Landmark Series Rides at PASIC '23 - Timothy Roberts
Holy Shite! Great job, man! You really opened that cymbal up- it really breathes now. Nice wash, and I dig the rivets.
Interesting take! I'll be picking up a vintage Avedis Zildjian Medium 22" Ride from the 70's this weekend for only $153. Not so much to collect, but considering the sound and price compared to the other options right now, I think it's the right path for me at this fork in the road. I think it'll compliment my 14" A New Beats and 18" A Medium Thin crash quite well!
impressive
When you first showed the "after" I thought you were kidding!! Wow, what an incredible transformation. Excellent craftsmanship! I bought that XS20 ride when they first came out, and what a gong it was!! The XS20 hi hats were also super heavy but sounded surprisingly great.
I have a 19 inch avedis China high… how can I make brighter, seems kinda too low or dull. Any thoughts?
I still play my xs20 hats, the other cymbals in that line I did not keep around the ride was ok but the crashes were very clangy
Hi Timothy, you certainly have in the shop sticks with plastic tips, it would be interesting to hear them, sure they would pull out more sound and maybe turn those cymbals into dry, silent yet fancy models. Maybe you don't like those sticks and I do not, but just to hear how much "life" you can get out of them...
Can extra dry cymbals actually be regular dark cymbals with bunch of moongel/tape on the back? That way it can actually be a nice ride that projects pretty well or a pie with zero sustain if muffled.
sweet dry. i like them.... but i haven't found a hand made pie i didn't like.
They sound amazing
Great playing!
Dryer than Gandhis flipflops, crashes like a parked car
That flat ride is insanely nice
Loved your comment about not thinking binary, and finding a way to kind of marry dark and bright characteristics. I wonder how you'd describe the 22" Carmine Appice signature ride from Sabian, feels like to me there's a connection
Reminiscent of my 80's Zildjian K Custom Dry. I like the "click" definition but in my opinion the key is the series of overtones. Zildjians of that era could have garish overtones...
And they each possess enough interest as-is to be an FX cymbal! Can't wait to hear where you take them.
It is positively fascinating watching you work.
Thanks!
they are not dry enough, get back to the vault
haha yes sir!
They sound like my Sabian Jack Dejohnette Signature ride which I love
Too dry? I like them, they have their place.
I’m looking into dry cymbals now, after seeing some of my more “wet” cymbals drown out vocals in bands I’m in. These sound very dry, and whilst for me as a drummer they are losing some texture because they’re so dry, in a band mix I can totally see that I’ll be able to communicate the rhythmic pattern without drowning out any singer. Cheers for the demo, another super helpful video!
Thanks for watching!
That's a flippin' awesome outcome. Sounds amazing. 🤙
I loved that 22 at the end
super sick
When I think of super dry I think of Jack DeJohnette's Sabian Encore cymbals and his signature ride.
They sound like metal trash can lids.
To each his own! I do agree that they are too dry, which is why I'm reworking them.
They are so cool Timothy! Almost a shame to change them. I am sure you will make them great, but you could market them as the driest ever, lol. I just subscribed too.
These sound like the ride cymbals on cruise ships on the pool deck that get covered in salt water for years and of turn green from it.
Yes!
Go Geoff!!
Odly satisfying to watch
My man Geoff !! Great to see. Thanks Tim. Awesome vid
They sound great. 👍
this isn’t too dry; this just just dry enough. i never find rides that try to do this sound and it’s what i’ve been looking for for 2.5 years now
Amen
Right on!
get Wade "The Drum Thing" Dankpods on the phone lmaooooo
He would have a field day
But why sizzles in - EVERYTHING... Geez... Enough already lol
haha yes it can get excessive
I'd call it short decay time. In synthesizer terminology, any sound that is percussive, with an attack and a sound that dies out after a while, has decay, not sustain. In that context, sustain is a level of a permanent sound, what an organ has, as opposed to a piano.
dig it
put em on a hi hat stand
Man I love these cymbal talks!
Could you try putting another single lathing circle above the sweet spot hit zone? Like away from the centre of the bell like Inches using a three quarter inch size extra lathing circle.
Yeah, that's not a bad idea at all!
Well the answer is, none more dry 💁♂ When dry reaches "plate" like, it loses me.....but, it is a cool character, if that's what you love. Jack all the way!. That darker crust gives you a lot more range to work with. Shave off a little, half of it, half crust at the outer edge, half at the center, etc. It's a great starting point. Looking forward to hear where you take these.
Those are pretty dry, but at least they're rides, so it's not too bad. Plus, I think you can get some high frequency back. OTOH, I cut down a cracked 17" crash to 15" and after re-tapering it's now too dry. I think I lathed off the most musical layers and now there's no way to add any crunch back in. I tried bridge hammering and nothing much changed. It sounds okay otherwise but doesn't really work with my other A. Zildjians.
It could need more hammering to re-compress the outer layers of the bronze!
@@ReverieDrumCo Cool, I've been trying that in stages, I'll keep going. Thanks!
Love it. When in the right place... Great!
Beautiful sounding cymbals as always brother. But as dryness is concerned, I think my 1st edition Jack Dejonette 20" Sabian Ride still has them beat. lol
haha I bet!
I would say a 'dry' cymbal produces a sound which doesn't change much over time when struck and doesn't develop wash, pitch change and too many overtones. Also, the sustain is usually pretty short. These are drier than a Dry Martini.
Dig it!
these remind me of the XIST dry dark line everyone is playing in my local scene. super trashy on top of the dryness. I like where you're going with this. if you could make these have a lot of the same qualities as an xist dry dark but with less abrasiveness, more shimmer and an overall lower volume for small room playing I'd be very interested in buying a set.
I could definitely nail that vibe. I've done it many times.
Never too dry!
Interestingly, their dryness emphasizes the roominess of the drums.
agreed!
Too dry for me but Jack DeJohnette would probably like it, and nobody swang harder than him.
TRUTH
Woah...now that's dry! 😊 Could you cheat and do some very sparce lathing on the top to cut some of the dryness down? Or rivets of course! Haha Ill be interested in the salt wash version i think.
Definitely! That's the plan.
Damn!!!!
