- The other week, I made a huge mistake. And I hope you all can forgive me. Most of you were super nice about it, but I need to set the record straight.
In my video about my husband's bass guitars, I called his @ernieballinc Music Man Sterling a Sterling by Music Man Stingray. They are NOT the same instrument. So this one is getting a redo. Featuring the @EarthQuakerDevices Blumes.

YESSS! My first introduction to the MM Sterling was when Tim Foreman of Switchfoot first started playing his back in the day. Always love how they sound!
The SBMM Stingray is a solid budget guitar, I can only imagine how nice this made in USA is.
VERY
Confirmed! The SBMMs are a fantastic value for the money! USA Music Man basses (and guitars) are next, next level in terms of fit/finish/materials/craftsmanship/electronics/quality.
That said, I've got a SBMM Ray35HH and I LOVE it!
I've also modded it (because I'm a lost cause 🫠) - the neck pickup was a bit too wooly sounding for me (I 99% was playing just the standard "bridge" pickup) so I routed and moved the neck pickup back, right next to the bridge pickup (now in a more P-Bass pickup location).
I also have been absolutely enamored with EBMM & SBMM passive basses (the discontinued Cutlass bass and Caprice bass [the first bass to make me truly appreciate passive P/J basses!], along with SBMM [and now EBMM] short scale Sting Ray), so I've committed absolute Sting Ray heresy and am converting it to passive, with Vol/Vol/Tone/Tone and 2x 3-way mini-switches for Series/Single/Parallel for each pickup!
If you totally gut it and upgrade all the parts and the neck size fits your hands better than a USA version, it can surpass it.
Love the video! The stingray pickup is one of my favorite bass pickups. I put one in an “Eagle” p-bass I got from my father-in-law and installed a series/parallel switch kind of like the one in your husband’s bass. Music Man hit it out of the park with this incredibly versatile design and I just had to copy it!
One of my two favorite basses I've played with the other being a Mustang bass. Both get such great punchy tones.
Right on! I love my mustang basses
Is the set dressing/lighting new? It's very cozy. I like it.
Kind of! My husband and I swapped offices (his idea) late last year.
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Emily also Thursday is my dad birthday ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Literally the most expensive Sterling I have ever seen listed was a limited edition color for $600, where the heck did you guys buy it where it was $800 AFTER a trade-in discount!?
Are you positive you're not thinking of "Sterling BY Music Man" Stingray? A quick look at reverb shows "Music Man Sterling" listenings show plenty of Music Man Sterling basses in a range similar to what he paid.
Apology accepted? LOL Honestly, when the "Sterling by Musicman" line came out, it became impossible to search online for these basses. I think the naming is an unfortunate casualty of the SBMM line's popularity.
It's confusing for SURE.
imagine how confused ernie ball is ..he even named his son sterling.
I see bASS content, I click like.
i never liked the sound of these kinds of bass pickups that ernie ball use....i blame mark hoppus, his sting ray bass sounded like ass in the late 90s, as did when those other 90s punk-adjacent bands used them going into the early 00s..i get the impression they're voiced for slap styles and stuff, not strummed fast in punk or rock, or whatever styles of music i would hear them in instead.... but i'm sure i could dial one in to my liking if i actually tried... this one looks nice, and i'm sure plays really well, and that pedal is making it sound better than when clean.... end of rant. cheers, internet!
..have u calmed down now?
Yeah, it took me a minute though, lolz.
It's EBMM's fault for making such confusing branding. Not everything has to be called Sterling guys!
