When traveling internationally, I typically order my foreign currency from my local Wells Fargo Branch or AAA about a week before my trip and carry it with me. It's good to just have a baseline amount to carry like you would at home (you know how your mom would say always keep a little cash on you in case of emergency).
Wells Fargo gives terrible rates to exchange dollars to pesos calling it a handling fee. They also cannot give you specific peso denominations, they will provide mixed denominations.
Hey V, thank you for the great tip. I just arrived in PV and used the ATM to do the exchange and it took me literally 2 minutes. On the otherhand, I did see alot of people lined up at the Money Exchange desk. I felt like telling them to stay away but I am sure I would have been the one to look like a fool. I guess certain things are just better left un said. Anyways, thanks again and I enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work! 👍🙏
I think it would be cheaper if you exchange it at a currency exchange at the airport because they wont charge you a fee like WU or ATMs for their services to transfer or withdraw. You can always negotiate the currency exchange rate and most of the time they can make you a better price for your dollars.
most of the banks deliver money to your house, just ask your bank to send you pesos. I just did that so i wont have to change money in mexico for the first couple of days untill i found the safest and the best way to do so.
Even your own US bank local ATM ? I don’t remember some years back if the Citibank charged me or not ? I don’t think so . Just because you’re in Mexico they’re going to charge me for taking my own money …
In my experience, using the bank atm in Mexico, while they may not charge a fee or even if it’s a low fee, they buy the dollar for so much less. When the dollar was around 20 pesos, the atm at the bank only exchanged it to me for 17 pesos to the dollar at most.
Western Union is very good I received N$20.59 rate was N$20.76 works well , I normally send myself $650 to $1000 , Walmarts or Calmax store to receive money while in Mex
Could you share the names of some banks we should be on the lookup for? I imagine it's not going to be obvious for tourists to tell the difference between bank atm and some other private atm. Thanks for sharing this video.
Would we select Elektra to pick up at banco azteca? I called banco azteca and they referred me to Elektra's customer service number and wanted to double check before I selected that in western union
I just took out 7000 pesos from the Scotiabank ATM close to the Plaza de las Armas... it charged me an extra 12% on top of the advertised exchange rate! when I arrived I took out the same amount at the airport and it cost me $477 Canadian. today it cost me $512 Canadian. people were telling me I was crazy to use the machine at the airport but now this one that is right in the bank charged me more! I dont know if it because it is in the center of the tourist area or what but now I am confused about the best place to use an ATM.
@@VallartaLife well yes that is part of it but they also charged a specific fee for that which I agreed to before proceeding. then as the last step before they gave me the money it stated that an additional 12% was going to be added to the exchange rate. basically it seems like a way to rip off tourists. I am in Bucerias now and my strategy to save on withdrawal fees is to rake out enough cash to last me 1 month at a time, hopefully the machines here wont have that same scam!
Very informative video. I wish the tour industry here in America, would show this to us when they plan our vacation. This video would be great also on any State Department, websites.
I agree. I thought i should exchange money at the airport currency exchange, which is actually one of the worst to do it at 😱 If you actually plan ahead, your bank in the USA or wherever can usually order you some pesos at a good rate, but it takes some time

Planning to go to Puerto Vallarta in December (first time) can I get you as my tour guide/advisor while I’m there to help me out on all the necessary things that need to be done. for a fee of course. I’m planning to stay a month or more. Thank you, I would appreciate a feedback!!😊
They usually charge an excessive amount since it is in the airport. Same goes when renting a car from the airport they are more expensive than going to a car rental place
I was going to ask that exact question. Is it a flat fee. Like in Greece it was a lot $20 if I got $100-$400 in EUROs I would have ordered from bank, but completely forgot and am going to Nuevo Vallarta tomorrow. I justness the money for tips and if I leave the grounds. Might just go get $200 in small bills and tip in dollars. Opening a mexican bank account seems a bit much, for a 5 day trip. Great info though. I'll find a bank.
A person replying mentioned buying pesos from Wells Fargo before going on your trip,,,,,DO NOT DO THIS,,,,this entire video is about best exchange rates,,,,Wells Fargo will give you the worst exchange rates, even worse than the airport
Very helpful tips - thank you! Viri, off topic, I see in all your videos your eyebrows are perfect - where do you get them done? We will be in PV next week and I would love to visit that place... thank you!
I am traveling to PV soon and was thinking about doing the western union but did you choose ‘any argent location’ for you cash pick up? In order to use Branco Aztec?
Thank you for this video! I’ll be going to PV soon. It’s first time in Mexico can you give us examples of paying with pesos. How much an what bills you would pay with? For example restaurants stores bars etc.
Most restaurants, bars, souvenir stores take credit cards. You only need cash for tips, taxi rides, any street vendors or street food. You are fine with any bills 500 or less. If you need more cash once here you can always take out money in a bank atm here with you bank card.

@@VallartaLife only downside with this method is the horrible rates. To some people peace of mind is more important so it is fair to list.
I've done through my hotel, my personal bank, and at the airport. I actually got a really good exchange rate at the airport in Mexico City.
Thank you so much for this information..Be SAFE

You need your debit card to pull out money from your account to pesos. It automatically converts US dollars to pesos

If I plan to stay a few weeks here and there because we plan to buy and build, how do I get a Mexico ID to open a Mexican bank account?
To get a Mexican ID you need a permanent residency or Mexican citizenship

So at the ATM, if I have USD in my card (CashApp cash card) will it withdraw pesos?
The Cash App Card only works in the US
