The fact that Scarlet Johanson was chosen for Ghost in the Shell shoes that this whole argument of "meritocracy" is nonsense... anyone that believes that Hollywood's casting is based on who's actually good is lying to themselves. They hire the seat fillers. The popular actor/actress that's going to get as many people to come watch the movie as possible. That's how capitalism works. So let's not pretend that all the White actors that get hired are there purely because they earned it by being good. Especially when we see how many shitty to mediocre actors are making bank on some of the biggest movies these days.

yes meritocracy may not always happen but it doesn't mean that it's racism. it's economics 101; who is currently in demand and is thus marketable to audiences.

You’re confusing the way Hollywood works with how this competition works. The competition was a merit based competition. What Hollywood does is a different thing all together. Matt is 100% right in this context. That black lady was trying to violate to rules of the competition in order to push a political agenda. She deserved to get shut down.

Hollywood has been known to purposely pick white actors...in the PAST. That's what the whole diversity scuffle was about in the 90s, and it made major headway toward getting representation across races on screen. Today, races other than white are OVERrepresented in US film relative to their actual population ratios. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, it just makes the mix look slightly more mixed than it is.
Scarlett Johanssen is one of the greatest voice actors of her generation. But simply because she's white, she'll get hatred for being popular. There are lots of extremely popular celebrities who aren't white and nobody hates on them for making it big. Yet white-haters conveniently forget they exist. Dwayne Johnson, Will Smith, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah Winfrey, Kanye West, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, I got these off a Google search for "most popular celebrities". The list it returned was about half black, a lot more than 13.4%.
You've probably seen people who were dismayed that they got a job, trophy, role, etc. due to their race, not their performance. And every time, they were probably black, maybe asian. How come white people never gripe about that? Is it because whites are all too happy to have things handed to them while other races have a work ethic? Or is it possible that nobody is actually picking people just for being white?

I think it gets frustrating to hear people constantly talking about being treated equally yet constantly refusing to act equally .If you hire a white man based on merit and a black man gets turned away because he didn't have the qualification you still get labeled a racist . I don't think it's discomfort it's frustration . Why can't it be a room full of people sitting in a room discussing the best person for the job without making it about race ? +Lee O I think we have here a really frustrating and difficult circumstance where the very real need for diversity in the workplace is clashing with the very real need for a competition to be based solely upon merit. Effie's observation was _absolutely sound_ regarding the treatment of that character and scene and, as an experienced Producer, she should have been taken very seriously in her observation. Regrettably, what would make perfect sense in a real-world situation (seeking a sensitive filmmaker to treat the subject of the film) makes less sense when a number of people are competing - presumably on a level playing field - for the opportunity to do so.
Competition = a mandatory level playing field. Diversity in the workplace = a recognition of the exact opposite being the case. You can see how these two forces cannot resolve in one narrow situation.

    • @Grymmorgan
      @Grymmorgan 9 років тому +1

+Sky Sound Was not aware of this, nor have I considered it thus far. This would certainly give me some pause, though I'd have to be able to look at all the past contestants, and how many represented minority groups, and how they performed in the competition to see if it felt there was some bias in how they were evaluated. Obviously, if there were very few women or POC in the first place, you'd expect a majority of whites to win.
But _that_ situation would indicate a very _different_ - and equally serious - problem with the competition, then, wouldn't it? ;^/

There are homophobic parents who send their own gay kids to conversion therapy, and men that can still be sexist or misogynist even though they all have a mother/wife/daughters.
A person's proximity to a minority or disenfranchised group, doesn't exempt them from scrutiny. I know of people who place Obama, Oprah, Beyonce, Morgan Freeman, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, etc. in a separate box from other black folk in their brains. This is called compartmentalization.
White people will associate certain black people they know personally in their lives (or from TV) and assign them as "exceptions to the rule" - but when they see black people on the street, they treat them as stereotypes. And yet despite doing this, they'll convince themselves that they're not racist, just bc they have a black friend or they like a black celebrity. This level of cognitive dissonance and lack of self-awareness is a pervasive issue among white people.

Well if i understand well this ""debate"" For every work the talent is less important than gender or skin colour So for each work, each corporation should have 50% female employees 50 % male employees with 25 % diversity by gender (and we also have to think about handicaped persons) But the "problem" is that there are more white than other colour in the USA so mathematically this is not possible to keep those percentage. So If you take people for their tallent Ideally they have equal chances to get a job.

She was trying to express that people of diverse backgrounds more than often, have very different experiences than their white counterparts. Therefore, they would be able to convey the story, and get the audience to experience the characters from the perspective of someone who is also of a diverse background.
Damon is expressing disinterest in that whole idea and/or concept. The director they ultimately chose was white. The cast of the movie was white. At one point the only person of color in the movie was going to be a driver. Discomfort with that came from that same woman of color.

I think everyone has grossly misunderstood Damon's position. He, admittedly, is a little to blame for not being clearer about what he is trying to say, but even after his awkward rhetoric, I think his point is obvious:
There is a need and capacity to seek diversity in front of the cameras _of Project Greenlight,_ just as there is everywhere film is made. But that need does not - and, indeed, _cannot_ - extend behind the cameras _of Project Greenlight_ (and only in the case of the filmmakers themselves, not members of the crew) because _Project Greenlight is a competition!_ It's a contest, with rules, and the rules are there to assure as much fairness as possible. In fact, there has already been a layer of preferential treatment built into the show in that every contestant is an untested, budding filmmaker, rather than a wealthy or accomplished veteran. This is a chance for new filmmakers to win an opportunity to work and be seen.
Damon's point is not that there's no need for diversity behind the camera. It's that you cannot inject preferential treatment into any kind of _contest or competition._ Can you imagine if State Lotteries chose winners based not on a random draw, but on race, gender, or economic need? Or if horse races could only ever be won by an equal number of male and female horses? Or Las Vegas was required to allow a certain percentage of minorities to win table and card games proportionate to the percentage of the population their race represents? It would make a travesty of gaming and competition.
The nice thing about a blind competition, wagering games, or skill-based contest is that it should have _already eliminated_ inherent biases from its rules. That being said, a "face to face" competition like PGL is not "blind;" it certainly does allow room for bias. But I don't think anyone is accusing Damon and crew of choosing a specific filmmaker over another for reasons of bias.
Instead, I believe they're just reading a grand statement into something that was, obviously from context, a very specific observation limited only to the situation in _this show_ …not Hollywood in general.
Now…all that being said…I still think a white pimp beating up the only lady of color in the story is pretty effed up. But that's a whole 'nother subject…

***** On the contrary. We have no idea what Matt _truly_ said, due to time constraints and editing. That being said, I agree that, if indeed he was making the point that I think he was (a point I believe to be valid, though hardly the last word on the subject of discrimination in cinema), that he did a poor job of clearly expressing himself. He was glib, and left himself open to criticism and ridicule.
Nonetheless, I think knowing a person's motivation and true intention is crucial to understanding their meaning. And dismissing or vilifying people based on individual statements - and, sometimes, even individual _word choices_ - is hardly rational…to say nothing of an utterly ineffective way to develop a constructive dialogue on any subject.

+Grymmorgan I think as well as Matts point is, I think herpoint was just as well. Such is that she believes the best person for the job would be that of a non-white person so that when directing such a scene as a white pimp beating the only girl of color, the director would be more careful about how the scene plays out. True, a white directer could direct the seen well I'm sure too, but it's possible a black directer could do it better because they grew up that way. No matter how hard any white person tries, they have no idea what black people go through in their lives because white people wake up everyday being white, they go throughout their day being white, and interactions with other people as white people.

I think he is right for the most part. What he said might not be very articulate or complete, but in an ideal world people are hired based on their merit alone, not on the color of their skin. Having said that of course ethnicity and culture offers perspective, but the very first consideration should be their talent as a director. I think he was just giving her pushback in a mostly off the cuff creative conversation, and it is being taken out of context for entertainment purposes. This is not a reason for people to freak out on the usually thoughtful, understanding, compassionate, and politically concerned person that he seems to have been in the past.

Always statements are almost always troublesome.
I would vote for a candidate to a certain extent because they are black, but I think this discussion is in a long series of discussions about that script and whether they even wanted to keep that character the way it is. And the director that he wanted was the one that was happy with the script the way it was. I think that a director doesn't need to be of the particular ethnicity to portray ethnicity, race, diversity, racism etc. And that is because an artist is someone who learns or attempts to learn how to objectively relate to all people in a way that is measured and fair or not so for artistic expression, and hopeful the result is something that teaches people tolerance and truth at the same time.
Hollywood obviously has issues when it comes to race and racism, and sometimes in the content itself. Consider like in Cold Mountain they replaced Ruby with a white woman. If you read the book you can clearly tell that Ruby is mixed raced, and this is what adds tension to the friendship that she has with Ada- the fact that the war has been going on, and they come together and make their own little piece of heaven and family. It adds layers of emotional tension and release. And by getting rid of the color of her skin they ruined that movie imo.
The US itself obviously has a history of racism- institutionalized racism exists in all regions and walks of life. But in this particular discussion in this particular competition he is simply saying that if they wanted the competition to select from minorities then that is what the competition should have been- to select from minorities. At the same time she has a fair point about someone of a certain race possibly understanding racism and diversity in the US, but why would you let go of a Quinten Tarantino etc just because they don't match the race of one of the characters in a story.
I think there is a place for a minority director competition and Hollywood could use some perspective when it comes to race, but the first priority is the quality of the artist.

  • @tomhg38

Yeah, upload an unedited version so we can actually make up our minds as to whether Damon was being rude or not. The ideas being broached are both fine, one party (Damon) says he thinks the people who got the job were the best candidates, another group (Effie) says she wants people of ethnicity to direct. Thats a reasonable discussion to have, regardless of which side you are on.
The only issue is was Damon being disrespectful towards Effie by speaking over her, interrupting. It looks like he was, but we don't see the start of the conversation, for all I know Matt was bringing up something and Effie interrupted HIM, and then he interjected into HER interruption to clarify his point. But I have no way of knowing because the video starts with her already mid-sentence.

      @joshfox6159 8 років тому +16

Im not disagreeing with that one bit, and dont put words in my mouth, I think minorities should 100% have jobs behind the camera.
My point, and I think Damon's (in my opinion) is that people are for more aware of a lack of diversity in front of the camera than they are behind it. He might be of the mind that the best way to change that is to improve the diversity in the casting of the characters because people are aware of characters on screen more than directors or DOP'S.
Recent examples of this awareness have been seen in criticisms of the casting for; Exodus - Gods and Kings, Ghost in the Shell and Pan.Ghost in the Shell and Pan are good examples, because in both cases, the characters in question; Asian and Native Indian respectively were cast to be played by Scarlett Johansen and Rooney Mara (two women who are both white). Now of course, in the case of Pan, the anger didn't change the casting, but it didn't mean people weren't aware of it.
However, no one got angry at the fact that the director and the main writers of Pan were white, and of course, because its not seen doesn't mean its not there, but its also precisely the reason why its not as publicized.
The same can be said for Exodus, people were very mad that there was a lack of diversity in the cast - but there was a severe lack of outrage that the director and the four or so credited writers were all white.
The way society is, especially with film and TV, if you dont see it, you tend not to know it.
Now, Im not saying I agree with that mindset, but that is the way it seems to be, once people see change, they will want more - you see change on the screen and change will come off the screen.
Oh, and please dont ever put words in my mouth again, its really really unbecoming of people.

In a perfect world, it should be based on "merit". If we want to put this in perspective, we need to eliminate and not focus on race because race to me is "humanity". However, we cannot eliminate diversity from a film or casting just because someone such as the director is talented. I believe she reacted because she is not only looking for 'merit" but someone with an open mindset and an understanding of human experiences and cultural narratives. Movies are not just about white or black talented directors or actors; in essence, it is about the depiction of individual narratives, experiences, culture, traditions and values. As a visual artist, it is easier for me to decide what colour, what shape or what medium I want to explore and use. When creating a film, I feel it is more complex and not materialistic like paint. Films are a depictions of supposedly real human experiences. Each viewer that watches this show will have a different perspective based on their values, experiences and traditions. I do understand Matt Damon point of view's. Nevertheless, I just feel it is not easily said and done. With that being said, I think "merit" & "diversity" can go hand-in-hand. In my humble opinion, its a matter of perspective, narration and a little empathy along the way.
I think one person I would like to hear about this topic on "diversity" is Steven Spielberg which is a JEWISH DIRECTOR that produce and directed, "Colour Purple", which was mostly an all African American cast. This movie was beautiful done. I think we need to hear from his perspective.

This clip removes that context. So you're claim is Demonstrably false in that Damon "puts words into her mouth" (he never quoted her so this couldn't possibly be true anyways), or that Brown "didn't even mention diversity." Look at Henry Cavill, he had a horrible start but he's now the biggest star for being in Man of Steel. All the while Daniel dae Kim or Rick Yune gets no other roles for any movie.
There is money to be put behind white actors but never any behind actors like Rick Yune (John Tran in fast and the furious). It's because producers are under the belief that connection through media only exists from the pigment of ones skin. If one looks like a white person and is playing a badass cop, then the majority will be able to find connection through their skin color and features.
I mean you could try to convince me that non white people can't act. But you might have to hit me on the head a few times with a steel pipe.

Effie was 100% right about her thoughts and feelings being the only black person in a room of white people. People of color don't make race an issue because it always is an issue. Yeah, lets think of his comment this way.
When casting for movies/films ect... it is important to represent many different cultures and nationalities when possible. This better represents society as a whole and media should represent that.
When it comes to hiring someone for a job, you should hire people based on who has the highest merits.
If you are going for heart surgery and there are 5 doctors, 4 are black and 1 is white. The 4 black doctors all graduated in the top 5% of their University and each has over 10 years doing heart surgeries, whereas the white doctor just passed well enough to finish school and hasn't had his first job as a surgeon - which doctor should you choose? Is their race or skin color an important consideration in this case?
HIs only comment is that this competition is based on merit not race. Therefore, to bring up racial issues of the teams at the last moment of the competition is not being true to the nature of the contest.

This is a creative art. Not a science where people will literally die if you stray from the beaten path. Providing diverse and TRUE perspectives is what makes the art of filmmaking valuable. Could you imagine if the concept of the movie "Friday" was just given to the most technically educated filmmakers, even if that meant not having a black perspective included?... Instead, along WITH their experienced, white director, they had a black director with nothing on his resume, but would go one to direct Set it Off, Law Abiding Citizen, a Fast and Furious movie, and a Men in Black movie. And it all started because his perspective was valued in the making of his first movie.

does there need to be diversity in the military? having men women, fighting next to each other on the battlefield? despite the fact that the average male is physically stronger then the average female athlete?
look we are all different, some people will be smarter, some people may be stronger, some people can sing, some people are fearless, and of all of those traits, genetics plays a large role. so it is safe to say, that some people, on average, will be smarter, or stronger, or be more courageous, perhaps be taller, so saying that we need equal distribution of people from all groups in all the different kinds of jobs is bizarre, unrealistic, ineffective, and outright dumb.
imagine if the black dominated NBA started saying we need equal diversity, and we need more whites, aisans and Mexicans, would the quality of basketball players go up or down? it would go down of course. so why say we need more black directors if no one is stopping blacks from directing?
if i go to russia i try their vodka, if i go to france i try their wine and bread, if i go to germany i try their sausage and their cars, if i go to japan i want to meet their electronic engineers, if i go to texas i ride their horses and visit their ranches, etc.
all peoples have things that they are good at, we need not try to make russians wine as good as french wine and try to make texans vodka as good as russian vodka, and try to make american sausage as good as german sausage.
it is a waste of time and effort. embracing diversity means not discriminating by not hiring a certian people, and not selectively hiring people based ont heir race so you have an equal proportion of blacks, whites, asians, mexicans etc.
racism is racism and we need to call it out when we see it, that black women saying we need to hire a black director solely because his skin is a black color is racist. matt damon is not racist for saying we need to hire based on merit.

There is nothing about being Black that holds us back from anything. We've produced scholars of all sorts, inventors, philosophers, engineers, business men, doctors, judges, Presidents, whatever the skill or profession, we have done it. Don't mistake the constant effects of White oppression for natural genetic skill points. You missed Effie's point entirely. She was concerned about the sensitivity of the topic being handled correctly and rightly so. Black American over-sexualism has been a problem in America since before it's birth. This is led largely by White men over sexualizing Black women. It's historic. Look it up if you are that ignorant of this topic. Matt has a point to give the job to the best person. But too often in America are the White males the go to for "Best in the field" when often it has more to do with "Most relatable" to those in power making the decisions. Blacks are capable of anything. So are Latinos, and Asians, and Native Americans, and so on. To put limits on any group is wrong and bigoted. White people aren't the smartest type of people. It just so happens that some of them have the most available resources in this country. Namaste

Piankhi Zimmerman im a libertarian, so im not for putting limits on people by government, and i did not say that black people or any people have certian genetic limitations and certain genetic advantageous, my point was that on AVERAGE, meaning the genetic group as a whole, always on average does better at something and worse at others.
i also did not say white people on average are the smartest, actually white people on average are behind jews (who on average are the smartest) and north eastern aisans, (who are second place and white are third). and your right their are other reasons for this not just genetic, environment plays a huge role as well. for example jews over the period of hundreds of years have not been allowed to own land in europe, so to make money they had to invest in their intellectual capital, so they became doctors, lawyers, bankers etc. and over hundreds of years a combination of environment and genetics led them to have the highest average iq of any people, gypsies where also in the same environment and were almost treated exactly same as europeans treated jews, yet their average iq today is not anywhere near the top of the list. i suspect that is because they didnt have it in their genes (on average!).
i would honestly love to believe that intelligence is mostly due to culture and environment, because that way i know i could improve mine, but unfortunetly all the latest research shows that specifically iq, stay stable throughout your adult life, and that nothing in your environment can boost your iq, only there are things in the childs environment that can stunt your iq.
kinda like height, your genetics determine how tall you are, and not eating enough during childhood can stunt your growth, but eating more then needed will not make you taller only wider.
there are no constant effects of white oppression on blacks, that is a mystical fairy tale made up by leftists. in the 1930's 4 million of my people where wiped out in an attempted genocide in ukriane by russians, yet despite ukraine being ruled by russians until the 90's there are not signs of "russian oppression" despite all sort of racism that is rampant on both sides. i can similarily relate the black struggle to the struggle of the jews, and again show you, that after the initial horrrific crimes there is not sublte oppression.
basketball is dominated by blacks, as is football, because not only is it in black culture, but because blacks on average, have more muscle mass then whites, and usually are better athletes. im not saying no black can ever be smart enough to be a ceo or something like that. but that in a given group, more blacks will be better suited to be top athletes then ones who are suited to be top ceo's

    • @Ninjavsninja

"In a given group, more blacks and will be better suited to be top athletes then (than) ones who are suited to be top CEOs"
....... I can't disagree with you more. I know plenty of black people with very little muscle mass and athletic ability. Besides hundreds of years of slavery where there was forced breeding for various purposes and an erasing of culture might play a part in muscle mass in the states. We've had self sustaining communities, healthy economic systems, and ran our own businesses. Guess what happened to many of them? They were destroyed by white neighbors. You are grossly ignoring racism and how it affects generations and daily life in America. Look at all the violence against blacks by police officers uncovered via digital video in the past few years (like shooting a 12 year old boy with a toy gun and then claiming this small child looks 21). These aren't special cases. We've been talking about them for decades. Race riots, the CIA and FBI attacking black communities and their enrichment groups, the KKK a terrorists organization allowed to function in the states nearly unchallenged, having a Black sounding name can keep you from a job or a business loan, actually government programs built to help citizens but exclude minority workers, the corrupt legal cycle built to keep blacks in and out of jail, lynchings for being too successful, or just walking down the wrong street, or whistling at a white woman, police violence. This country is centuries deep in oppressing black people and much of it still happens, just in different contexts. We're only decades from Jim Crow laws and it's recoil. 400 years of cataloged oppression vs 40 years of let's all get along and try to live up to what America is supposed to stand for. 400 vs 40.
Get off it. No signs of Russian oppression? Have you watched the news in the past couple years?
IQ can increase. It's mental exercise. People do it. Especially when they are young. Some are more gifted than others. In any area this is the case. I have a great muscle structure, but I'm also an athlete and would be one even if I didn't. Growing up I was always one of the smarter kids, with a generally higher IQ. This was part natural and part nurture. I was lucky in having more resources, better schools, more opportunities than most. I can clearly see the difference between how I grew up and how others just as smart and able as myself grew up. I'm an entrepreneur and good with languages, though I just started bruising up again on my Japanese. The mind and spirit are stronger than the physical. Don't get caught up in Fox News like propaganda. Oppression of blacks in America is real and hits every part of American life. Especially the entertainment world.

I applaud him for standing up for standards.

he clearly stated that there so be no diversity on the show...why is that? why only diversity in casting but not the show? only a racist would defend this man. he did not mean they should be chosen on merit that was his way of backtracking he stated there should be NO diversity on the show.

Even with the complete context, Matt is still off. His underlying assumption is that everyone is on the same level of the playing field, thus merit is the best way to assess these directors. There's a good chance that those people who are a minority have worked very hard to get where they are, just to have Matt and others claim a level playing field. Also, I agree that someone who is black (just as an example) knows the nuances of what it is like to be black than some white guy. This is coming from a white guy. I usually like Matt, but the whitesplaining is too real here.

+Ely Powers Bullshit. You have no proof that there is some type of of racial disadvantage (at least when it comes to the collective, there could very well be individuals whom happen to be racist), when it comes to non-whites. The experiences of people of a specific race, be it black people or white people, are not collective. Being born black does not guarantee that a person will be at a disadvantage, nor does being born white guarantee that the person will be privileged. This is coming from me, who happens to be a non-white. All this talk about privilege is a load of crap.

At this point, it was even. They were all given the same script and budget and asked to shoot a scene. He's not "whitesplaining" he just didn't want to change the competition at this late stage of the contest. She was pushing for a minority director, whether they were the best choice or not. That wasn't fair to everyone that worked hard or harder on their contest submissions. Matt just wanted to choose the best director, and then diversify the cast.

Just gonna add my perspective. Like Doctor Phil's method for assisting people overcome mental/psychological issues where he makes them confront their own ugliness, then to assist them to rectify "personal problems", a prostitute and black lady may be stereotypical and inane, but if you can make people understand the dynamic of our culture & how it actually perpetuates this phenomena it in a deliberate & open, respectful way, that we see for ourselves the problem so that it can be confronted and rectified. I don't see any real benefit we as a humanity would gain if this sort of degradation and other BS results of this horrific monster of a problem in in our culture regarding commercialized sexual intimacy continued when it only takes so little, but so necessary, examination and diligence regarding seeing people as people, and as a people ready to work together for the de-commercialization of something that should belong (real loving sexual relationships) to a non-commercial social dynamic. If we can dream it up in the form of a show, maybe it's not really that hard to address the societal degradation the entire society suffers from as a result of this dynamic, & that such endeavor has more weight and merit to it than "Yet Another Formulaic Exploitation For Which to Become Passive Towards & Angry About."
Please forgive me if this confuses you. I'd happily listen to constructive criticism were you to share, because I have a hard time putting things into simple terms sometimes, as well as much difficulty to communicate effectively.

When I first heard about all this I thought damon must have been a real SOB, but I actually don't see the problem with his explanation now that I see the video, he just wants the most talented person to get the job which seems pretty fair. As Irish guy if I was in that position (choosing who gets to direct) I would know not to let the fact that one of the compeitors was also Irish not cloud my judgement, even though being honest I would want them to be the best.

I see Effies point, but if it's a competition, it seems kind of wrong to base anything off of race. Why can't people just agree to disagree, and not see either side as "racist". Effie handled Damon's response with respect, so should you. We should encourage these discussions between two intelligent people on race, not loath the side we disagree with.

The way it was said, was that if a jerk. Effie was just trying to point out that the director she saw best may not have the most experience, but the director had the most personal relatability and connection to the storyline and can bring more to the table because of familiarity. Kind of like a Latin guy making a film about an asian family, he may be a famed director, but what does a Latin man know about growing up in am Asian family, figuratively speaking.
