    I was under treatment for depression with psychotherapy and medications in he 1980's. I used jogging as a form of meditation and also discovered Buddhism. I had to quit running because of bad knees. I stopped all medications in 1991. I am still a Buddhist. At age 77, having spent 15 years in SE Asia as a medical volunteer in a predominately Buddhist country I'm now fully retired. I feel better than ever.

    I have 'suffered' from anxiety for almost 4 years now and meditation and acceptance had a lot to do in reducing it.
    I meditate 20 min. every morning starting with body scan (focusing on each body part from head to toe and 'feeling' relaxed with every outbreath by releasing the tension aka body scan) and then focusing on the breath, keeping a count upto 10 (The mind drifts and I simply acknowledge it without being agitated by it and bring my focus back on breath).
    I don't think meditation reduces the anxiety just by itself. I see it as a practice. I learn what really feels like a relaxed state when i meditate and if during the day (and especially when going to bed) I feel anxious then first I accept it ('I am feeling anxious' or 'my body is shaking involuntarily', just simply noticing it and nothing else) and 'being with it' (in a funny way you just start enjoying the body shaking, idk) and just take a deep breath, exhale while trying to bring the same feeling of relaxation that you experienced during meditation.
    I don't know if it makes sense to you when you read this but this really works for me.

      Biggest change for me has been acceptance of myself regardless of what the society wants ME to be. They don't have any right to dictate that, only I have it. So now I accept myself for who I am instead of constantly trying to meet society standards.

    • @armeetindergill
      @armeetindergill 5 років тому +12

      @@DS-Pakaemon I get where you are coming from. But for me society/culture is something that keeps people sane to a certain degree. For e.g. if my sleeping habits and my eating habits are aligned with those around me I feel less stressed because I don't have to figure out these things by myself. The questions of the sort 'what should I do when...' are answered already for us. If society wants me to be a self dependent man by a certain age, then I get it. It's important to have things in order.
      Accepting yourself also means to accept that we are nothing without people around us. We are social beings.
      But as with everything, and most importantly, too much of order (societal pressure) is also not good.
      As Buddha said - take the middle path.

    I am staunch follower of teachings of Buddha and the biggest takeaway for me is: Buddhism isn't the solution to your problem, but you are. It's not a means to an end, but it's the end. To love yourself as who you are and others as who they are. There's so much suffering. Acceptance is the only way forward.

    As a guy who after 14 years of dealing with religious seeking, have return to Buddhism. However, I won't deny that Ive been going through some personal struggles like minor depression, anxiety, and even bitterness. And while eastern religion are very well known for focussing on the mind and looking for God (Whoever you view it) on a much deeper level, but even I admit that its hard to do things as a buddhist/eastern religious person but still deal with struggles. And there could be many reasons on why Im still dealing with the down side of life. But hopefully your vids can at least give me some insight on how to improve on myself on some level. God bless

    Food for thought! True story! The famous French chef/writer/traveler Eric Ripert is a practicing Buddhist and in a video on UA-cam he is cooking with the late chef/writer/traveler Anthony Bourdain who was one of his best friends. Bourdain suffered from anxiety/depression, suicidal ideation, alcoholism and had done drugs in the past. Eric suggests that Bourdain practice meditation which Eric does everyday as he also has a very hectic schedule running the top 5 star Michelin restaurant in NYC. Bourdain refused and look what happened! Eric was the one who found Anthony's body after he committed suicide. "When the student is ready, the teacher appears"! Too bad Bourdain wasn't ready for the teacher! Maybe if he had embraced meditation/Buddhism though one doesn't have to be a Buddhist to meditate, he'd be alive today. Thanks for sharing another great video~

    Kids arent born with anxiety because anxiety is a conditioned response, developed over time, through contact with an external environment. It is the environment that conditions us as children to have anxiety as adults.
    When i look back on my childhood and the trauma i was subjected to it makes perfect sense that i would develop anxiety later in life.
    Its important to keep in mind the Buddha suffered zero trauma as a child, and didnt grow up in poverty. In fact he grew up in extreme luxury and was raised by a family who LOVED him and WANTED him. If the Buddha had been repeatedly traumatized as a child, and grew up being UNWANTED and UNLOVED, guaranteed we would not be hearing about the Buddha today.
    Any thoughts?

    • @HeraldandDonut
      @HeraldandDonut 5 років тому +1

      Well we most likely still would have the Buddha today because when he was born he was destined to become a wealthy king or a great spiritual leader. He became a spiritual leader even though he had everything in his childhood, so if he was exposed to trauma in childhood he probably would have still become a spiritual leader. But your point is really interesting. Also keep in mind that trauma is everywhere, even in wealthy royal families who have everything, kids can still experience anxiety/trauma due to other factors like family dynamics etc

    Used to go meditating at a Diamond Way Buddhist centre years ago. It was nice up to some point. I was able ignoring rather irritating stuff like being told to imagine how some invisible entity shot a ray of light from its mouth into my mouth... but the stuff that really turned me off was the glaring arrogance of the folks who ran the show. One day I asked if I could bring a friend. They asked me about this friend, his financial background / social status. I responded he was unemployed, but in need of something that stabilizes him, offers him balance. The head-honcho replied: 'Nah, we don't want such people here'. That was the moment I told to myself 'fuck you hyprocritical lifestyle-c*nts'. I never returned... and I have to admit not really missing it. Try stoic philosophy. Combine it with some meditation. We don't really need actual Buddhism here. Just look at actual Buddhist countries... the people there aren't really more balanced than we are. It's even the contrary: They (the average Joe) often are highly narcissistic and brutal. Furthermore..just look at how animals factually are treated in Buddhist countries...forget about the romanticizing crap you saw in movies like 7 days in Tibet. It was lifestyle propaganda for a naive western audience desiring something exotic Christianity lost ages ago - the spiritual core.

      @@AJ-CR Affects of anti-depressants will occur in 1month or in 2 months maybe, not instantly. But you better meditate instead of taking anti depressants. There are Osho communes in USA and in EU they do lots of meditations which specifically are very useful against bipolar disorder. Or do Osho meditations at home , kundalini meditation is good for first time. Meditate every day in 3 to 6 months you will see improvements. This is proved on lots of people with disorder and anxiety including me.

    How to fight anxiety, which is not caused by external factors or pressure from somethings, but created by medical imbalance? I kept accepting anxiety, suggested by therapist and Buddha philosophy, but it was never ended until my doctor discovered my anxiety and depression caused by medical condition and then received the treatment for the condition, a week later my depression and anxiety are gone.
