    You explain the mesh wifi connection well to me, especially the wireless backhaul and wired backhaul, even able to be connected via a Switch. Connection illustration really helps. Not like other UA-camrs, they rarely explain wireless backhaul band, not even mention wire connected each other via a Switch. I also like the comparison of hardware and feature differences. Thank you !!!

    Great video. Any idea or suggestions regarding the ethernet/wired backhaul instability? It seems that firmware updates tend to break the ethernet backhaul feature. Do you have any suggestions to prevent or any way of knowing if if a firmware update will break a feature when the system is working well? Should we turn off auto update for the firmware or do you recommend leaving it on for security updates?
    Either way thank you for the detailed review.

    A qeustion for you: Has it any sense to mix the two products? I mean, I have a huge old house (italian one) with very wide walls so I was thinking to cover the interior with 2 to 4 XT8 and the garden with 3 XD4 but I was wondering if the wireless performance degradation I will have due to the XD4s will affect also the traffic through the XT8s...
    Thanks in advance,

      Thanks! That can work, check out the Asus ET8 as well, that seems the be the fastest one. I did a video on that recently: ua-cam.com/video/cqcJ6oP6Ky0/v-deo.html
      The 3 XD4's will not effect the 3 XT8's speed at the home. Every device tries to go as fast as possible. If you add a slower one like the XD4, it only effects the XD4.

    Thanks for all the info in your videos. Quick question. I have gigabit internet. I want a triband system because I don't want to run wires (3 floors in our home). Do all the triband systems you've done reviews on replace the router from my internet provider (I'd like to send that back and save the monthly rental fee). If not, which systems do you suggest that would?

    Great review - learned a lot. Would be interested in your feedback about where to physically mount the units - some people say mount them as high as possible for more range, others say it does not matter. I have a long ranch-style house but with 2 floors so was thinking about mounting 1st floor on far sides of house with modem in middle. Thoughts?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  Рік тому

      Thanks! Typically speaking, the higher the better but really what that means is don't place it on the floor. I think anything desk level or higher and you should be golden. Granted mine is typically placed around 7 ft above.
      For your second comment, so when you say mounting on the far sides of the house, I'm assuming you mean you are going to run wired backhaul? Since your router needs to connect to your modem via ethernet. If your whole system is wired backhaul, then you can place them just about anywhere but for a wireless backhaul setup, you typically want them about 30 to 50 feet from each other. Hope this helps. I've done a video on how to set this stuff up with examples of showing the connections and everything here: ua-cam.com/video/EgflfacpDgI/v-deo.html

    The fact that the Mini XD4 has only one ethernet port for the nodes is a deal-breaker for me. XT8 is too expensive too, so I'll probably stick to what I have at the moment until the XT8 comes down in price a bit; I mean, a lot :-)

      Check out the ax92u. Slightly pricier than the xd4, but cheaper than the xt8, and yet, with all the bells and whistles of the xt8, except the design. If you don't mind the gamer design, you're effectively getting the same product for 100$ less.

    Hi! This video is what I was looking for!! One info: do you think in a gigabit internet connection (1000mbps) the xd4 and the xt8 have the same speed over 500mbps? Or xt8 is a little faster??

    • @landpet

      Over Ethernet they should be the same, over WiFi the XT8 should support faster speeds. The ET8 is even faster, I reviewed that as well

    A question which is slightly off topic: What is the difference getting a ASUS ZenWifi system (pre-configured mesh system) vs combining 2 ASUS AiMesh-enabled routers? Assuming the specifications are similar, say Wifi 6, dual band. I am looking to use wireless backhaul if that matters. The consideration is that the ZenWifi system is more expensive compared to combining 2 AiMesh routers

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 роки тому +1

      No problem! In theory, there's not supposed to be a difference but in my mind it's better to get the mesh system. Here's why: when a mesh system is created, it's tested as a complete system so if there are problems, it's easier to find. In addition, when there are updates, it usually involves every device. Where as two separate routers while I'm sure are tested to some degree, I don't think they test them quite as much because it's less likely they will be paired vs the mesh system. In addition, updates for different routers should you go that route will come at different times. I prefer the mesh system and think of it as getting a cheaper price for getting a "combo pack"

    Does the wireless backhaul on the XT8 benefit 2.4 GHz devices, like Ring cams?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 роки тому

      Ring camera doesn’t need much bandwidth. The wireless backhaul is really for the secondary XT8 device to provide better speeds to every device that is connecting to it. I can say yes, it does but that ring camera doesn’t need much bandwidth. But when you’re on your tablet, laptop, phone etc that may require more bandwidth depending on what your doing, there will be more bandwidth available compared to a dual band mesh like the XD4 making your internet speeds better

      Every home and use case is different so I will give my general recommendations.
      If you want something good that’s budget friendly then I recommend TP-Link like the new XE75, XE5300 or XE75 Pro. They are all very similar to each other, XE75 Pro has a slight advantage which may not apply to you (has one fast 2.5Gbps port) compared to the other two.
      If you want the best of the best, price aside the ASUS ET12 Pro or Netgear Orbi RBKE963.
      If you’re using wired backhaul, I think the Deco XE5300 is probably the optimal choice. You can check out other Deco options as well like the X20 or X55 if you want super budget.

    Great video, very in-depth! Additional question: I hook up gateway XD4 to a switch to do wired backhaul - clear. BUT If i want to hook up network audio or TV as well near the node XD4, can I also use another switch? So I connect gateway via swith to another switch (different part of the home) and the node XD4 there? :D

    • @landpet
      @landpet  Рік тому

      Thanks! Great question, simple answer is yes. The most important thing is Modem -> Gateway XD4 -> After this point, it's almost all fair game. So you can go Modem -> Gateway XD4 -> switch -> switch -> XD4 and you will still be fine.
      There is a limit that's placed by the Subnet mask but that's getting much more into detail and that limit is 253 (255 but 2 are reserved) granted I don't think the XD4 can handle that many devices so this is not something you need to worry about unless you have a ton of devices.

    Quick question. Can I do a wired backhaul on the XT8 using existing powerline adapters I have, or would I be better off keeping it wireless using the triband?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 роки тому

      Yes you can use existing powerline adapters to make it wired backhaul. But it depends how fast it can go, you may or may not be better off going over wireless backhaul. It also depends on your internet speeds, for my internet speeds, I can get full speeds over wireless so it just depends based on your location and your internet speeds. You can try both, the XT8 automatically detects one or another, you literally just plug in an ethernet cable or remove it. It will configure it automatically.

    1. Would that affect the performance of the main XT8 Router?
    2. Will it affect the AiProtection or security software?
    3. How many devices does the XD4 support comfortably? I have a dozen of IP cameras and IOT devices that are connected at all times.

      I can't do that video cause I no longer have these.
      1. No it will not affect the performance of the main XT8 router
      2. That's a good question, I don't know. You may be able to stick with the AiProtection Pro since that's the main router but I'm not sure
      3. It should handle a dozen very comfortably. I don't know what the limit would be but I'll take a very rough guess and say more than 30 but that in connection with your XT8 should handle a lot more devices.

      WiFi devices can’t typically get full speeds, that’s been my experience. Assuming you connecting a computer via Ethernet gets you your full speeds, WiFi will almost always be slower. The issue is that WiFi uses half duplex and shares across other WiFi devices, so there’s bound to be slowdowns. Sounds like you’re doing everything right

    Really good video and appreciate the info.
    Was just wondering if it's possible to just plug the ASUS XT8 into an existing router (The ISP won't let us not use it) and use that and additional Asus XT8 in a mesh config?

    Thanks for this review. I currently have a Nest wifi router with three old google wifi pucks as points. I have been frustrated with the drop in speed on the google system that a lot of users are experiencing after an update a year ago, it almost seems like its being throttled. Google doesn't know or care what the problem is and just suggest a factory resets which works but only temporarily. Anyway, I am done with them and moving on. I currently have Starlink beta (thanks Elon!) and while they target 150mbps down right now they are aiming for 1gbps (with a long term target is 10gbps!) so I'd like a little future proofing for 1gb speed. I have cat6&7 cable to all areas I would like a mesh point to be so judging by your video it seems the best choice would be the ZenWiFi AX Mini XD4 (I don't have enough devices to warrant the need for a 2nd 5ghz band if not using for a wireless backhaul on the XT8). I can't seem to find a one pack of either the router or the point/node to expand coverage if needed, but I guess with the Asus AiMesh I could just add any compatible Asus router to expand reach.

    Great video. I just set up the XD4 for my brother at his house. 2-story long house with detached garage. Hub at one end of the house, node-1 at the far end (35') of the house and node-2 in the garage (behind house to one end, think L shape). Without node-1, the bedrooms upstairs and at the far end of the house, had poor coverage. With it, signal strength is flat (good) across all floors and even outside in the front and back yards.
    Now I'm wondering how this system would work in my more square house, with the hub in my basement (where my current WAN connection is), node-1 on the first floor (where my AC-RT68u in AP mode is) and node-2 on the 2nd floor where I don't have an AP. So signal from there to the AP is about 90%.

      Also, this line won't be connected to cable signal as that will be bypassed in the cable box, so should be a cleaner signal and not have to worry about signal going out into the neighborhood, even though they make filters for that.

    Maybe a dumb question if it was explained in video and I overlooked it. If I have the Asus XT8, with one connected to the modem directly, and the other other side of a 2 story home with only power, because it's a Wireless backhaul and it has a Tri-Band, on wireless devices (like phones, tablet, laptops) it was getting full speeds. But what about a desktop connected to the secondary node via ethernet-- Would that device get full speeds too being wired ethernet? Pretty much can't do a wired backhaul in my home, and having had the Asus ZenWifi mini, wired to the satellite via ethernet on desktop PC across the home, I was getting around 180Mbps where I too have SPectrum at 400Mbps. If I just got the Asus XT8, because it's a Tri Band, it would give me full speeds on both the main router and the node?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 роки тому +1

      1. If you connect your desktop via ethernet to the secondary device, you will basically get the equivalent speeds of some WiFi devices being right next to it.
      2. If you get the Asus XT8, you would get full speeds on the main router, you "can" also get full speeds on the secondary one however this is dependent on how close the secondary XT8 is to the primary XT8. In my case, it was about 40 ft away with a couple walls, if you place it farther away, you may not get those full speeds. Placement is important, if placed correctly, you can absolutely get full speeds on the secondary ASUS XT8 as well.

    • @erzascralet48

      @@landpet Okay, so just wanted to say you have an ideal condition home. My home, 2,700ish two story home. From looking at front door, back left corner is the modem now, and I'm front top right of home-- COmplete opposite side. I decided to get the TP Link Deco X68 from your review as it offered good Triband performance, even if lower than other devices. Also was $200 less. Set it all up as a Wireless backhaul, thinking that dedicated 5Ghz would do some magic as it did for you. Nope. All laptops were getting like 45-65 Mbps down, and I got Spectrum which is 400/20 speeds. Wired ethernet to the unit in my room with that wireless backhaul I was peaking at around 110Mbps for the first 2 seconds of the speed test, and would ALWAYS go down and finish at around 70-80Mbps. Yes, I did the firmware update it needed, and checked for updates and it was up to date. Revert BACK to my old setup-- The 2017 Google Wifi 3 pack. Same kind of thing, but as you explain, it's just one acting as router, and two acting as a node or satellite. Wifi devices in the same spot were getting 50-78Mbps, so about same speeds, but the wired desktop to the one node was getting consistently 97-102Mbps. EVery time, no weird peaks and dipping down. So a (now) $199 made in 2017 AC1200 Dual band mesh wifi performs better than a 2021 AX3600 Triband mesh system? Makes no sense to me, and TP Link made the original GOogle On Hub in collab, and does good routers, so I'm just at a loss. I figure my solution is in the fall, when we can give up the fax my Dad needs, just move the modem into my room since I have a coax line here not being used and I'll get the 400Mbps in my room, and his simple needs can do the 80ish Mbps and be fine. Regardless of me not understanding why MY setup isn't getting anywhere near your benchmarks and all, I truly appreciate your thoroughness and honest reviews. Earned and will keep a sub!

      I agree. All my tests from the Asus ET8 have been mainly local speed tests. So the last year and a half or so.

    Can you do a comparison video of Deco X20 vs Asus XD4 please. Thanks

      I'm probably going to skip the Deco X20. My next one is going to be the Deco X68. X20 and XD4 are similar in specs, can't go wrong either way. I may lean more towards the X20 because they advertise more range (X60 was phenomenal, still my favorite dual band mesh) and they have 2 ethernet ports on each.

    I have bought this product but unfortunately I am deeply disappointed. The units keep disconnecting from the each other and in some cases they go back to set up mode. Speed is all over the place. I am not sure what is wrong since I did an extensive search before I buy them but I am now deeply disappointed

      Possibly a defective unit? Can you replace it? If you lost confidence in Asus, the Eero Pro 6 and TP Link X68 are other good choices as well.

    Sorry for the stupid question: honestly I never understood what means the number after “ax” (1800,3000,6000). A major value correspond to a faster internet connection or only a major speed in local network data transfer?? If I want a mesh system only for internet usage (with a gigabit connection), an ax1800 system is enough or it limits my speeds? Thank you!!

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 роки тому +1

      That's actually a great question. Almost want to make a video to explain it. I just may lol
      Short answer:
      The AX1800 will limit your speeds over wifi, if you want to get closer to your max speeds over wifi (which it still won't get you gigabit). Get the ASUS ET8 (ua-cam.com/video/cqcJ6oP6Ky0/v-deo.html)
      Long Answer:
      Wi-Fi AX is the Wi-Fi standard name, otherwise known as Wi-Fi 6.
      The previous generation was known as Wi-Fi AC or Wi-Fi 5.
      The newest is Wi-Fi 6E which is the ASUS ET8
      So every router has a speed rating, AX1800 is an example of this.
      -The AX portion tells the user that this is a Wi-Fi 6 router.
      -The 1800 is a summation of either 2 numbers if it's a dual band router (like the XD4) or can be a summation of 3 numbers if it's a triband router (like the XT8). "Typically" 1800 indicates it's a dual band router because it's a low number for Wi-Fi 6. Tri-band routers typically have higher numbers when it comes to Wi-Fi 6.
      -Breaking this down further, the 1800 (in the case of the ASUS XD4) is the fastest speed of both bands since it's a dual band. The XD4 supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz, each of these bands (or frequencies) support a theoretical maximum speed. Again specifically on the ASUS XD4, on Wi-Fi 6 (2.4GHz), it can support a wireless speed of 574 Mbps and on the 5GHz band, it can support a maximum speed of 1201 Mbps. When you add these two numbers and get them close to a nice clean round number, you get 1800. 574 + 1201 = 1775 or 1800 if we are rounding up.
      Devices like your phone, tablets, laptops typically use the 5GHz band to connect to your mesh wifi, therefore they can take advantage of the faster speeds (a theoretical max of 1201Mbps). Whereas security cameras, smart switches, things of that nature typically connect on the 2.4GHz and are limited to a theoretical max of 574Mbps. In reality, over Wi-Fi, you almost never see speeds that close to the max, they're typically a lot less. So if you have fast internet, something like gigabit, then getting a router like the XD4, even though it can in theory support the full gigabit speeds over wifi, typically the speeds you get are a lot less. In addition, your device like your phone also has its own limit of the fastest speeds it can support, so even if the router can support faster speeds, it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get full gigabit speeds over wifi.
      As if that wasn't enough, there's more. If you get a dual band mesh wifi like the XD4 and you connect them via Wireless Backhaul. Well now, the XD4 devices need to connect to each other to create the network. In this case, there is no third band, a dedicated channel where they can talk to each other. So they are sharing the other band(s) with all the other wifi devices. Well this results in slowing down wifi devices even further because unlike ethernet, wifi devices actually share local bandwidth. The more wifi devices you connect, the more the local network itself slows down (including the internet speeds, cause that's shared as well). On top of that, some mesh wifi's have "recommended" limits for the number of wifi devices it can support. Getting a triband in this case, you have an extra band that's typically not shared and that doesn't slow down your wifi devices as much, again over wireless backhaul. Even in wired backhaul, the triband routers can use that third dedicated band to allow wifi devices to connect to it, to alleviate some burden on the other bands.
      Getting gigabit speeds over ethernet is a lot easier cause there is no interference from anything, it's a digital cable that pretty much delivers amazing speeds.

      Thank you!!! I will wait for your new video about this!! So, if I understood well, if I have a download speed (on internet) of 800/900mbps, a 1800 will be enough I think, right?

      A mesh system between XT8 and XD4 is no problem (i have both in one mesh), but they must have the latest firmware. But a mixture between ethernet backhaul and wifi backhaul is only possible when one band on each is sacricifed.

    Don't waste your time running Wifi as it is very slow and not consistent!! I run cat6a cable throughout my house. Have a Synology 8-bay NAS with 8 Seagate fast exnos drives running raid 6 array with intel dual 10Gbe ethernet in running link aggregation on both ports to my 10Gbe switch. All my pcs are also connected to 10Gbe network switch and they are running fast Samsung M.2 SSD along with intel dual 10Gbe ethernet cards. I get SUSTAINED transfer speeds of 1,200 MegaByte or 1.2GB per second!!! With that speed that can move a 4.7GB DVD movie through the network in under 5 seconds.
