I bought a Dollar Tree makeup brush set for cleaning the lint out of my sewing machine. I keep an eye out for bristles that might come loose, though. Not a hack, but Dollar Tree is where I bought foam board for making my design boards. I keep my thread and it’s bobbin in individual plastic snack bags for each color, but I like the idea of the pony tail holder to keep the thread from unwinding inside the bag.
I also use the make up brushes, and for a design board for quilts I use the dollar tree flannel back oblong tablecloth. Hang it with command hooks on my wall plastic side to the wall, and the flannel side I put my fabric squares.
This is not a Dollar Store hack, but it's a great way to get lots of light in your sewing room. I had my handyman install a neon shop light in the ceiling over my sewing machine. I added a link to the chain so that I can turn the light on and off while I sit at the machine. It even has a built-in Bluetooth speaker! I absolutely love it. He ran the wiring up through the ceiling into our attic so I don't even have to have an ugly wire hanging down. It's the best gift ever.
SEW CLEVER! My Fav is the poster boards ($1!) to make project boards. They cut easily with an old rotary cutter & I use white fleece (or batting) to cover them. PUMICE stone I use for my HANDS because it keeps my palms smooth when hand sewing & handling fabric. Keep Them Coming!!
@@JesusisKing222 That is Really Smart! I inherited a whole bag of brand new white fleecy type fabric with no idea of what to use it for. So I tried it on project boards. Works great--thicker than batting--but holds like batting & was a good way to use it up. But using new or even some old fleece back plastic tablecloths is genius!
Wonderful ideas! I love the light hack, didn't even know those lights were a thing. You really don't have to spend a fortune on sewing helps. Awhile back I saw a lady using the gardening gloves with the rubber dots on them from the dollar store, to help with machine quilting.
I use the paper towel holder to hold my tape rolls for my straight lines when quilting. and use those toe separators all the time for organizing my bobbins for certain colors on designated quilts. Love your channel and your vintage quilts that you find. Thank you for sharing and look forward to your future videos!
Great ideas. I used the retractable lanyard clipped to my extra light by my sewing machine to hold scissors. Pumice stone can be used to remove fuzz balls from flannel and fleece. Also pumice used for fuzz balls formed on knitted items.
That was interesting. The only hack I knew about was the pony tail elastics for putting around your threads. I can see I will have to look around our Dollar Tree shop with new eyes.
I love all your tips from Dollar store. I used to keep my sharp sewing scissors on a lanyard around my neck at work. Until I stood up quick and I got stabbed in the leg because the scissors got stuck on the bottom of the table when I stood up fast. Oops! Was handy though. Never had to question where they were! Keep up the good videos. I always love to see a new one or for that matter and old one
Oh no! That’s scary! I don’t put pins or needles in my mouth because a friend accidentally inhaled one once! So scary! I think I will be thinking twice about that lanyard! Thank you for the head’s up on this.
@SewtheDistance. Me too! @SewtheDistance dollar tree items. Make a very inexpensive travel on the go work station. I found this while out of town & desperately needed something to do! I don't know how I missed this video Kris. Those hacks are very interesting. Next time i'm in our cheap shops i'll look at products with my sewing room in mind.
Thank you so much! I love getting things that can serve second purposes in my sewing room. It is fun to think about things differently, isn't it? Thanks for watching and sharing!
Hi Kris I also bought tape holders from the dollar tree and use them to hold my washi tape. I hot glued the tape dispensers to a clip board ( 4 total) and hang on the wall for easy access. I like to you the washi tape for marking seam allowances, pattern or machine. Love to see more dollar store tips. Thank you again Kris
Wow! What a wonderful idea! Thank you! I love washi tape and love the idea of hot glueing the tape dispensers to a clip board. Thank you a million times over for this one!
Hi Kris Thank you for sharing your tips. I use Self Adherent Bandages for wrapping around my thread spools. I love that I can cut it to size for the different spool sizes I have.
The soft ponytail holders also work well to secure the rolled-up paper pantographs for the longarm. I also use a soft bristle make up brush to clean out the bobbin case area of my domestic machine. Good tips, would like to see more!
First aid tape! My granny always had it in her sewing kit, I never knew why. I'll bet she was using it as a thimble. The pumice stone would work to give your needle a little more life by sharpening it.
Not sure if you can get these at the dollar tree, but small pony tail holders work great for bobbins. I've seen them in sewing/quilt shops for a much higher price and less quanity.
Caution about the dollar store... the items are cheap but not if you will just use them for a minute and then throw them away. I try not to buy single use plastics and items that need batteries (recharge and electrical are preferred to me). Most plastics will take about 500 years to biodegrade, Yes REALLY. Even recycling is hit and miss as to whether that plastic is actually getting reused! Hacks are great! I love hearing about clever tricks to get stuff done. Thank you for listening to my little rant - ♥🌈🌞🌎
I use door stops to tilt my sewing machine toward me to help avoid hunching over my machine to see what I'm working on.
Great idea! Thank you!
I use the fabric squares to practice new blocks and free motion quilting
That's a great idea! Thank you! ❤️

I use the "cutting boards" which is a thin plastic piece for templates. Its easy to see through and trace and sturdy enough to use over and over. TFS
YES! I use these, too! I have a different way I used them that I will show in an upcoming video! Stay tuned. ❤️

I just made a design board by covering foam board with a dollar store tablecloth, back side up. So handy!

Yikes, I'm a natural born klutz. I like the lanyard idea to keep it attached to the sewing machine though.
So glad you love that idea! ❤️ It works well!

The pedicure sponge is useful for rubbing your cutting surface clean of threads and fibers.
Great tip! Thank you!

That is my guess! When I was learning to quilt years ago, I learned that tip. It works so well, too! Great idea about the pumice stone! So smart!
More hacks please!

I purchase a package of 2 disposable cutting boards 4 templates
Love this! I use these, too! I also have another way to use the cutting boards. Stay tuned! I will definitely share in the next video!
Not sure if you can get these at the dollar tree, but small pony tail holders work great for bobbins. I've seen them in sewing/quilt shops for a much higher price and less quanity.

Use the pumice stone on your ruler that has a Knick in it from your rotary blade 😀

Use the pumas stone as a needle sharper
Great idea!
I find spray basting too expensive. So, I thread baste my quilts. I get the cheap thread from the dollar store and it works awesome.
Great tip! I will have to look for thread at our local Dollar Tree. Thank you!
I get my paper tape for machine embroidery at the dollar store.

Use the pumice stone to scrub off hard water lines in your toilet (wear rubber gloves 😂).
