  • In this video, I run through a basic Arch Linux install. For the purpose of this install the "linux-firmware" package will take care of everything I need for the virtual machine to work out of the box. Depending on your hardware, results may vary. As mentioned in the video, I recently installed on a laptop and didn't have to do anything extra and did not have any issues with hardware functionality.
Technically, the following packages will get you up and running with a functional system: base, linux, and linux-firmware. See the wiki for more info/exceptions.
    Arch Install Guide: wiki.archlinux.org/title/Inst...
    iwctl guide: wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd#...

If your run into issues or have general questions, leave a comment and I will try to assist.

This is by far the best tutorial I've found.

Subscribed and liked! I spent all the last night bashing my head on my keyboard trying to install manually arch as a total beginner for the challenge and most guide I was following had some slight difference which was not compatible with me or they just did "archinstall" which is cool for a beginner but not what I was looking for... Even tried to set it up by myself with the help of Gemini (yeah I know lol...) and following the wiki as much as I could but as someone that kinda understand few technical things, was completely dumbfounded when I saw how complicated was the wiki without explaining really in layman terms... Maybe that's just me and I just didn't look too much into it surely due to lack of sleep but that's your guide that finally let me install arch without problem so a big thank you to you and now I guess I just have to look how to set up a desktop env (backing up before because I don't wanna mess up my only working arch 😅)

if you're installing arch for the *first* time, I recommend using archinstall; its built into the base arch install media, and its way easier than what is shown here. You mentioned that you wanted to do it the manual way and that's all well and good, but I think it's healthy to slowly work your way up to that. Or you could try to learn how to swim by jumping in the deep end, and that might actually work for some people, who knows!

@@oneilmw Hey, thanks for the reply! And yeah, I didn't need to use the archinstall script at all, just went with that guide then kept going by myself afterwards by setting up iw3m, a bar, ranger etc etc and still use it today on a VM, just found an old desktop PC and plan to install arch on it as well and try NixOS on a VM so I can still use my arch install while learning how Nix works in a VM, I genuinely love the journey so far and honestly think that it was a good idea to install it manually because now when something completely break (like when I tried hyprland at first) I know how to use the tty and don't feel completely lost 😅

Subbed because of this video. Please continue this as a series walking though building up a full desktop environment on top of arch (WM, DE, etc) thanks.

I'm thinking about a very basic WM install. Maybe Sway? Unless there's interest in a specific DE install on an Arch box?

@@x80nix Yes! I'm looking into sway myself (now that I've got ubuntu/gnome up, running, and configured) now that i think i've got enough of a handle on the arch install steps to attempt it.

Is your connection active? Can you ping archlinux.org? Are you using wireless?
