a crew member who was uncomfortable speaking to kids? Or the elderly?
You're being so generously kind to them here. I respect you for the balanced opinion, but also...
It's not the job of a client, paying full price, to play disability consultant, or have a less excellent time because many people, at many steps, failed you.

Hello! I just discovered your channel! Big time Disney Parks fan and had never been on a Disney cruise before. I would love to go on one someday. I use a transfer chair sometimes for my COPD since I have trouble walking for long lengths of time. Which Disney cruise ship do you think is best for someone with a disability?

I have only been on the Wish, the Dream, and the Wonder. I really love the Disney Wonder Alaska cruise. I don’t know what your specific needs are, but the wonder is a beautiful ship that is small and friendly. I love the Alaska cruise bc the weather is so much more appropriate for my heat intolerance. I also find that the longer cruise makes me feel less like I have to be on the move all the time trying to do all the things. I can play board games while watching the gorgeous Alaska scenery. I find that the dream sometimes is too large for me. Both ships I sometimes have a little bit of trouble on a little door lip. But overall, I would go back to The Wonder a thousand times if I could.

It breaks my hart to hear all this as a wheelchair user I understand where you’re coming from especially when minutes add up to hours I think it would be easier for imagers to spend the day in a chair thinking of designing something for easy accessibility

I am shocked because the first thing you learn in traditions is to one get on that person‘s level and talk to them directly. It’s called inclusion it’s called courtesy and show.

Extremely disappointing to have so many accesability issues on a brand new ship. And how guest services handled your feedback - digusting on their part, especially coming from a Disney employee.

Watching the video for some reason none of this surprises me. All Disney Cruise Line cares about is getting your money

That is unacceptable with how they treated you as an adult in a wheelchair. Honestly I understand that the Disney line is more designed to deal with younger people who can't/don't/won't speak for themselves but it's a total lack of professionalism in my opinion. Sorry but I think the Mouse failed you miserably and I find that ridiculous!
Also, elevators should be a universally accessible size regardless of where it is located!
Sorry this experience alone shows me that they don't really care/know how to "handle" a person in a wheelchair, much less an adult in a chair who can/would be able to speak for themselves and not having a parent/representative with them to avoid needing to learn to speak to someone with a disability in such an unprofessional manner.
I find RCL to do a pretty decent job, at least compared to honestly how it sounds like the "poo" show thet you had while onboard the Wish...
