2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Is More Than Just Efficient (And Easier On The Eyes Than Prius)

  • Toyota is doubling down on hybrid powertrains. It means the already thrifty Corolla now scores 52 MPG as a hybrid. That’s 19 MPG better. It’s also much more normal looking than Prius. Which one is right for you? Keep in mind, one is a hatchback, the other is a sedan. Both are built on the TNGA architecture. Tom Voelk checks out a fully loaded Corolla Hybrid though that’s not saying much since it’s only sold in the lower LE trim. It’s one gripe on a well done sedan. Oh, and a little bit of Henry.

      Climate change is the biggest scam in American science, but it's wormed its way into cultural orthodoxy so we're stuck with it. I'll take your apology in twenty years when the temperature hasn't budged, the ice caps are still there, and Al Gore's seaside mansion is still above water. Computer models from paid government scientists ain't science.

      bg1379, if CO2 is a culprit for climate change? What are we to do with the oceans' evaporation process which is CO2? That's a lot of water. Like Bunker Andy said, Climate Change is a scam because most Americans have not taken biology and/or chemistry classes to understand that they are being hood-winked with fake science. POS Obummer bought a sea side house in the Hamptons, so apparently he's not worried about the ocean swallowing his house??

    Tom, 'Payback' time may vary but an 18 mpg (50%) bump is a really big deal in a commuter car. With a typical Toyota lifespan of 15-20 years, the fuel savings amounts to the volume of several swimming pools of gasoline NEVER being burned. Please note Android Auto is standard on the 2021 models. Lastly, did anyone else spot the aquamarine house at 1:14 ?

    I get around 55-57 mpg. I drive 160 miles a day. About 98% highway. 62mph is the sweet spot on Cruise control. The engine turns off and uses the hybrid mode when it’s level ground or down hill. When not using cruise control you can use the electric motor alone with the engine off, up to 70 mph BUT you have to be progressive with the gas pedal. I bought mine in July 2021, I already have 15,000 miles! No regrets. I get about 550 miles per tank. Only has a 10 gallon gas tank.

    In the UK the Corolla comes as a hatch, an estate(shootingbrake) in all trim levels and even a GR Sport trim. We also get a far more powerful 2.0ltr engine option too, as with the CHR. It seems ridiculous to me that Toyota has so little confidence in their products? I really don’t see the Prius lasting much longer here. Even the Yaris we get is completely different, from the ground up. That car is going to be available as a track focussed GR version with nearly 300bhp.

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 4 роки тому +1

      In the UK you have the good sense to build your own supply of Corolla hatches and wagons. Some of us are still hoping the far more practical estate comes to our continent. Toyota just announced the re-badged Mazda 2 (sold as a Yaris in recent years) will end with the 2020 model. I expect the new Yaris Cross will come to North America sooner rather than later to cater to the CUV craze. Toyota is adding Hybrid options to almost every model in their lineup so I am not sure if they really worry how many Prius they sell. The cheque for a Corolla, Camry or RAV4 Hybrid gets deposited in the same big, fat bank account.

    The 52 mpg rating equates to over 4.5 l/100km in the Aussie vernacular. But measured by Aussie standards the rating is about 3.6 l/100km, so clearly the USA standards are tougher and in fact more realistic. I am NO newcomer to milking a Toyota hybird for what its worth. At the moment, my new 2020 Hybrid Corolla sedan is achieving 3.9 l / 100km and I have had to work hard to achieve that. I am constantly monitoring whether I am coasting in EV mode (i.e. slightly recharging, applying brakes for an extended amount of time (i.e. heavier recharge effectiveness), deliberately accelerating from a standing start in a very careful manner, etc, etc. My point here is that by USA standards I can easily surpass the 52mpg without needing to work at it. By Australian standards, I'll never quite get there.

    • @jeffreyfurtado3681
      @jeffreyfurtado3681 4 роки тому

      Glad, you noticed this issue. Many recent sedans are using smaller gas tanks and claiming better MPG which is b.s.
      Camry as an example went from an 18.5 gallon tank to 17, now 16.

    • @MylesV
      @MylesV 2 роки тому

      @@jeffreyfurtado3681 What makes this BS? The conventional Corolla has a 13.2 gallon gas tank and is rated for 396 miles of range on a full tank, the hybrid Corolla has an 11.4 gallon tank and is rated for 604 miles of range. Despite the slightly smaller tank it still has significantly more driving range.

    i love my 2020 Corolla hybrid. I just passed 10K trouble free miles i will be putting a video up on my channel. IMO the EPA ratings are off on this car....way low. If i drive the car in conditions that do not favor a hybrid(cold, highway use) i still get 57.1 hand calculated.and the dash says 61 mpg. Driven gently to work and back im averaging 60-63 mpg han calculated and the dash says 64-68 mpg. Car is amazing on fuel i go 550 miles on 9 gallons of fuel all the time an i drive at least 5 over the speed limit and more on the highway...amazing car for the money, Toyota reliability is why i bought it. BTW i have a friend with same car non hybrid and i literally get 2x his mpg he gets 30-32 average ,my hybrid payoff will be way less than 8 years.

    In my country we are prepared to pay a premium for steel alloy wheel rims. Sadly, the hybrid has these "aero caps" placed over the rims. So the alloy rims instead look like cheap plastic hub capped rims. Yeah I understand that Toyota just placed the Prius wheels on the Corolla, in the name of fuel efficiency - which is demonstrably accurate - but in reality it just makes the more expensive hybrid variant look cheaper! An example of Toyota (engineering cost saving) homogenisation which failed.

      Well, we'll agree to disagree. Corolla isn't a style leader but it has well proportioned and purposeful lines for the most part. Prius has a number of lines that venture off into nowhere and a C pillar that's a jumble of seams and materials. And wheels that are small enough to swap out with a Radio Flyer wagon.

    ridiculous they don't offer this as a hatchback in the US, but they do elsewhere. if they did, maybe the hideous prius would finally get killed off. I had a rental 2019 corolla hatchback hybrid in New Zealand , liked it so much I wanted to buy one. hatchback practicality can't be beat for a car that's already small, no way I would buy the sedan as shown unfortunately.
