My husband and I took our 2 children on a trip to Italy. We spent 3 days in JFK Airport (another story). Finally got to Rome via Paris and not one of us had our luggage. We had already been in our clothes for 3 days and because we landed at midnight there was no opportunity to shop. I had not packed extra clothes in our carry-on - a mistake I never made again. But...it was the most fabulous trip ever!
Took British airways a few years ago and my luggage was delayed however, they gave me “allowances” and some toiletries so I could get myself some necessities for a day. Luggage came the next day and they actually gave me 100 USD. Woot!
I would add medications, of course, but also someone visually challenged like me needs to have spare contacts, solution, contact cases and eyeglasses with them in their carry on. I have had a bag lost one time on a domestic flight. Luckily it was on my return trip home, and the bag was located a few days later and delivered directly to my front door intact. Thank you Delta!

My mom went on vacation to Hawaii and when she got there they had lost her bag. The whole airport was a joke because they didn't really care. 4 months after she got home they mailed her bag to her. Some jerks ;-;

Keith Foester - I know some people who came to visit us, and they were told at Security that they're not allowed to take all of the medications with them on board. They went and checked their medications [very important diabetes medications (liquid insulin)], but the medications never arrived at the destination.
I made the mistake of not putting extra clothing into my carry on. I was traveling to Delaware and had two connecting flights. On the last flight; my luggage wasn’t there! I had to borrow pajamas that were too small! Luckily my luggage was delivered the very next morning!
IF you plan on storing some important things like a little camera or idk. Just hide it well in your checked in bag. I did. I put it in a sock and I kept putting more socks on it. So they thought it was just a ball of socks lol
Worst lost baggage story for me was; was traveling to Israel by way of Newark, NJ, but they were iced in. So airline rerouted me on another airline by way of Los Angeles. I saw them bring my bag to the plane in my home city, then decide not to load it. When I got to LA, I told them that they didn't load my bag and was told not to worry, it would make the plane to Tel Aviv. It didn't. So I reported my bag missing at Ben Gurion, and was told, don't worry it will come tomorrow, go on to Jerusalem, and we will bring it to you. That night it began to snow. I woke to find there was half a meter of snow outside. Nothing was moving, the roads were closed, the train wasn't running, nor was Eged. The airport had my bag, but no way to get it to me. Fortunately, I pack in a way much like you recommend, because I did not get my bag until 9 days later.
This is one of the best packing videos that I have watched. Many of the of the other videos talked about carry on essentials but didn't mention a change of clothes, undies, and a bra. I've seen a few videos where jewelry was placed in a checked bag. I'm a bit older than you, so I have had my checked bag lost a few times. The worst was many years ago in Casablanca. It took British Airways three days to find my bag. That's after I went to the airport and insisted that they call to find out where my bag was. I refused to leave until they made a call. My bag was there the next day. You had said to not place important documents in your checked luggage. That's a very important point. I did get a great tip from another video which suggested placing a copy of your flight itinerary along with a copy of your hotel reservation. That way if your suitcase is lost, the airline will know where you are. I also place contact info in the suitcase. When traveling out of the country, I turn off my phone so I asked to initially be contacted by email.

While traveling by air a few years ago , I dropped a glass of juice in my lap and I was soaked through. I had an extra pair of clothes in my hand baggage which saved the day.
good tips...when we pack a checked luggage, we always pack a carry on with things as if it is only box we use for our travel -- a set of clothing,cardigan/sweater, inner wear,even liners and napkins( you never know)...along with that a copy of our travel plan print out goes inside of all our boxes with emergency contact info as well.. and a copy of our travel documents/ID copy, etc goes into the carry on..we do not put that in checked baggage... also, have some cash on you to spend at your destination so you do not have to worry about credit card decline or ATM machines as soon as you reach... little planning ahead goes a long way:) enjoy travel!
Great tip about extra clothing. I already do the others, but you forgot medications. I make sure I have apps for my hotel, airline and train providers on my cell, but also have a folder with copies of my documents & tickets.
I also bring a small planner with important phone numbers, dates & times, transportation info ( flights, trains etc..) confirmation numbers etc.. I also write them into the notes on my phone with photos. Also, tag any emails/texts regarding your travel info as important or separate (folder) easier to find them quickly In addition to these things I put my liquids, a few essentials I could change into & electronics in my personal item. Which doesn’t ( or shouldn’t) leave my possession.
I once dismantled a 4,000 dollar computer and packed it in a checked bag using clothing to cushion the parts. I'm still amazed that it worked flawlessly upon reassembly. (Bought a new case at the destination).
I only ever travel using a carry-on, which lately has been a backpack. I only ever travel with checked luggage whenever I move which is every couple years and so far it's been wonderful 😊
Quick bypass put bubble wrap then electonics then put clothes over electronics that way if they mistreat your item its safe by bubble wrap and if anyone opened it when they open your bag they will just think its just clothes

nowadays there are recent cases of lithium batteries explosions that is why ICAO had ban cargo shipments in aircraft. DO NOT PUT SPARE BATTERIES (INCLUDING BATTERY PACKS AND POWERBANKS) INTO THE CHECKED IN LUGGAGE.
This happened back in late December. My family and I were flying to Jamaica for New Years and before we went through security my mom and my little brother went to the bathroom but brother didn't realize after security he forgot his carry on in the bathroom so my mom had to go the back to bathroom to go get his backpack but it was gone. The employees said it was taken by police because it was a federal offense (possibly be a bomb or something) so my mom was taken into an interrogation room or something to clarify what was in the bag. She said they took it very seriously even though it was a 7 year olds backpack. And I'm just sitting on a bench past security, waiting for my mom to get back with my brother, waiting for my mom to get back, confused what was going on and afraid we were going to miss our flight.
GemmaLemma Well, at least you know that the airport employees and police officers take your safety very seriously. Unfortunately, terrorists are not afraid to hide behind the innocence of a 7 year-old. The world is rather messed up in many ways.
Also my tips, don't bring scissors in your carry on luggage. I got into trouble looking through my bag to give it to them. Powerbank is not allowed in checked baggage too so put that in your carry on. Another tips, hard-shell luggage is harder to fit in the cabin compare to fabric type luggage. Sling tote bag is so great for traveling. Bag without zippers save time especially taking things in and out like travel documents and purse.
I told the wife to NOT put the car keys in the checked bags. She did not listen and they lost the bag. We had to leave our car at the airport, and hire a shuttle to drive us 94 miles to our house to get our extra key then drive back with another car to get our car stranded at the airport.
yes me and my dad have two suitcases left in an airport in North Carolina. thank goodness that we have made it home already so wasn't a problem there we did they did locate them for us and they were shipped to us by God that drop them off at our house 2 Days Later
we've only had one issue at an airport. my mom had to fight tooth and nail for them to allow us to bring my nebulizer ( breathing machine) onto the planar even though we had all the correct paperwork. so word to the wise if you have a machine or whatnot. that you seriously need on your trip make sure to triple check you are clear. because they will fight you. about it
All this is great advice. I just want to add one more thing because this is what I do. Make sure you put any medication you are taking into your carry on bag. x
I when I was moving to Mexico to be with my hubby, I packed my giant $500 drawing tablet in one of my suitcases. I packed the whole thing back in the box it arrived in and even surrounded it with clothes for cushioning. I also put some tape over my suitcase and wrote 'FRAGILE' in big letters in hopes of some decency while handling my bag. All of this proved to be a fruitless endeavor because the box was crushed on one side. I completely panicked, as the drawing tablet was only a few weeks old, but it turned out just fine, thank goodness. It just goes to show that the people handling your bag don't give a single fuck about your stuff..
I've had British Airways lose my 2 check in bags from los angeles to London via Dallas/FW. It's actually the second time I've encountered the issue where British Airways have lost bags due to the incompetence of managing connecting flights 1st time was a holiday with parents where one item a waterskiing bag was lost and the airport sent it to them in 2 days time. At London in my situation BA managed to send them next day but it was at home for me so I had the odd few spare at home. I say don't rely on BA especially for connecting flights because they don't take blame for it and they're super pompous about their screw ups
Although not an ordinary checked baggage item, I have twice had a Bike(in a bike box) delayed. It hasn't been at the airport, once to US and once back to the UK. They appeared the next day. Both times probably because of a connecting flight that was a close run thing. Although in my case they were Bikes, it could have been anything I guess. So my advice is, on a connecting flight, to leave a fair bit of time between arrival and Departure of the next flight.
Airline lost my golf bag. Was supposed to play in a tournament the next day. Airline coverage was a joke. Don’t ever think the reimbursement will cover anything over $100 dollars. It might have gone up a little since then, but I’m sure not enough to cover what’s in your bag
You also need to put all of your medicine in your carry on too. Alone with travel size deorderant, body spray, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, brush, & comb, razor, & shaving creme, your makeup, your pms supplies, wipes, etc. What are you gonna do when they ask you to put your carry on down in the bottom of the plane? I also carry a big pocket book or a back pack that I can put stuff in if that does happen.
Once I had 2 checked bags and both were lost. 1 month later, 1 came back and the other never did! The Airline that lost it was based in the middle east and didn't have a lot of set up for customer service; calls were never answered or returned, I filed a reimbursement request and never even heard back! Haha that was 2 years ago and I still never heard about that suitcase. Maybe one day...

Used electronics like laptop should not be in check in luggage coz your luggage would be open before it enter the airplane for security reasons... I experienced it in NYC when I forgot to get my laptop inside my luggage coz I was on a hurry to check in. (I'm so sorry because I forgot) Customs officers or People from JFK didn't lock back my luggage wherein my laptop and all my things inside my luggage were all safe & complete (nothing was missing) except that luggage was open as in literally open for 24 hours flight and with connecting flight (2 different airplane). But they left a note or airport security note inside my luggage notifying me why they open my locked luggage.

I had my camera, laptop and phone stolen while in my carry on under my feet in the air. I fell asleep for 30minutes and only realised when I got out of the airport. It was truly the worst day of my life.
A few months ago in February, my friend's girlfriend went on a plane to head home after spending a few days with him on Valentines day. She put all of her gifts from her boyfriend into her checked bag. When she got home, her checked bag is missing and the airport had to go find it. A few days later, she finally got her bag back and the gifts arrived in one piece.
The only things that goes in my suitcase is my clothes, shoes, and toiletries.Never put your medications in your checked baggage. Basic general rule anything that you value, or that is valuable don't put it in your checked baggage.
Bomb threat at Schoenefeld... as I checked my bag, flew to Cairo, flight delay... missed my connecting flight to Entebbe. Idiot in Cairo made some sort of mistake. Bag did not arrive. Number 4 kind of applied to me, when I flew from California to Hawaii. I usually pack in carry on but my mom made me put all of my clothes into a checked bag, it was not stolen but my mom and sister spilled drinks on me a lot, I had to wait to get to the hotel to change but by then I went to sleep which was around 5 hours
One time, flying on US Airways, because of storms my flight got cancelled. There were no more open flights to my wanted destination that day. So I had to book a flight to another airport. Had to repay for new tickets and everything. Then, when I got to the other airport, i found out my bag still went on the next flight to my desired airport. Like, how does that happen tho? But anyway, Next day (after a night with no basic essentials like a toothbrush or anything), flew Delta to my desired airport. Had to go across the airport to the US Airways office to get my bag. And I was VERY angry when i saw my bag. It was ripped, and shampoo or something had spilled all over it.
I let my mom borrow my only travel luggage so that she can go to Philippines for vacations (on my dime) so she takes my luggage with her for her 2weeks vacation. During those 2 weeks, my friends decided to have a destination wedding to Cuba within a week when my mom suppose to come back from her trip. So I booked my trip (with my friends of course) which so happens to be 1 week after my mom should be back with my luggage bag. My mom did come back without my luggage and I asked her where is it? She said that airport damaged the whole thing and disposed it (the contents in the luggage will be shipped to her free of charge) and my mom doesn't think she'll replace it nor she will call the airline that broke my luggage bag to remedy the situation. FML.
I didn't actually lose my luggage but the airline for some reason sent it to a different country. But the airline was able to retrieve it and sent it to my house two days later. Could you imagine the inconvenience if it happened while I was vacationing in a foreign country and they lost my luggage?!!

good tips...when we pack a checked luggage, we always pack a carry on with things as if it is only box we use for our travel -- a set of clothing,cardigan/sweater, inner wear,even liners and napkins( you never know)...along with that a copy of our travel plan print out goes inside of all our boxes with emergency contact info as well.. and a copy of our travel documents/ID copy, etc goes into the carry on..we do not put that in checked baggage...
also, have some cash on you to spend at your destination so you do not have to worry about credit card decline or ATM machines as soon as you reach...
little planning ahead goes a long way:) enjoy travel!
Great tip about extra clothing. I already do the others, but you forgot medications. I make sure I have apps for my hotel, airline and train providers on my cell, but also have a folder with copies of my documents & tickets.
I also bring a small planner with important phone numbers, dates & times, transportation info ( flights, trains etc..) confirmation numbers etc.. I also write them into the notes on my phone with photos.
Also, tag any emails/texts regarding your travel info as important or separate (folder) easier to find them quickly
In addition to these things I put my liquids, a few essentials I could change into & electronics in my personal item. Which doesn’t ( or shouldn’t) leave my possession.
I once dismantled a 4,000 dollar computer and packed it in a checked bag using clothing to cushion the parts. I'm still amazed that it worked flawlessly upon reassembly. (Bought a new case at the destination).

I only ever travel using a carry-on, which lately has been a backpack. I only ever travel with checked luggage whenever I move which is every couple years and so far it's been wonderful 😊

Not only baggage handlers steal stuff, security agents steal stuff too so watch all your carry on stuff too.
Quick bypass put bubble wrap then electonics then put clothes over electronics that way if they mistreat your item its safe by bubble wrap and if anyone opened it when they open your bag they will just think its just clothes

We were on a non-stop flight, Anchorage to Seattle. My daughters bag went to Texas! She asked for the mileage her bag got.
I had a bag that went east when I didn't. It took 4 days to get it back!
My luggage has seen more places than I have.
This happened back in late December. My family and I were flying to Jamaica for New Years and before we went through security my mom and my little brother went to the bathroom but brother didn't realize after security he forgot his carry on in the bathroom so my mom had to go the back to bathroom to go get his backpack but it was gone. The employees said it was taken by police because it was a federal offense (possibly be a bomb or something) so my mom was taken into an interrogation room or something to clarify what was in the bag. She said they took it very seriously even though it was a 7 year olds backpack. And I'm just sitting on a bench past security, waiting for my mom to get back with my brother, waiting for my mom to get back, confused what was going on and afraid we were going to miss our flight.

Well, at least you know that the airport employees and police officers take your safety very seriously. Unfortunately, terrorists are not afraid to hide behind the innocence of a 7 year-old. The world is rather messed up in many ways.
Also my tips, don't bring scissors in your carry on luggage. I got into trouble looking through my bag to give it to them. Powerbank is not allowed in checked baggage too so put that in your carry on. Another tips, hard-shell luggage is harder to fit in the cabin compare to fabric type luggage. Sling tote bag is so great for traveling. Bag without zippers save time especially taking things in and out like travel documents and purse.
I told the wife to NOT put the car keys in the checked bags. She did not listen and they lost the bag. We had to leave our car at the airport, and hire a shuttle to drive us 94 miles to our house to get our extra key then drive back with another car to get our car stranded at the airport.
yes me and my dad have two suitcases left in an airport in North Carolina. thank goodness that we have made it home already so wasn't a problem there we did they did locate them for us and they were shipped to us by God that drop them off at our house 2 Days Later

we've only had one issue at an airport. my mom had to fight tooth and nail for them to allow us to bring my nebulizer ( breathing machine) onto the planar even though we had all the correct paperwork.
so word to the wise if you have a machine or whatnot. that you seriously need on your trip make sure to triple check you are clear. because they will fight you. about it

I when I was moving to Mexico to be with my hubby, I packed my giant $500 drawing tablet in one of my suitcases. I packed the whole thing back in the box it arrived in and even surrounded it with clothes for cushioning. I also put some tape over my suitcase and wrote 'FRAGILE' in big letters in hopes of some decency while handling my bag.
All of this proved to be a fruitless endeavor because the box was crushed on one side. I completely panicked, as the drawing tablet was only a few weeks old, but it turned out just fine, thank goodness.
It just goes to show that the people handling your bag don't give a single fuck about your stuff..
I've had British Airways lose my 2 check in bags from los angeles to London via Dallas/FW. It's actually the second time I've encountered the issue where British Airways have lost bags due to the incompetence of managing connecting flights 1st time was a holiday with parents where one item a waterskiing bag was lost and the airport sent it to them in 2 days time. At London in my situation BA managed to send them next day but it was at home for me so I had the odd few spare at home. I say don't rely on BA especially for connecting flights because they don't take blame for it and they're super pompous about their screw ups

Although not an ordinary checked baggage item, I have twice had a Bike(in a bike box) delayed. It hasn't been at the airport, once to US and once back to the UK. They appeared the next day. Both times probably because of a connecting flight that was a close run thing. Although in my case they were Bikes, it could have been anything I guess. So my advice is, on a connecting flight, to leave a fair bit of time between arrival and Departure of the next flight.
Airline lost my golf bag. Was supposed to play in a tournament the next day. Airline coverage was a joke. Don’t ever think the reimbursement will cover anything over $100 dollars. It might have gone up a little since then, but I’m sure not enough to cover what’s in your bag
You also need to put all of your medicine in your carry on too. Alone with travel size deorderant, body spray, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, brush, & comb, razor, & shaving creme, your makeup, your pms supplies, wipes, etc.
What are you gonna do when they ask you to put your carry on down in the bottom of the plane? I also carry a big pocket book or a back pack that I can put stuff in if that does happen.

Once I had 2 checked bags and both were lost. 1 month later, 1 came back and the other never did! The Airline that lost it was based in the middle east and didn't have a lot of set up for customer service; calls were never answered or returned, I filed a reimbursement request and never even heard back! Haha that was 2 years ago and I still never heard about that suitcase. Maybe one day...

Hi. Another important thing to note is to bring any medications including over the counter medicines in your carry on.
Used electronics like laptop should not be in check in luggage coz your luggage would be open before it enter the airplane for security reasons...
I experienced it in NYC when I forgot to get my laptop inside my luggage coz I was on a hurry to check in. (I'm so sorry because I forgot)
Customs officers or People from JFK didn't lock back my luggage wherein my laptop and all my things inside my luggage were all safe & complete (nothing was missing) except that luggage was open as in literally open for 24 hours flight and with connecting flight (2 different airplane). But they left a note or airport security note inside my luggage notifying me why they open my locked luggage.

A few months ago in February, my friend's girlfriend went on a plane to head home after spending a few days with him on Valentines day. She put all of her gifts from her boyfriend into her checked bag. When she got home, her checked bag is missing and the airport had to go find it. A few days later, she finally got her bag back and the gifts arrived in one piece.

Bomb threat at Schoenefeld... as I checked my bag, flew to Cairo, flight delay... missed my connecting flight to Entebbe. Idiot in Cairo made some sort of mistake. Bag did not arrive. The screw up was intense,,, they brought wrong bag to my hotel insisting it was mine (I have an old Sea Bag Duffle from the Army and they said a blue roly was mine. Took four days to find it because it had gone to Angola.

One time, flying on US Airways, because of storms my flight got cancelled. There were no more open flights to my wanted destination that day. So I had to book a flight to another airport. Had to repay for new tickets and everything. Then, when I got to the other airport, i found out my bag still went on the next flight to my desired airport. Like, how does that happen tho? But anyway, Next day (after a night with no basic essentials like a toothbrush or anything), flew Delta to my desired airport. Had to go across the airport to the US Airways office to get my bag. And I was VERY angry when i saw my bag. It was ripped, and shampoo or something had spilled all over it.
I let my mom borrow my only travel luggage so that she can go to Philippines for vacations (on my dime) so she takes my luggage with her for her 2weeks vacation. During those 2 weeks, my friends decided to have a destination wedding to Cuba within a week when my mom suppose to come back from her trip. So I booked my trip (with my friends of course) which so happens to be 1 week after my mom should be back with my luggage bag. My mom did come back without my luggage and I asked her where is it? She said that airport damaged the whole thing and disposed it (the contents in the luggage will be shipped to her free of charge) and my mom doesn't think she'll replace it nor she will call the airline that broke my luggage bag to remedy the situation. FML.

I didn't actually lose my luggage but the airline for some reason sent it to a different country. But the airline was able to retrieve it and sent it to my house two days later. Could you imagine the inconvenience if it happened while I was vacationing in a foreign country and they lost my luggage?!!
