Don't know why this was in my feed but I'm glad it was. I've never seen anyone react to one of my favorite childhood movies ever. As an Asian American little boy, when this movie came out it gave me movie star heros to look up to. One that looked like my dad and everything. I watched this movie so many times growing up as an 80's kid. Thanks for watching this.
This movie is one of the inspirations for the Mortal Kombat franchise.
My absolute favorite James Hong role! He's so funny as Lo Pan, especially the little old basket case on wheels. "Now this really pisses me off to no end!" "Shut up Mr Burton!" 🤣🤣🤣
LOL!!! those lines caught me SO off guard haha!!!
My sister and I used to always say, "Who are these people? Friends of yours, huh? Now this REALLY pisses me off to no end!" and I actually said to my mom when I asked to borrow the car, "Don't worry, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that it's all in the reflexes." By the look on her face, I could tell it more horrified her than comforted her. 😁
Indeed!
My favorite is in Seinfeld lol, cartwright!
Now this really p***** me off to no end is the best line in the movie.
The hand sign that the Chang Sing flash to each other, is an homage to the hand sign that Han patriots used to identify each other in the 1974 classic kung fu movie "Five Shaolin Masters" aka "Five Masters of Death." "Big Trouble in Little China" is full of little Easter eggs like that.
Oh wow nice! I think that movie was referenced in comments when I watched kung fu hustle too, ahh I should add that to the poll
@@NiaMakiReacts I'd be interested in seeing a modern viewer's reaction to it. The complicated, highly stylized choreography might look strange to audiences used to the grittier style of movie fights today, but they have a certain almost melodramatic quality that can charm you into to suspend your disbelief if you let it.
11:15 and everyone laughs at Superman's disguise when he works at the daily planet, his black glasses and suite,.. the glasses actually work. 🤓 😂 great reaction to a classic! 👍
I read that Chistopher Reeve actually tried that out on set and it worked. No one paid him any attention in his Clark Kent costume.
The guy at the beginning wasn't a detective; he was Egg Shen's lawyer.
He was an insurance adjuster....trying to make sense of what happened.
The main thing to remember about this movie is that Jack thinks he's the Hero of an action-adventure film...and he's actually the sidekick. The *comedy relief* sidekick...
Jack's catching the knife and killing Lo Pan is of course presaged by the scene with the bottle right at the beginning of the film.
Did u write this at another reaction? Feel like I seen it before.. Anyways I think u are wrong! Jack saves Wang at start from getting hit by a car, and he is not just a comedy relief.. Its just a comedy movie, and meant to be funny.. He is still the hero
@@Someinsanegenuisnah. Wang is way more capable and knowledgeable in this situation. Jack is mostly clueless, but brave, loyal, and just lucky enough.
Jack is the main character in his story (this movie). But Wang is the hero.
@@ZyggyZero They are both heroes i think, and they both would be dead if they went alone. The old man is the sidekick
@@Someinsanegenuis Egg is the wizard. Jack is the fool. All have a part, it’s a team of destiny.
Jack is impulsive, but he has fate on his side in this instance.
Wang is the leader. It’s his quest. The team gathered to him. He accomplished most. Yes, all are heroic.
Burton managed to KO himself.
He showed up for one fight that Wang had already finished.
How many times was he the only one in need of an explanation?
I’m not knocking Jack’s courage.
Jack is a dolt.
But a great friend, a brave fighter, and able to follow someone else’s lead when he needs to. And that’s enough for him.
@@ZyggyZero I don't see Wang as the leader and Jack as the follower.. I see them as equals
When Jack is in the White Tiger and it gets attacked Wang and Eddie are outside, they look up and the top of the building is glowing green fire.
I think they said in the commentary they put that opening scene in because test audiences were confused why Jack Burton wasn't the hero.
Oooh and I was confused by the intro instead 😂
This reaction will appease my Emperor indeed!
😂 😂
Indeed! Sacrilegious as it might be to say it, this one may be my favorite John Carpenter flick! It's quite fun (and influential).
The Thing may be my fav, but maybe I need to rewatch this, lol I expected comedy but I don't think I was ready for how random it was lol
I'm sure someone has said it already but yes the lightning storm did in fact inspire the video game Mortal Kombat character Raiden
That’s right.
Jack’s the ethnic sidekick in a kung fu movie. Gotta love it.
Lmfao omg yes he is!!!!!
1 of my fav films growing up. I appreciate u for reacting to this one. Love the channel btw.
Thanks Tey!!! This movie was so random and wild haha
The block blowing up with green flame was the brothel blowing up. Now you should watch Starman and Escape from New York. Lo Pan needed to find a girl to quench his blade. LOL
OOOOOOOH!!!! Ok ok yeah idk why I thought it would be the last thing before the po-pos came but that makes sense lol
you have to hand it to jack, because otherwise he probably wouldnt find it
Back when Wondercon sci-fi/fantasy/horror/movie/comics/manga/anime convention was still held at the Oakland Convention Center (instead of San Francisco, and then Anaheim), James Hong was one of the guests after his role as Lo Pan in "Big Trouble in Little China." I got his autograph and told him that, when I was growing up, it meant a lot seeing an Asian actor getting so well known for so many TV and movie roles.
Rain is in "Golden Child" with Eddie Murphy, Lo Pan (James Hong) is in "Everything Everywhere all at Once". Wang and Egg Shen are brought back in John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" (Apocalypse Trilogy = The Thing/Prince of Darkness/In The Mouth Of Madness)
It's all in the re-actions.
I see what you did there!!!
Three storms, Thunder, Rain and Lightning
A couple of people have mentioned the comics that came out a few years ago that continued the story. The first issue picks up right after the movie ends, and describes the beast as a lesser demon whose master was Lo-Pan. So, when Jack killed Lo-Pan, the demon's allegiance transferred to Jack. Also, that first issue reveals that at one time Jack was married. I can't remember if it explicitly states cancer, but as she was dying he kissed her goodbye and said that would forever be the last kiss goodbye.
Fun detail: The big red monster is meant to be a Chinese ogre - of course, most art of them is a bit more...stylized.
The weird eyeball thing is an in-joke from CArpenter or the SFX crew, it's actually a D&D creature and has nothing to do with Chinese folklore. But most things in the movie are in fact scary and/or silly bits of folklore.
Also, the whole concept of the movie is basically to tell a Chinese kung fu martial arts & sorcery adventure movie from the viewpoint of the goofy comic relief (Jack Burton).
I often wondered if it was meant to be a yeti instead of an ogre.
Interesting fact: In the comic sequel, the ogre actually serves Jack as his sidekick of sorts. :D And Lo Pan is in the Hell of people killed by idiots. :D
I must say, it was a pleasure to watch a reactor actually understand what was going on. This movie trips up a lot of them🤣
Excellent choice Nia! Such an underrated movie
"Does that effect her an Wang's situation?"
Miao Yin is a widow now. It's all good 😉
And there is no film sequel, but they did do a comic series where the orange 'eel Chewbacca' becomes his friend.
LMAO!!! them becoming bffs is the funniest thing ever
Speaking of sequels I found a script for big trouble in little china 2 that was written by Charles proser and Peter David in 1995 I read through it and they only used Egg Shen and a bunch of new characters.
I love this film, and I've probably watched it a dozen times. 😊
Did you figure out that Wang is the actual hero in this story? And that Jack is the comedy-relief side-kick who only *thinks* he's the hero?
you're forgetting the potion of super heroism Egg and them took. they all became much more powerful: Jack's thrown knife dented the gong, and then was thrown threw Lo Pan's forehead!
Lightning (aka Raiden) didn't do anything after this. He's my favorite character.
Kurt Russel played a character in a movie called „The Strongest Man in the World“ when he was a teenager. The movie was made by Walt Disney. Kurt made several movies with Disney under a 10 year contract. Must be where his exceptional core strength come from in the wheel chair scene!!! Haha. He also played Elvis, which he revived some of his moves and singing while playing Santa in the movie „The Christmas Chronicles“. Kurt has had quite the career…….
The critter that snatched Gracie, is a mythical Chinese monster called a yeren, or wild man.
When Lo Pan says he will marry both, he is playing FMK with only two options; he still has to choose one for F and one to K to break the curse.
One of my most favorite movies I loved watching as a kid and I could still watch this movie over and over again, love Kurt Russel, always reminds me of how I seen my uncle when I was a kid 😎🤘
I always wondered who would be fooled when Superman puts on glasses and becomes Clark Kent.... now I know.
It's great to see your reactions to movies I grew up on 😊 Cant wait for the next one😀
Loved Kim Cattrall in the comedy movie Porky's. Many people would say the jokes don't age well, but there's 2 scenes that had me laughing harder than any moment I've seen in movies since.
I think the sequels age a little better than the first (good anti-racism messaging in one of them), but you can't get there without watching Porky's 😅
Lassie...
I hope you had a great Mother's day yesterday and also Happy Spring👍
Watched this film a million times, never gets old.
While there was no movie sequel ever, a comic book series was released that carried on directly after the movie and answers all your questions, one of them being tha Mao Yen is STILL married to Lo Pan.
yeah, this film definitely is, where Mortal Kombat's Raiden got inspired...
There were some involved in the movie that wanted to do a sequel. It just didn’t get done. So a comic series was written to show the adventures of Jack burton after this, and to explain the monster at the end. Turns out, the monster becomes kind of Jack’s pet because he was the one that ended his master, so Jack is the master now.
😂 that’s funny, it looked so ominous the way it ended haha
A lot of this movie was filmed on location in San Francisco's Chinatown. John Carpenter always maintained that stuff happened IRL during filming that was even wilder than the movie itself.
People make a good case that, in this movie, Jack Burton was not actually the Hero, but instead the comic-relief Sidekick.
I love the music score in this movie. Maybe its just nostalgia talking but the music really sells the vibe for me. Some of the theatrics/exchanges between characters are almost reminiscent of a musical. Very cool movie.
"I never drive faster than I can see!"
The face you made when Gracie Law Belly flopped into the water 😂
This is right up there with Bruce LeRoy......sho nuff
2000 years, he can't find one broad to fit the bill? Come on, Dave. 🤣
right???
Did you say "the dragon's balls" lol
The pinkie nails are a sign that you don't have to do manual labor.
Green Flame!
Great reaction👍 Another 80s flick you may enjoy is 1984 "The Never Ending Story"
25:33 that’s no Chewbacca! 35:28 😂 35:37-38:20 my brother said jack Burton is more of a sidekick. 39:52 headshot! 40:57 🎈
One of my favorite movies of all time lol I would watch this non stop as a kid 🥋
You really asked if Lo Pan was evil after he screeched like a demon and blasted the good guys with light from his eyes and mouth? Haha
One of my favorites!!! So excited to see you reacting to it. It's all in the reflexes!
I almost expected him to fumble that last scene haha, but it is indeed all in the reflexes
My all time favorite movie!!
Me too
It wasn't a detective's office at the beginning, it was an attorney, I think for Jack's insurance company, trying to investigate his claim on his stolen truck.
I don't know if this is a relevant reference anymore or not, but Gracie was played by Kim Cattrall, who also played Samantha on Sex & the City. I had the world's biggest crush on Ms. Cattrall when I was a tweenager. Porky's taught me things about a woman's voice I had never imagined...
Jack Burton is Wang's not so bright sidekick, and Margo is Grace Law's not so bright sidekick
I just released this one yesterday on my channel. Nia, you got a spy cam at my place or what? 🙂
😂 😂 oh nice!! I’ll have to check urs out! And of course, I can’t tell u about the secret camera at ur place, or else it’s not a secret anymore
This movie script started out as a sequel to the 1984 cult film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (both Big Trouble and Banzai share the same writer, W.D. Richter).. but despite a stacked cast that included Jeff Goldblum, Peter Weller and John Lithgow, the movie flopped... so this was rerwitten to be its own thing. Buckaroo Banzai is definutlely worth a watch.. its even weirder than this, if you can believe it.
Btw, both Big Troulble and Buckaroo Banzai are supposed to have the feeling of reading issue 73 of a comic book series without having read any other issues... like these adventures have been going on a while and you kinda have to just "go with it".
@@DanJackson1977 While I agree, with Big Trouble it feels like a cross-over issue to me. Jack Burton (gritty slice of life trucker dramedy) bumbling into Egg & Wang's late arc issue (epic battle against evil across the centuries action comic) and trying to catch up with the madness.
Buckaroo definitely has the feel of a phase 2 or 3 MCU movie with none of the setup, which I think is landing better with people now than it did at its release. "What's that 🍉 doing there?"
Oh wow, I never knew that and I always loved that movie too. Peter Weller is just such a G!
The Buckaroo books and comics are fun, too.
May the wings of Liberty never lose a feather, no horseshit.
I kinda realized... I still quote this movie like 2-3 times a week.
"Nothing or double"
"No horseshit, Wang"
"Have you paid your dues? Yessir the checks in the mail."
"It's all in the reflexes."
"We really shook the pillars of heaven, didn't we?"
"May the wings of liberty never lose a feather."
"I don't think he's gonna stop!"
So many more. I'll find some way in everyday life to quote this movie at some point during the week. 😄
Indeed!
"How did you get up there?" "Wasn't easy!"
Maybe I'm the only one but I wanted to play in Rain's Vidal Sasoon Tresseme Dove Garnier Herbal Essence Pantene hair! It just looks so silky smooth!
Aaa yeh, my favorite movie! It has EVERYTHING! The fight with Wang Chi and Rain at Lo Pan's wedding is the best scene
EDIT:
I think the green explosion was when the Three Storms were taking Miaoyin from the White Tiger Brothel. The lawyer was probably just kind of exaggerating.
EDIT 2:
There is no part 2 in terms of a movie. There are some comics, but not very good :\
If you enjoyed this, you’ve got to check out the 3 Ninjas film series starring Pat Morita (Egg Shen) as a Japanese grandfather who trains his grandsons in the art of ninjitsu.
⚔️⛈️😈👹
Even as a kid I was like "these movies are terrible." Theyre super corny, even for kids movies. And also, Egg Shen is definitely not played by Pat Morita. Very different actors. Lol no offense!
If someone does enjoy this film and wants to see more of Victor Wong (Egg Shen) then I recommend The Golden Child, with Eddie Murphy. Victor Wong has a small but very funny role in that one.
@@butkusfan23 ofc I meant Victor Wong; but I still think 3 Ninjas is worth the watch.
the weird hairy creature is explained not to be inherently evil and is bound to jack at the end of the movie by a sequel comic book
Since I've noticed you are reacting to "The Expanse", if you get a chance there's a great podcast out there called "Ty and That Guy". It's done by both Ty Franck, who is one of the two "James S.A. Corey" authors of The Expanse book series and a writer/executive producer of the TV show, and Wes Chatham who played Amos Burton on the show. It started out as an aftershow podcast for The Expanse episodes but it now has episodes that do deep dives into their favorite movies. Since there was a stretch where they were doing deep dives into John Carpenter films, they did an episode on this particular movie. You should check it out.
This is where mortal combat got the idea from
When you say back scratcher, I say Wolverine claws. These are like sharp steel blades that can kill.
I always love how blind reactors are basically Jack in this movie 🤣 usually its easy to predict and say certain lines you feel are coming up, BUT this movie moves around so Chaotically that reactors are like Jack, playing catch up and asking ALLL the questions lol 😅😆 This is my comfort movie when i need a break from reality, plus i use "Its all in the reflexes" about once a day 😅
Just a fantastic movie.
Greatest movie ever made. ill die on that hill... I'm 30 and I spend so much time fighting for the cause to my peers XD one day the rest of the world will realise Big trouble is the One
Another funny movie with an Asian/Supernatural theme is The Golden Child starring Eddie Murphy.
I shall add that to the list!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm pretty sure the city block exploding in green flame was what happened when the Storms stole Mao Yin from the White Tiger.
The reason why the scene at the beginning at the lawyer's office doesn't tie into anything is because it wasn't originally part of the movie. The studio thought that Jack didn't come off as heroic enough (evidently missing the point that Jack is the sidekick who thinks he is the hero) and made Carpenter add it.
When my mind and spirit aren't going north and south I make 6 demon bag drinks too.
Life hack 😂
You fell prey to the Clark Kent effect! 🤣Not trying to be mean, but I laughed so hard.
Big trouble in Little China is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time homegirl we got to watch some more Kung Fu flicks I'm suggesting Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers these two I think you really like they don't have romance kung fu sadness of course😢 but they're classics and I'm suggesting the movie hero and fearless these movies are starting Jet Li and ip man in the movie called The Protector starring Tony Jaa he's the best so whenever you start watching Kung Fu again please check these out all classics and well known movies please believe me😂 keep striving home girl
Oh, this is the one that earns you a sub. And you watch Kung Fu Hustle as well???
Top tier!
Yesss!!! Those were fun movies!
iron claws and emei piercers are very obscure and weird martial arts weapons, lol
Yeah I don’t think I ever hear of those
Great Channel Beautiful one ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much !
A Yeti.
Eel-Chewbacca thing is supposed to be a Yeti.
Lo Pan, Superman, and every single Power Ranger...
😍😍😍
🙌
Next movie 1995 mortal Kombat
Great idea!
😃👍
:) springy........dont fight it...........let em loose!
LOL!! you know what, I haven't been the best to the curls lately, they are currently restrained in a bun
@@NiaMakiReacts "Keeper of the curls" knows best.......until then ..we keep vigil :)
You should react to “The Champ” (1978)
Watch Showdown in Little Tokyo
Now rewatch Everything Everywhere All At Once. Trust me.
There was a giant green flame over the whorehouse building, that must have been what the lawyer was referencing. And it's never clear when they interviewed Egg, but honestly I've never questioned it. And the monster cliffhanger ending was just something that happens in the movie serials. Thankfully there was never a sequel (especially given how "Escape from LA" turned out).
You dealt with the insanity well, some reactors can't deal with how random things are. They always make me question my sanity as I love this film.
There was supposed to be a sequel, but this movie didn't do well enough at the box office so it was never made.
When this movie came out that intro scene in the office was not part of the movie. It started with the truck driving down the road. Every reaction I've seen has that office scene, and I can't help but think the movie flows better without it.
[19:00] Maybe you don't need to make silly noises? Just an idea, might help you get somewhere closer to PiB's subscriber numbers.
Are you deepfaking yourself or did your contrast settings go haywire?

Hello Nia
Hello 😊
For your next western buddy movie parody, try _Rustlers Rhapsody_. For gross and disgusting, _Lust in the Dust_.
They were married in California. We are a community property state.
I would love to see a reaction to Rustler's Rhapsody. The closest anyone seems to get is The Three Amigos, which is also a good picture, but it would be nice to see some variety.
Lust in the Dust! You can't go wrong with Divine and Lanie Kazan in the same movie.
Young people need an explanation.
This movie makes fun of the way Hollywood portrayed Asians back in the time this movie was made. For example, notice how the white guy assumes he's the main character when he's little more than a side character from the point of view of the actual plot.
Sometimes satire of this kind doesn't age well. If you made this movie today, the way Hollywood does a bad job of portraying Asians has changed, so the plot, details, jokes etc would be different.
I just explained why a remake of this movie wouldn't work. To make fun of modern Hollywood in the same way you would have to change so much that the resulting movie would barely be recognizable. If you don't make those changes, then you're violating the spirit of the story.
Victor Wong had to fly down to Hollywood to film that opening scene right after attending the wake for his son, Lyon, who was killed in Sacramento by a high school football who shouted anti-Asian and homophobic insults at Lyon and his friends before running up behind Lyon and hitting him in the head knocking him to the pavement and fracturing his skull. The Lee family was told that the killer would only get a light sentence because he was a minor. Pointing out that the killer shouted race and sexuality based slurs before attacking Lyon, the family asked if the killing could be classified as a hate crime so the killer could be tried as an adult, but they were told that it couldn't be a hate crime because the killer was also a minority. Ultimately, the killer ended up being sentenced to just 6 months. The family told their story to a popular consumer advocate reporter from a local TV station. The reporter wanted to do a feature story about Lyon's killing and the miscarriage of justice, but then the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion happened. The Wong's story was shelved so the news could focus on covering the national tragedy. Victor suffered his first stroke soon after, and his family believe that the stress from Lyon's death and the legal struggles surrounding it contributed to him having a stroke.
