15 Dollar Store Sewing Hacks for $40

- This week's video finds me at the Dollar Store searching for Dollar Tree Sewing Hacks that can be used in a beginner and advanced sewists sewing room. It doesn't take much to find some great sewing hacks to replace expensive sewing notions and sewing tools. This helps to make sewing affordable for beginner and advanced sewists/sewers. If you haven't watched my other sewing hack videos, I have many ideas in my daily sewing practices and in my sewing classroom to share with my viewers.
These youtube tutorials will help all different levels of sewists to hack dollar store items into usable sewing tools.

I started the channel in October 2020 as a way to help my remote learning students with sewing from home. I made sure they all got a machine (their own or a loaner from the school) and a package of materials and supplies. It was a big undertaking but worth it. The students sewed at their own pace and did written curriculum on set days. We are now into the second semester of at-home learning for some students. This semester it is a senior class of grade 11 and grade 12 students.
When I realized that there were UA-cam watchers that wanted to watch my content, I branched out and started making other videos to share some of my knowledge. Please comment on any of the videos to tell me where you are from and/or let me know what kind of content you would like to see.
So now, we are all on a sewing journey: it could be my students, it could be my children, it could be my sewing journey...but it's definitely your sewing journey. I hope you join me every week.

Harbor Freight has quite a few things that can be repurposed for sewing
The plastic cutting boards can be used in the bottom of tote bags, just cut to size. You can sew a slip on cover for it. To make it extra sturdy double up the layers of plastic mat.

As far as news print goes, you can get end rolls for free at the news paper office. They are 4-5 ft wide and , if you are lucky, may have a lot of news print paper left. When I taught preschool we used this to trace the kids, draw on, walk on with painty feet, etc. Thanks for your hacks. I’m off to the dollar store 💖

I bought a magnet dish at Princess Auto for about $3 Canadian. Binder clips can also work as a third hand when you need to keep fabric taut. I also bought a great magnifying lens with a light for about $3 at Princess Auto; great for seeing the size of needles.
I love using the cutting mats but I have to put Washi tape on the edges so I can see where to cut. Something that I do with my larger patterns that I use a lot, is I iron on freezer paper to the back side of the pattern. It makes the pattern more durable and I can use it over and over again without damaging the pattern.

I put magnet strips in a plastic container with a lid (that I got at the dollar store). I have 2 that I use. Also the containers were the snug stacking type with plenty of space inside. In one I have my straight pins, in the other I have my safety pins. Then I stack the containers. My pins are all together, I only need one cover. When I want to get to the other pins, I separate the containers. This has been my pin storage for years. I love it.

Wrapping paper from the Dollar store can be used for patterns and extending patterns. It often has a grid on the backside of the paper.

The rubber finger tips are actually very useful for sewing. They protect your fingers when you're ironing those little details or making bias tape. They're also very good for guiding slippery fabrics while you sew!

I use the large foambacked placemats under my sewng machine and serger. Quiter, and the machines don't travel across the table.

Love your ideas! I was going to mention at Harbor Freight you can magnetic bowls in three different sizes for a a couple of dollars they go on sale. I’ve found nice long rulers and all size clips. A person could make a lot of things work from there.

@@yoursewingteacher1729 I also have a low dollar store where I live and they have these small rotary cutters, (I thought those won’t work,) I was so wrong! my daughter got it for me and it’s better then any high dollar cutter from sewing stores. Yes! Those cutting boards make GREAT templates - there is a more expensive version at the fabric stores, but why?? These are perfect!

$8.99 each..12"x 8" at fabric stores...no way jose...for $1.25. I'll get 3 to make all my templates...$3.75 for 3x as much .yahoo
Sewing hack: Dollar Tree carries rolls of "banner paper" in the same aisle as poster board and school/office supplies. Very useful for large pattern making when doodle newsprint just isn't sturdy or large enough. LOVE your idea for using medical office bed liner as tracing paper! Keep the wonder hack videos coming!

@@yoursewingteacher1729 Absolutely! I'm really enjoying your videos. Great variety of thought provoking subjects and I appreciate your sewing-on-a-dime notion items. I'm hoping to make an oak ironing clapper soon, about a 10" x 10" x 1" with a fun drawer knob to lift it. Quilters like their clappers for flattening seams! Oak wood planks aren't cheap, so I'm going to scan the HD wood remnants bin to see if I can get what I need for a dollar or two. I have an oak clapper I purchased on Amazon, but they are seriously overpriced +$20 small blocks of wood. Perhaps your school's woodshop could make and sell them on eBay or ???? Would be great beginner or extra credit woodshop projects and a way to raise funds for the school. Just a thought.... 😊
@@SewAndTellwithDori thanks for the great idea. I will speak to the shop teacher on Monday. I have a clapper at school that was donated. I don’t use it, but I should get the shop to make me one for home. I love to quilt, but rarely have the time.
@@SewAndTellwithDori I did this, abt 5 years ago. I think it was at a Home Depot . You can buy maple (another hard wood, but it is fine grained) by the foot. I think I bought 1”x4” and they said to ask the guy in the tool rental room to cut it with the miter saw, so that it would be a fine, vs a rough, cut. (He didn’t charge me for the cut!) I can’t remember how long it is, maybe a foot? It only cost a couple bucks. I took it home and sanded it, with very fine sandpaper, especially the cut ends and I rounded off the corners with sandpaper too, so it wouldn’t snag on anything. Sand the flat sides, too, because often the wood will have a film on it (IDK if it’s sap or something from the manufacturing process) and you don’t want that on your fabric. The film never came back, so maybe the latter. Then wiped it off a few times with several damp paper towels to remove all the residue. It worked out great, works well, and saved myself over $30!
Putting a knob on is a novel idea 💡! I didn’t, but then I can use mine double sided.
These days, they are selling smaller ones for quilting. So, while you’re there, consider getting a short piece of a smaller board too. Then you’ll have a big one and a small one! 😁

Those cutting mats make awesome templates. I cut mine out with the Brother ScanNCut. If you find your templates slip, you can stick those little green felt dots on the bottom- the kind you’d put on the bottom of a lamp or something so it won’t scratch your table.

I use those cutting mats as bases in my tote bags. Trim to size, enclose it in a sleeve in matching fabric and it’s removable for washing. Thanks for all your tips
Those "craft clips," have been a favorite housepainting notion of mine-- I can quickly do a short-term protective wrap job of a bush outside or a dish hutch inside. So much easier than tape for some things!

So I've been sewing a lot lately. Learned in school, but taken it up again to keep me busy and deal with stress. I love watching videos like this. I've made so many errors in sewing i could make a video of what not to do. But the biggest tip is to take your time. Whether it's cutting a pattern or pinning (both are probably take the longest for me) but i just need to do it. You know how many times I've cut through multiple pieces of fabric because I didn't move the pieces underneath? Basically what I'm saying is i need to just keep the area neat and follow through. Thank you for making this video.
Hey there Dani! I also have made a million and one mistakes in my day. I have even sewn my sleeve to my project🤣. All we can do is laugh and know that every mistake is an opportunity to learn and do it again. As for cutting- Along with tracing, they are the most time consuming and most hated parts of sewing for me. I often will spend a day tracing patterns, the next day I would cut 6-10 projects and then no cutting again for a looooong while. It allows me to relax and get into a sewing groove. New sub here from Spokane Valley Wa, even though this is 2y old ,it works for me ,except for the fact that the $store is now a $1,25 .I got myself a little sewing machine to make masks,but then the mandate was lifted, I haven't sowen since I made my square dancing dress @16yo ,except for a little hand sewing, for mending or crafts,but I will be starting again,for doggy clothes, pull together toy sacks for my great grandson leggos,a swimsuit cover up for me ,and a few cute masks for Dr appointments, maybe more,we will see 👀 💙
During the ice storm when the power was out for days, I did hand sewing next to the window. I borrowed some spring clamps from my husband to hold a reverse sequin pillow I was making and it was great! thanks for the sticky velcro trick of what not to use!

I had no clue you could throw the "healing" mat in the bathtub to correct it...guess I will be trying that out!
Check out the instructions in the pinned comment. It is actually supposed to be a maintenance thing, as these mats are supposed to be moistened regularly to ensure the self healing properties are still active. Thanks for stopping by. Sorry I missed your comment.

Edited to add directions for cutting mat care: I learned of the proper care of self healing mats a few years ago.
Self healing mats work best when they get regular moisture and stay clean.
You can repair your selfhealing cutting mats in the bathtub! To care for your mat, you need to clean it of all threads and debris. Then find a large container or bathtub where your mat can lay flat, fill with cool water. You want to add ¼ cup white vinegar per gallon of cool water and let it soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
Make sure the water is cool! Warm or hot water can warp your mat. Using a soft brush and some blue Dawn soap, scrub the mat in small circles to remove dirt and lighter stains. If you have damaged the mat with heat, cold water might help, but most likely the damage is not reversible.

I use my silhouette cutter to cut out templates out of the dollar store cutting mats. It takes a bit of playing around to get the cutter to go through but I've made so many templates and stencils from the cute designs on the design store that I've filled up 2 scrapbook binders.

Hi Jennifer. That tip came out of desperation. My bulb burned out in my serger right after servicing and I told myself that I could deal with it until it was time to service again. I (believe it or not) have found many useful items for sewing at harbor freight. Magnetic pin dish, 45mm rotary blades, clips, organizers, etc.

I had to chuckle when you said how much you love MacTac. Way back when, I've known this as Contac Paper. And some of the things I covered were: A toilet seat, a bicycle, a toy box, and a crate to be used as shelving for books. Now I use it in the bottom of my cabinets. But I NEVER thought to use it on a cutting mat. I'll have to try this!
Hello Beth. Wow. I think you love contact paper as much as I do. The best part is that the dollar store carries so many great designs. I have also covered a dresser, lined my drawers, made a feature wall in my bathroom, and covered cabinets in my classroom. As for my cutting mat, I just prefer seeing and working on the pretty side over the green or yellow side. Thanks for watching.
how did the toilet seat hold up?
@@dindog22 It held up quite well! I was living in a rented house and the landlady was impossible to deal with, so I had to improvise. Getting it to shape around the curves was fun. White background with small blue and purple flowers; went really nice with the light blue bathroom. ;-)

It would help to have a close-up view of most of the small items as it is hard to tell what they look like especially when you are unfamiliar with the items. Thanks for the tips.
My favorite sewing hack is the flexible plastic cutting mats. You get 2 and you can use them for so many things! I’ve been using them for a few years and have recycled other hacks to the cutting mats!

I buy my magnetic bowls from a cheap tool chain. I pay anywhere from $2 to $6 depending on the size.
Hello Karen. I think I may have even started a collection of different magnet bowls without realizing it. They are awesome for catching everything. I laugh when they magnetize my scissors!
Harbor Freight has a free coupon for the 4" magnetic bowl and you can always use a 20% coupon on one of the bigger ones if you need something larger. 😉
Harbor Freight has some really strong magnets! Dots, square, bowls! It took effort to pull them apart! 😂

The magnet bowl is available at Harbor Freight for 2.99. It's for nails and I also use it to pass over the floor and picks up spilled pins, etc. It used to be one of their "freebies"...killed by our great economy now
Mine was a freebie also. I love Harbor Freight. Their small blue flashlight is great to use for sewing. I just velcro it to the machine and get good light.
I use the cork sheets but I mountain to foam board… I get that at dollar tree also… We live in a rental and can’t put a lot a holes in the wall. Just that little bit of corkboard and foam board make great bulletin boards

Also the contact paper is fantastic, especially the clear kind, you can use it in your cricket or cutting machines, you can use it to laminate stuff, and my favorite part about it is that it’s actuallly vinyl so you can heat seal it/shrink wrap it to or over stuff with a heat cub or or even just a lighter. So you can cover things that are shaped really weird. It’s literally one of my all time favorite dollar store hacks. It even comes in matte, or glossy. The glossy one doesn’t say glossy it just says transparent but the matte one specifies that it is matte transparent so that’s how you tell the difference.
I believe there is a special place in heaven for teachers of children.😘

Silicone fingers are great fabric grippers, no licking!
ADDING ON TO THE BULLETIN BOARD IDEA Dollar tree sells the poster board with the layer of foam behind it
Glue your cork sheets on top of that. Should be thick enough you can push your pins it without stabbing your wall.

I bought large washers 2 inch diameter 25 cents each from Home Depot to use as pattern weights, so cheap. Stuff is always more expensive at the sewing store.

Another good light is the one that goes on your head. I put it around the arm of the machine ( just keep the thread on top of the strap, ask how I know?) I love good light and need it. My serger and cover stitch doesn't have great lighting. I guess most don't. So any extra light helps.

I love those clear cutting mats for quilt templates. Because I can see through the template, fussy cutting quilt pieces is super easy.

I used to go to Dollar tree a LOT when my kids were younger; great way to kill/occupy some time & sometimes u catch something really good. It used to be so fun to find an item, a popular brand name especially, but it seemed like it was becoming way old hat. Even played out isn’t worth a buck sometimes. Nice idea

Cutting mat-transparency for finding the placement of the fabric design - centering “that” flower in the pattern piece.

I use 2 clear sleeves for each pattern--one for the envelop that goes into a binder based on category (I used to have small binder for current projects I'd take to the store when I needed fabric) and the pattern pieces in the second sleeve that goes into a file drawer...
