lmao its so funny when she's like "imagine yourself lying in bed at night scrolling thru ur phone ready to go to sleep and thinking wow... I would love to buy a box of oranges"
When I am paying for an audio book, I do not expect any advertising, that's why I am paying. They tried free books with print advertising in the past which failed.
She really is working her soul for a paycheck. I plan to work hard and smart to be wealthy. But I promise everyone in the UA-cam community, in this comments, and the next Gen that I will use My money power to fight against a future like this.
Interesting video overall, but just mentioning the Tech Crunch article "The Majority of U.S. consumers still download zero apps a month" and using that to justify super apps being the future, was INCREDIBLY misleading! I read the article, and found that the "Majority" was just 51% and consisted of predominantly people 35+. The other 49% were downloading quite a few more apps!! I don't see any signs of super apps becoming as big in western countries as soon as she is predicting. Both the Apple and Android developer communities are still seeing large revenue growth even these last couple years.
There are millions of new apps every year.... It would be nice to see how those downloads are distributed and what is the "retention". Superapps tend to have a huge retention and take advantage of the powerful distribution of the app to create new business and bring new revenue streams.
11:05 "....And the glorious magical moment when you realize that you found time" It's really gut wrenching to see how excited she is to announce that our "newly found time" of undistracted listening will be filled up with ads. I know Podcasts today already have ads, but the idea that corporates are now hunting after these short periods of our peace of mind is really scary.
“We're gonna see more tech and software permeate our physical worlds." Absolutely agree! These new integrations will be underpinned by the emergence of new mega development platforms like a unified automobile OS (e.g. Android Auto).
Welp, that was not as bad as the comment section made it seem to be. I actually share her enthusiasm about "data-assets", but the idea that the west has anything to learn from Chinese "super-apps" is absolutely grotesque and I feel slightly insulted.
C2 the difference is that browser vendors usually tend to not control or dictate which sites do you open in their tabs. Super apps are closed ecosystems, this is kind of back to WAP portals.
@@thenashbridges my point exactly. one can make their own closed ecosystem portal with bookmarks and maintain ability to add an infinite number of others. i see superapp concept as just a consolidation play for incumbents
OMG which is the app she was talking about, with podcasts, I need to blacklist it. This is really really sneaky. I hope people realise what's going on... Imagine someone who lost his sleep due to a spending habit and getting in to debts(which happens a lot) trying to improve sleep by listening to a sincere-looking podcast about sleeping better - there's nothing worse that can happen to him.
So in China does opting out of this technology negatively impact your social credit rating? If you don’t want to do or think what emperor Xi wants to do or think, can this help the police apprehend you or weld you in your home if they think you shouldn’t be spreading a new virus? Living in Hong Kong and traveling often to China (until lately) I can see some super app downsides. Can it assist an authoritarian regime and suppress or help eliminate anyone the party finds undesirable or capable of introducing an open minded opinion? My guess: Absolutely without a doubt. So in China: Sold!
Nice. Her predictions are on point. She only misses ONE very important one. Second hand markets in the apps in major cities. One can buy virtually anything on such second hand markets, if the city is large enough. It's like taking pictures and chat with a price tag and appointment for the sale or purchase. Some apps even use bike delivery, if the customer pays per credit card in advance. It's like online shopping, but more social and much more sustainable.
This is the perfect example of the current state of tech...instead of focusing on solving the problems we face today we settle for selling another fucking widget. We focus on trying to figure out how else can we exploit consumer behavior to sell them more crap nobody needs.
SUPER APP should be built on the open-source and blockchain tech with a high focus on privacy and the ability to be decentralized. Otherwise, we will end up with a monopoly - BIG BROTHER.
That is better than business model for companies rather than free app + immense surveillance and ads. I actually think it make it easier for me if I was watching a video of an orange and I felt I wanted to buy exactly that, to just click a button to buy. That's not monitoring, its monitoring when I see the option to buy an orange in a different app.
As a techie I get it but she's just highlighting the conviences of of making ppl buy more stuff. Also, totally leaving out the part out the ability to practice privacy. But that not sexy to the marketing folks.

Interesting that advertising is referred to as something people want to see. And I wonder what other cultural or economic factors play in to the superapp popularity in Asia that might be missing in North America for ex.
We have to make something for ourselves. I'm chewing on this idea currently. Big tech isn't interested in people beyond the products we can buy. We have to imagine the interaction we want and make it happen. I'm currently looking fort programmers and want to share ideas and collaborate with others. I'm tired of being treated like a consumer 24/7.
I love that idea about hiding ads inside movies. Imagine free movies funded by ads. You could watch the latest blockbuster movie for free. It could be paid for by hiding personalized/targeted ads hidden throughout the movie. I would much prefer ads than having to pay for the movie. I know people are going to complain about the ads. But if you don't want ads, you can just buy the paid version with no ads. There can be 2 versions - regular paid version with no ads, or free version with ads.

The after-school education sector that you find in much of the developing world is getting ripe for disruption as 5G-AR/VR-machine learning technologies converge. Researching this as I did for the American Cultural Association in Morocco, I can say it has tremendous potential for poor youth and adults to improve their lives. However, one significant downside is that consumerist subconscious messages will feed off the data from the students.
While this is exciting, "It's already happening" cannot be really used as a reason for adopting something. The key question increasingly is how much control the individual has over the choices he or she makes or how much the individual can reject. Running roughshod over privacy and individuality concerns should bring all this excitement to an early end. What would it take to be left alone in this world of her imagination?
Uber is pivoting because their model isn't sustainable or even profitable after a decade. I agree with others stating that the enthusiasm here need to be grounded a bit.

113 views, glad to be the first to comment. the reason I could agree with her is because of Wechat.... it's kind of a bore that us humans are getting bored of apps. I remember the days when I was on the store just browsing through... but great insight generally speaking.

I like the idea of apps combining like the hotel and food delivery app. The future of podcasts does seem like it's only going to get better.
