    Great reviews! Can you suggest a router for distance/wall penetration? I recently moved and the plaster on the walls are slowing down my speeds like crazy. Tried the ax88u, ax86u both independently as well as a mesh (wired backhaul) neither can provided enough bandwidth in the garage which is about 20 feet away but there are two exterior walls between. Going to try the ET8 next...

    Thank you for this, and all of your videos. I find them extremely informative and helpful. Can I ask your opinion on something please? Would there be value in establishing a ET12 as a main router, with two ET8s as nodes? Or just go with ET8s throughout? I don’t think my wife would allow the sky scrapers in common areas… 😂

    • @landpet
      @landpet  11 місяців тому +1

      I would just stick with the same, in fact just as a heads up, if you're going ET8, I personally think the XT9 (looks identical to the ET8) is better. I realize the XT9 is wifi 6 when the ET8 if WiFi 6E but from testing both, the XT9 performs better wirelessly. If you're going wired backhaul, there's not much difference between the two.

      The ET8 didn't work out for me in my home unfortunately (an old home made of lath & plaster interior construction), as the range of the new 6 GHz band proved to be way too short to make for any kind of reliable backhaul connection between the nodes unless close together. Or even suitable for fronthaul traffic unless the client is in the same room as one of the nodes.
      Sent it back and went a step down to the XT8 which is performing very well here. ...
      The 6 GHz band is just not ready for primetime in my view assuming it ever will be. As the FCC has just placed much too heavy power restrictions on the band to adequately offset its greater natural signal attenuation on those higher frequencies to make it comparable with the lower and higher powered 5 GHz band.

    If these WiFi 6E systems are using the 6GHz channel for backhaul, doesn't the short range of that frequency limit how far apart the nodes can be? Wouldn't they have to be closer together than with a system using the 5GHz channel for backhaul?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 роки тому +8

      Excellent question, the short answer is yes but it might not matter.
      The long answer is, well it depends since they really shouldn't be more than 50 ft apart which 6GHz can handle. Now let's add into the fact that if someone is living in more of a congested area (which may not be the case), like a building, well chances are the neighbors have routers with 5GHz becoming very common. So now there's more of a chance the 5GHz might struggle a bit (even though there are different channels) compared to a 6GHz band which most people don't have now since it's fairly new tech, aka the 6GHz is wide open besides the fact it can tolerate faster speeds.

    fiber -> modem/router -> 2.5GB switch -> APs,

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 роки тому

      I don't believe so. Does your modem/router support 2.5GB? Even if it did, unless it had 2 or more ports that supports 2.5GB, the secondary ET8 would still be using gig speeds.

      That's a tough one, they are both amazing but maybe the Orbi is slightly better since it's a quad band which makes the wifi 6E (6GHz) band completely open for devices. I think the ET12 Pro gave slightly better numbers in terms of the actual speed tests at the farther ranges, granted I think they both stopped at around 350 ft. They are both phenomenal.

    Thanks for the review. I need to cover about 6500 sqft. across 3 floors with gigabit internet. Will the ET8 be able to integrate into my current system (3× RT-68u)?
    Right now there are some weak/dead spots. Will the network speed be limited to my RT-68u, handicapping the ET8 or am I able to roam between them at variable speeds? Thanks so much for your input :)

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 роки тому +2

      Yes the ET8 will work with the RT68U but it's not something I recommend off the bat since the ET8 using the 6 GHz as the backhaul and the 68U doesn't have 6GHz. So the ET8 would need to use the 5GHz for backhaul which I don't even know how and if it supports that (in theory it should since it's AiMesh compatible). I don't recommend mixing old and new technology as the new device can only go as fast as the old device. If you did decide to go this route, I would make the ET8 the main router and have the RT68U be the secondary nodes. I recommend using your best router as the main router.

      Yes you can go directly into the ONT, that’s how I test these. You may need to redo the setup, so I would perform a factory reset (this erases all your settings so do keep that in mind if you want to go this route) on the et8, remove the Verizon router and go directly from et8 to the ONT, then go through setup via the asus router app.

    So basically, if these two WiFi 6E systems are using the 6GHz channel for backhaul, does that mean that i am not going to be able to connect my Samsung S21 Ultra with 6E and i will have to use the 5Ghz band? So i either have to go wired backhaul or go for the more expensive model, the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000, which is quad band, so i guess i can sacrifice one of its 5Ghz band to create a wireless backhaul mesh system?

    • @landpet

      There's an option to use as a dedicated backhaul, if that's not selected then you can connect to it. I use wired backhaul so it's available for me and I have good speeds throughout because of the fast backhaul

    I have the ET8. I am overall happy with it. I think your range test is interesting but not that useful. Who is going to go two blocks away and hope they connect to their home Wifi? As for the 2.5G ports, yes, two ports would be nice. I have gotten around that by getting a couple of TRENDnet 2.5G switches which gives me more than enough 2.5G ports. As for the looks of the units. I guess if you like looking at your router than the more expensive unit looks better. But frankly, IMO the best router is the one that is the least visible. Smaller is better IMO. In that regard, I am waiting for your objective review of the ET8 vs Eero Pro 6E. Thanks.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 роки тому +7

      ET8 is good. The range test is an objective way of testing if it advertised coverage is something doable which is the case in most cases. The real reason I do it is because some people have detached garages, guest houses and the less common which is something like a horse stable that they want to attach some cameras to see if it will reach the wifi signal. I have a whole bunch of the comparisons coming up.

    Dong from Dong Knows Tech had a good review of these. Basically, the ET12 are amazing if you can run an ethernet cable between them (you'll need 2.5 Gbps switches if there are switches between them).
    I have had bad results every time I tried to use a router as a NAS. You're better off with any cheapo NAS over sticking a USB drive into a router.

    1) were you using a 2.5 modern
