My dear Dawn, welcome to your introduction to a non Judeo/Christian based story. A crash course in Chinese mythology. Soo K John Carpenter and Kurt Russell introduced opened this door to many round eyes. The hairy dude is The Wild Man Of China. Their version of the North American Bigfoot or Tibetan Yeti. The all seeing guardian has shown up in many D&D adventures. Asians with green eyes were/are thought to be holy. Blessed by the gods. Interesting factoid an offspring of an Asian and an African had a greater change for of having green eyes.
Jack IS the sidekick. Throughout the movie, he screws up and gets sidelined while Wang does almost all the work.and the fighting. BTW, James Hong (David Lo Pan) has had a long career, and is still working today at the age of 95. He's one of those actors who most people don't know his name, but they recognize him when they see him. Also, Victor Wong, who played Egg Shen, was Walter Chang, the store owner in Tremors. He's the one who named the worms Graboids.
Dawn Marie, you may need to watch this movie again with the understanding that Jack Burton (played by Kurt Russell) is the SIDEKICK and Wang Chi (played by Dennis Dun) is the HERO. Much of the comedy of this story revolves around this premise. Jack Burton THINKS he is the HERO but he is the SIDEKICK.
"Is there a sequel and it explains everything?" No. But there is a sorta-prequel (The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension) that explains even less and is awesome.
Lo Pan is voiced by James Hong, who also voices Po's father in the 'Kung Fu Panda' franchise. And Egg Shen was portrayed by actor Victor Wong, who played Walter Chang in 'Tremors.' I only pick one little point with this: they're having an awfully carefree celebration at the end, considering that none of the allies they took into the underworld came out alive.
I suspect you are right that if you watch it again it will all come clear to you. You are actually right on the edge of seeing it. You asked why Jack got to be the hero when he would have made more sense as the sidekick to his buddy Wang. The joke of it all is that Jack IS the sidekick. He is the comical sidekick who doesn't know he is a sidekick and is just sure that he is the hero of the story. He is street smart and full of bravado, but he is an ordinary guy, and he has embarked on an epic quest in the company of martial arts masters and a sorcerer, to do battle against an ancient master of the dark arts and his supernatural minions. The story is developed so that we experience it more or less as Jack does. It's chaotic and confusing at the start, and it's hard to tell for the longest time who is who and what is happening, which is exactly the way Jack is experiencing it all. He is constantly having to be told what is going on while, to his companions, it seems to be an old and familiar story. Jack acts like he knows more than he does and charges right in, but we know he's just bluffing his way through. Bluffing, that is, until that perfect moment when his one true "superpower", his amazing reflexes, allow him to play a critically important role in fulfilling destiny's plan for Davide Lo Pan.
This movie became a HUGE cult favorite, and over the years it just got better like a fine wine. Too bad that Dawn Marie didn't stay to watch the end credits and the song. It's actually written and sung by the director, John Carpenter (with his band, "The Coup De Villes"), with the song called, "Big Trouble in Little China." Yup. Carpenter does a lot of his own sound production in his movies. On UA-cam, you can listen to the full song: "The Coupe De Villes - Big Trouble in Little China (Upscaled HD) (1986)" --- It's actually a pretty good tune! The lyrics! "We better run.... until they take us away... take us away...!"
It’s also supposed to be like “wtf is going on?” Because that’s what Jack is experiencing. He doesn’t realize he’s the sidekick and everyone else knows what’s going on.
You have to understand, this movie is a fun ride, with fun characters, with an absurd story, which does not need to be, nor is meant to be fully understood. You just take the journey. You probably would like it the more times you see it. Another one to check out, which is kind of similar, is the last dragon.
I love this movie becuase its like we are seeing it from Jacks eyes. Everyone else is `Ohh yes of course, this is whats going on this is how it works` Than us the audience and Jack are sitting there going What! Huh? How? and the explinations never quite make enough sence. But we are along for the ride and doing our best. Good Times.
It was Mr. Creosote in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life who exploded. And we know you secretly loved it, but it's a boy movie so you couldn't admit it was Best Movie Ever. And you'll like Dirty Harry.
It's really about Jack Burton: an anti-hero in that he's hapless yet brave, dumb yet he gets it right somehow; people didn't like it when it came out---I LOVED it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Carpenter 1st big made for TV movie with Kurt playing Elvis, u didn't know carpenter did comedy! Also they have done multiple movies together! Irony, Kurt met Elvis as a child, then as a child star, did a movie with Elvis, then played Elvis in the TV movie, then did a bank robber movie as an Elvis impersonator with Kevin Costner, then did Elvis voice in Forrest Gump!
4:19 they are playing fan tan. This movie you definitely need to watch at least 3 times and then you'll love it wholeheartedly. You really can't go wrong with any John Carpenter flick be it Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, Ghosts of Mars, Prince of Darkness, They Live, or John Carpenters: Vampires. And that's just the tip of Carpenters genius and when him and Russell get together it's just an instant classic😊
This is such a GREAT movie I saw it when I was I kid pops brought it home one night been in love with it ever since. Awesome show there ma'am keep up the terrific work 👌 👏 👍 😀
John Carpenter actually felt bad that the final cur emphasised Kurt Russel (Jack Burton) to such a great degree, at the expense of Dennis Dun (Wong Chi), for whom this movie was actually supposed to be a vehicle to future success. Which did help hide the fact that Jack was supposed to be the comedy sidekick. And the original script was set in the Wild West, leading to Kurt's attempt at a John Wayne accent.
Jack Burton is a parody of the generic American hero. Pure American bravado. Walks into every room like he owns it. Kurt Russell was so good in this part! I still hope they do a sequel with him as ol' man Jack Burton, still completely clueless yet doesn't care, just lucks his way out of every situation.
"Big Trouble in Little China" is to those of us who love old Hong Kong 'kung fu' movies what "Mars Attacks" is to fans of 1950s science fiction. We know the tropes. We know they *are* tropes. But we love them. This film is Carpenter's love letter to them. And to us. Funny thing, I always wondered where my love of Tarentino's stuff came from. Then I saw the old Shaw Bros. Studio logo in the open of "Kill Bill". 'Oh..we grew up watching the same stuff!'..I might have even said it out loud.
This movie improves with repeated viewings. It also improves if you just relax and let the nonsense wash over you like warm ocean waves. It's no different from Star Wars. It has its own internal logic if you study it, but if you study it too closely all the magic disappears. Or think of it like a Marx Brothers movie. None of their shenanigans would work in real life but we love to watch it work on the screen because it's comedy.

Also, Victor Wong, who played Egg Shen, was Walter Chang, the store owner in Tremors. He's the one who named the worms Graboids.
“You can’t cut a bottle in half!” Well this whole movie is just going to confuse you if you can’t get past that 😂
I loved Kim Catrel in "Manniquin". She's a mannequin that comes to life. I think you'd like it.
"THIS REALLY PISSES ME OFF TO NO END!" ... LOL
I believe in magic, saucery is real. I made this wine butter one last night that came from some magical place I can’t describe.
Gross
Dawn Marie, you may need to watch this movie again with the understanding that Jack Burton (played by Kurt Russell) is the SIDEKICK and Wang Chi (played by Dennis Dun) is the HERO. Much of the comedy of this story revolves around this premise. Jack Burton THINKS he is the HERO but he is the SIDEKICK.
"Is there a sequel and it explains everything?"
No. But there is a sorta-prequel (The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension) that explains even less and is awesome.
This is the ultimate in acquired taste movies. It gets better the more you watch it. One of the most quotable movies ever.
This reaction will appease my Emperor indeed!
Jack thinks he's the hero of an action-adventure film...in reality he's just the sidekick...the *comedy-relief* sidekick.
Good Times.
Yes, watch it again. Gets better each time.
I would like to recommend critters from the year 1986.❤
This movie is one of my top 10 all time favorites! Jack Burton is the greatest sidekick who think's he's the hero ever!!
"Under the bed poll" is very accurate for this movie. Just look at that beholder eyeball licking thing.
It was Mr. Creosote in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life who exploded. And we know you secretly loved it, but it's a boy movie so you couldn't admit it was Best Movie Ever. And you'll like Dirty Harry.
I still love your tongue in cheek humor. Always keep it! 👍🏻
Like its spiritual sibling, Buckaroo Banzai, this film does not care whether you understand it or not.
It's really about Jack Burton: an anti-hero in that he's hapless yet brave, dumb yet he gets it right somehow; people didn't like it when it came out---I LOVED it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the greatest John Carpenter / Kurt Russell movies, alongside "Escape from LA" and "The Thing"! So quotable too!
Like I told my last wife, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it’s all in the reflexes.
All Jack wanted....was his truck back.
One of my absolute favorite, most QUOTABLE movies ever!
Seriously, the number of awesome, memorable lines is staggering! lol
"im so hungry, give me a bite of that"
The sandwich or Kurt Russell? 🤣🤣🤣
Definitely a guilty pleasures movie for 1980s fan boys.
This is one of those "just go with it" fun films. Get the Doritos and a drink and just have a good time.
"Chewbacca's hillbilly deformed cousin." Best description of the monster yet!
'Does a bullet slowdown when it hits water?"
Yes, yes it does. In fact if there is 8 feet of water between you and where the bullet enters the water you are pretty safe.
