    Tip: If you put a nice layer of Arctic Silver between the can and the aluminum blocks, it will help get your coke colder faster.

    The problem is that you are limited by the thermal conductivity of the pepsi itself. You can only cool it so fast until the outer layers of liquid start to freeze before the heat has a chance to escape from the middle. You should find a way to gently stir it, maybe have it spin very slowly with changing direction.

    You can either mount it between your cpu and a good heatsinc, with thermal compound on both sides, or you can buy a unit consisting of a peltier and heatsinc in one.

    Another way to do this is to build something similar to the cylinder-shaped fan blade system in a tower fan, but have it capable of wrapping around the can with only a little bit of space on the sides, and then on the bottom have a platform for the can to sit on that can spin with ball bearings so that when the lid is closed, it can grab the top of the can to keep it from spinning yet still allow the fan blades to rotate around it. The lid and can platform will have slits for air intake and the blades will push the air outward...and from there all you need to make it use no electricity at all is a crank that spins the fan blades at a high ratio, perhaps a 8:1 or 10:1 ratio from the crank.

    Peltier CPU coolers have existed for years now. You can buy them online. But be prepared for a hefty energy bill, because those eat several hundred Watts of power to cool the CPU and still need a fan to disperse the heat. So such a cooler is a lot more expensive, requires a powerful PSU, still creates noise and costs a lot to have it running. That's probably the reason they haven't caught on. But they're a great option for overclockers where money and noise isn't really that much of an issue.

  • @MrNightro
    @MrNightro 11 років тому

    I'm still using a Coolit Freezone Elite CPU cooler that is based on peltiers on my i7 2600K overclocked to 4.6Ghz & never surpassed 56c even in a 30c heated room & benchmarking. This with it set to only 40% of full potential power, at full potential it easily drops well below ambient temperatures to the point where I have to worry about condensate build up but the software keeps everything in check perfectly. Best cooler I have ever owned including my custom multi radiator water cooled systems.

    Stir is a verb, to stir. It is not an ingredient. It is when you use an item like a spoon and move it around in a mixture. In this case stirring it would be to use a spoon to mix the salt with the ice :)

  • @TheGevShow
    @TheGevShow 11 років тому

    easiest can cooler is a bowl of ice and salt. stuff a can in the salted ice and 2 minutes later the drink is ice cold. the salt causes the ice to drop its temperature far below freezing which cools the drink quickly. also, its practically free since everyone has a bowl, ice, and salt in their house.

    I like the idea of the Green-O-Meter. It is a definitive indicator of how well designed the project is -- how efficient it is. This is important I think. I converted my HD V-Rod motorcycle to all LED and refused to use wire-wound resistor loads to trick the ECU for that very reason -- it destroys the benefit of efficiency! Buck-Booster controllers well for LEDs. Hey... funny... a pal of mine gave me a USB powered can cooler that works the same way as the can cooler in this video! A fan blowing past the hot side heat sink.

  • @stevecobb76
    @stevecobb76 9 років тому

    1 flaw in your design ben, you have to have the heat pipes in the cooler pointing up for work correctly. and the fluid inside heats and steams it rises carrying the heat "UP" to the cooling fins. they will not work properly sideways or upside down. In that orientation, only the copper is carrying the heat to the fins and not the liquid inside.

    • @deadchannel991
      @deadchannel991 2 роки тому

      Incorrect, these are common CPU heatsinks for a pc. Generally, your CPU cooler is mounted onto your motherboard in the same orientation that the ones in the video are.

    An Arduino is way overkill for this. It only needs a simple thermistor controlled voltage regulator circuit. Ben also demonstrated the perfect way to destroy a Peltier. They have to be kept DRY. They should be insulated and sealed around the edges to keep out condensation.

    I have just discovered you on UA-cam! Your videos are excellent and very entertaining. My next effort might be the solder reflow oven. You evidently have a preference for diet "soda" or "Pop".... So I was wondering if you are aware of apartame (artifical sweetener) poisoning. It's extremely toxic. People gain weight from diet soda because it makes them crave carbs. Keep up the great effort and I think that you are a very bright person. Respect from Apache Junction, Arizona.

    From what I have experienced with peltiers the more you use the more effiecent they get, I used 8 132w Qmax peltiers for a watter chiller in my rig, so I'm speaking from experience.

    I need to use my 240 rad outside tower. Im going to put the petier with noctua heatsink on hotside and cold side ontop of the res then onlt to gpu phanteks cooler block in tower then and back out to loop. Worried if condensation getting inside pc tower but doubt it could. But ill watch but with all outside i doubt it could. If i see any sign ill unplug the pelteir use just radiators alone. Only as have these sitting thought put onto res. Square cheap one. Spare cpu cooler to. Wide channels could go through that with peltier before gpu and back. But unsure if 300lmin is ok. Cheapo pump. Have sc600 but maybe too much.
