Troubles ahead for the Sheriff? - The company that "owns" Transnistria in a new reality

  • The company Sheriff does not play on a level playing field in Moldova's breakaway Transnistria region. It is probably the largest business in the separatist Moldovan region and is deeply involved in the politics of the region. The Renewal Republican Obnovlenie party contains many members and politicians who work for Sheriff. Officially it has 29 of the 33 seats in Moldova's Supreme Council. President Vadim Krasnoselsky is also supported by Sheriff.
With such strong political influence there are accusations of Sheriff's corruption and that there is no level playing field in Transnistria. The influence of the Russia-Ukraine war with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine mean that some of the special privileges of Sheriff - such as access to free Russian gas and special importer status - may disappear. Will the company be able to continue to thrive in a united Moldova?

Transnistria is such a bizarre place. It’s like if Russia was a tiny tinpot republic with 100k people. Sheriff is basically a government and business rolled into one. I’m sure that’s what the interviewee will explain.
